cnn.com — An estimated 15,000 people died in Bangladesh from the powerful cyclone Sidr. Though you may not be able to be there to help, donate toward one of eight organizations and impact your world.

        • davidrools, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1$50/mo to IJM, $25/mo to world vision, $200+/mo to my local church and community organizations....and more when needed for disaster relief, or when people are in need (lost job, medical bills, etc.). Needless to say I don't take the standard deduction on my taxes. giving frees you from being owned by your money and things. it ain't easy, but it gets easier when you see the good that comes of it.

    100% legit and very efficient - they have a 4 star rating from charity navigator. 98.2% efficient fundraising last I checked. That means 98 cents out of every dollar you give goes to that cause. much better than most charities you'll see out there.

If a catastrophe happens anywhere else the deaths are in the hundreds but if it happens in Bangladesh the deaths are much higher due to the excessive population. I really feel sorry for their situation but when 150 million people are packed into an area the size of the state of New York these things will happen. Especially if the area is prone to hurricanes and floods.

And it is also true that the people there have not done much about it. But what can they do? More than half the Bengali population is illiterate and live on less than a dollar a day. They can't just suddenly start building complex sewage systems and an emergency relief fund. Hell, they can't even get their government together.

When we can take care of our own people and actually have a little extra to lend to others, *then* we can consider helping out the rest of the world.

  • greenehawke, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1As I read through the comments from when this was first posted, I feel compelled to put it up in front of us again. We are not alone in this world. To care for one catastrophe or natural disaster does not imply the lack of care for another. We had horrendous destruction in the US in Arkansas, Alabama, Tenn etc from last week's tornadoes. But that does not mean we stop caring about others or acting from compassion rather than hatred. Be nice .... be good to each other... Now go out and play kids... the undercurrent here seems to say... yeah sure kids... go play on the railroad tracks... then we don't have to feed you tonight.
    Puhleeze. Lets have a wake up call and quit hating and spewing trash about.
