- DangerCollie, on 12/27/2008, -10/+331You stay classy, UPS.
Goes right along with the video of the UPS driver throwing the package over the fence.
http://digg.com/people/How_UPS_Really_Delivers_You ... - EatingPie, on 12/28/2008, -19/+319My daughter was in day care (a montessori program) in 2001. The family running it was Indian, and I never thought twice about the turbans until after 9/11. A week after the attack, I told them that I lived down the street and if they had any trouble I could be there pretty quickly. Some Americans, I said, can be pretty hot-headed, after all.
They actually were surprised by my offer, and said everyone has been very nice. They never had any trouble whatsoever, and I only heard of one HIGHLY publicized incident regarding "Sihk Bashing" after 9/11, in a completely different state.
The media -- and I daresay Digg and the Internet at large -- paints in broad strokes. This is *fortunately* an exceptionally isolated incident, and the driver should be punished as such. But UPS itself, nor Americans at large should bear the burden of guilt here.
-Pie - sockpuppets, on 12/28/2008, -9/+253Maybe his name was Trot Riser and the driver was dyslexic.
- ninjatech123, on 12/29/2008, -0/+199I work at a computer shop, and one time the UPS guy signed "Bald Geek" for my bosses name.
- hark, on 12/28/2008, -8/+193Ugh, I remember many sikhs being targets of racism after 9/11 in the states. Some people are Ignorant pricks.
- mal1964, on 12/29/2008, -6/+175The UPS guy signed me as "Drunk" but I'm Irish so i had no leg to stand on for an argument.
- bainsingh, on 12/28/2008, -6/+168What can brown do for you?
- ihavetop, on 12/29/2008, -3/+144I am Sikh and I wish more people would take a class on world religions to actually understand fundamental beliefs of other religions outside their own. I make it a point to learn other religions/cultures even though I already come from a diverse background. Issues such as the article are not only rude but starting to become more common after 9/11. I get screened more often in airports, I am harassed by US immigration for visiting my family in foreign countries, and I try to remain as polite as possible without feeling offended.
I love being an American but having to deal with THESE issues of race (outside black and white) makes articles like this really get on my nerves. I am not only offended I am disgusted. I put 0% blame on UPS but 100% of it on individuals such as this UPS delivery person. - kismetropolis, on 12/28/2008, -1/+133That is an extremely generous rationalization. I admire your spirit of compassion.
- msaleem, on 12/27/2008, -6/+133Wow, this is pitiful.
- dext3r, on 12/29/2008, -0/+114An Irish pirate?
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -7/+114Agreed. Zero tolerance for racism.
- scallon, on 12/28/2008, -2/+72It is nice to see a beacon of rationality on here every once in a while. Everyone who is jumping on the "Down with UPS!" bandwagon needs to think more like you do.
- noahgelman, on 12/29/2008, -2/+64Maybe his name was Terry Wrist and the UPS guy got confused
- ihavetop, on 12/29/2008, -0/+59Taking a class is ridiculous? I know education can be brutal. You are the type of idiot that I encounter on a regular basis and the reason why people like this UPS employee exist. I was born in the states so I am "***** home". I prefer to be a bit more understanding instead of an ego-centric lunatic like yourself.
- dannyboy3020, on 12/29/2008, -1/+54On the other hand, my UPS driver is very nice and never mistreats my packages.
Your examples do not represent the actions of all UPS drivers. My example does not, either. - redfan, on 12/29/2008, -1/+53No doubt, there are people like this working for any large company.
UPS does, however, need to fire this guy immediately. - talonstriker, on 12/28/2008, -1/+43"Maybe there was something else about the Sikh man that was eventful, having nothing to do with his skin tone or last name."
Oh yes. The next time I find someone building a bomb, I will immediately hack into the UPS database and enter "Terrorist" in a package that the guy received. If you suspect someone of being a terrorist you report to the police...not UPS.
"Why? How do you know that it REALLY was this UPS driver and not a nerd with server access back at UPS headquarters? "
You do raise a good point here. In all likelihood the system would have logged enough information to definitively find who entered the data. - otbeverly, on 12/29/2008, -2/+44I'm not surprised. It seems the quality and competency of UPS drivers has fallen dramatically in recent years. Apparently the decline also includes morals and ethics.
Case in point -- Thursday, Christmas Eve. I had a package sent overnight as a gift for my sister and brother in law. I was going to be at work so I LEFT A NOTE PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED ON THE FRONT DOOR for the driver. It asked them to please leave the package if I wasn't home between the screen and door so it would less visible and, therefore, less likely to be stolen.
As it happened to be EXTREMELY RAINY in the southeast that day, it also would have protected the package. I came home from work to find the package sitting propped up against the front part of the porch where it was most exposed to anyone who might wish to take it for themselves as well as the elements. Needless to say the box was soaked, but fortunately the item of concern was inside another cardboard box that sustained little water damage (yes, it was an electronic device, too).
I expect this from carriers like DHL, but not UPS. - cathpah, on 12/29/2008, -0/+36@ nj10ii
you are an idiot. Sounds like you need to take a class in ANYTHING that might help you be a little more educated and less of a bigot/xenophobe.
This country could benefit a LOT if people were more educated about other cultures/religions/ideas from the rest of the world. Our close-mindedness and lack of an understanding about people different than us is a key to our unsuccessful/confused foreign policy. - Tarotsan, on 12/28/2008, -2/+37They were caught out this time by the chance event of a second parcel not being sent. How many times does this sort of thing happen that aren't even discovered?
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -5/+39I like your comments, Pie. This one especially.
- Cheezeburgar, on 12/29/2008, -1/+35@ nj10ii
Understand us? Who do you exactly mean by us? - digjam, on 12/29/2008, -3/+35Welcome to REAL AMERICA!
- pintomp3, on 12/29/2008, -1/+32not just targets, many were killed. some even tried to blow up mosques:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sns-worldtrade ... - zdiggler, on 12/29/2008, -1/+31My Arab friend like to fly, When people are seating.. he will call his cousins and relatives and speak Arabic really loud. Whole plane quiet and scared.
- techguru2006, on 12/28/2008, -2/+30Keep it classy, UPS drivers. Maybe that's his way of getting back at the man for having to wear short shorts.
- brownsound00, on 12/29/2008, -2/+30I am sikh, and i was a target of racism.
it sucked. - thetruthis, on 12/29/2008, -8/+35Did you really just end your post with your ***** handle? WHY?!??
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -2/+27If you're going to act high and mighty for being an Atheist, try to use 'your' and 'you're' properly.
- gumhucker, on 12/29/2008, -0/+25Took place in Bakersfield. not surprised
- xero69, on 12/29/2008, -2/+27It's just UPS maintaining their "brown standard" when it comes to treatment of the customer.
- Fihiro, on 12/28/2008, -3/+26The kid was in idiot, plain and simple.
And you're an idiot for labeling an entire group of religious followers, 'terrorists', for that one idiots choice. - bludhound, on 12/29/2008, -1/+24So I guess 'What can brown do for you?' does not apply to BROWN people.
- enantiodromia, on 12/29/2008, -1/+23if you worked at UPS, you would know that you must work there for FIVE years before becoming a driver, and that the Driver position is coveted due to the very nice salary they get.
you would also know that UPS employees are in the Teamster's Union, and are not "holiday temps".
/worked at UPS - Claw787, on 12/29/2008, -4/+26@ nj10ii
You are one of those fat-assed, stupid Americans. You're the reason why 9/11 happened.
What do you mean by "Go ***** home"?. He's American and he is in his home. Deal with it you idiot. - cathpah, on 12/29/2008, -0/+22Singh is King!
- Nboy514, on 12/29/2008, -2/+22That's a logical fallacy Jimmy. By proposing that claim you now have the burden of proof.
- XenoSNK, on 12/29/2008, -1/+20It's hard to find a leg to stand on when you're drunk.
- Tiak, on 12/29/2008, -6/+24Technically speaking, it isn't racism to discriminate based upon religion or the fashion choices made by individuals of a given religion.
...Just sayin' - CATSCEO2, on 12/29/2008, -1/+19Jimmy is a professional troll guys. He should have been banned a year ago, why Digg hasn't is a mystery to me...
- Fordi, on 12/29/2008, -0/+18"I don't support racial profiling, of course, but if you need to be frightened of anyone, you have good reason to be alarmed at the angry guy shouting in arabic."
I'd just generally be alarmed at the angry guy shouting - in any language. Even French can be made to sound threatening if said in the right tone of voice. - tpar, on 12/29/2008, -0/+17Shipment had 2 packages. he got one but the other one was missing which is why he looked up tracking details.
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -1/+18It amazes me how there is never a shortage of dirt stupid.
Cousin of head-up-the-ass stupid and rock bottom dumb. - timusca, on 12/29/2008, -2/+18You must be new here. Pie always does that, but we let him get away with it because he makes sense.
- BoneStamp, on 12/28/2008, -7/+23They've really outdone themselves. I never thought UPS could do anything more offensive than their ridiculously high brokerage fees.
- DragonForce4, on 12/29/2008, -6/+22you had me till the -Pie part
- GSR1984, on 12/29/2008, -0/+15Being a Sikh man who has a Turban and Beard, I don't find this story shocking at all.
American Sikhs have and will continue to face racism on a regular basis. I've heard many horrific stories from friends and family, including one case were a Sikh man was shot to death after 9/11, the shooter thought he was a Muslim.
I'm glad I live in Canada. These sort of stories are far less common here, as we're more tolerant and multicultural.
I also travel to the States regularly, and let me tell you there's a huge difference between the 2 countries, I never quite feel comfortable until I cross the border back into Canada. - inactive, on 12/28/2008, -0/+15Douche.
