- Sonan, on 08/15/2008, -1/+144Her daughter was her designated driver, so it's ok.
- diggerbez, on 08/15/2008, -2/+109What is the point of having kids if they can't even drive you to the bars?
- nemojonze, on 08/16/2008, -8/+80texas
- pintomp3, on 08/16/2008, -3/+63"now drive me to the bar so i can find you a father"
- hotpuck6, on 08/16/2008, -2/+40what a dumb ass,
You have your daughter drive you HOME from the bar, not to it.
noob. - inactive, on 08/16/2008, -5/+40WTF!? That's ***** awesome. That girl should be given a medal. Next F1 racer for sure.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -6/+38I like where this is going. giggity giggity
- sugarkang, on 08/16/2008, -3/+33don't know why you're being dugg down.
if 10 year olds can perform headshots on halo, they can drive cars.
age 16 or 18 is just an arbitrary number.
standards have changed. - ieure, on 08/15/2008, -3/+31I suppose it’s better than the kid asking her mom to drive her to the bar.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -4/+2912 in hillbilly years is like 25, so it's really not that outrageous.
- Enkhei, on 08/16/2008, -0/+22would have been better if she was driving a stick shift :D
- VenDrake, on 08/16/2008, -0/+21It also depends on the 12 year old. I've met some that are pretty responsible. Heck, I know some that probably drive better than I ... um ... I mean ... than my friends drive when they're sober!
- Skooma714, on 08/16/2008, -1/+21It's not like older people do such a stellar job anyway.
- antonio97b, on 08/16/2008, -1/+21You rode a tricycle when you were 12?
- kwynn87, on 08/16/2008, -2/+21looks like she will be behind bars now.
- ReidFleming, on 08/15/2008, -18/+35Here in 'The Heartland', kids start driving all kinds of vehicles early. From riding lawnmowers to tractors, they're always tooling around. Plus, they get very good an maneuvering trailers and such. Getting a license at 15 (or earlier) for a car is a milestone, no doubt but, if their legs are long enough, I know for a fact that they are better drivers than this city kid was at their age.
- StickWST, on 08/16/2008, -1/+19^^^^^
Word. I know too many people that have been killed by drunk drivers.
Just a couple months ago my girlfriends two closest friends were killed instantly by one. - inactive, on 08/16/2008, -8/+23So what? i drove when i was 12 and 13.
- protoopus, on 08/16/2008, -1/+16i grew up outside a small farming community and one funny thing i remember is noticing that all my fellow students had driven themselves to driver education.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -1/+15I thought it was the norm to start showing your kids around that age, at least "how" to drive. You never know, incase of an emergency, life or death type thing, it could save you. But yeah, driving her to the bar is bad.
- StickWST, on 08/16/2008, -3/+17Why don't you have a seat over there.
In my basement. - combatchuck, on 08/16/2008, -2/+16Don't most kids drive their parents to drink?
- johnboycanada, on 08/16/2008, -1/+13Only because there is zero tolerance for 12 year old drivers.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+12Why? Drunks do it all the time, somehow - so a 12 yr old is not much a surprise.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 08/16/2008, -1/+13she's teaching her daughter independence and giving her life experience by showing her daughter how she fails miserably as a parent and as a person. It's a more hands on approach to the scared straight method.
- Miamisun, on 08/16/2008, -3/+14Kid has to learn to drive sometime.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+11I can ride my trike with no handlebars, no handlebars, no HANDLEBAARZZZZZZ
- JonathanMead, on 08/15/2008, -8/+18At least she didn't make her give her a ride on her tricycle.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -1/+11No but it would have been perfectly reasonable to give her a ride on her bicycle
- MustacheFace, on 08/16/2008, -2/+12This is true. Rural kids do learn to operate motor vehicles about the same time they can reach the petals. Obviously they don't possess the same judgement as a seasoned driver, but no one really cares when they're driving down dirt roads in the middle of the day to get ice from Circle-K. Underage driving is a daily occurrence in these podunks during the summer months.
- T440, on 08/16/2008, -2/+12Or better yet, a brother.
- ShadowofAres, on 08/16/2008, -1/+11colorado
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+9Or just make it harder to get a damn license.
- DurkaMcDurk, on 08/16/2008, -1/+10Holy *****... That is my hometown, and yes... Crazy ***** up ***** happens there quite regularly.
- MavRevMatt, on 08/16/2008, -2/+11Something happens in Texas... And it gets featured on Boston.com?
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -1/+10With Digg, you never know how popular a comment will be.
- andreo, on 08/16/2008, -0/+9It could have been a hell of a lot better also. Like not having your 12 year old drop you off at the bar.
Also, and I'm going out on a limb here, I'm going to guess that this isn't the dumbest thing that's going on in the house. And it's not so much the kid driving, but what she was driving for.
I swear. Some people should simply not be allowed to breed. - 1ISIS1, on 08/16/2008, -2/+11can anyone point me to the onion logo...cant find it
- Spaceomega, on 08/16/2008, -1/+10My driving school instructor grew up on a farm and drove to town (15 miles) at age 8 frequently and is now the best driver I've ever met. Maybe they should implement some sort of early driving practice (a set course would work) for younger children, maybe that would make them safer than they are now?
- sexybobo, on 08/16/2008, -0/+8That is what i was thinking it was probably a lot safer for the kid to drive then the drunk ass mom.
- absurdist, on 08/16/2008, -3/+11Here in "The Heartland" (i.e. California), I was driving various work trucks, forklifts from about the age of 10 on private property, and riding motorcycles (dirt bikes) from about 12. Getting a license at 16 was a mere formality, as I had a few years' driving experience by then. The people digging you down seem to think their precious snowflakes should, with driving as well as so many things, not have any exposure whatsoever until they reach the magic legal age. And then they wonder why their kids (well, ok, not their kids - everyone else's) are ***** up and incompetent.
- Hyperion1144, on 08/16/2008, -2/+9This is more common than some might think among the poor-redneck-hillbilly-white trash classes. I have seen this myself when I was growing up. I have had friends of mine tell me about things like happening as well. They aren't called fly-over states for nothing.
Welcome to world of poor white trash. I grew up living right next to it... - Skooma714, on 08/16/2008, -4/+11*audible gasp*!
You weren't at the government sanction arbitrary revolutions around the sun! - willster580, on 08/16/2008, -1/+8I think unicycle would have been most appropriate.
- P373Y, on 08/16/2008, -0/+7Illinois
- Ugoff, on 08/16/2008, -0/+6Yeah what gives, I would have expected this story to come from Florida.
- bjornski, on 08/16/2008, -0/+6I grew up hunting, my dad taught me to drive the truck at 12 year old in case something happened where he couldn't drive for help.
I "knew how" to drive, but shouldn't be considered a "driver".
That took me until about age 30. - dimension128, on 08/16/2008, -1/+7Yea apparently the girl in the article didn't do such a great job. But this is a completely valid point.
Take for example the Pine Ridge reservation in SD. (Supposedly a sovereign nation, but to this day our government still breaks its promises, and uses force to control whatever they want.)
There is no such thing as a drivers license. People drive as soon as they are ready. Its not abnormal to see, for example: a 12-14 year old behind the wheel, and doing a damn good job of being an alert defensive driver.
Not that I'd want to see that kind of thing anywhere else in America today. People just don't understand discipline or responsibility. Hell I'm starting to think the only universally understood meme in America is apathy.
But the point is, just because it works in your society, doesn't mean its right for everyone. -
