http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/4343/coke1ll.gif - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+77If it's subliminal, then what's the message? Suck more *****? How the hell would that sell more coke?
It's not subliminal; It was a joke (prank). As stated by the artist. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66I'm using Netscape Navigator 3.0, and I got 4 popups. Then my browser crashed, and I got a BSOD :(
- dankosaur, on 10/12/2007, -18/+50deleted (dig down)
- biffta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Of course it's old, the article itself states it's from the 80s!!!
- Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29you guys obviously don't watch enough porn.
- rayearth42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26It's a three-pronged attack. Subliminal, liminal, and superliminal.
- scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30...So Insightful
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Agreed. Just a prank. Apparently people don't know what the word "subliminal" means.
- snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26[what's with the brackets?]
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18So old. Decades yeah.. but here it is today. That's perpetual advertising. "Oh my God .. a penis! That's hilarious! Honey .. could you grab me a coke?"
- Ligeia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"Hey you! Join the navy!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17here is a hint:
8====> O:) - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I had zero pop-ups with Firefox. But you had five? Sounds like a job for Geek Squad!

- clokwise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12As someone who has worked in the ad industry for over a decade, I can assure you that subliminal marketing can be a MAJOR factor in some campaigns. In my agency we often discussed and demonstrated the subject, in secret of course. Quite often the client was never made aware of the subliminal images. I am certain COKE would have known in this case.
Fact is, subliminal images can make a difference in the success of a campaign. They don't all have to be as blatant as the above example; 9 times out of 10 we just screen "sex" or sometimes "yes" on top of the final artwork. In the above case, and pretty much any similar printed beverage ad, the ice cubes are airbrushed by talented artists who "know" how to create the appropriate imagery - those are NOT photos of ice. Sex and death and typical imagery. I doubt this guy got fired, he probably got moved to another division at worst, and probably given a promotion as well.
There are some academics who have tried to bring subliminals to the attention of the public, but because they are often too sensationalist, people tend to bash them as kooks (which they may be to some extent - Canadian Prof. Wilson Brian Key for example). However, subliminals are REAL and in your face more often that you would ever care to know. Ever see the movie "They Live" where people put on the sunglasses and suddenly all the slogans appeared everywhere - that's pretty close to reality, and has been for over 30 years in the USA. Fact is, when people are told the truth they don't WANT to believe it and their usual reaction is anger. The more you insist the angrier they get. It's an odd psychological phenomenon. Here's a test : Vote me down if you angrily disagree with what I've just said. If you vote up, consider yourself open minded enough to at least consider the possibility. - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"There need to be more jokes out there like this."
There are, you just don't notice them... - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It's not subliminal because it's not trying to get people to sub-consciously desire Coca-Cola or anything else. It's just a prank by the artist.
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What was that song? Oh yeah. Coke can suck a big fat dick.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Ah good ol digg bias. Somebody mentions Firefox and people praise the all mighty Mozilla. Somebody mentions IE7 blocks popups too and down he goes into the depths of oblivion.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I remember a wave of this sort of thing. There were black pepsi cans with neon lights 'randomly' jetting across them, but if you stacked them correctly, it clearly said "sex".
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9try Mosaic, that will block all the popups.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Sneaky Aussie bugger :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I like to think there's a Tyler Durden in every movie theater, TV station, and magazine company.
- rprouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Coke said it was a joke on the part of the artist when it was found, but that doesn't mean that it is true, Coke could have been covering their butts.
In about 1986, Coke released some limited edition cans with a wavy line running around the can. If you cut the can and spread it out so you could see the whole thing, or if you put two cans together, the line very clearly spelled sex in cursive script. I used to have two cans lined up perfectly on my shelf because I thought it was funny, but is it very different?
Also, notice that the year is very similar to this case. Maybe Coke was experimenting with subliminal advertising? - wisie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Is the 'MUST SEE' really that necessary?
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i didn't see it either i kept staring at the lil green thing.attempting to create something out of it.
- moonhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sydney is in New South Wales not South Australia.
- famousdave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4IE7 is a pop-up
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9lynx ftw
- guydownundr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Every now and then something comes up that reminds me that its good to be Australian. Now is one of those times....
- clokwise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google "Wilson Brian Key" for starters. Bear in mind he comes off as a nutjob. And you're likely to find more sites bashing him than agreeing with him. However he has written several books on the subject if you want to learn more.
Or try this site: http://www.sampsoncc.edu/staff/pwolf/subliminals.htm - I wouldn't claim all the examples on the page are actual intentional subliminals, in fact some are obviously stupid photoshop cases, but I'd assume many of the older examples are. - vajra918, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm using IE7 on Vista, and I didn't get any popups.
- butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It does make me ask myself what sort of person it is that can stare at a picture and see a Penis or a Sexual Act being carried out.Its the visual equivalent of spotting double entendres.
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't tell what is going on in that website. It looks like it was made by me in junior high...and with a cracker jack toy for a scanner.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wrong reply. Bury.
- macneib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2She wants coke? I think she's sucking the wrong dick.
/obligatory Bob Saget reference. - Camsta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is so ***** old....
- Duncast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2haha awesome, originated in South Australia too.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thank god it wasn't supraliminal or we would all be drinking coke right now.
- vblvbl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Subliminal requires that it be below the layer of conscious perception. Most of us looked a the poster and saw it within seconds - so, as stated, not subliminal.
And incidentally, it doesn't have to be about "buying Coke" to be subliminal. You could have a subliminal message saying any number of things, such as, "Learn about the meaning of subliminal."
Morons dugg me down. Digg this down, bitches! - sheepster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anybody know how long this was going around before it was discovered?
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Im voting you down because you equate voting you up with being smart. Youre an idiot. Provide some evidence to you claim, not some "if you think im dumb its because you = owned by subliminal advertising". Thats like 12yo kid logic there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how many snopes are we going to see? we all know the site, we all know the cokelore.
- eddieo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I never did like Cocka-Cola.
- DatoeDakari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ shinda
I'm not being peer pressured, I happen to really like Firefox, it was just getting really annoying having to switch browsers every time I wanted to watch a video or view something in Quicktime. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on... I bet the artist started out making it a picture of a woman taking a swig of ice-cool refeshing coke... and then it became less clear! Joe Camel (of Caml Cigarettes fame) was much much MUCH more of a walking phallic symbol than some diminutive pseudo suggestive reflection.
- joevill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gives new meaning to Enjoy Coca Cola!
