- Djerrid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+64Hey, I think I saw this movie before. It was an 80s buddy movie with a dog, right? The bad guy laughed when the hero put his seat belt on, then the hero rammed into a short brick wall and the baddie went through the windshield and over the wall.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50This type of thing takes balls of steel.
Bravo - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -9/+54Ahhh, another single-occupant SUV off our roads.
- Toon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45There were also similar scenes in "Steel Magnolias," "On Golden Pond," and "Barney Re-enacts Television Crashes and Then Sings about It: Volume IV." Check YouTube. (Volumes 1-3 weren't nearly as classy as IV. Those didn't use Roman numerals.)
Seriously, though, it takes balls to do it, but I've done this before as well. I wasn't being held hostage, per se, but if you were on a date with her, you would have done the same thing. She barely limps now. - nacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36"35 mph crash into a car moving at 35 mph = a 65 mph crash"
Actually, 35 + 35 = 70mph but thats just nitpicking. ;-) - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34The gunman got OWNED!
- kenahoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31@nacs: MateFrio must have been using vector math. If the two cars weren't approaching each other perfectly head-on, but at about a 40 degree angle, the net crash speed would be about 65 mph. =)
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31There's a video?
- MateFrio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Why he slammed his vehicle into another......
35 mph crash into a wall = a 35 mph crash and a pissed off gunman.
35 mph crash into a car moving at 35 mph = a 65 mph crash and a stunned or better gunman.
The kid was smart.... He just wasn't thinking the other car may not be buckled. - karn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Who wants to bet the gunman sues the kid driving?
- MSTK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Thanks for linking us to CNN.com. We wouldn't have found the correct URL otherwise.
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I imagine not since they'll be able to read about it on the news.
- Jaq524, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Wow, CNN actually used that swirly-transition effect. I thought that was just for people editing sample videos in the Apple store to try out iMovie.
Seriously, even people in my 9th grade Creative Imaging class knew that was amateurish. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20It makes perfect sense why he crashed into a car instead of a light post. He would have had to sped up faster than 45mph before crashing in order to knock this guy out. Thus alerting the crook to his intentions that he´s going to crash this sob. so 40mph +45mph oncoming = 90mph of force ;D smart move.
- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Lock Stock &2 Smoking Barrels had a similar scene with Vinnie Jones, one of the baddest assess on the planet.
- doktorrocket, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21I just watched the video, looks likes there's a substantial telephone pole right near the crash scene. Seems like a preferable target for this tactic.
Then again, as the submitter mentioned, I'm noticing this as I sit at my desk watching a video, not making a split second decision with a gun at my head. - tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Great idea...."Are you wearing a seatbelt?" "No..." "GOOD!"... *crash!!*
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15also, a telephone pole would be more dangerous to the driver, it limits the point of impact making the crash harder and more focused. If he accidentally hit more towards his side than the car jacker's, he could've killed himself.
- Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@ Jeffrey903
Did you even read the post that you just replied to? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Telephone pole would be best.. you can aim it so that side of the car gets crushed..
I dont blame this kid for his split second decision.. an SUV was a good choice to.. - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11http://www.cnn.com/video/player/player.html?url=/video/us/2006/10/13/king.carjack.king&checkAgain=false&wm=native_nm
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12D'oh just noticed my crappy mathematical error. Need more beer.
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Yay the news channel this is linked to is for my hometown. Booyah Bend Oregon Represent!
- gravis86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@dolemite5005:
Why don't I hold a gun to your head and see how clearly you can think?
Don't blame the kid. He made a quick decision and did what he thought was right. I doubt if you were under the same circumstances you would be thinking: well, I have to save all mankind along with myself, so, uhh... and then BAM! you're dead. Good going, super-thinker. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11the movie Collateral with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx has a similar scene. Tom cruise holds Jamie as a hostage and makes him drive over town to do his errands. Finally Jamie Foxx gets fed up and crashes his taxi into a construction site.
- sonnysavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Last Action Hero anyone?
- Naruto28, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I knew SUV's had to have their uses...
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9We need more guns on the streets. Gotta keep those politicians nervous, after all.
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9word up to that!
- tecmec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Good point, but remember: he hit an _elderly_ driver.
- JangoFett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I imagine he's going to have a difficult time trying to explain this to his insurance company.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"He said: ‘If you do what I say, then you will live,’" Adrian said."
NOBODY recognized this quote!? *****' snakes! - tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6good call kenahoo
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Of course he will get a new car. It's called Car Insurance.
- Ode2no1fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Way to go! Maybe the tactic has been used in movies but I doubt there are many people if any others that have been brave enough to do this for real.
- snoble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6There is definitely a bunch of screwy physics going on in this thread. First off, you don't really double the effect on those internally by hitting a car going the equal speed in the opposite direction. After all, each car begins at 35 mph and ends up at 0mph (this is assuming the cars fuse on impact instead of reflecting). The bulk of the injuries you sustain is from your impact with the internals of your own car. Of course as the speeds and masses get higher you have to worry about getting injured by the buckling of the vehicle.
Also I'm a little skeptical of the energy absorbing front end. Certainly when the cars fuse this front end will lower the amount of vehicle buckling. And it may lower the rate of deceleration, but only by fractions of a second. The damage done to the driver/passenger will be almost completely determined by the amount of momentum he has when he is ejected from his seat and I don't expect the lower deceleration rate would substantially affect this much. - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very screwy
Crashing into an object that aint gonna crumple and move when you hit it is going to do more damage, without risking someone else's life
Still though, I don't think I'd have been able to think clearly enough to do either, good for him - scrubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm surprised he didn't miss a few cars as I would swerve like mad to avoid him.
- jmack111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ tw0bit - Exactly what I was thinking... couldn't have said it better !!!!!
Nice work by the driver, and a good chance to give the gunman a couple of slaps on the way out of the car. - Laike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Smart kid. I'm definately glad he got out ok. I really hope the insurance thing will cover him. And even if it doesn't, the insurance and the ATM combined still isn't worth his life.
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's exactly what I was thinking, he should of ***** up the right side of the car (where the gun man was). I'm assuming this would lesson the amount of damage done to the teen and increase the impact on the attacker.
- Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Could some one post the link to this video.. I'm interested.
- Callidus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"the Chevy sedan he had just bought two weeks ago"
Poor kid, at the very least it should be replaced.
Hope that gunman rots. - Scottyd19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Would he have been arrested had he killed the other driver?
- flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yeah but imagine the ***** the insurance company would get for NOT replacing the car. Bad PR, would not be worth it.
Actually they probably would make a scene out of replacing the car. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Heh, this was also in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrells (a good movie).
- Vokas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree, that was a terrible move, selfish really.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He can do talkshows now and buy an upgrade
- joeyjoeyjoey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7While youre reply is alittle to brash I do tend to agree with it.
He was willing to take another inoccent life to try to save his?
Granted he is fairly young and just obtained his license yet it doesnt sit right that he decided he would involved someone totally unrelated to this. - DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Man...Thats one brave kid.
