- SqueakyWheel, on 10/12/2007, -11/+72Why don't they ever arrest the rappers who claim they sold drugs their whole life?
- RogerRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+59the authorities then proceeded to incinerate all 2,000 plants at an undisclosed location...
a statement will be made after a donut run - positron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38The war on (some) drugs is a war on people.
End the war on (some) drugs! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35"Open your minds, losers. Pop music sucks no matter what flavor. Most music on MTV/radio is *****, but rap music as a genre is every bit as legitimate as rock and roll. People were saying the same thing about Elvis and Chuck Berry 50 years ago."
There's music on MTV? Since when? - cogen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Check out the google ad in the upper right corner...
"Cost effective hydroponic grow systems starting at $34.95!"
Damn, contextual advertising is funny sometimes... - 4to15characters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27they need to keep scapegoating on movies, music, games, internet, etc. because they know it gets uppity people to do focus on that and keep their minds off the real issue, so no problems get solved and we get a bunch of angry housewives.
i too dislike media spin - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Actually I got the message that the Sherrif thinks it would be a good idea for kids to stop being narcs and ratting out their family for doing illegal things.
- themcman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28The story said that the girl wasn't secretive about it at all. If the parents were checking out what she was doing online, the only thing they would have done would be keeping her from getting caught.
The girl didn't start smoking because of the internet. I hate the way this story seems to tell parents to monitor their children's activities to keep them from getting into that kind of trouble. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30in other news, ACTUAL crime happened while the police dealt with this
- cultofmetatron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25man, I can't believe you got -11 diggs, I've done my research on the plant itself (did a thesis on it back when I was doing biochemistry as my major) and your points are spot on, Additionally, its been found that synthetically derived cannabinoids actually INCREASE spontaneous generation of new neurons and a 20 yr study that was released a lil while ago showed that cancer and pot smoking could not be correlated and that smokers who smoke both tobacco and pot were LESS LIKELY to develop cancer than those who smoke just tobacco,
I already know you'll all prolly digg me down, but I only wish to spread the truth - scrubadub, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Because there's no evidence, and I doubt there is any "clear and present danger"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_and_present_danger - olegk, on 10/12/2007, -11/+32They should get arrested for "music" they make.
- grrreat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Because alot of them are either grrreat at ***** (to make it seem like their are thugs) or have just done so little that's its just not worth for the police to go after them...
- ryno35, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Let's call it what it is - prohibition. It didn't work in the 30's and it still doesn't work. People need to take responsibility for what they put in their bodies. Prohibition creates crime and any benefit is far outweighed by the consequences.
A good solution to this countries drug problems, the biggest of which is alcohol, is to look at the tactics used in the "fight" against tobacco.
Let's stop the madness. - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Sheriff's departments are generally county agencies, and police dept's are generally town cops.
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13You miss the point. He's saying that the war on drugs is selective, and it is. Yeah, theres a "war" on marijuana or hard drugs such as cocaine/heroin/ecstasy/etc, but not on drugs like vicodin, oxyconton, etc.
It's really stupid, they make examples out of a vast minority of cases involving drugs to scare people. Now, I don't support drugs of any kind unless they have a legitimate medicinal purpose (which some of these drugs have, in some cases -- cancer, etc), but that's just what I think about the "war". - theoallardyce, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Wow thats incredible police work there, dedication and commitment, they managed to shut that pot growing ***** down and make sure this bitch wont be able to harm any more lives.
Oh wait, yes I forgot, in the real world there are actually real criminals raping, stealing, shooting, perhaps these cops should get off their fat lazy ***** asses and catch some of these people maybe? oh no that would be diverting police resources into something important!! - cogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Wait a second... From TFA:
"Following the incident, Anderson urged parents to be diligent in monitoring the online activities of their children."
What does that even have to do with this story? The pot was found because the parents *weren't* monitoring their child's activities. - r0ck3tm4nn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Hey guess what? ANYONE can view your stupid ass website. WTF were you thinking?! The person that complains about being stalked even though they put their cell phone, AIM SN, address, daily schedule, and a list of their fears on their myspace site, gets NO sympathy from me.
- deadite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11If you read your history, the government made marijuana illegal mainly because of prejudice against influx of mexican and black users in the country. It made the crabby white people nervous and then ended up becoming illegal.
Here's some quotes from Harry Aslinger, appointed head of the newly formed Federal Bureau of Narcotics (1930):
"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others."
"Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men."
"...the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races."
Now, tell me the reasons they outlawed marijuana were based on our government's concern about our well being... c'mon people... stop being ignorant about pot. - meadot01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"in fact it seemed to suggest that parents monitor their children's online activities to see if they talk about any illegal activities they do offline."
You need to monitor your child's online activities to see if they are growing 2000 pot plants on your property? - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Why some? Drugs don't use drugs, people use drugs. End the war on ALL drugs!
- BrokenImage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That's what I was thinking.
It's like warning the parents to makes sure to monitor their kids so the family secrets don't get out. - Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm sure there are at least 1,000 6-8 inch clones in the store up the street from me... Why is this such a big deal?
- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I guess if I was growing 2,000 plants - I might be a little more secretive about it...
- saralk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It didn't really suggest that, in fact it seemed to suggest that parents monitor their children's online activities to see if they talk about any illegal activities they do offline.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10If I was growing 2000 plants I'd buy my kid a bong, not a webcam.
- vdubski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Alot of rappers say they sold drugs their whole lives. But how many of them are still doing it after they became a successfull rapper? None, I would guess.
- FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8here's an idea: how about raising kids who are smart enough to NOT talk about it online!!!
(the pot isn't the problem, it's the idiots who beget idiots) - KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow, someone has been listening to a lot of miss-information.
I'd suggest reading some books, or even perhaps watch some TV.
There is a total of 0 recorded deaths caused by marijuana, the once that die while under the effects of marijuana are usually victims of car crashes, but that's the same as drinking and driving, a substance shoudn't be banned becuse of the possibility of it being used in the wrong way, alot of medication makes you unable to drive a car, they're legal.
I do oppose "heavy" drugs like meth, cocaine, etc. since they have recorded negative effects on the human body, marijuana doesn't.
The state even give "medical marijuana" to people in congress (people with cronic illness that cause pain. marijuana is light enough to releave pain while leaving em able to work without any issues while smoking it). (See the "*****" episode related to it)
When your major counter argument is based on lies, miss-information and downright spell-pecking (English isn't my native language, so f*** you) you just know you're ontop! - collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@brendanc
"Now, I don't support drugs of any kind unless they have a legitimate medicinal purpose"
Now I would be very surprised if you did not use any of the following, alcohol, tobbaco or caffiene. There are all psycoactive substances (drugs without a legitamate medical purpose) which are socially acceptable, as they are ingrained in our culture.
You are becoming as hypocritical as the politicains, but you without even realising it. - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@bloom.
Sorry, you don't know what you're talking about. the average pot plant does not yield a pound of weed. 2000 plants would be more like 250-300 lbs, if you're the best pot farmer in the world. Also, if you have 2000 plants, you're either in a warehouse or more likely growing outdoors, either way it would not be inside the average-size house. Major disrtibution crops are mostly from Canada and Mexico.
Law enforcement inflates the value of seizures to increase their publicity. If you could get 1.4 million from one crop, there'd be a lot more high-profile busts. Stop spreading bogus war on drugs propaganda please, thx - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Don't worry. They caught the kids playing in a tree. The worlds is safes for another days.
http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/08/01/2352220 - psyanyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8theblooms, your math is off on so many levels. In house with 2,000 plants, they're not all going to yeild a pound. They're probably on a staggered grow cycle so that some are ready to harvest, while others are a couple months behind, and still more are months behind those. On top of that, $700 a pound is a low figure for hydroponic (I'm assuming here because the upkeep to water and fertilize 2,000 plants would be very high)
- FyreGoddess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The article doesn't say if there were any arrests. With that much pot being grown, I find it really hard to believe that her parents weren't involved.
The unspoken moral of the story? "Parents, monitor your kids' online activities so they don't inadvertantly give you up..." - vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"To claim that weed has never killed anybody is ridiculous. "
To be fair, cell phones and CD players in cars have most likley caused more fatalities. Heck... Lack of sleep has killed more people driving than pot.
Then again eating McDonald's food too much also kills more people than pot with heart disease.
Anything in excess (including water and oxygen) can kill a human. Putting a person in a machine that is hurtling down a road a high speeds amplifies this problem.
So pot is as harmless as drinking, but I doubt any more so...
Heroine, crack, and meth on the other hand will ***** you up even if a car isn't involved. - NastyNate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They make less money from the rapists/murderers/thieves.
- dsendecki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"Anderson encouraged residents to familiarize themselves with social networking Web sites and to limit the amount of personal information listed on the sites..."
So please, all you parents who are running crack dens and meth labs take heed. Experts suggest using Net Nanny DT (Drug Trafficking)—a specialized and secure application by which to monitor the children of parents involved in the drug trade.
Searches for text strings like chiba, yayo, rock, dank, in IM and e-mail. Block search requests for terms like "hydroponics", "digital scale", etc. That's right—cehck out Net Nanny DT! - TexasCanuck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11We should all bow our heads in a moment of silence, to respect the loss of such a substantial quantity of bud.
i have felt a great disturbance in teh mellow... as if two thousand green-leafy-friends suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced... - tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7social networks bring out the dumbest people.
- brotheralien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5>>if we was the cops, we would of smoked it ;)
If you "was the cops", I'd question the entrance exam. - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5njbair:
maybe you could try to wrap your head around victimless crimes. freedom would ideally include me being able to do whatever i want so long as i don't infringe on other peoples freedom. why does the government care what goes into my body? not their problem not their choice. if an action is victimless i don't see how it can so irrationally be called a crime. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nothing much. A Sheriff is usually the title given to someone who is in charge of law enforcement for a whole county, while for a municipality like a town or city, it's usually a Chief of Police.
- dacyac, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Curious that this is in offbeat and not politics.
What comes to my mind is how much the"war on drugs" has cost in lost lives and wasted tax dollars over a "drug" that medical research has shown to be more beneficial and harmful.
Wonder how many convicted marijuana criminals have a felony rap and can not vote?
Wonder how many lived in Florida in 2000? - dmsean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I call it the war on soma drugs. It's only a war on drugs that make you think about your existence and question it.
- psyanyde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7boy scouts are so cute.
- Petarded, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I wonder how they "destroyed" all that weed.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8That's a pretty tactful misspelling actually.
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What's the difference between a Sheriff's department and a Police department?
- Character0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Cheneythedick and Shmatt are the only ones who have any idea what they are talking about when it comes to rap. There are so many great artist out there that speak about more than just drugs and money. What people fail to realize are that rap lyrics can be very meaningful, but most of them don't care to actually listen because they have created a stereotype for rappers. Some great rappers to listen to are Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Biggie, Mos Def, Common, Atmosphere
