- typicalusername, on 11/30/2007, -4/+516It's too bad that his insurance company will probably drop him like a rock for purposefully causing an accident....
- LucasKane, on 11/30/2007, -3/+226This guy should be on that CNN heroes thingy
- Actionjax1, on 11/30/2007, -5/+214That was one hell of a ballsy move.
- Pilot85, on 11/30/2007, -4/+201no good deed goes unpunished...
- flxfxp, on 11/30/2007, -14/+201Wow, first time a big vehicle has been handy in traffic, kudos to that man!
- Grimdotdotdot, on 11/30/2007, -2/+138The real question is: Why isn't there any fencing between the carriageways on the Golden Gate Bridge?
- tamacurtis, on 11/30/2007, -3/+102I wish I could digg this twice. We need to hear more of the good things people do in this world than the bad. Take that CNN.
- Pilot85, on 11/30/2007, -0/+58RIP for the lady driving the jeep. :(
- georgemason01, on 11/30/2007, -1/+59If he tells me who his insurance provider is I'll be happy to give them a call and let them know what I think.
- NuclearBunny, on 11/30/2007, -0/+57because they scare the horses
They sometimes change the configuration of the lanes. based on traffic patterns, i.e. more cars going north vs. south - apec766, on 11/30/2007, -1/+54It's better that she was the only one who died (which, as it seems, was going to happen regardless). The guy prevented a massive pileup that likely would've cost far more lives.
- AnimalTaglits, on 11/30/2007, -0/+40What is Batman doing in San Francisco?
- bendiggn, on 11/30/2007, -0/+38...and now for something completely different.
- zengonzo, on 11/30/2007, -2/+39He said 'in traffic' not 'in mountain'.
- Mike89, on 11/30/2007, -6/+40They will, and we won't do *****.
- ahecht, on 11/30/2007, -0/+33That's a good question. They currently use cones because they adjust the number of lanes in each direction based on traffic flow (so morning rush hour will have 8 lanes one way and 4 the other, and evening rush hour will have the opposite). However, other bridges like the Tappan-Zee in NY and the Coranado in San Diego, CA use a moveable concrete barrier that is shifted to adjust for rush hour using a Zipper Machine such as this one:
http://www.roadstothefuture.com/Zipper_I95_JRB.htm ...
In the case of the Coranado bridge, they were having frequent crossover accidents before they installed the system, and they have been completely eliminated since. - fordfox, on 11/30/2007, -7/+40"Unfortunately, there is a sad ending to this story, as the unconscious driver of the Jeep eventually died at the hospital."
I want to know what the hell happened to the Jeep driver... ?? - riyehn, on 11/30/2007, -3/+30How about that NBC Heroes thingy?
- kimmer1, on 11/30/2007, -0/+27They were able to get him on NPR the other day and it was even more amazing to hear him tell the story.
bendiggn-- he said there was absolutely no damage to his truck because it was such a low impact collision and the only damage to the woman's car was that her license plate fell off.
So sad the woman died but at least he was there to give her a chance.
I wish there were more new stories like this - aceslick911, on 11/30/2007, -4/+31shoo back to ur irc channel
- blackbeardtron, on 11/30/2007, -0/+25They would change it from an F-350 to some Nissan truck.
- frostbyt, on 11/30/2007, -7/+31Insurance company: Good job! Your rates are now double
Him: Next time I will let things happen - MCMLXXXII, on 11/30/2007, -0/+23Insurance Company: You are on the way to destruction.
him: What you say?
Insurance Company: You have no chance to survive make your time. Ha ha ha... - MCMLXXXII, on 11/30/2007, -0/+21No. Saloon is a Sedan. Station Wagons are called Estates there.
- bcat, on 11/30/2007, -3/+22I can't believe you're getting dugg down. I certainly applaud the man in the SUV's actions, which probably prevented a multi-car pileup, but I'm really curious about the person driving the Jeep.
- mypreciousss, on 11/30/2007, -0/+17Yep.. they have reversible lanes on these highly used bridges and tunnels to accommodate increased traffic in a particular direction during rush hour.
- Haecceity, on 11/30/2007, -0/+17I think most sane people recognize that big vehicles can be useful and in fact are indispensable in some situations. But then you have massive SUVs that never go off road or even out of the city, clog up the roads, roll over at the drop of a hat, crush smaller vehicles, clog city streets, and are driven by egomaniacs who think they own the road and are invincible. Those tend to piss some of us off. But in the mountains? Hey, a big vehicle is often very appropriate. And thanks for towing that car.
- detrate, on 11/30/2007, -3/+18Damn, that guys a hero. Glad I'm not reading about something like this - http://www.xepic.com/view/1264/Highway_Pileup.jpeg - on the golden gate bridge
- zengonzo, on 11/30/2007, -3/+17Does driving a tow truck make you so grumpy, or is it the dreaded mountain traffic?
- jackspade, on 11/30/2007, -0/+14I'd like to think I'd do the same thing but I probably wouldn't. I'm a loser.
- snapcase, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13But on the flip side, showing nothing but bad news that showcases the darkest sides of humanity fosters a pessimistic outlook in those who watch and read it. If people think that there's nobody left in the world willing to take a moment to help another human being, then that makes them just a bit less likely to as well.
There needs to be a balance, and in all honesty it should be reported to reflect reality. The good with the bad. - jun2san, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13I like how this picture says: Tip: If a picture doesn't make sense, trying click prev or next, it may be part of a series
Then when I click on it, it takes me to a picture of boobies. Yes, it all makes sense now! - Nev9, on 11/30/2007, -3/+16Wow, people are actually praising a truck in San Francisco. Normally they'd be keying it or something
- onwardknave, on 11/30/2007, -4/+17Bad news deserves to be shown as much (or more than) good news. Reporting those who act unjustly deters others from doing the same, and helps promote change toward fixing those injustices. There's a difference between informative and gratuitous coverages of violence. Fortunately in this case, the good news is also informative. CNN's sensationalist, biased coverage (e.g. Wolf Blitzer's softball to Hillary in the debate), or pop culture concern (Anna Nicole, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton) is more troublesome than how little "good news" they show.
- ellabee, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13Score one for good guys. I bet he didn't even think twice before taking action. Dugg.
- gavin422, on 11/30/2007, -3/+15I don't know what it is with people who feel the need to turn everything into a joke.
- TridenTBoy, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12Yeah, being a hero isn't covered in his insurance probably.
- Matteos, on 11/30/2007, -5/+16What the hell would a saloon be doing on the Golden Gate Bridge?
- zspeed78, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12Well, not exactly sure who will cite an accident.. the dead person wont file a claim, he wont file a claim probably to have his bumper fixed, and the CHP is pretty smart, when they write the report (if its even an 'accident report'..) they wont label him at fault. Furthermore, a 50 yr old man doesnt get dropped from his insurance by causing one 'technical' accident with very low payouts, if any.
- slashbot, on 11/30/2007, -3/+12Nice, but still unfortunately the sad ending. At least he prevented some accidents, though I don't believe they would have been "fatal multi car accidents"...
- menos, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9Article in the SF Chronicle
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2 ... - edwardphoenix, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9Agreed. That's an extraordinary act of courage and selflessness.
- DarkMeld, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9the site is gonna crash because people saw 'click' and 'boobies' in the same sentence
- CabesMojo, on 11/30/2007, -1/+10Nah its the elitist big vehicles are evil attitude that sets me off. I don't drive a tow truck just a 3/4 ton pick up, I used to spend 6 months of the year as a pro snowboard instructor in Tahoe so I see lots of mountain traffic, and a lot of need for the larger vehicles. I still spend a lot of times commuting through the Reno-Tahoe area so snow and hazardous road conditions are common.
Not like I would drive one a big city though. My truck in a pain in the ass in the bay area, nothing down there is made for something its size. - archimago42, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8You've never had insurance have you?
- Gir53457, on 11/30/2007, -1/+9irc scares me now, it's like playing Halo 2 online, without the Halo...
- lollavid, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7I drive across this bridge every day to work. There is no center divider, so if someone drifts towards the middle they will enter oncoming traffic going 50pmh (45mph speed limit). This certainly could have been ugly. Good thinking!
- jquipp, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7Definitely a hero in my opinion.
- compgeek, on 11/30/2007, -7/+14God bless this guy he did what he could to save possibly 50-60 lives too bad to hear that the other driver died at the hospital
If I ever met this guy I'd give him one hell of a handshake and offer to buy him a dinner he is a true hero
MAD RESPECT
dugg - bendiggn, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8Good for him!
Does anyone know if his insurance covered any damage to his truck?
I am not betting on it. They really should. Let's make a big stink about it until they do.
There really needs to be some sort of hero clause in insurance claims that allow people to make these quick decisions without worry of financial burden. My insurance is very expensive and I know it would enter my mind if this happened to me. -
