- Violent, on 10/28/2008, -1/+84I'm confused - article says he used "a handful" of dried poppy pods to flavor a batch of home-made beer. Then the next sentence it says he extracted opium from the poppies, which he then converted to morphine. Well? One is QUITE a bit more difficult and involved than the other. Either way f'n cheers! He made it for himself - where's the harm in that? :) At least they will clear it from his record if he keeps his nose clean. End the war on some drugs
- bixby1, on 10/28/2008, -3/+71I'm totally fine with this
- mulling, on 10/28/2008, -4/+61It's hilarious how poppy beer gets turned into 'heroin beer' and 'morphine beer' in the headlines. And by hilarious I mean idiotic.
- MeatMountain, on 10/28/2008, -2/+48I accidentally a six pack of that.
- Jabrams2, on 10/28/2008, -1/+40morphine-laced beer huh? Sounds delicious!

- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+32End the war on SOME drugs? End it on all drugs; it's a waste of taxpayer money.
- sqrt2, on 10/28/2008, -1/+31Shouldn't be illegal. He did it in his own home, for his own consumption, using completely legal constituent ingredients. This just shows how ridiculous prohibition is, it turns law abiding citizens who hurt no one into criminals who we then have to pay to "rehabilitate" or lock up.

- tamman2000, on 10/28/2008, -0/+24Seriously, if they are busting him for this, they should go down to Einsteins and bust the guy baking the poppy seed bagels...

- acklefutz, on 10/28/2008, -0/+22Legalize Opium!
- TheMachine1, on 10/28/2008, -1/+23Morphine naturally occurs in opium so there is no need to convert it. I assume they meant he merely extracted it. Merely boiling the poppies in the same wort he was making beer with is all he likely would have to do.
- degree, on 10/28/2008, -0/+21i find it really funny that such a thing is illegal. one can legally purchase large quantities of low-grade poppie seeds (these have the highest traces of opiates...the expensive glass bottle brands are a no-no as they have been super washed of their alkaloids). no one was hurt in the process and the only person arguably in danger was the man himself. the illegal act was extracting the opiates and converting them to morphine.....but i don't really get how that is unlawful in this case.
it seems as though the law was acting on a moral basis.....but one has to question the morality of supremely ***** up the life of this grad student. the law is here to protect you from yourself....but what is there to protect you from the laws protecting you??!@ - derekmas10, on 10/28/2008, -0/+19what would jesus brew?

- xerodustrial, on 10/28/2008, -0/+12They make it sound like it's hard to do. You can ingest morphine through a variety of imbibed liquids, including water, gatorade, beer, wine, liquor, and even fruit juice. Morphine in its purest form is just a liquid anyways. Drinking it is second only to shooting it up.
Still, I'd totally drink that beer. I wonder how poppies taste in beer for flavor (morphine doesn't really have a taste of its own as a pure chemical).
In reference to the above poster 'Violent' - I believe what the article is implying is that he was making a beer with a morphine theme, so to speak. So he probably did both -- used poppies to flavor the beer knowing the effects from them would be minimal, and then also made/got some morphine and mixed it into the finished product for some kick. - hoisonsauce, on 10/28/2008, -0/+11He should totally create a whole line of painkiller/beer combos.

Analgesic Ale - savoiR, on 10/28/2008, -0/+10logged in just to dig you up. I hate how asinine and ignorant cops and law enforcement officials can be sometimes. just to make enough poppy tea for yourself and another person (maybe) you need about 10 pods a person. So for a handful of poppy pods there wasn't even a lot of morphine per drink (however, it was mixed with alcohol which may magnify its effects on the person drinking the beer). Hell right now I'm in a college dorm and I have about 10 liters of wine in my closet I've been making for about 2 weeks now.

- twiztidsinz, on 10/28/2008, -0/+9I think that spirit would be extra willing...
- nyx210, on 10/28/2008, -0/+9But, how in the hell did he manage to get caught by the cops?
- twiztidsinz, on 10/28/2008, -0/+8But the later sounds, to the layman, like he set up a lab, made some opium and then extracted Morphine to add to the beer. Which, as Violent said, is QUITE different than adding poppies to the beer during brewing.

- fuzzlepop, on 10/28/2008, -0/+6DRUGS FTW!!!
- wishninja, on 10/28/2008, -0/+6I was thinking:
1. The cops have set up shop on the ebay dried poppy market and the narco's handed the case to the local pigs.
2. The guy was shooting off at the mouth and one of his o-cem stiff buddies ratted him out
3. The feds spotted the poppies in the mail and were like WTF a box full of poppies. Lets see where this goes.
I am split between 1 and 2. One cop said there was a confidential informant. Which is what they would need for the warrant anyway. But I was reading a story about similar busts going on about 5 months back. So maybe DEA have been sitting up on ebay.

Original article [which seems to be a 404 at this point, above is a blog with the article broken down] explains that police suspect morphine, but they haven't proved anything yet because they arrested him on suspicion. Technically speaking, he really wasn't doing anything illegal. Not growing poppies, more or less using them for flavor, though it's possible he might have extraced morphine from some of the pods. The police sound like they are more worried about heroine than morphine, though it's a tough call as they sound like they might want to make an example of this guy. - metateck, on 10/28/2008, -0/+6Whole coke bottle?
- Jektal, on 10/28/2008, -0/+6Agreed degree. Had he been selling the beer to others, or giving it to them without their knowledge of it's contents, that'd be different. But if he was drinking it himself, or giving it away freely to others who knew it's contents, then who cares?
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -6/+11His name for the beer... Coors Right!
- paperclipsNsoup, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5Where can I get a 6 pack... make it a keg

- dafragsta, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5Some day there'll be a cure for pain...
but until then, always mix Morphine with your beer. - twiztidsinz, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5Will you then accidentally/intentionally the whole thing?
- hoisonsauce, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4I totally for six pack of that.
- wissler, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4You do know that many of the chemicals we could get 20 years ago we can't get anymore. It's nearly impossible to have chemistry as a hobby anymore. Yet another way the drug war is dragging American back to the Dark Ages.
- drawkward84, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4It'll get you drunk!
- FLarsen, on 10/28/2008, -1/+5Simply put: End the war on drugs!
There's no reason to be a hypocrite (reference to Violent). - wissler, on 10/28/2008, -1/+5That people don't view it as pure insanity to harass some poor bloke who decides to take some seeds that have been growing on planet Earth for countless years and mix it in with some brew he wants to drink really shows you how low mankind has sunk into the cannibalistic tarpit of collectivism.
