- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65That would be way too convenient
- kazuhima, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47better than having the money go to RIAA/MPAA.....
- micro506, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42Why can't we have a delete comment feature?
- quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34and a ***** of embargos
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35They're pirates, not even they know. They need to go dig it back up once the other half of the treasure map is found.
- mattb5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I hope they can rent some space out to AllOfMp3.com too
- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Islands dont rust so I digg it :)
- wm2010russ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26i wouldn't mind if they decided to change location... no offense but sealand is just a rusting piece of crap, and i think an actual island would be much nicer to live on (granted, it would be more difficult to get power to the island, create infrastructure, etc.) Im just saying, i take this project seriously, and when i drop by to visit i dont want to get tetanus climbing up the ladder
- Sp4nk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31People sending money to help out a site with pirated material. Oh the irony.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Wouldn't it be way better (and cheaper and cooler) to buy a big ***** boat and anchor that in the middle on the ocean? That would be real pirate ***** right there...
- inarguable, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26I just heard that the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (SEAL TEAM SIX) have been developing contingency plans in case they have to assault Sealand in the future. It turns out that a consortium of nefarious scum - Dr.Evil from Austin Powers, Rosie O'Donnell, Cobra Commander and Destro (Storm Shadow decided to sit this one out), Cindy Sheehan, Gargamel (from the Smurfs), Jabba the Hutt (oh, wait, i already said 'Rosie O'Donnell), and the two fat black kids from 'Good Burger' - have made a backdoor bid on the place and have shut Pirate bay out. They are apparently looking for a location from which to pursue their plans of global domination from. They even hired Mike Nifong to handle the legalities of the transaction.
- doubleblack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21In other news, a doctor just announced that President Bush has an I.Q. of 48 and is what some people call mentally retarded.
- Victor645, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I don't know what it is, but the idea of buying an island for the sake of not having laws seems exciting and erotic to me. I hope something comes from this.
- Domiko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Yes, we're all glad for you. Congratulations.
HOWEVER, to business! (To business!)
As you may know, Mr Rob, we have provided you a service -- the service of digging you up to the front page. And this service (as services are wont to be) is not free. It comes with a GREAT price. The price.... of your SOUL!!!!
MANICAL LAUGHTER!
We also accept money orders. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16if you read the private islands online link, you'd see that they say there are 4 uninhabited homes :P
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16They need internet access though...
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Now Disney and MPAA will hate them even more fore they will the Pirates of the Caribbean.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm happy this fell through, IMO the sealand guy sounds crazy. Plus he was asking an unrealistic amount for a crappy platform
- kKhan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14One of the islands being discussed:
http://www.privateislandsonline.com/caillecbgr.htm
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Grenada&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=12.28755,-61.58191&spn=0.012223,0.030556&t=h - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13No, but Micronations are.
- manova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You can't buy an island and call it a nation. Every piece of land has already been claimed by some country, and I doubt a country could be talked into selling sovereign land (unless at gunpoint). In a another discussion, someone posted the story of the Republic of Minerva:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Minerva - flyzipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If they're good negotiators, perhaps they'll get a movie star and a professor thrown in for free.
- InfamousX241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9My question is, how much money does TPB actually have?
- michaelg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Well, this is a lot about principle. Many trackers can survive when hosting copyrighted torrents in countries that are tough on it such as the US. Although, TPB is creating a movement and trying to show the RIAA and MPAA that they can't stop them and they should concede their efforts and instead work towards helping customers rather than themselves.
- Dundasbro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Motion to name said island Petoria when it is bought!
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Panama? The Philippines? Grenada? If TPB sets up shop at one of those locations, they better watch out for *real* pirates. I'm sure a couple crazy Filipinos with machine guns aren't going to be afraid of a few computer geeks on their own island. The geeks, and the servers, will disappear over night.
- EztliNahua, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10irc://irc.limelight.us/tpb-nation
IRC link, paste it in the address bar. Using the limelight EFNet server. - gwalbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why aren't they stealing/conquering an island, like true pirates?
No seriously, I hope it all works out one way or the other. Someone has to have the balls to put this copyright absurdity and corruption to rest, and it looks like these fellas have balls of... *****, I don't know... adamantium? - hambend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7So far, maybe $13-$15K. Not much, but it only took them a couple of days. I'd expect donations to pick up momentum once (if!) people start to realize that this could actually happen.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Sealand just enjoyed its 15minutes of fame for this year. Next year they will have to do something like catch fire again to make the news.
Its dead, account suspended.
http://duggmirror.com/offbeat_news/TPB_drops_Sealand_Purchase/
Scroll to the bottom and see the islands they are reviewing. - TheElectricMonk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8canada is on the list of uninhabited islands...
- itistoday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Since when do pirates *pay* for islands???
- manova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Good in theory but...
http://www.privateislandsonline.com/your-own-country.htm - doubleblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, obviously...
TPB doesn't have $2,000,000,000 to purchase a country...
They don't even have $1,000,000 (1/2000th of that) - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well if the island really costs two billion dollas it's probably a little more feasible to make it an island instead.
- morpo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Imagine a nation completely free of copyright laws - One with the only ties binding it to the rest of the world being an OC-192 fiber optic cable. You could make a ***** of money.
- itistoday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Are the donations tax-deductable?
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Oh, I can agree with the principle of it - I think the Pirate Bay are ***** great, along with the Pirate Party in Sweden.
There is, however, a bit of the blind leading the blind about this.
They're looking for a huge sum of money - Hundreds of millions of dollars - for a very small raised fort that sits off the coast of the UK. Now, the idea might seem good, but the thing is, if they ever set up and did anything illegal - as I imagine most of you are thinking about them doing, more so than them just hosting a tracker which they're doing fine right where they are without an astronomical expense, the UK would stick it's oar in, so to speak.
Sealand is NOT it's own country, no matter what they want to say, and if they were doing anything they shouldn't then England would just shut them down.
It's a waste of far too much money. - gamebittk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6THIS JUST IN: Purchase NOT dropped, negotiations start tommorow.
http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Sealand_Purchase_NOT_Dropped_Negotiations_Start_Tomorrow - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+56 miles, 3 miles of their water, 3 miles of yours.
- sdevoid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Pirate Bay buys the island off Grenada. They set up a huge torrent tracking server for loads of $$. Then the US invades and shuts the thing down: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Grenada
(Or simply tells all of the Tier 1's to deny TPB access. - buckuncle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you guys know, just now adays to get hydro to run a powerline and some poles to your cottage costs thousands upon thousands for all the people who back in the day decided it would be smart to live 'off the grid' but who are now changing their minds,
Imagion how much its going to cost to run some powerlines to an island.
I dont see this happening without millions of dollars
look how much phone companies spend to have ships overseas repairing fiber optics, it aint cheap. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5On second thought, those are the "Iles Marquises." They look scary.
http://www.marquises.pf/2Ua-Pou_danse.jpg
This could help, though:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_uninhabited_islands - OOTay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yeah so what, were talkin about pirates here mmkay?
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Distributed computing. Like seti@home. Don't host TPB anywhere. Host it on millions of people's PCs.
- MaiSacNjoMouf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@kazuhima
Best point so far... I would give you two diggs if I could! - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Tour it? last story I heard said they were giving citizenship to anyone who donated cash...
- avolant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yeah. cuba should try a server farm. that would set their economy straight.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@sfacets
