- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28People who don't want to bother with the FCC censoring it? Oh, and it's really really nice not to worry about how far the tower can broadcast, no two channels competing for the same frequency, and the ability to listen to the same channel on a two to four hour drive.
- ttntyler, on 10/12/2007, -20/+43Howard > O&A
- BenDeeSBS, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33I personally think that this is sad. Management really is out of touch with their customers when they coin terms like this to describe their largest fans. Hopefully XM does not think the same way; this kind of thinking could lead to the downfall of the services.
- sumrandommember, on 10/12/2007, -13/+32XM does not hold the same philosophy. I have left comments with XM in the past and even received feedback from one comment.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18True (And very lame!) Sirius Customer Service story:
I wanted to get Sirius because I have money burning holes in my pockets I guess. I work from home, and wanted to listen to some of their programming through my PC speakers (30 lbs each baby) so I called up Sirius Canada.
They answered, and I asked. I'd like to signup. They asked me if I had purchased a radio. I informed them I don't have a radio, and don't need one, I just want to stream through their website, which they offer to their subscribers. He says he can't do anything without a radio ID. He puts me on hold twice, comes back and tells me that he talked with the staff there, and they thought the best way for me to make this happen was... *drumroll*
To ask a friend who has Sirius for their password, so I could just listen with their account!! I said, are you seriously suggesting I pirate your service?? And he said... "Uhhhh, I guess, yeah"...
So I asked him for his password, but he wouldn't give it to me. :/ - microbreak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I could never bash Sirius. After having two units stolen from my car and my girlfriend's car, they replaced BOTH of them, along with a keychain and a hat, free install gift card, and an FM direct line adapter, and gave me two months of free service....for $0.01!!!!
Yeah, these guys rock, the problem wasn't even them, someone stole my crap and THEY replaced it....AND gave me free service for two months. I didn't even ask for any of it, all I wanted was to pause my subscription while I was without a unit. - m8ymerc1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13It's commercial free music. Now instead of 6 min. of music followed by 10 of commercials I got all music all the time,
It is not radio! - uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13this is the biggest crackhead post I've ever seen on digg
- theamazingkort, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19WAHHH
- damndj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17How about 6 million people on Sirius and climbing?
8 million on XM (and falling)
So far, that's about 14 million people paying for radio. Not too shabby, is it?
As for the FCC.. It would be criminal to allow them to regulate Satellite Radio since it is a PAY service that people go out of their way to get. They just can't happen upon it like they can broadcast TV. - RaistlinMajere, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Please consider that this is a rumor at best. Show me a more reputable source with something to back up their allegations.
I am a satisfied Sirius customer and I feel they are very responsive to their listeners, far more so than terrestrial radio. - shaun3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Cable stations regulate themselves. They are afraid the advertisers will leave if they don't. But they DON'T have to follow any FCC rules. The best example is Comedy Central, which is on every basic cable service I've ever seen, quite frequently shows movies and comedy specials completley uncensored after midnight. They've shown South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, Baseketball, some Chris Rock specials, some George Carlin, and lots of others. They had Zoolander on, the other night. And don't forget the ***** episode of South Park. I guarantee no terrestrial station would have shown that, especially during prime time.
- brazenisgod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14(Caution: attached personal opinion.)
Personally, I still think its better than XM. I bought a new truck and it had XM and couldn't get the Sirius installed fast enough. Commercials, edited content and repeating songs to death killed XM for me. /2cents - a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14The same was said about Cable TV before. It's just too bad that cable is regulated even though you pay for the channels. Maybe if satellite radio gains more subscribers, it''ll have more regulation?
- doogieboo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I've had sirius for a while now and its been great. I did send a complaint early on a saturday morning one time and I got a response within about 10 minutes. I was impressed.
It seems like this guy is having a little fit because he didn't get his way. - cyenu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Public Radio seems to be the last vestige of use in the actual FM/AM airwaves these days. Whatever isn't on NPR is more than likely on someone's MP3 player.
MP3 killed the radio star, but Ira Glass is still going at it, I guess. - williamharper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9My Dodge came with three months free of Sirius, and I liked it so much that I bought a subscription once the three months was up.
I've dealt with customer service at Sirius, and I must say, they were very helpful.
I don't recall being referred to as "sperm" or "semen," but I may have missed it. - diggermike, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I have gotten but good response from Sirius when I have called or wrote an email to them.
- AniceAtheist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Sirius is great. No complaints. It came free with my new car and I have already pre-ordered for another 12 months. So much better then Terrestrial radio and as a Canadian it's the only way to get Stern. Unless you download it but I'd rather just listen when I'm in the car. No commercials on music channels. No censoring and a lot of international News channels.
- hbusa2003, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10O&A = wana be Stern
STERN brought millions to SIRIUS
Q&A brought thousands? and now back on regular radio quote from wiki "Opie and Anthony began broadcasting on October 4, 2004 exclusively for XM after two years of being off the air. Initially, the show was offered to XM subscribers at a premium cost of $1.99 a month, to which they found some resistance. In April 2005, "High Voltage" became part of the basic XM subscription. There are no numbers available with respect to the number of premium subscribers. Hughes (opie) gave some indication, however, when he told the Long Island press in 2006, "we went from having a show that was syndicated in 17 major markets to having a few thousand.", which did not help to clear up the discrepancy. - scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Best comedians like Vos and Jim Norton... right. Mean for the sake of mean isn't funny... just like being crude for the sake of crude isn't funny. I know I laugh a little harder every time one of them calls someone else "dummy".
I enjoy O&A when I catch them on occasion, then they start blabbing about Stern, or treating callers like crap for no reason, and the funny starts crashing down. Plus it always sounds like they're pushing their voices...
At the end of the day, you're going to listen to who you like better... you saying that O&A ARE better means nothing (your name IS cockmaster). At the end of the day I find Stern way more interesting, not because he's funnier as a person, but because of his ability to interview and get real information out of people and the cast of characters that he surrounds himself with. You're right... interviewing strippers, not that great. A 70 year old woman having her first orgasm while riding the sybian on the air... radio classic. - dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -17/+23O&A suck, they spent an entire week on the CSI:Miami quotes that they saw on youtube. They're just backwash, stuff I've read about weeks, if not monthes earlier.
- dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6To all the armchair broadcast experts, cable television is NOT currently regulated for decency by the FCC. It's self-regulated, they only have to worry about freaking out advertisers. That's why they can run stuff like The Shield, or the South Park movie uncensored.
Ted Stevens and company have been pushing to change that, though... - dimension, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I am a happy Sirius customer. My wife loves the ad free music and I love the NFL, the comedy channels, and Howard Stern.
Howard Stern gives the best interview in the business. Sure half the time its strippers and homeless, but when he gets a star on the show he gets more interesting stuff out of them then anyone. The increased freedom of satellite radio has made his interviews very compelling. No more stopping in the middle of a bit, he decides when to break. He regularly goes on for an hour a half without a break because everything is rolling nicely. Sure he is not as edgy as he used to be, but he's 52, a father of 3 girls, divorced, and he has grown up. I just don't understand the bashing. I know O&A have to be competitive, but bashing a true legend in the business is childish when he practical created the very radio you are doing. You aren't winning me over with "Stern invented" huh huh... Give me a reason to check it out, be original, be funny. If Stern sucks is your best bit, I think I'll stay with Stern.
This whole Sirius vs XM thing is old. If you like the XM programming better get XM, if you like the Sirius programming better, get Sirius. But don't bash other peoples tastes.
But there is one thing every XM person can agree with me, satellite radio kicks regular radio ass. Sure Ipods and stuff are cool too, but there is nothing like getting 120 choices on the fly, it is nice to get new content brought to me, then me having to search it all out. But if you want to handpick all your stuff I have no problem with that either. - g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It never fails. Try to discuss Satellite and you end up with a pissing match between O&A fans and Stern Fans.
I haven't called Sirius since I subscribed in 12/05. I still don't regret all the money I spent to get the radio and the sub.
And Stern does 5-6 hour shows and takes about a total of 25 minutes of break time spread out through that 5 to 6 hours, it's hardly what I would call lazy. Should they sit there with bottles to pee in so they never leave the mic?
I don't understand how you can compare music. It's subjective. So is Stern/O&A. - TheGilmanator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I've had Sirius for about two and a half years now. I tried out both online before I made the decision and I couldn't agree with you more.
My only complaint is the shrinking size of the playlist on Alt-Nation//21. - zomgflamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6meh i hate that ***** when people say they need to play underground bands or indy. 99% of those bands blow camel ***** anyways.
Post some of them here and we will evaluate and prove the theory wrong. - culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sirius must be doing something right. They're growth
I have no doubt that they don't think much of many/most of the comments they receive. But let's face it, the vast majority of people writing into voice their opinion have no clue what makes good radio. There are a number of things I'd like to see that I know will have a limited audio. The difference is that *I* don't go around assuming that everything I that like would be a commercial success. Anyone who has had to deal with customer suggestions knows how difficult it is to sort through the chaff to find some useful recommendations.
As for XM... they have decent music channels, but they had no vision beyond that. They had a chance to put Sirius out of business by signing Stern, but now Sirius is rapidly overtaking them. XM is constantly playing catch-up on their programming these days. Sirius announces Stern so XM does O&A. When that doesn't pan out, they announce Oprah. Of course, neither of those are exclusive, so that hasn't panned out. Sirius gets the NFL, NBA and NHL so XM gets MLB. Now Sirius has Nascar (which I don't care about) so now XM will probably add Formula One or maybe the Cub Scouts pine wood derby races.
Most of us who have Sirius have nothing against XM's music channels. They're good. But Sirius figured it out early on that exclusives were going to win subs in much the same way that HBO did with their original programming. And that strategy is winning for Sirius right now. - hbusa2003, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Damn thats a pretty big O&A army
STERN RULES JUST FACE IT - advancedOption, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think we've all been on the internet long enough to realise the people that write in, call in, blog, post, and rant about things are the kind of people that want to be listened to. They're often opinionated, arrogant, and ***** annoying. Go read any Mac vs PC debate (comes from both sides).
When they get good suggestions they probably recognise them, but it's pretty easy to spot SPERM...
...you can quote me on that! - itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its a cached copy ya dolt, coral cache
- cajungator2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know about Coffee House and Spectrum but yea i like Sirius. They need a tech channel though. Riley Martin is hilarious.
- Detritus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This hasn't been my experience... In fact, quite the opposite. I got mailed $50 for giving constructive and thoughtful feedback on one channel. I think McMullen is just bitter and spouting *****. He might have heard the term once to describe someone deserving of it.
@parasocks: Nice job asking him for his password! I would have done the exact same thing! - zomgflamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5is this crackhead bob? wung tan soup?????
- zydeco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Whenever I see someone complaining about a company not listening to it's customers and letting the customers design the service, I think of that Simpsons episode where Homer gets to design his own car...
"Some things are so snazzy they never go out of style! Like tail fins... And bubble domes... And shag carpeting..." - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My S50 stopped working a couple months ago, it ended up just being a bad antenna. I called in, they sent me a brand new unit and told me to ship mine back to them. No questions asked, it was awesome. So, I get the package and it's just filled with extra crap like a $35 FM Modulator and any kind of wire or adapter I could ever need! I couldn't believe it. Then I read the enclosed paper and it says they are giving me 2 months free service for my 'inconvenience'. It was honestly the best customer service experience I've ever had.
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@TheGilmanator
Strange, I've been listening to Alt Nation for quite a while, and the play list seems to have expanded recently. That said, the shows of the four main DJs on Alt Nation vary a lot. I think Demos has the widest variety of music during his show. He's also very responsive to comments. So, if you don't like the rotation, write in. - david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As far as listening to listener comments, I'll agree their "mail cops" (the ones who actually read and direct customer comments) aren't so bright sometimes. I e-mailed about something on Alt Nation and received an e-mail back saying it had been redirected to their Beatles channel, or something like that. That said, some of the DJs are VERY receptive to listener comments. Alt Nation in particular has begun to add some bands and tracks I've recommended.
Even if this is an issue with upper management, I'm sure it's no worse than terrestrial radio stations.
@parasocks
When was this that you attempted to sign up for just internet access? Sirius originally didn't offer internet only access. Recently they've added the service. - troub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2brazenisgod: I have XM, and the only channel I've ever heard that has commercials is Disney. I guess there are some others, but with all the commercial-free rock, jazz, blues, and classical stations, I've never heard them. I also couldn't give two ***** about Opie and Anthony OR Stern, and I can't believe that with all the great stuff on both SatRad services, the fight always comes down to Howard vs. O&A.
- calebcharles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'll tell you who pays for radio.
Me.
I like niche music. Alt Nation, Boombox, Chill, Sirius Disorder, Backspin etc. See, I don't live in a huge radio market like NYC or LA, so I get to hear all the great music out there that simply isn't played in my ClearChannel backwater. And what a backwater it is. (Oh, I forgot Underground Garage)
Granted, some of those channels approximate ClearChannel style by "pushing" certain songs but there are always 69 other stations.
fanboi ftw. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirius_Satellite_Radio - ironbear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sirius Backstage is a fan site, not affiliated with Sirius, and they clearly do not want to be mistaken for a Sirius company site. They're celebrating their 5th anniversary next week. Their POV is definitely independent, too.
- catfud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1your thinking of the deal XM made with clear channel when they first started
they simply simulcast clear channel content so much like ESPN radio of course there is going to be commercials
but XMs music channels have no commercials - dirrtydirrty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@catfud and troub
There are several "commercial" music stations on XM. I believe Viacom owns some stock in XM and owns some channels on XM. Those few channels actually have a few commercials per hour. XM has countered that by adding the same type of music genre station that the "Viacom" station plays without commercials. Thus giving the listener 2 "70's" music stations, for example, with one being the Viacom owned station with a few commercials. I believe that the contract with Viacom will expire within a few years or so, making all of XM's music stations pretty much commercial-free after that. Again, this is what I've heard and those stations that I mentioned were just examples (I don't know if there are 2 70's music stations or how many actual "commercial" stations there are, etc.). - mzwaterski, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Objection, hearsay...
- troub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What music stations have you listened to on XM that have commercials? All 30 or so XM stations that I listen to almost every day are commercial-free, and as far as I know all the other stations I listen to less often also are commercial-free. The only station I've ever heard a commercial was when I accidentally landed on the Disney station right after I got my player.
- MRosamond, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So what's up with that stories url (www.siriusbackstage.com.nyud.net:8080)? Looks to me like someone is trying to make their site look like an official Sirius site. Probably someone that owns XM stock trying to make some bucks.
- superstewy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"That is taking the 'I, me, myself' approach. Just because they treated you well doesn't mean they didn't treat the next 1,000 poorly. Even Hitler treated a few Jews well."
And just because there is one blog on the internet that says they had a bad experience means that everyone else has had one? Figure out your own logic allstar.
I've been a happy SIRUS customer for a few months now, I love it. I'm not going to say it is better than XM for everyone though, just look at the content and make your own decision. I picked SIRUS because they had more Pittsbugh Penguins games and better Rock stations. - catfud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3XM let NASCAR go because they wanted to much money
see XM is a company that tries to make money
not hemorrhage it
O&A were on XM more then a year before Howard was even announced - catfud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2XM has no commercials on their music stations too
- aaron411, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I love my Sirius Stiletto 100. Never use my iPod anymore.
Best channels on Sirius:

Best show (besides Stern):
