So kids will throw stuff, shoot spit balls, talk, etc. and it gets to the point that the teacher gives up and tries to teach the kids that will listen while everyone else ***** with him/her. Here in this case, instead of spit balls there is well...sexual abuse.
There is a psychological concept to explain this behavior. It is called "learned helplessness"

There is a really great early study where a dog was put in a cage with electrical shock every so often. At first the dog would bark and try to attack anything that came near it, but over time it just laid down and stopped moving and eating. - Jonslilbro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+59I don't know if anyone else noticed, but in about the last 10 seconds of the first video, when the guys hand is all the way in her pants, a female looking hand with a black long sleeve shirt on(just like hers) pulls the hand out. Watching the movement of the hand, it appears as if it is moving like a hand behind someones back. I'd say she pulled his hand out, without trying to make it too obvious.

"Lecce authorities are investigating a second video of a Lecce lecturer that in videos posted on video sharing sites is seen being fondled by a number of students.
In the first video students can be seen "touching" and "fondling" their teacher. The young teacher doesn't bat an eyelid despite the obvious sexual abuse. The Italian students can be seen laughing and "enjoying" as one of the students fondles the teacher and her underwear.
The teacher seems to be on her desk explaining while the student embraces and fondles her. Another student is then seen flexing his fingers as he caresses the teacher's bottom.
Another hand is then seen entering the teacher's jeans, undisturbed. In fact, the teacher never disapproves the behaviour of the students, and keeps talking to the rest of the students nonchalantly.
When the first video hit YouTube and other websites, Lecce authorities immediately suspended the lecturer and investigated the matter.
However a second video has been posted on the internet, where the same teacher can be seen talking on her mobile phone. From the back a student mimes sexual acts and touches repeatedly his teacher.
Again the teacher continues talking on her phone as the students are recording the abuse. The controversial video clip ends with the teacher ending her phone call.
The videos have shocked Italy as it uncovers the blatant sexual abuse rife in schools in Italy. It is not the first time YouTube uncovered sexual abuse in schools. Note that in both cases the teacher simply allowed it, they did not encourage or request it.

I used to live in Greece for the most part of my life (I now live in Canada) and I went to school up until Grade 6.
And you are completely right, if you were the "nerd" everyone would look up you and they would respect you.
What I notice from North America is the people at school judge upon personality and not how you do in school.
