- ghm101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45This is a downward spiral -
Stupid people smoking so they can have stupid underdeveloped children with underdeveloped IQs.
Who will grow up and go on to try and outdo their mothers for general stupidity.
And so it goes on and on, ever further into a depressingly bleak future landscape of morons.
Or am I over reacting? - cybortrip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41WOW. here's a quote from the article which more or less sums it all up
Spokesman Charlotte Davies said: "Much research has shown that women who smoke during pregnancy give birth to babies on average 7oz lighter than those born to those who don't. Not suprisingly, tobacco industry spokesmen suggested this was a big 'plus' for mothers-to-be that were just too impatient to wait a whole 9 months for their wee babes." - attila, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Sounds like something straight out of that mocumentary, "Thank You for Smoking" Although this was a report in UK papers, I've seen many expecting mothers in the United States smoking. I don't know their reasoning, probably nothing more than ignorance, but it never ceases to amaze me.
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33god i hope this is very rare and anecdotal, because these kids are in for a rough life if their mothers are this selfish before they are even mothers.
- billmania, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Less painful childbirth!? What a bunch of pussies.
- quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Fifteen years down the line, when the kid is a sickly and nonathletic teenager with breathing problems:
"I just wanted you to know that you turned out this way because I wanted to make your birth a little less painful. I love you though. Really." - bdmbdm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Here's a quick thought. If you don't want to push a baby out of your vagina, don't get pregnant!
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Smoking while you're pregnant is a selfish and horrible act. Perhaps they'll get drunk before going into labor to "ease the pain," as well? Who cares about the baby, afterall; as long as those teens can keep having sex without any consequences, they're happy. V_V;
- thefirelane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15In 1971, the president of Philip Morris, Joseph Cullman, was asked about a study, which showed that mothers who smoked gave birth to smaller babies. "Some mothers would prefer having smaller babies," was his response.

And I thought he was a monster :) - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Sign of the times. There are people out there that consider children nothing more than a source of income, which is pretty rotten at best. Personally I like my neighbor who proudly refers to his children as his "***** trophies". I'm guessing his wife doesn't put out much ;)
- GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If you go through a doorway, at some point, are you not in the doorway? Once you are in a doorway, can you not go out of it?
- blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@masamunecyrus
Took the words right out of my mouth. When I got married I told my wife, we're not having kids until you quit smoking. She smoked for the next 6 months, we decided we were ready for a kid, she quit (thankfully she had already started cutting back, so quitting was not as bad as it was when she tried to quit in college), and boom, now we have a beautiful 14-month old boy who is as healthy as a horse. (Born 22", 9lbs, Now 32", 27lbs.) - mtwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Less painful childbirth!? What a bunch of pussies. "
Am I the only one that is seeing some irony and humor in this? Thanks for making me laugh. - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I kinda agree. I mean, if it hurts, it hurts and I don't think 7oz will change very much. You might as well just suffer the extra pain (if you even notice it) and have a healthier baby, and you'll probably be off smoking for good if you stop for 9 months.
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Add this to the list of stupid things teenage mothers do.... it goes right below "get pregnant."
- kpw1179, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Washing her tube won't do anytihng. Instead maybe she should have them tied.
Might have to think about that one... - attila, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You hit the nail on the head. I think that's exactly the point. Given the child actually survives their mothers smoking during pregnancy...
- Kbennett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's good to see us Americans don't have a monopoly on stupidity yet.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't think the teens are smoking to have smaller children. I think they just cant stop smoking and when someone asks them why they just make up some ***** reason.
- ghm101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Speaking now as someone who lives in the UK.
I would like to argue against that comment.
Except it is true. - ryanknapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It must be part of getting old but the more I do the more I think people shouldn't be allowed to make decisions for themselves.
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Like it was already said, people can be so selfish. It makes me mad to see a pregnant person smoking, just as much as it makes me mad to see either a father or mother smoking in their car, with the windows rolled up, and they have small children in the car... children that can't say "Hey mommy (or daddy), please stop, you're giving me second hand cancer."
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They should smoke really a lot, like 2-3 packs a day, inhaling thoroughly, so maybe they can avoid childbirth altogether.
There are already way too many babies brought into the world and raised by idiots! - wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wherever she lives they have really strange doctors. I'm pretty sure that's not the advice Doctor's in the UK give.
- xenuxenuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My wife said that she's heard of doctors that say to keep smoking if it stresses the woman out too much to quit. I imagine they're all older doctors. My wife quit within a week or 2 of finding out she was pregnant. I quit a few months later, which was a bitch after smoking for 20 years. I found it finally gave me a good enough reason to quit.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@BrianHoliday
In the womb it is potential life. It is not recognized as a life until it is born, so an abortion wouldn't be killing it.
And for you religious fanatics (Christian in particular), the child recieves its soul when it is born, not at conception. Every time a child is born, a soul is taken from the Chamber of Guf, and when the Guf runs out of souls, the world will end (see Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_guf). So those supporting abortion are really just trying to prolong the end of the world. And I support that. - collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try the BBC's take on the same article. All the evidence is anecdotal, and from a government minister. Neither source particularly reliable. The Daily Mail is never worth trusting for its "news"
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5405194.stm?ls - xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Assuming this actually works, and the pregnancy is less painful, aren't they just making it worse on themselves? I mean, at some point that 9 months of smoking could catch up to them in the form of cancer.
Which is less painful, something the body naturally does, or cancer? - misteral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sadly, my sister smoked through BOTH her pregnancies. I'm not one to keep quiet about it, so whenever she said she felt like a cigarette, I'd ask if the baby felt like one too. Her answer was always that any doctor you talk to would tell you that you shouldn't quit while you're pregnant.
:( - humblepatience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is so ***** up - another reason to be Pro-Choice
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People are stupid and inconsiderate. I can't wait until we kill ourselves off.
With the overall dumbing down of average intelligence, im sure it wont be long now. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know it's heartless of me, but I have no respect for people that do things like this.
Firstly, I'm in the UK. Most teenage girls that get knocked up aren't exactly the brightest, or most thoughtful in the world. Most of them decide to keep it as well. They get told things, like they can get time off of school, they get money from the government, they get their parents/whatever to look after them, as well as free care for them as well.
We need to stop helping these people. If they cannot support themselves, fine, help them out. Only if they really care for the child though. Only if they are mature enough to care for it when it has grown up, and can support it. Give it an education and such.
If they can't.... Abortion, use the kid for stem cells (Although I can see this would offend a lot of people...), or have them taken away at birth.
Argh. I get so worked up over issues involving children. I don't feel ANYONE that keeps their child, and smokes, drinks, does drugs, etc, while they're carrying a child should have the right to keep it. No matter who you are. It's child abuse, and you're ***** up your kid. - AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7it's through the vagina , out of the uterus.
But I agree with your message. :) - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hell, I had my arms and legs removed, finally decided I didn't like the rest of me either. At least I came out a head.
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Did your mother smoke during her pregnancy? The injustice here is that the kid has no say in the matter and will be born with disadvantages compared to his peers. Not only because of socio-economic reasons but also in mental and physical potential.
- blankman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Parents who do this are morons. Not only does smoking during pregnancy cause all kinds of complications for the baby (premature birth, etc) but it also has a correlation with SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome). 70% of mothers who had a SIDS baby were also smokers.
Read about it yourself here: http://sids-network.org/experts/smok.htm - SnapETom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Reminds me of this picture.
http://www.snopes.com/photos/signs/graphics/pregnant.jpg - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Despite all your dramatic repeating of slogans, abortion is not 'killing a baby', unless the fetus has matured to the stage when it can survive without the mother, after being delivered.
A BABY is a born, independently alive organism. A fetus or a zygote is NOT!
It is a potential...and the choice must inevitably be up to the mother (and father), despite all the ignorant politicians and religious fanatics trying to interfere by imposing their own ignorant ideas on others! - Forever-Zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe if these teenage mothers weren't completely irresponsible and careless and used protection, they wouldn't have to smoke to help ease the pain.
Just a thought.
(Unless they are from a place where protection is not readily available) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2rofl, ***** trophies.. that's a first.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, it's not that intelligence is going down... We've always been pretty stupid. It's just that now, thanks to technology, it's much easier to kill ourselves off. I mean, just think how difficult it'd be to create a world-ending catastrophe without nuclear weapons. The fact that we have them in the first place is a major sign of our combined intelligence and stupidity.
- spjmm0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Happens in Bemidji MN
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But, using protection is a sin. /sarcasm
Apparently, in this day and age, getting knocked up is less looked down upon than having premarital sex without getting pregnant. - collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read this story on the BBC's site yesterday, which is generally a whole lot more objective than the Daily Mail, which is a terrible paper. It basically had a headline similar to this, but reading the article said the following,
"Ms Flint told the meeting she had heard about the issue anecdotally from health professionals, and from young women she had met."
So it is a case of possibly the crappest newspaper in the UK, the Daily mail taking evidence from a Mrs Flint, a govenrment minister (also a particularly bad source of objective information), giving anecdotal evidence.
I imagine that perhaps two people have ever thought that, but the crappy newspapers in this country go for the shock headline evry time, over objective journalism. - drommer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Idiocy and carelessness seems to have no limit nowadays...
- Metman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So much for Natural Selection. *sigh*
- xhan104, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2why dont they just get an abortion instead of torturing the poor child for their selfish needs. Besides, when its born it'll only endup getting pregnant 12 years later and the whole cycle begins again!
- zeero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well thats kinda where the world is heading...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is why women lie. They're held to different standards than men. If you paid attention, that same study (or a similar one) demonstrated that women are just as interested in sex as men, dispelling a great myth that women don't care about sex. Note that I said equally, not more. So thank you for reinforcing the double standard. Women who have a lot of sex have poor impulse control (typical women), whereas what do you have to say about men who do the same? Why should women be held to a higher standard than men?
- BufordT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1macwierdo
Using rocks as an analogy is possibly one of the worst argument presentations I have ever seen. -
