- WakeRider, on 06/20/2009, -2/+33I saw this on the current affairs show Close Up. The washing machine was so loud, the owner needed to wear ear protection to stop from going deaf. Even though the machine was loud, it was still working solidly at 25 years old. The cheap crap we get from China won't last anywhere near that long. I wish quality products were still manufactured, stuff that was built to last.
- hdar3415, on 06/19/2009, -0/+24I have a scary dryer I'll sell for half that.
- Professr, on 06/20/2009, -0/+17Still can't beat three (count 'em, three) wolves.
- netneutrality, on 06/20/2009, -0/+13"Mr Whittaker has set up a website and is now selling scary washing machine T-shirts."
Has he no shame? - burningrobot, on 06/20/2009, -0/+11I just want to know what kind of wisdom the dinosaurs imparted upon him.
- TabDelineated, on 06/20/2009, -1/+12Issue is that you pay a premium on quality. They still make plenty of good stuff.
A lot of people don't realise this and are surprised when the no-name-brand washing machine they bought from walmart for half the cost of a philips or whatever fails in five years. - TonyTheTerrible, on 06/20/2009, -0/+10porthole..
- xgambetx, on 06/20/2009, -0/+9my favorite dinosaur is the velociraptor
- dazparkour, on 06/20/2009, -1/+8Yes if one person out of the nearly 7 Billion people on the planet can afford this, everyone must be rich.
- budgeysmuggler, on 06/20/2009, -0/+6The questions and answers are bloody hilarious!
- Aviatora, on 06/20/2009, -1/+7Actually it's trademe.CO.NZ
- skipvt, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5He may have no shame, but he does have an acute business sense.
- KingGorilla, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5Zoidberg at last you are becoming a crafty consumer!
- inactive, on 06/20/2009, -2/+7The world is in no *real* economic crisis if people can still afford to make "investments" like this.
- hairyblue, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5Why have I not heard of this 'scary washing machine' until now?!
Why is there so little information in this article!!!!
goddammit... - inactive, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5...Are they pre-washed?
- Arowin, on 06/20/2009, -1/+5Yeah, and it wasn't. We don't need marketing gimmicks :P
- b1kerguy, on 06/20/2009, -0/+4SOLD!!
- silverchrysalis, on 06/20/2009, -0/+4i think a business bought it for an advertisement/gag. probably will fetch a bit of attention for them, as well as be some sort of tax writeoff (do they do that in NZ?)

- teamtom, on 06/20/2009, -0/+4Just when you think you have New Zealand figured out...
- Nouman6, on 06/20/2009, -0/+3That's weird....at least the dryer's hot.
- DiggMasterJ, on 06/20/2009, -0/+3i like turtles
- barc0001, on 06/20/2009, -0/+3Agreed, a lot of the appliances built ages ago work forever. My 20+ year old washing machine is unbalanced as hell and when it hits the spin cycle you can feel the vibrations all through the house no matter where you are. Sometimes the internal oscillations are so bad the whole machine jumps back and forth a half a foot at a time, but it keeps on ticking and will probably last another 20 years.
- benroy, on 06/20/2009, -1/+4You speak truth.
I can't remember the last time a had a toaster that lasted for more than three years. - Gareth321, on 06/20/2009, -0/+3The pictures make the auction. The saddle had me doubled over.
- inactive, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2don't bury him he's right. real velociraptors were much much smaller. only about knee height on a human
- YouAreDead, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2wtf
- aquapete, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2mr vintage has great tshirts lol. all new zealand inside jokes.
- compl3x, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2"and attracted a lot of media interest."
Hmm... - skipvt, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2They say in 2012 we'll find out what exactly why they went extinct.
- yacks, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1I'd buy one if they are pre-washed in the scary washing machine...
- aaabbbsss, on 06/20/2009, -1/+2The guy is obviously a lunatic: http://www.scarywashingmachine.com/story.html
- kanojo1969, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Yeah, what a trip down memory lane that was... K-Bars... Th' Dudes @ The Gluepot,, Spot On... Jase & Thingy, holy crap it's like they threw my childhood into a printing press and are selling the result.
*sniff* - seala, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1TradeMe doesn't need advertising. Never did. Started by word of mouth and now there probably isnt a family in NZ that doesnt have an account There is always someone putting on something interesting or clever enough to get TradeMe free publicity
- szskateman22, on 06/20/2009, -1/+2I thought the title read "scary washing machine fetishes" at first glance...
- rdebath, on 06/20/2009, -1/+2The velociraptor is my favourite too, the 300GB one.
- himthatwas, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Dude, I've got a 66 Maytag that has run perfectly for the last 8 years. But it's a bit of a power drain so take that into consideration.
- SoupErmanX, on 06/20/2009, -7/+8link to auction: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Laundry/Washi ...
I got myself one of the tyrannosaurus t-shirts, it's awesome! - diggforworld, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Yea, I herd they can catch up to you pretty fast and do an instant-kill.
- crowbarred, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1I'm from this country ... you have no idea how i am kicking myself for not thinking of this idea %$&$^#^@
- Rain12913, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Wow, that's one swell notebook man!
- stellavision, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1Imagine what might happen if the famous wolf t-shirt was washed in this machine!
- ethien, on 06/21/2009, -0/+0btw . fetish does not mean something your going to hump ,i have dyslexia and im always tripping at the glimpse of a title , the other day a saw a woman with a shirt that said maskare magazine i immediately thought it said massacre magazine and thought it was about a magazine all about massacres . But Im assuming someone here knows the meaning of Grown Up words like fetish , Even if not proclaimed , a "Washing machine fetish" would not be "Weird" at all . I think the mainstream is a reflection of what most people want , and its not "weird" to see a commercial a scene on a movie of a chick secretly talking her panties off in a laundry mat and putting it in the machine to have an extra set , being the cause of a lot of boners in the world , it in fact applies to chicks too , when the actress playing a role of a girl meeting a nice looking dude in the laundry mat starts that intriguing romance . It could just be one of the most common fetishes around dont you think?.
- jackointhebox, on 06/21/2009, -0/+0 This was not marketing gimmic- TradeMe New Zealand makes a lot of money from the people who sell things, while this wasnt a gimmic i cant even IMAGINE the type of hype that this would have generated for the website. I wouldnt be suprized now though, if those tshirt and stuff was actually drummed up by TRADEME.CO.NZ...
this whole story was too funny. it deserved the attention. - DB92, on 06/20/2009, -1/+1I smell some good advertising for TradeMe :)
- utp216, on 06/20/2009, -2/+2He may be a lunatic, but at least he will be a lunatic with some extra money in the bank! :)
- torgreed, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0I've got a 20 year old Maytag, but I don't need hearing protection to use it. It's an import, though: it was made in the U.S.A.
And I can't replace it with one of those new low-water-use ones; anything "better" than that machine won't come apart into pieces small enough to be brought down the stairs into my basement.
But that's OK, there's a great lake connected to my water tap.
My dryer is even older; a Kenmore 102. Had to put a new motor in it 6 years ago; they tend to burn out motors every 30-40 years or so.
My dishwasher is a 25-year-old Maytag. Got a waterpump rebuild kit and new drive belt for it a few years back, like getting a brand-new machine, only it's still fugly.
I can't stand this disposable crap, so I'd rather fix the old stuff. - ethien, on 06/21/2009, -0/+0Dyslexia is actually quite common around the world .
- friendlykiller, on 06/21/2009, -1/+0where do you people get the impression that Chinese goods last not long? I think the americans are bad at looking after things.
