Sick Of Waiting, 75-Year-Old Woman Smashes Up Comcast Office With A Hammer
consumerist.com — Have I got your attention now?" asked Mona Shaw of the Comcast payment center employees as she smashed their keyboard, monitor and telephone. The 75-year-old woman was outraged after multiple delays and broken promises surrounding her Comcast Triple Play installation.

- crazydiode, on 10/11/2007, -4/+63AWESOME !!! I will be back.. going to Cox office now...
- OverThere, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16I've got Verizon now, but till have ill will towards them. Can you do some extra smashing for me?
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36Honestly every time I talk to 'support' personnel, I feel more and more like she was justified. I've run across too many people who are so stupid, lazy or just uninterested that I'm all for whatever it takes to get their attention. If you're going to charge me for a service then you WILL listen when I have a gripe. Good for her.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Anger Management? Please. I live in India and the stories I hear about Comcast are as bad as the ones I've had to go through myself. Sorry, but it may not have been lawful, but I see it as right.

You've obviously never been a Comcast customer before... - RealmDown, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23Can you fear me now?
- kungfoolou, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Yes, probably never dealt with Comcast. At least, I now know for sure it's not just me.
- humperdeath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I had to deal with Comcrap a while back. It was on the day I was cancelling the service. They wanted the equipment back, and I wanted my deposit. They knew they lost me as a customer so they made me wait so long. I was furious, but didn't happen to bring my hammer. Next time, maybe I will.
- MxM111, on 10/10/2007, -13/+8You know, HONESTLY, from my experience with Dells, ATTs, MCIs, Verizons and all other big guys, Comcast is simply THE BEST in customer service, at least here in NJ. I had never EVER put on hold, and I did called them lots of times (I had technical problems with HDTV and couple times with internet outages). So, as horrible as the story goes, my personal experience shows otherwise. Though, of cause, any company sometimes screw things up from time to time...
- stahlight, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I can smell the astro-turf from here...
- mrurc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yeah right. When you call customer service you immediately get connected to an operator and do not have to wait on hold with everyone else? You are either an employee calling a direct line or you are the Governor and they patch you directly through to a manager. That or you are confused about what hold is.
It doesn't matter how atrocious the customer service is elsewhere; Comcast customer service is still ridiculous. It's not just customer service though; service provided by the techs is insane too. They require that you stay home all day for them and then they don't show up. It irritates me and I don't have to take off work to stay home and wait for them.
It took me days and many phone calls in order to get someone to come out to check my service, which was completely out, and then it turned out that the time that I told them that my cable went out was the exact time that they disconnected my neighbors cable, by disconnecting cable to THE BUILDING. Customer service could not even tell that there was a service guy at my house at the time that my cable went out. It took days to get them to come over and disconnect the cable after the splitter instead of before. - takeda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2MCI? Back when the UU.NET existed, I think that was the best ISP I ever had... not a single outage... for two or 3 years (I don't remember exactly). Once Verizon bought them, they demanded higher prices, so my ISP (actually a reseller) changed to Covad...
I got 5 static IPs and one year of free increase of bandwidth as a recompensate, but I lost track of how many times my link was down...
Maybe MCI's help desk sucked, but their service was so good, that I didn't need to use customer service a single time...

- RockMyMonkey, on 11/01/2007, -3/+294Sure it freaked out some innocent employees, but it was also bad publicity for Comcrash. That is something they just might pay attention to.
- BRODEL, on 10/19/2007, -1/+82Doubtful.. they've been getting bad publicity for some time now. They still continue to screw over their customers.
- Shigglyboo, on 10/19/2007, -6/+28their employees are not innocent. the two seemingly nice ladies at the Comcast office I went to refused to even look at my documentation on the deal that they were NOT giving me. they very rudely told me and my room mate to leave. Comcast told me to take up my issues with "comcast offers", the 3rd party company with no contact info.
- sexybobo, on 10/10/2007, -21/+5So a third party gave you an offer for Comcast how is that comcast fault that they didn't honor it. That would be like me handing out coupons for $100 off xbox 360 at walmart then you getting mad walmart wouldn't honor it.
It might have been their fault the people were rude but i am willing to bet you were also being rude.- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31You don't seem to understand that Comcast allows this third party to do business under their name.

- TjLAXattack, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Innocent yes, decent - probably not.
- troye, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3We are ranting about how bad Comcast is. When you go against the mob, you get ran over. Thus, you are being dugg down at a steep rate.

- oneoverzero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2HILARIOUS!
- frazw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I totally have to agree that the employees were innocent. It's a shame for the employees because they are usually strictly bound by the policies of the company set by managers who never have to deal with the public. Is it then wrong of them to worry that straying from the guidelines might cost them their job? All companies have procedure to follow and employees are bound by it.
Having worked in the service industry or more specifically the retail industry I can tell you that if you are going to complain do it nicely if possible and in person if possible because the person you are complaining to it a person just like you and they will be more willing to help nice people than rude arrogant arseholes. You can agree or disagree but unless you've been on the other side you'll have no appreciation for the difference.- jim45804, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Employees are not innocent because employees represent the company that hired them. Passing blame is why customer service is so shoddy: employees feel unaccountable for bad policies. Its time to hold employees accountable for executing the bad policies of their superiors.
- dragon76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's sad people are digging you down. There is no legal defence "I was just following orders."
- frazw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All I'm saying is put yourself in the employees shoes. There is no vindictiveness in their actions I'm sure they would have sympathised and been frustrated that they couldn't do anything had the crazy bitch not come in like a psycho.

- Shigglyboo, on 11/01/2007, -3/+187This woman is my hero! They screwed me big time (still owe me $300 is service discounts and rebate), I had all the documentation to prove it. I've been paying $57.99 from the first month, no $29.99 for 6 months, no $100 rebate on my modem... They told me to "take my stuff and leave". Be careful if you sign up for Comcast through Comcast Offers, because they are not the same company and Comcast does not have to honor the deal that Comcast Offers sells you, although they admit to allowing the "3rd party" to use their logo.
- listrophy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Start going to your local cable board meetings. They should be open to the public. Be quiet at the first meeting, just to get a feel for what goes on. - metacarter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Verizon's the same. Advertised price is $99.99/month for 'triple freedom,' but I've never seen that, even after 3 months and numerous calls. Last bill was $200, had to call in again to get it reduced. These offers are bait-and-switch, which is ILLEGAL. And their dish contractors are morons, drilled holes all over my landlord's ceiling to get the cable into our apt. Also, yeah, Verizon Offers are not Verizon, but some incompetent corrupt jerks called WhiteFence who broker 'better' deals for you. Avoid them like the plague. They're just a rip-off.

- aloomba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2@Shigglyboo
Actually comcastoffers can work out great, but it takes a lot of effort. I've done it several times over the years (or similar deals) and you just have to make sure to MONITOR things, even after you're all setup with your Internet and Cable. You need to check status on rebates (they had an easy system to do it online) and also review your bill each month. If you call Comcast directly within the first month they will certainly CORRECT the billing error (and there always is one).
Bottom line: Don't let them overcharge you for 6 months before you complain. It takes work to be cheap.- hansk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it shouldnt though. they offer these deals it's their responsibility to keep their word.
- wbeavis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Caviet Emptor. You sign up with a 3rd party and expect them to pay you a rebate? If you want your rebate, you are barking up the wrong tree. They are under no obligation to assist you.
- INHUMANITY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's funny you mention these weird offers. I don't know if you guys have these twerps in your area, but it's common for guys to hang out at outside gas stations, 7-11's, supermarkets, etc and say "Hey, wanna save some money on your cable bill?"
Comcast ID on their neck lanyards and all. Freaky and extremly annoying.

- rancemo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The market only fails when government gets involved...
- WillHutch5, on 10/18/2007, -14/+4Don't be stupid. Natural monopolies in utility markets are the most efficient. Can you imagine 25 cable companies all running their own wires to households? Incredibly inefficient. As long as natural monopolies are regulated to run at what would otherwise be competitive prices, the end consumer is better off.
- crawf061, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12So basically as long as you can afford to run the first wires then you should be allowed to charge ridiculous prices forever? Also, how many cable companies do you see upgrading their services to offer fiber to the premises?
- Harq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Each company does not run their own cables... They can usually rent or buy time, or they CAN run their own cables, but that is not always the best option.

- bearda, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10She needs to go through Campus Life, or whoever handles other maintenance issues in her dorm. She needs to complain to whoever she's paying direcly for service, and in most cases that isn't Comcast, it's the college.
- leerayIG88, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Or...if she owns a cell phone, use her cell as the home phone number.
- bingobongony, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2So, your friend is a ***** idiot and that is Comcast's fault? Seriously...she has to be a complete ***** moron to have problem with the cable in her dorm and think that she has to call the cable company directly.
- corranhorn85, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1The reason you have to put in your phone number is because that's how the call gets routed to the correct call center that handles your area. All you have to do is put in a local number and it should send you to the corect place. Some departments will pull up the phone number that you put in(billing) but they should verify that as soon as they pick up and you can then give them the right information for the account. If you can't identify the account though you won't get much help.
- Cabal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually they ask for your phone number after you're talking to some person, the reason is so they can look up your information.

- xXRobbyXx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11She's my Hero!!!
- Defuser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28Good for her. Most of these companies have a "***** you, we get paid by Corporate no matter how we treat you" attitude towards their customers. Since the local employees have absolutely NO incentive to provide good service, most of them are the laziest, most arrogant, dismissive assholes you'll ever meet in your life.
- 2oonhed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The REAL problem? Every employee is under pressure to reduce handle time. weather it's on the phone OR in person. And that goes especially to subcontractors that handle inbound service calls. The first and foremost message these employees hear from their management is : "REDUCE AVERAGE HANDLE TIME!" I personally have been a CSR for 8 months now. Not one time have I ever been told to "Improve customer care" or "carefully address all issues". Those things would INCREASE AHT, not lower. Using 3rd party call centers helps a company isolate itself from liability, responsibility, and, essentially shields itself from contact with those oh so annoying customers who want to complain about getting screwed.

- hockey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22There is a distinct difference in beating up a keyboard with a hammer vs killing someone.
One is awesome the other not so much. - toxicshok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If she had shot someone, comcast wouldn't have come out to set her up.
- trevorjez, on 10/11/2007, -1/+57you know, the elderly, although slow, and dangerous behind the wheel, can serve a purpose. don't you go dying on me now.
- cderry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I got robbed by a nice old lady in a motorized cart. And I didn't even see it coming!
- hansk, on 10/25/2007, -1/+1hand over the cash sonny or else ill cane whip your ass back to the 1980s
- cderry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I got robbed by a nice old lady in a motorized cart. And I didn't even see it coming!
- ronaldst, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16She's got more balls than most of us combined.
- fani, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Unfortunately, in my area - its either Comcast or Verizon. Verizon and Comcast both suck...
In my opinion, comcast sucks less. At least their triple play pkg I have works fine for my needs. - bsolidgold, on 10/11/2007, -6/+40Can we institute an age limit of at least 16 to register for this site?
Please?- p0tent1al, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2Why you want to make it so you can't register?
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10It should be 25, or else just some written intelligence tests to see if you qualify.
- gamer31, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Oh yeah, the good old dropdown enter your age boxes. That'll keep all those little kids out, just like it keeps them out of all those porn sites.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -22/+9One - You depend on phone service for emergency medical help? You don't want VoIP from ANYONE. You want a land line.
Two - WTF? Lady walks into a place of business wielding a deadly weapon, proceeds to use said weapon to cause felony (I'm guessing it was over $500) damage to the business' property, and the full article (clickthrough to it) spends 90% of its time talking about Comcast service?
If it was a gas station, she'd be getting called crazy. If it was a bank, she'd have had guns drawn on her, and possibly been shot. But since it's a cable company, somehow it's a human interest story on the side of the criminal - yes, criminal - replete with a picture of her smiling smugly?
*****. I don't care how bad a company's service is, no one has the right to walk into one of their offices and start smashing things with a hammer. People who do that are criminally liable, and should not be praised for their actions.- madm0nk, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20That's right ... when the company ***** you over time and time again, and never responds to normal requests for assistance, you should just bow to your corporate masters and crack open the vaseline. We should never ever give someone praise for standing up for themselves.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -12/+3I never said anything about "bowing to corporate masters," you twit. People who go into businesses with hammers and start smashing things are not standing up for themselves, they're having tantrums. Dangerous ones. When my four year old starts smashing his blocks on my computer keyboard because he feels I should be paying more attention to him, he goes in time out. He doesn't get a ***** cookie.
And for those of you who are about to comment that "I should spend more time with my kids, then" -- you don't have any, STFU. Preschool kids have an insatiable appetite for attention. When you have kids, you come back and talk to me about it.- andshewas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5*****.
- FLLawLibrarian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You sir, also appear to have an anger management issue. There really is no reason to start the name calling. She has the right to her opinion, as you have to yours. What she did was rash and she could be criminally liable for it, yes. However, I can understand where the frustration comes from and I am sure I have wanted to do the same many times.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1You said crack in reference to vaseline.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -12/+3I never said anything about "bowing to corporate masters," you twit. - barrybevel, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6I dont understand or agree with you. I think she is great for doing what we all want to do but just dont have the nuts.
- Sikarian, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7Definitely. Just because you are not happy with someone, it does not give you the right to go destroy their stuff and threaten them. I don't like my neighbors. They play loud music till the wee hours of the morning. Does that mean I go with a hammer and destroy their stereo? No. I take the MATURE route, I contact the proper chain of getting ***** the ***** done. I call the land lord, the police, etc.
What this lady SHOULD have done was contact a consumer reporting agency. The Better Business Bureau, the stores god damned management. Jesus christ, you're 75, act like it.- madm0nk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Uh .... your neighbors playing loud music effects you financially in what way? The older you get the less tolerance you have for stupidity, and at 75 you don't really have the time to deal with the BBB, and I am sure that her and many others have contacted management about this. The point is Comcast does not give a flying ***** about customer service. Sometime people just need a wake up call. You are acting like she hit a person with the damn thing.
- Sikarian, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5So because she's having issues getting service going and is out some cash on it, it's perfectly acceptable to go demolish property of someone elses.
Are we back to an eye for an eye now or something? I thought we had "laws" in this country. - Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3"The older you get the less tolerance you have for stupidity, ..."
Correct. She was stupid. I have no tolerance for that.
"Oh officer, I was just standing up for myself, here at the grocery store, by smashing the cash register with a hammer. See, I didn't have time to wait for the price check on the case of PBR, and they have to do it every time I come in here. They were mean to me, too, like always. Also, I'm old." - morlaath138, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4@nougat .... ok fine just obey your government, and your laws, regardless of the circumstances. Do what you are told at all times. Everything always has a peaceful solution. Never ever take extreme measures for any reason what so ever. Do not show signs of anger. Do not take matters into your own hands, we have people chosen to perform those actions in a 'responsible' manner .... even when those people cannot or will not do anything to solve your problems. Just get behind the person in front of you and follow. Do not ask questions. And finally do not question authority. In other words act like a lifeless robot.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1morlaath138 -- we're talking about a cable company here, not the German SS circa 1938. And you're talking about her actions as though it was an act of civil disobedience. It was not; it was a tantrum.
- Sikarian, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5So because she's having issues getting service going and is out some cash on it, it's perfectly acceptable to go demolish property of someone elses.

- satanatnmtedu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2She was arrested, and the company apologized. You are freaking out over nothing.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'm not freaking out, I'm commenting about how the full article presented the story.
- washburn085, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3though I despise comcast, you are 100% correct.
- Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Here's the difference...
If it's a noisy neighbor, if you call the cops, the cops will show.
If its a local gas station, you can speak to the manager and they'll do something.
Comcast? Talk to a manager? This woman couldn't talk to anyone. Plus, with Comcast being as huge as it is, the BBB can't really do anything to rectify her problem. She just had enough of their *****. - tkidBOSTON, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0You must have DirecTV
- madm0nk, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20That's right ... when the company ***** you over time and time again, and never responds to normal requests for assistance, you should just bow to your corporate masters and crack open the vaseline. - darkstar07, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5We need to send this lady into the Microsoft Xbox Call Center next so she can knock some sense into them.
- Eupatorus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18***** Comcast! I moved to a new home a couple of months ago, and it took two incompetent Comcrash employees over 3 hours just to install my internet. They even ran a new cable line to the house (which is still laying across the neighbor's yard and mine, since they failed to bury the new line) and then once they finally got it running, one of the employees basically blamed me, stating that my "security settings were too high". WTF! I would have installed the net myself if I hadn't already paid for the mandatory "home installation". ***** YOU, COMCAST! I hope this lady comes back and burns corporate offices to the ground!
- Eupatorus, on 11/09/2007, -0/+111/08/07, Called about the cable weeks ago. Was told someone would be out the next day. It's still there. Not paying my bills till it's buried. Net still works though, obviously.
- surfacewound, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10"But Shaw had enough, she's switching back to Verizon."
Verizon better refuse to accept her as a customer unless they like slashed tires. - ronaldinho, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3This is not a woman to mess with. Then again, she's 75, she has nothing to lose.
Although I still think Comcast can still screw us however they want. In my area only Comcast provides good cable+internet, so I'm practically stuck. I desperately wish for RCN to magically be in my area, or some other vendors as long as I don't have to choose Comcast - sugartish, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6 "What the hell, I'm 75"
lol love it! - scotty1024, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I've been waiting for an install date for my Comcast Triple Play Deal since Feb 12, 2007.
Monopolies, sigh. - Vannion, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9so 3 installers, 3 drop and bury crews, one line that toned fine but they replaced anyone, one technician who told me she didn't have time for this install, and someone would be out that day, but hen called it in as a bad drop and bury. 4 weeks, and still no cable..... when are we going to get some real competition into this market? the service level of all the major vendors is horrid, comcast, Att and why rely on the weather with dish....
- joebrender, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I've wanted to do that to a comcast office since I was 18. Good job grandma!
The comcast office in Vegas has armed guards and bulletproof glass, so I guess their ***** customer service is a nationwide-thing. The best is when they bill you for services you haven't yet recieved.- lambdacris, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3That's awesome seeing how Comcast doesn't exist in vegas...
- rgaino, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Just to share a different opinion, I moved recently to the US, I signed for Triple Play and when I was over the phone the guy actually told me that if I signed over the website I would get a Nintendo DS for free. I did it, they installed the service on time, although the phone came a couple of days later, and my DS came a few weeks later (like they said it would). So far, everything works just fine.
- derek20cali, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Give it time.
- kungfoolou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah wait till there is some accounting, scheduling or hardware issue.
- dorkino, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14"But Shaw had enough, she's switching back to Verizon."
WATCH OUT, VERIZON!! - crushtheenemy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2OG!!!
- jakdracula, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Comcast sucks. Stay FAR away from them. Comcast is building their tombstone in Philadelphia right now.
http://phillyskyline.com/bldgs/comcast/index.htm - dowserdave, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Next, she should turn her attention to the illegal alien problem.
