- theojanke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+129From the team's website's poll:
"How many games will you attend in 2006?"
All of them, home and away: 248
All of them at home: 39
5 to 9 games: 12
1 to 4 games: 29
None: 26085
EDIT: After about 2 minutes, that's up to 26397. - gjd131, on 10/12/2007, -1/+118From Wikipedia, before it gets erased:
A new tradition was started on October 6th 2006, deemed "ROTC target practice." The school's ceremonial cannon lets loose a volley at a random ROTC student's leg. Afterwards, the town's fine citizens spread cheer and wish him the gift of symmetry, threatening to blow off his other leg too if he raises a fuss about it. This new tradition has been met with the community’s full support.
The Target Practice Parade is in the process of being planned to commemorate the October 6th incident. This parade will feature burning effigies of the student, his leg, and his family. The parade will throw out KY jelly to the children, and incorporate a hundred goat processional. It is yet to be announced when the parade will take place. - cheez124, on 10/12/2007, -1/+114i go to snohomish high, its all redneck hicks, and filled with old people that dont want to change anything, and it filled with antique shops, get better brett
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+110Someone please let me know how the Snohomish Football website can handle Digg traffic, yet supposed "tech blogs" can't even handle 40 diggs. (and the thousands of other page views as a result)

what a surprise, no mention of the blast - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+104The worst part is that this isn't even about football. Nobody is trying to cancel the football program. Heck, nobody is even yet trying to cancel the cannon blast. This community has abandoned one of their citizens simply because they fear having their cannon taken away.
I'm glad I don't live there. They should be ashamed of themselves. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+88My letter to the Town:
Congratulations, you have been Dugg! What does this mean for a small town like Snohomish? Well, lets just say you are on the map. Some 400,000+ registered users of Digg have discovered just how backwards your town's values really are. When Brett Karch was proudly doing his job firing the cannon at your High School homecoming football game, you were all his friends. After the tragic accident that nearly took his leg, and could have taken his life, you all disowned him. Some of you blamed him for the accident, all of you chose your tradition over this boy. Need I remind you that without boys like Brett, there would be no traditions. This kid would have gone to war to fight for your traditions, and yet you can't visit him at the hospital, go to his birthday party or wave to him when he visits the school he once proudly attended. In a country like ours, where values are losing ground to religious fanatics and corrupt politicians, your town is the poster child of getting it wrong. I hope you are proud. - Hazardc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+73The best part is Bill Shankly..... was a soccer coach.

What is a sick ***** town. Driven by High School football, threatening to break or "blow" off a kids leg for sure.
(Did anybody find out what state this is in by the way, I read the article and briefly searched the site but I will continue to look.)
I seriously want to just kick every single persons ass in that town for being a low-life scum of the earth hicktown piece of trash.
I usually don't act like this but seeing a town not caring for someone but sending threats and even thank you cards saying something like "The cannon is important to our games," is just pathetic.
We should do something drastic to this town, I don't know, have everyone in the digg community send them a few Furby's each(you know "Your emoto-tronic friend") so their town is flooded with annoying, mindless, ignorant flourescent colored creatures (a.k.a pussies)... Oh wait, I think it already is that way in Snohomish. - nerium, on 10/12/2007, -3/+66As mentioned elsewhere the coach's existential philosophy paints a pretty clear picture:

Informational Report 1300 Block Fifth Street
On 10/6/06 at approximately 1904 hours, the ceremonial cannon blew apart at the start of the homecoming football game at the Snohomish High School. The cannon has been used for years to signal the start of and touchdowns during football games. One Snohomish High School male student was taken to the hospital and four others suffered minor injuries. A preliminary investigation was conducted by the Detective Bureau to determine the cause. There was no evidence of foul play and the incident appears to be accidental. The football game and homecoming activities continued as usual." - chewtoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24From the Fark thread:

So to you: You are an ***** - krellor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Letter I sent to the whole list of staff and Brian Danielson:
Brian,
To preface this email I will borrow some of your words. I don’t know you and you don’t know me. I am replying in response to an email that you sent that has been posted in an online community driven news site. While I do not know you personally, and indeed I have never heard of you or read anything about you, I feel compelled to comment on something that I can only describe as an overwhelming sense of apathy that is portrayed of your school and community. While it is true that those who have, as you say “put a black eye on our community” are probably in the minority the fact is that insofar as I can tell not you or anyone else in a position of authority at your school has done anything to counter the actions of those you decry as shameful. By doing nothing you allow the negative feelings in your community to prevail. As was once said by Edmund Burke “All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing”. This quote is truly reflective of your community. The student in question was injured on school grounds, taking part in a school activity, while upholding the traditions that your community obviously values. Yet when he is injured and those ignorant and judgmental few turn on him, you in your complacency and silence facilitate the malice you claim to be against.
In your reply you say “If you know anything about our school or our programs, the kids are always first and everything else secondary”. If that were to be believed as true I would expect that some sort of honorary service would be held or organized by the staff, that upon seeing the negative community reaction it would be the school and its employees that would come together and do the right thing. But no. Your apathy, or maybe fear, prevents you from doing even the slightest to comfort Brett or his family. That no one but family was at his16th birthday party is testament to the overwhelming complacency of his former teachers and instructors. If that had been a student of mine, regardless of whatever social stigma I would face, I would have been there and would have vocally supported him the whole way.
It is true that I only know what has been printed in the media on this issue, and it would not be the first time that the media took a particular angle on a story despite its relation to reality. For the sake of Brett, his family, and the overall social health of your community I hope I am wrong in my present view of you and your town. The fact that your school has done virtually nothing to comfort the family is only amplified by the fact that within hours of this story being posted people from all over the world showed a greater display of empathy and willingness to do something than your entire town did in months. If you need examples of this one source is http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/Student_hurt_by_cannon_blast_at_football_game_Receives_numerous_threats where users began talking about setting up accounts to collect donations for Brett and his family, or to get their contact information to send letters of encouragement. The fact that after reading an article on the issue (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/296584_cannon20.html?source=mypi) I felt like driving over from ******* and doing something while people in your town threaten him speaks volumes on the utter void of compassionate individuals in your community.
So rationalize what you will, and when the topic is broached agree with everyone that the story is horrific, and at the end of the day think of yourself however you will. Just remember that it is your silence and the silence of your peers and co-workers that enables the hostile and misguided to make their threats. No one in your town should fear being ostracized for supporting Brett, on the contrary, it should be the other way around. So maybe I have misjudged you and you and your peers are a victim of bad press. I surely hope so. And on behalf of the original sender that you responded to I apologize for the comment about the quarterback. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Although from the sound of things, in your school, it doesn’t sound like much of anything makes a right, right now.
xoxoxoxo - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Well then why didn't you go to his birthday party you insensitive bastard!

The Cannon Crew: The cannon crew was in charge of firing the ceremonial cannon at the beginning of every home football game, and after the Snohomish team scored. This tradition came to a halt at the Homecoming game of October 2006, when the cannon blew apart, injuring members of the Cannon Crew. Brett Karch, an ROTC cadet responsible for firing the cannon, was hospitalized with a shattered leg. He was subsequently ostracized by classmates and threatened with physical harm if the cannon-firing tradition was discontinued as a result of his injury [1].
