Have any of you been to Europe? Girls under the age of 9 or so don't wear bikini tops at all, just the bottoms, and kids of both sexes under 4 or so often swim naked (i should know, i was one of those naked kids back in the day).

At least in the case of public swimming areas: watertight swim diapers are a godsend. I would hate to be swimming at the same public pool that allowed naked kids to swim. The whole concept of marketing kid's clothes in older, more suggestive styles is controversial because it declares that these kids need to be more suggestively dressed, in the fashion sense. They are two entirely differing moral dilemmas.

Seriously all this means is that a string bikini is considered a completely normal thing to wear to the beach. This isn't the 50's or something.

If a girl is only 12 months, that is barely considered a toddler, as 18 months is usually the cutoff from baby to toddler. Even around 24 months, it is fairly common to let your baby girl swim or enjoy the shore with just a diaper on. I watch a 14 month old, and if I saw that she owned this, I wouldn't think "what a little skank!" I'd think she got a cute new suit at Target, and its more than wearing nothing.
