- geoboy, on 10/22/2007, -8/+183Forget about the sex issue for a moment...
Why is a school handing out drugs to children? At my middle school you couldn't even get any Tylenol. - lordtyros, on 10/21/2007, -5/+11611-year-olds are dumber than *****.
- InannaMe, on 10/21/2007, -57/+163I had sex at the age of 11 and I was pregnant at 13. If someone had done this for me, I wouldn't have had to have an abortion. Stop being naive people.
- TopherT, on 10/21/2007, -15/+104Whats worse, 11 year old girls having sex or eleven year old girls having sex and getting pregnant.
- tehbored, on 10/20/2007, -52/+123Ok, now this is just going overboard. I can understand the need to make birth control reliable, but to 11 year olds? I could understand fourteen, maybe even thirteen, but eleven? WTF? And if for no other reason, I'd at least think that it would be unhealthy since the pills contain high doses of hormones and could ***** with development and all.
- Wrathernaut, on 10/20/2007, -11/+66Don't forget, the pill usually helps prevent acne and makes periods more predictable, both things even good girls can appreciate.
Besides, they tried handing out condoms to the boys... there wasn't a clean doorknob in the school. - Turambar, on 10/20/2007, -6/+58i certainly could
- acex23, on 10/20/2007, -4/+5311 years old. frick, my little sister is 11. she's a baby. I dont care what anyone says, 11 is too young.
- jmpeagle, on 10/19/2007, -4/+495th-6th grade???...yeah you could. That's around the time when it was often dangerous to stand up out of your desk to leave the classroom...
- antonio97b, on 10/20/2007, -4/+47They maybe too young to have sex, but they are much too young to have children.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/21/2007, -13/+54I think the key word is "allow". It's not like they are forcing these girls to take birth control from the school, or go to out and have sex.. They are providing it for girls that ask for it. If a girl is asking for this - chances are pretty good she's going to be sexually active whether she is provided with birth control or contraception of any kind, or simply told that abstinence is the only way to be.
- yomamaisfat, on 10/20/2007, -1/+39I guess the Maury show will have to look elsewhere for pregnant pre-teens.
- 80hd, on 10/20/2007, -4/+38This is all based on FUD.
Yes, the school's health authority can dispense birth control - with parental consent.
And of the 138 kids in this school that had gotten consent to actually even see the health adviser, 5 reported being sexually active.
This is work of the fox spin machine..... - hotspot102, on 10/20/2007, -23/+56I doubt kids at 11 are having sex. But if they are they should be educated about their choices. Not kept in the dark like the abstinence program many districts teach. What we should really worrying about, is the growing problem with exploitation of children. Those types of crackdowns are happening, however they are often misdirected and underfunded. IE, the 17 year old from Georgia who got 10 years for oral with a 15 year old. Just a glance at the national sex offender registry, and you will see there are commuties teaming with predators. We are spending so much time prosecuting people for smoking weed, and 17 year olds for having sex with 15 year olds. That we forget about the 50 year old who has 2 previous pedophile convictions, and has been released to walk our streets. Do we honestly think these type of men can be corrected?
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -24/+56I think people fail to realize that a birth control pill manipulates the endocrine system of it's recipient. Giving a child a hormone pill without the consent of the parents should immediately make those who do so 100% liable for any contraindications that may ensue.
Putting children on birth control pills is nothing short of child endangerment/abuse. Given the multitude of birth control pills available and the necessity for a physician to properly match the pill to it's intended recipient based on their potential for negative responses, how the ***** does some school nurse feel they are capable of doing so? They aren't pain killers. Acetominophen, aspirin and ibuprofren are pretty universal and can be tolerated by most people based on their size, weight and overall dosage. Progesterone, estrogen and their many related steroidal counterparts require precise matching prior to prescribing.
Once again the government continues to chip away at the foundation of the family.
We are descending the slippery slope to full control over us and our children at an alarming rate. Lock and load. - Wacer, on 10/21/2007, -3/+28A lot of 21 year old are dumber than ***** as well.
- j1337, on 10/20/2007, -4/+29It sure beats having a generation of idiots raised by child mothers.
- WaterDragon, on 10/21/2007, -9/+34Maybe if the idiots would stop feeding their kids meats that are shot full of animal hormones, their kids might not develop their secondary sex characteristics at such a young age. Also, if we had any kind of decent central government, that did its only legitimate job, and REGULATED industry on behalf of the people, and not the owners...so that the corporations couldn't just all use sex-imagery to sell every kind of damn product that has nothing to do with sex...
well you know. - doctorfungi, on 10/22/2007, -20/+44Seriously, LMFAO that you're calling us naive...
- Phrag, on 10/20/2007, -5/+29Does the school tell kids to come on in and have sex? No. Do they hand out birth control without first counseling the kids, telling them the risks of sex and trying to dissuade them from doing it? No.
Sex education is not sex advocation! Get your facts straight. - PATSCRU, on 10/20/2007, -13/+34you sir are a *****.
- quomen, on 10/19/2007, -4/+25It also makes cramps much less painful according to my girlfriend.. But this is something that a OB/GYN should distribute, not schools.
- actorboy, on 10/21/2007, -4/+24No? Getting a little digg-down here? So there are people on Digg who think 11 year olds are are fully capable of making adult-level decisions without the benefit of maturity and additional years of experience or a complete education? Should we also repeal child labor laws, drop the drinking age to ten and send pre-teens off to war?
You know, there is a reason adults are legally responsible for children until they reach a certain age. - Wrathernaut, on 10/20/2007, -9/+29Not all 11 year old girls have access to an OB/GYN.
- asands84, on 10/22/2007, -2/+22Sorry?
- Zbrah, on 10/20/2007, -1/+21A 10 yr old girl here in Belgium just delivered a baby a couple of weeks ago. She had a boyfriend who was thirteen and the report said there are about 57 reported cases of 10/11 yr olds getting pregnant and delivering perfectly healthy babies.WEIRD!!!
- Chingmiester, on 10/21/2007, -0/+19***** I'm a senior in high school and they STILL won't give us Tylenol! (you have to have a parent's note saying that you really do need it)
- Shawn4168, on 10/22/2007, -15/+34What the hell is wrong with you? You had sex when you were 11, and you're trying to imply that the problem is with the people that oppose the idea in this article? It's because of selfish moronic sluts like you that this country is so ***** up.
- InannaMe, on 10/21/2007, -11/+28NO just the truth.
- bCabulon, on 10/21/2007, -1/+17But what about the possible side-effects of messing with the hormone levels of people that are in the middle of going through puberty?
- actorboy, on 10/20/2007, -10/+26I think it's safe to say that 11 is a bit young to expect children to make responsible choices.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -4/+20How about PARENTS making that decision for their kids. 11 yrs old is too young for these kids to even try to make these kinds of decisions on their own. That is why we have age of consent laws and a thing called "Minor Child".
A minor is not allowed by law to make certain decisions on his/her own. Like... renting a car, getting an apartment, getting a job (before 16), voting, drinking, smoking, etc.... What makes a school board think that it is ok for 11 yr olds to decide about sex? It is scientifically proven that a child's decision making centers in the brain are not fully developed. Sometimes until age 25.
Also, I have to fill out tons of paperwork just to get my 7 yr old son his inhaler at school, but birth control is freely available? - Leo21k, on 10/19/2007, -4/+19If you were a 12 year old girl would you be telling your parents about you being sexualy active? I know I wouldn't. If it came down to that I'd just have sex without the birth control.
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -1/+16He's talking about the animals we eat that are pumped full of hormones so they can produce more milk. It's causing girls to develop at a younger age than previously.
- colincornaby, on 10/19/2007, -1/+16Please note they're not just handing out birth control to everybody. If an at risk kid goes to the administration, they can give them birth control.
- empraptor, on 10/22/2007, -3/+17She had an abortion. I think we can safely assume no child was born.
- wilhel1812, on 10/20/2007, -9/+23This is a good thing!
11 years pregnant girls are just wrong! - wellyuk, on 10/20/2007, -16/+30Sponsored? Don't be an idiot. This is NOT about a school encouraging children to have sex. It doesn't take a school offering contraceptives to encourage kids to have sex. Wind your neck in and talk sense. That is such a ridiculous assumption.
- cuoops, on 10/19/2007, -1/+15Whateva! Whateva! I'll do what I want!!
- mynameiscece, on 10/21/2007, -11/+24 Personally I don't believe in having sex before marriage, but I know that probably 90-95% of the world acts differently. Its unrealistic to believe that children that are 11 or younger aren't having sex. They probably are willingly or unwillingly. They start teaching sex education at 4th and 5th grades. I remember there being slutty girls already having sex when i was that age. That was over 8 years ago. Times keep changing and children are no longer innocent anymore.
Having schools being able to distribute birth control in all its forms for those who want to use it is responsible. Kids hide things from their parents. Not everyone has a great relationship with their parents. So they don't feel comfortable talking about this with their parents. Having the schools hand them out is no worse than any teenagers going to the health dept. I personally don't know any eleven year old's who can get a ride to the health department. I also don't know any smart enough to go there to get birth control. I didn't know the health dept. distributed that kind of thing until i was sophomore in high school. So schools being able to distribute it would be the next logical step.
Since most school districts cant afford to have a doctor on staff, it makes since that they use a Nurse Practitioner to give them a physical exam. I have personally found that even though I am of age, I still can't get on the roster of patients for a GYN. So I personally see a Nurse Practitioner and I feel that they are fully competent for their job. Not a lot of people know that they actually have all their work looked over by an actual physician. The same would go for one working at a school.
Yes its true that the hormones in birth control pills may do harm to a preteens system. But I know many girls who use it to help regulate their periods and made their PMS a lot more bearable. Going through puberty is hard enough, but with the help of birth control it can be a LOT easier. Not to mention It does wonders to level off mood swings, and we all know tween girls can use less of those. - JigoroKano, on 10/20/2007, -2/+15Because the argument is a red herring. Using contraceptives is taking responsibility. You're setting up a false dichotomy by removing them.
- TheKrillr, on 10/19/2007, -0/+13...Call the FBI.
- actorboy, on 10/19/2007, -5/+18I'm going to make myself believe that's sarcasm.
- thePuck77, on 10/20/2007, -5/+18"I'd hit that."
"Dude, she's 11!"
"Yeah, but she looks 6." - inactive, on 10/19/2007, -4/+17Tell it to your fast food industry.
- ufee, on 10/19/2007, -2/+14At least a 21 year old can get a job.
- Gabberwok, on 10/19/2007, -1/+13When you're talking about your own little sister, any age is too young. And the guy that does it deserves a beating.
- superspud, on 10/19/2007, -4/+16Oh no the chemicals! I heard the chemical dihydrogen monoxide is being supplied in our water systems!
- RxDaniel, on 10/20/2007, -24/+36I'm gonna go with making 11 year old girls think its ok to have sex because it is sponsored by their school.
- freakon, on 10/22/2007, -12/+24Inanna makes a good point, as for me, growing up in carol city meant that I was exposed to this a whole lot younger. I llnever know how many i got pregnant, but this initiative coulda helped alot of them.
