- aakrzemi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+348130$ to rent for a few days, huh? That's about the same coast as owning a girlfriend.
- iam413x, on 10/12/2007, -7/+169If $130 gets you a girlfriend for 10 days, what would an exra $20 get you?
;) - TheRingmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+85Dude should look on Craigslist
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+69Ha ha ha

lol...too true. in fact I think girlfriends are more expensive than that...well mine is anyway. It kills me. - shadowstorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+55from the article: The advertisement said the woman should be "an honest, kind and similar-aged girl with a diploma."
ironic, isn't it? - davidsmero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46Doesn't he know he can take bus 11b to go down to 22nd street, meet a guy named Martinez, pay him $25 and get a girl?
- desertrose, on 10/12/2007, -9/+52@ldavid
sadly, i'm the one that has to pay for my boyfriend majority of the time, ahah. he's in need of a job :/ - drvelocity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38Let me spoil the details for everyone. His name is Ronald Miller and he ended up landing the chick after the 10 days were up anyway since they both learned that popularity has no intrinsic value and personal relationships, such as the one they just cultivated through their farcical agreement, are vastly more important than being worshipped at school for being cool. Everything came to a head on New Years day when the girl in question got drunk at a party and saw Ronald making out with other girls that liked him for his newfound popularity at school. She threw her drink at the record player (no comment), stopping the music, and announcing to everyone the details of the paid agreement. He went back to nerd status the following day, just another digger. She followed him a few days later and the rest is history!
Currently the two enjoy activities together such as cruising lawns on Ronald's riding lawn mower and driving around in his souped-up station wagon. - MicrosoftBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33I know some people who would rather rent *the parents* to show to their girlfriends.
- towca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30From what I read, China has a huge girl deficit. He's going to have a hard time getting a partner as I see ... even if he's willing to pay by the hour.
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31"...he's in need of a job..."
Oh dear oh dear. That's just too easy, I oughtn't take the opportunity. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Probably meant "honest looking."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36i don't know what you diggers are talking about... we don't have girlfriends, we're nerds

- boomerxl, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Japan and China have 30,000 years of recorded civilisation between them, not to mention huge cultural differences, completely different family and social structures, also one is communist, the other is not.
"I guess it's the same in China too,not very far apart"
Ladies and Gentlemen your public education system at work. - aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19damn it, I got found out

- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16a good way to keep rental costs down is to break up immediately before birthdays, christmas, and valentine's day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I know one 'lonely girl' that would pretend to be his girlfriend.
- johnlandes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13He's trying to find a girl to impress his parents, not screw them (although, that could impress them - who knows)

- iam413x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@3dom
Lol, I expected someone to post that eventually. - krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8He's looking for a girl that's "honest"??? Sorry, pal, but I don't think that an honest girl would go along with this crazy scheme of yours.
- n00ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@EBFoxbat
probably a better salary then what most of the people in china earn a day - humby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7...simulated sex must be loud enough for parents to hear...
- aikahanyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7He's looking for an "honest" girl to be his fake girlfriend? Ironic.
- sdphost, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Actually real girlfriends are way more expensive.
- ic00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ HesNikke
You've got one part right. Let me straight out couple of things for others.
First, we do have unbalanced boy/girl ratio, but because of being a rural country long ago, we couldn't change the situation overnight. Because early generations were lacking foresight on this problem (most farmer were illiterate), many of us have to take the consequences, just like the Baby Boom in US.
Second, quote from @ HesNikke "i don't think worrying about girls is the problem. it's worrying about FINDING girls". Educational system is quite different from US. You have to make study as you life to get to higher and higher education. Pretty much you only one shot on your entry exams to your junior high, high school, and college. If you fail, you're out of game. Beijing Univ. is like the Harvard in US, can you imagine how hard he has to study to stay there and compete with 4.95 million graduates (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2006-11/29/content_745409.htm) when he is out there. With pressures on from school and family, I don't think he could be any stylish, hopefully not ugly. So most of students in China developed very good study skills, but pretty much no social skills.
Last, dating game is way different from US. In China, dating for people who were born before 80s is more like pre-marriage. People narrow down to one, and start dating. In US, people date and narrow down to one to marry. For those who were set up by parents, dating is as simple as "check out and get married if it's good". - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hope this one turns out better than that kid who hung himself after meeting his blinddate.
- pcronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5In soviet Russia, girlfriend rents you!
- Quiplash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dugg for description which made me LOL
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Reminds me of that 80s teen flick Can't Buy Me Love.
- thripper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"The CNN.com video experience is optimized for Windows Media player or above.
No Windows Media Player detected."
And a frikin button to get the player. - Jack000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4a country of atheist majority vs a country of christian majority... they probably think you're pretty weird too.
I certainly thought so when I moved here from china : ] - cyberswat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is a huge amount of pressure from parents in some Asian communities to be married to a well educated mate. The importance of that type of union is significantly higher in some cultures than in America. If you've ever actually talked to someone that is being exposed to this type of social pressure from his/her family you could easily understand the logic for the ad. Once you understand why the ad was placed because you've taken the initiative to understand a foreign culture you can see why most of the world does not respect Americans by reviewing the comments on this post.
I have a Vietnamese freind that is subjected to this type of pressure to be socially correct from his families viewpoint. It is a powerful force he deals with on a daily basis. To not understand the motives of the person that placed the ad and instead make some of the comments I see above is pure ignorance and down right mean. In my mind he has much more character than most of you because he is performing this action out of respect to his family vs ridiculing someone without understanding them. - ElGuano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why does this sound like the plot for every other romantic comedy out there?
- mhummel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6More like paradoxical in a "this statement is false" kind of way.
The only way she could be honest and yet still take up the offer if she did indeed become his girlfriend. In which case as other people have pointed out he's bidding way below the market price.... - MicrosoftBob, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"anicejew... Whatever happened to him?"
I think he ran into anicemengele. - undergrace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As long as his family doesn't own 1,000 ancient mirrors it could be rather uneventful...
- deathw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dont get why such lame stories make digg, no offence i would like to hear news about new tech, or our goverment or anything that means something to our lives. not about some kid who paid off some chick to impress his parents.
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3She should be honest... but not TOO honest when talking to his parents:)
