School board member steps aside b/c of DWI

lohud.com — Howard Sokol was arrested in a DWI charge the night after being elected to the South Orangetown school board. Until time came for him to be sworn in, he was adamant he'd take his seat. But he said weeks of toxic e-mail messages, public confrontations and hate mail exposed his family to too much and he stepped aside.

    • AmyVernon, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2well, i probably should have put "toxic e-mail" in quotes - people got REALLY nasty. if you listen to the audio with it (forgot to mention that in the blurb above), he talks about the stuff people were accusing him of.

  • Mswldflwr, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4I have zero tolerance for repeat offenders. But I won't pass judgment on this man. I've never had a DUI before, but I know I've driven when I shouldn't have and I'm sure many of us have. I actually applaud him for taking the high road.

  • buildbyflying, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2If you've ever had two drinks and drove, then you're just as guilty as this guy. Hell, if you've ever dozed off while driving you're more guilty (likely). I love how we grab the pitchforks and don't consider he's just a person who got caught. You know the saying about a tree falling in the woods? You didn't hear it.
