- epicdigg, on 10/10/2007, -5/+140not to mention the banner on the middle right :)
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/10/2007, -7/+123I was about to say why isn't my adblock working...then I noticed the (PIC) part in the title. D'oh. Regardless a good find.
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -0/+93Coming to an aquafina bottle near you!
- Kr4t05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+53A funny side-effect of the Ad Provider's algorithm. The Ad Provider probably has a script that slaps up the first banner that matches the article. Irony; it's fun. :)
- TyroPyro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+532 pounds of Mercury a year is a huge amount btw
- otaking, on 10/10/2007, -1/+47Adblock prevents me from laughing at such things on my own. Sacrifices.
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30Its sad when a company posting record profits is able to argue they couldn't afford to keep things environmentally sound.

- MatttK, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22I don't block ads with software but with my mind! Haha.. no really. I couldn't understand what the submitter was talking about until I stared at the photo for a good 10 seconds. To me, "top right" means "top right, under the ads". It's actually really bad for sites that put content in places where ads would normally be. I can't actually see it.
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22So, you're cool with ingesting high levels of a deadly toxin linked to insanity and death? Wanna become a Mad Hatter? No measurable impact my ass.
- MeMongo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16The correct phrase is "much ado about nothing"
- Authustian, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Ah, finally a disadvantage to adblock, you miss out on the advertisement irony.
- pixelate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I'd cut you for insulting the song, but all I have are these goddamn spoons
- airwalkery2k, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18I believe some call this sensation I am experiencing "irony".
- avisotin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+111. Dump toxic waste into a lake
2. ???
3. Profit! - UglieJosh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Like rayayain... On your wedding day???
- phantom_mullet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It's okay, otaking, we have plenty of non-Adblock-using minions to point out humorous situations such as these...
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"That amount is small compared with the mercury that falls into the water from air pollution"
Hmmm... - Prefection, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7How much would it cost for BP to meet the environmental standards?
What is the net gain if BP meets the environmental standards?
Could BP use the same money to accomplish far more environmental good?
Isn't the American SUV-driving nitwit consumer really the force driving the issue?
Hate gasoline? Quit being pussies about wind turbines within LOS. Wind energy = ZERO pollution = non-polluting source of hydrogen = clean cars
Remember the old axiom... "It's the economy, Stupid!" - Neuz89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4$$$$
- jonathansoeder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It makes me sleep tight at night that the government is going after "eco-terrorists" with extra gusto lately -- you know, like the ELF and other groups who try and sabotage corporations who exercise their legal right to dump the most toxic of chemicals into our ecosystems. They're the real terrorists after all. The people who do irrepairable damage to the environment may poison generations to come but hey -- they provide jobs and increase the monthly gdp by a fraction of a percentage, and you know, that is great!
Join me in continuing to trust the government to protect our interests and hunt down eco terrorists across the country - jonellison13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They're POISONING me and MY FAMILY!!!
- Caleb83, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You make a good point, but way to rain on everyone's parade.
- Dom02, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4you'd think they would have though about negative articles...
- rjam710, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No, that's just an unfortunate coincidence, like pretty much everything else in that song.
- mt066, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4But I thought they only made the happy green gas stations with the happy cartoon people that sing and dance! Happy!!!
- crimoid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Of course then it goes on to say that the amount is small when compared to the effects of air pollution.
- bnolsen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I generally block only flashing ads, especially flash based ones.
I hadn't hit this one before.
I am curious...what are realistic estimated costs for reducing the mercury? - p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Because FBI will come knocking on his door because he committed click fraud....
The only reason I don't use adblock is for that very reason. Because if you figure, if everyone uses adblock, these sites are eventually going to have to start charging membership or something, because how else is the site going to pull revenue? - KMye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There are about 120 oil refineries in the US. If all of them put out the same amount as this one, that would be 240 lbs per year into the entire US. Compare that to above numbers, or learn a little ***** geology and toxicology, and you'll see that it's a non-issue. Mercury is not some exotic compound; it's a natural, common element that's in all natural water to some degree. The upcoming mercury standards Clinton put into place will require places to purify their outflow beyond what the natural water coming into their property runs at in many cases. I understand though, that it can be much more satisfying to stay willfully ignorant and incensed at the evil corporations that make your lifestyle possible.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Reminds me of this.
http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Extremely_Innapropriate_Vista_Ad - capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3well it sounds like our unbirthday boy is a bit unhappy. Have some more tea?
- UglieJosh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4STFU and GTFO???
- coyoteblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The great lakes are so beautiful.
Why is a company, more importantly, why is a foreign company being allowed to dump in our waters? - coyoteblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I live about forty-five minutes north of the BP refinery. Personally, I don't want my children swimming in Lake Michigan now.
A while back Lake Huron, especially near Detroit, was contaminated by mercury. The water is still disgusting. - UglieJosh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3As one of those minions, I would like to say I have good reason for this.
I leave adblock off and, eve, click on the adds. Why? Because I support free web-content and add-clicking helps the case of net neutrality. Look it up, if you don't believe me. - JoshChan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I wish this is a havoc. Are two pounds of mercury too much to handle for a corporaiton?
- coit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And, if you notice down in the article, these 2 pounds are only a fraction of what naturally collects in the water from the atmosphere. Just another case of Environmental FUD.
- KarthVader, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't know if KMye is from the Great Lakes region or not, but he lives in Cali now. Try living here for a while and see how it feels to have the Great Lakes, some of the largest bodies of fresh water, being exploited so much that you can't even swim in them anymore. BP and other companies just essentially erased my childhood.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2BTW: This is the full page, not just the ad.
- addicted68098, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Even without mercury Lake Michigan is terribly polluted, it seems to be a bit better lately,
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I believe you about the whole Photoshopping thing, but what format would the picture be for you to not be suspicious? PNG? Seriously.
- Drkboarder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I live in Michigan and fish the inland waters consistently. The DNR has already issued a recommendation that people should not eat more than one meal a week based on fish caught in the inland waters of michigan. This is due to pollution of waters all over including the great lakes. I see scum, pollution and have to deal with smaller baitfish due to diseases mostly from fish out of the eastern side of the great lakes. It's truly sad, and I don't even just blame companies. I blame everyone and myself.
No matter, I'll start casting double cheeseburgers into Wal Mart once all the fish die. The obese people will feed me. - metalink, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They can't as these 2 pounds are dispersed within tons of (cleaned) waste water they pour into the lake yearly.
- heppelitis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There was a fire at that refinery, at gas prices shot up those days.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They probably should pay attention to the ads they have with their stories...
- EntangledPhysx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2thats the reason I dont use AdBlock. plus, I might see an ad that is useful for me (although 100% doubtful)
- Drkboarder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ahh, you know me so well...
I wasn't really trying to single out Wal Mart, just any place where a good amount of Americans will be. The percentage of finding fat people will be great. - EntangledPhysx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I agree. People say "omg but CFL has mercury in it!! if you break it you DIE!!!" LOL!! But using a normal incandescent, they use more energy, and thus release more mercury into the environment through the power plants, which will be alot more then just one CFL (which last years, btw)
