- ramong, on 10/10/2007, -10/+61This is shocking Canada is usually so peacefully. However, I lived in Vancouver for 2 years and I know the drug trade has been growing rampantly and whenever you have drugs, you are going to get crime.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -14/+53Wherever you have DRUG PROHIBITION you are going to have crime.
- DaveV, on 10/10/2007, -27/+12Where you have losers who take drugs you are going to get crime. Right, loser?
- daridave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4In other words, wherever you are, you're f*ed, right ?
Second life just got a point. /sarcasm - TarikofGotham, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Clearly someone who advocates intelligent drug control policy instead of voodoo pharmacology is someone who must be smoking crack and ripping bongs left and right. Cause alcohol affect people's judgement or likelyhood of driving drunk, beating their spouse or otherwise hurting people at all...
- remccain, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11So prohibition in the 20's wasn't responsible for the increase of mob violence? It was the losers taking drugs, er, drinking bathtub gin, right?
- daridave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4In other words, wherever you are, you're f*ed, right ?
- Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Whenever you have drugs you're going to have crime. And our strict drug prohibition comes in the form of cracking down on crystal meth and whatnot, actually very dangerous drugs. Recreational drugs like marijuana? We're one of the softest in the world.
- Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Who is crystal meth dangerous to? I don't take it so it doesn't harm me. The only reason it affects me is I am paying taxes towards prohibition which in turn raises the price of the drug due to supply/demand. This could cause some drug addicts to resort to violence to make money, and creates the violent drug dealers. You never see Budweiser getting in a shootout with Molson. If the drug-taker gets a bad batch and over-doses, that is clearly the fault of prohibition. Rarely do you see a bad batch of beer on the market. People should be free to do whatever they want to themselves, it's a little long forgotten thing called 'Personal Responsibility'.
- feebie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It would be dangerous to you if someone in your apartment building was a meth cook and nobody in the building knew it.
Especially if this cook is in the apartment below, beside, or above you. - JonLatane, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4@feebie
And why would there be a meth cook living near you? Because the *****'s illegal. If it were legal, there's no way the kinds of idiots who cook meth could make any money doing so. - feebie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1@ JonLatane
You obviously don't know much about how and where the crystal meth drug is made. - Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Back in the 20's under alcohol prohibition there were illegal stills in peoples houses that would explode from time to time. As Jon pointed out, after alcohol prohibition was lifted, the profit incentive disappeared for people to risk manufacturing it in their home. It became cheaper & easier to just buy it at a store.
- feebie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It would be dangerous to you if someone in your apartment building was a meth cook and nobody in the building knew it.
- alliekins619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Silly Protonz, didn't you realize that the Government's main reason for existence is to mother you? "Kids, wear your seat belts." "Kids, don't watch violent movies." "Kids, don't touch that marijuana." "Kids, don't talk on your cell phones while you're driving."
- Klinky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Meth is pretty bad stuff. The "labs" used to create it are filthy & usually the houses are boarded up and condemned afterwards. The users cannot keep a stable job & must resort to stealing. Overall it is an awful life destroying drug.
Marijuana should be legalized as it is a natural substance & does have some health properties to it. It's no worse than tobacco or booze. Employers don't want drunk workers, nor do they wanted stoned workers. Most people can handle their drinking to where they're not coming to work sloshed(most, not all, I've seen a few come in after all night binges and crash at their desk). People would be of at least similar responsibility with marijuana.
As for "hard drugs" such as coke, meth, heroin & LSD(acid). I am not sure these should ever be legalized, I just can't see how fair it is to push an addictive substance on the general populace. Though this is already done with tobacco, alcohol & caffeine. At least the withdrawal effects of those on the user are not as severe as say meth or heroin. You can quit those "easily" compared to meth. So you could say, since we already have soft addictive drugs, I am not sure how one more would be bad, especially when marijuana is probably more natural than the cigarettes you buy at 7-11. But regardless, I don't think it'd be a good idea to ever legalize addictive hardcore drugs unless we want a bunch more retarded junkies running around. - flashingcurser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Isn't it interesting that crystal meth was an over the counter drug in 1965, and there was almost no crime associated with it. It was commonly used in cold pills, no-doze, diet pills, some aspirin (excederine I belive), dexadine, and methadrine. It was introduced in the us as an over-the counter drug in 1922. It was lumped in with a bill to legalize LSD, mostly because it was very popular for all night study sessions by collage students. I guess nobody kills each other over something that is only pennies a gram, vs now $ 100's per gram. Not to mention that prior to 65 there was more per capita use....
- bbhh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2meth is huge in vancouver, and leads to a high percentage of the crime. if you guys think prohibition is the problem, i challenge you to go to east vancouver, an area that the police and city have let get out of control, look at the addicts and mentally ill that wander the streets, and try to hold onto that opinion. you wont.
- Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've been there just to see it (locked the doors on the car immediately). You are right that there is a problem, but from my point of view, you are more correct in calling it a 'mentally ill' issue. Many of the homeless have mental problems, and a large number of them end up in Vancouver because of the decent year-round weather (and didn't Ralph give the Alberta homeless a bunch of one-way bus tickets to Van at some point?). Anyway, the drug issue is used as more of a scapegoat by many, possibly to ease their conscience. Prohibition doesn't help these people, I am more of a fan of the volunteer/church groups that aim to help the homeless.
- Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Who is crystal meth dangerous to? I don't take it so it doesn't harm me. The only reason it affects me is I am paying taxes towards prohibition which in turn raises the price of the drug due to supply/demand. - fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Legalizing marijuana would probably cause a decrease in crime, and definitely a decrease in arrests. Legalizing, say, crack, on the other hand, would not be a good thing. You don't want people on crack running around your cities.
- cl0r0x70, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Ummmm. . . you already have people on crack running around your cities.
Now what? - tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3cl0r0x70, there are also rapists, murderers, gang members, and sex offenders running around our cities. Should we just legalize those things too? I'm not for prohibition on safer drugs, but you have to draw the line somewhere, for the sake of the populace. If every block has lunatics on powerful drugs running around, your country will become known as a wretched hive of scum and villany and it'll all go downhill from there.
- emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Hey guess what: It's illegal to be drunk in public! Why could this law not be applied to other intoxicating drugs?
- Lewie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You could just put a heavy sentence on those caught using drugs in public. It will be free enough that there won't be gangs trying to buy/sell the stuff, but anyone caught using it in public go to prison for a couple years. Sounds fair enough to me.
Rapists and murderers cause violence to people (in effect taking their freedom from violence away - a Social Contract with the government). Drugs kept in private are victimless, and not comparable to those crimes.
- cl0r0x70, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Ummmm. . . you already have people on crack running around your cities.
- bosks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Look, as much as I don't appreciate these kinds of things going on in the country, I just want to say:
This kind of stuff happens; it's unfortunate, but what can you do? Angry people do angry things. Lets work on, you know... making life about living again. You know, not just paying off debt and being constantly scared by big-brother. Oppression. I always say this, but no one seems to listen. Oh, well. I'll just sit here and be happy on my own. - raynar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Damn. America's hat has a little action.
- jackkerouac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I thought America was Canada's basement?
- remccain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"Canada is like living in a loft apartment over a really cool party happening downstairs" ~ Robin Williams
- yingjai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Same thing with murder. If you prohibit murder with laws, of course there are going to be crimes. If you allow murder and people can freely kill people, thene crime rates would drop to 0% no matter how many die.
- DaveV, on 10/10/2007, -27/+12Where you have losers who take drugs you are going to get crime. Right, loser?
- DaveV, on 10/10/2007, -9/+14But, drugs are good. I see people saying so on Digg.
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12"Now, let's be honest. Not all drugs are good. Some of them are great." - Bill Hicks
- bosks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Drugs don't kill people; angry people kill people.
Angry people on drugs that kill people have a scapegoat.- yingjai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Same thing as angry crazy people who kill people. They can blame it on their mental state.
- emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That is such an ignorant comment. This was gang violence. Yes, the dispute was over drugs, but how are they supposed to solve such disputes? Go to court? The problem here is the fact that drugs are illegal to begin with. This never would have happened otherwise.
- Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I live in Vancouver and it's a great city; there's a reason we're voted in the top three cities in the world to live in several years in a row. But the downtown east side is horrendous, and news like this just makes it's reputation worse.
- mrfish, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Your right... Suppress the NEWS!!! That should solve it.
- feebie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This didn't happen in the downtown East Side. It happened on East Broadway, which is close to the southern part of Commercial Drive.
- Battleloser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Smart drug dealers know peace is good for business, these guys are just idiots.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really? They control their territory and employees with intimidation and demostrations of the will to take a life if you cross them.
- Battleloser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Maybe 20 years ago, or in areas where pride is valued above profit, but anyone with who has actually thought this out knows that a peaceful business will not generate the type of public and political interest that leads to increased police action.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really? They control their territory and employees with intimidation and demostrations of the will to take a life if you cross them.
- ninja0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I live in vancouver haha. didn't even know that happened :O
finally something amazing happens and gets vancouver on digg!... although... this wouldn't get any other city on digg :P - jus1haz2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Damn my first experience in Canada sucked balls. Me and my 2 friends were jumped by 15 local guys...***** sucked ass. We went to Osoyoos though.
- etnu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0People occasionally kill one another because they're drunk, but it's rare, and typically caused by drunk driving.
People kill one another because they're high, too, at about the same rate as when drunk.
The real violence from drugs come from a few sources:
- drug dealers killing each other over turf
- drug dealers killing clients for not paying up
- drug addicts killing dealers who they can't pay, or to get more drugs
If drugs were legal, and an addict wanted more drugs, you know what he'd do? Go to the store and buy them. The dealers would cease to exist.
After it's legalized, start a public awareness campaign and let peer pressure handle the rest. Look at how few young people are smoking if you really want to see how powerful something as simple as awareness campaigns can be.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -14/+53Wherever you have DRUG PROHIBITION you are going to have crime.
- MarkDykeman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+41Canada is like many other countries: we have peaceful spots (most of the country) and some parts of the country which are more dangerous.
- themonkeysaid, on 10/10/2007, -13/+3Nah... this is like 2 minutes worth of violence in Iraq.
- NeMeSiS187, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You mean like 10 seconds worth of violence in America?
- cyberpunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the dangerous parts being the GTA
- themonkeysaid, on 10/10/2007, -13/+3Nah... this is like 2 minutes worth of violence in Iraq.
- RogerStrong, on 10/10/2007, -17/+23Note that when it happens in Canada it's big news, which is why some guy posted it here. In some other places it's routine....
- Anrkist, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3You want a cookie for that?
- keyboardduder, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4like philly!
- Godzmarine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Sad but true.
- khail250, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2like iraq, 80 people die in a car bomb, yeap diplomacy working very well...
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Are you making an off tipic comment on purpose or are you really that stupid?
- mmockett, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Are you writing your comment in south african dialect?
or should I say dialict.
Why am I even typing anym...- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1And my responce to you is.... What?
- mmockett, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Are you writing your comment in south african dialect?
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Are you making an off tipic comment on purpose or are you really that stupid?
- DWatch, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Its because there are only like 150 people that live in Canada.... thats why its big news.
- Cannon13, on 10/10/2007, -25/+11Wow, people with guns use them to kill other people.
Why don't you Americans fix your own ***** up country instead of trying to shift attention and make ours look bad.- SteelChicken, on 10/10/2007, -9/+84 posts to america bashing. you guys are slacking off.
- keyboardduder, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7you think we run this ***** up government? All we can do it complain and protest. And Ive been doing that.
- mrcpu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Actually, from what I understand, your right to protest was recently taken away! doh!
- perfectsilence, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2we are americans! we make fun of other countries and make them look bad so our ***** up country look good in comparison!
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Na you just wanted to make the rest of us on Digg look like geniuses. Keep up the good work!
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -7/+8Wow. A tad upset that Canada isn't the happy peacful place peopel like you always claim it is. It's news because it goes against the propaganda people like you love to push.
- Dweller99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why dont you take a look at the murder rate in Canada before you start talking about people pushing propaganda.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1I did. :-)
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1I suggest you read this little study. It's pretty interesting and adresses the topics we have been discussing here.
http://teapot.usask.ca/cdn-firearms/Cramer/us.canada.html- there, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21980-81 stats? Canada has seen many new gun laws since that time (particularly Ontario) and seen dramatic reductions in violent gun crime. I suggest you look at peer reviewed data rather than data that has obviously been cherrypicked by some dude on the Internet to promote some ideological agenda.

- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Just incase you were too lazy to take apeek, here's a lil bit of the article:
"I've seen some Canadian gun prohibitionists claim that Canada's murder rate is as high as it because too close proximity to the U.S. causes gun diffusion. Again, the same article and page:
The Maritimes have the lowest homicide rates in Canada, and Newfoundland (0.68 in 1981) has the lowest of all. Quebec's rate (2.93) was lower than Alberta's (3.43) and BC has the highest provincial rate (4.02), but the NWT and the Yukon have the highest rates of all (11.57 and 4.57 respectively). These sparsely populated territories also have Canada's highest rate of increase, while in the US the increase is highest in the major metropolitan areas, but this discrepancy may reflect the location of the 2 countries' socially alienated populations, America's blacks in urban slums, Canada's native people in the North (*see* Native People Law). Less than 2% of the Canadian population, the Inuit, Indians, and Metis comprised 16% of the homicide victims between 1961 and 1974.
If U.S. gun diffusion is a cause of murder in Canada, the effect must be utterly overwhelmed by other factors, since the Northwest Territories have absolutely no contact with the U.S., while the Yukon directly borders Alaska, and has a much lower rate."
- Dweller99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why dont you take a look at the murder rate in Canada before you start talking about people pushing propaganda.
- max420, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Wow, I live in Vancouver and i've never witnessed this time of crime. This is the first I am hearing about this.
- alpha94, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You can't be serious. Hasting and Main? Hello?
How about just about anywhere in Surrey?- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Go easy on him. He doesn't get out much.
- max420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hah, I get out quite a bit thank you :p .
- Leviathan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Paranoid much? you make it sound like someone gets murdered every day on Hastings and in Surrey. Hastings is nothing more than a bunch of cracked out drug addicts, I'd be more afraid of getting stuck by a needle than getting shot.
- max420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Exactly, hell I live at East Broadway and Commercial, they are some ***** up crazies here, but they leave you alones, except for maybe asking for change here and there.
- max420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hastings and Main isn't that bad. Its the slums sure, but I walk through it all the time when I go to the weed school. ( for people that don't know, the weed school is a place where you go buy weed.... quite popular.) Anyway. the bums there will leave you alone. What I was saying is that I... personally, have never witnessed someone getting shot, or stabbed or any violent crime. I am not saying it doesn't happen in Vancouver. I just mean that I have never personally witnessed a violent crime.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Go easy on him. He doesn't get out much.
- xtr3m, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3First time you hear about it? It's on every single newspaper's front page here.
- max420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I know, but I typically don't read the news until after I get to work. The first site I check in the morning when I get in is Digg, so I saw it here first. When I was heading home after work I saw it on the cover of all the newspapers, even the free ones 24 Hours and the Metro.
- hansk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1i made the mistake of walking down hasting street twice. i feared for my life, everyone on that street deserves to be shot dead.
- jebusjay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0No people with senseless comments like yours are the people we should all be scared of.
Your an idiot - mattcoady, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've been through that area a few times. Its not the nicest part of town, but I didn't fear for my life. Its more akin to a zombie film. They're all wandering aimlessly with blank stares minding their own business. I mean, at worst, if you found your self in any trouble, all you'd have to do is walk west at an upbeat pace.
- max420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hahahaha, Hastings is perfectly safe. I agree that those people should be taken care of, but not shot dead. they should be put in shelters, and moved off of the street. Anyway, I agree with the zombies comment, thats what they do, they wander around like zombies. groaning and all. I've been asked for change, smokes and even food by the bums, but they never react violently when I decline them, (I always do.) there is no reason to fear for your life on East Hastings.
- jebusjay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0No people with senseless comments like yours are the people we should all be scared of.
- BESTenemy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2BC gets about 10 homicides a year. The very place that had a shootout had fatal stabbing in 2005. I have no idea why this article made it to Digg's front page when things like this keep happening or regular basis.
The gunners were reported as of Asian descent. Most of the time, though, such cases get blamed on East Indian gangs. Vancouver at this point is about 40% Asian, 10% East Indian, so statistics really doesn't mean much, but news outlets still emphasize the race of the attackers. - Eigtball, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You need to leave your basement, or check the news more often.
- alpha94, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You can't be serious. Hasting and Main? Hello?
- CaptainSponge, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I'm in Australia and we heard about this... seriously doubt we'd have heard about it if it was in any part of the US. Sounds very Sopranos
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Na this is less likely in the smaller towns and cities in the US. The crime centers tend to be large population centers and border towns along the US/Mexico border. The whole US is not dangerous. I knwo it's hard to believe given how the media loves to focus on the bad spots so much. I should know I moved from a large city which also happend to be on the border. SanDiego California to a small town/city in Indiana. Not a damn thing goes on here.
- crazihouse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. I asked the black screen at the end but got no answer out of it.
- Auraness, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3The aura of evil is spreading =O
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17Canada has a problem keeping the cheap, illegal and abundant guns from being smuggled into Canada. Our gun laws would be much more effective if our neighbour wasnt the most gun-nut-nation on the planet.
- PasteEater, on 10/10/2007, -7/+7Maybe the reason Canada is having a problem keeping cheap, illegal guns out of Canada is because there is a *demand* for them. But that's probably our fault too, right?
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1By your logic, being a crack dealer is completely fine, because there is a demand for crack?
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow are you a moron or what? There wouldn't be guns flowing into Canada if there wasn't a large enough demand there for them to make worth while to ship them there. The point is there are lots of people in Canada who WANT those cheap guns. This fool made it sound like the guns are being forced upon them.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1By your logic, being a crack dealer is completely fine, because there is a demand for crack?
- PasteEater, on 10/10/2007, -7/+7Maybe the reason Canada is having a problem keeping cheap, illegal guns out of Canada is because there is a *demand* for them. But that's probably our fault too, right?
- Alegoo92, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That's such a jackass thing to say. Last year, btw, there was a school shooting in Canada.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17Canada has a problem keeping the cheap, illegal and abundant guns from being smuggled into Canada. Our gun laws would be much more effective if our neighbour wasnt the most gun-nut-nation on the planet.
- 0two, on 10/10/2007, -2/+56Here in Toronto there have been more and more ***** gang shootings. A few innocent people have been caught in the crossfire, and that really pisses me off. If you're going to be a ***** gang dumbass and get shoot other ***** gang dumasses, that's one thing. It's still a horrible waste of human lives, but at least they sort of had it coming. They knew what they were getting themselves into. But when an innocent 11 year old at a birthday party gets shot by a stray bullet, you've crossed the ***** line. And I hate to say it, but the vast majority (if not all) of these shootings are Caribbean. I'm not saying all Caribbeans are bad, I know some really great Caribbean people, but there is definitely a subculture that we don't want or need in our country. These people are contributing little to nothing to society, and have incredibly high crime rates.
Most kids are brought up by single mothers because the men disappear the ***** second pregnancy comes into the situation, and the women allow this to happen for whatever reason. The mother works 2 jobs, the kid gets little to no attention, doesn't do well in school, then joins a gang. It's a vicious circle. I don't know what the solution is here, but there is a definite problem.- Waiting2awake, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13Actually I would say it is because the mothers look at their kids as revenue - the fathers look at the mothers as a status symbol/revenue and whenever anyone tries to actually help the cries of racism fly and more money(revenue) gets thrown at the community so that they stop screaming race, which obviously re-enforces the initial looks.
In BC, I would assume it is more Asian crime, where as here in T.O it is more the Jamaicans / Black Community. - frsrblch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Here's to hoping that Alberta doesn't get like that...
- AROZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can see them coming to Calgary soon. Here's to hoping the drug lords don't vacation in Banff...
- ninsei, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2actually, this was a gang on gang shooting. They walked in an started shooting at one table w/ 8-10 people sitting at it. They weren't after anyone else.
- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Welcome to the American ghetto, noobs.
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Get them a PC, Internet connection, and join an online gaming clan. I promise you'll see a decrease in gang activity. I know it sounds silly, but a good solid online 'clan' can provide many of the things otherwise found when you join a criminal gang.
- Unlgued, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't think you've seen Vancouver's downtown internet cafes. Many of them just further the effects of small minds and pack mentality. Some of them are just downright scary.
- stoneplanet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Weren't there several gang shootings in Internet cafes in Southern California a few years ago??
- altcountryman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately the cash proceeds of gaming are a lot less than what can be made on the corner. (Canadian) dolla dolla bill, y'all.
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Another thing that can be done to at least help a little bit (gotta start somewhere right?):
Actually deport the people who are lined up to be deported.
Implement a REAL penal system that criminals might actually fear would also go a long way. - 1of42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yeah, ***** is getting bad. I do have to point out though, it's not like the 11 year old (Ephraim) was at some innocent kiddie birthday party in the daytime. He was in a back alleyway at 1 AM at a party with tons of gang members.
- Marthinus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Welcome to our world here in South Africa. This stuff happens on a daily basis, only thing is we can not talk about it so freely as you do. Over here if you do not agree with the ruling party you are a racist.
- mrcpu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That 11 year old was sitting outside on a fence by the street around midnight in a neighborhood that is rotten with gang crime. Personally, my own children wouldn't have been sitting outside like that... but hey, that's just me.
- Waiting2awake, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13Actually I would say it is because the mothers look at their kids as revenue - the fathers look at the mothers as a status symbol/revenue and whenever anyone tries to actually help the cries of racism fly and more money(revenue) gets thrown at the community so that they stop screaming race, which obviously re-enforces the initial looks.

- lansuggs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Violence aside, I think its funny the picture they have is of the entire province of BC (Icl. Alberta). Either they think people won't know where Vancouver is and want to know, or that is the only picture of Vancouver they had on file!
- mrfish, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well Canada, it's so hard to miss.

joking aside, this is pretty ***** up. - DWatch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Anyone that takes anything that was in a Roger Moore movie as 'truth' is seriously retarded. Moore is a total flake and doesn't show the other side of any story, nor does he do any _real_ investigation asside from the few sources that agree with his viewpoints. He completely distorts some small half-truth, blowing it out of proportion, and ignores any evidence to the contrary. This guy should be nominated for an oscar for 'most lies in a single film' or something.
- aedes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, I agree. Anyone that believes something from a Roger Moore movie is retarded. Especially if the movies in question are from the James Bond saga.
- contrite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I thought he meant Michael Moore, but you're right - James Bond movies are incredibly biased
- napsack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You don't even know who you're talking about. Are you just repeating things you've read about Moore? If you wish to discredit/disprove someone at least know their name.

- dirtyfratboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure that's the only way this type of story will reach the frontpage. People see SHOCKING! and it actually works on them. Because of them, papers like the National Enquirer still exist.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It's nice to see this being done to you guys. It's done tot eh US on a regular basis.
- geneticlemon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0That's unfortunate ... I was looking to Canada as my safe haven. Now where will I go? Spokane? :(
- frsrblch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1The part sticking out on the right side is still good, but it'll be hard to find work. The stuff in the middle, where it's really flat, is still good, but housing costs are starting to rise... and you may need to know something about Louis Riel to fit in. The stuff on the far left side, and the parts around that bit that sticks down into the states are the parts that are going downhill. Now if you want a nice place to live, look no further than the rocky bit on the left side. Lots of trees and rocks and dirt and such, really nice there.

- laserjobs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Asian gang shooting. This is not uncommon for Vancouver. I have walked into a late night Asian restaurant in Vancouver and watched a deal taking place. The open suitcase on the table is normally a sign something is up.

Gotta thank American pot users (and the government that criminalises it) for this!- DWatch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Or...you can blame the Canadian pot users, and their government that criminalizes it.... why the hell does every violent act on the north American continent result from something that happens in the states? Take some responsibility. People are ***** up everywhere you go. Canadians too.
- jcm267, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well I'm from America, and I think the relatively lax drug laws in BC coupled with the more strict laws down here have created a good environment for large scale criminal enterprises up there.

- Piewnisher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I live a few blocks away from where this happened and have even eaten there once. Frankly, I'm not surprised there was a shooting there. It was a pretty sketchy restaurant that probably has gang ties.
The bigger issue here is the growing drug problem in Vancouver. Mayor Sam Sullivan is doing nothing to get addicts off the streets and will most likely just ship them away for the Olympics in 2010. Furthermore, the ports seem to be a drug super highway which is seeding this type of crime.- cramd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I recall seeing something about our ports on the news a while back. They said that over 60% of people working there had criminal convictions, and/or ties to gangs. It is crazy to think that the drug superhighway to Canada is manned by criminals and gangs.
- feebie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I am not sure if I remember correctly, but isn't this the same restaurant that had a major robbery a few months back? And if I'm not mistaken, there were shots fired at that robbery as well. It seems like a troubled spot.

- NickGe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0This is really sad. And it's far from the first. Living in Ottawa a few years back the same exact thing happened at a Bubble Tea place near where I lived. It seems the big cities in Canada are getting more and more violent (more American)?

- xtr3m, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Not justifying the killing, but the attack was "targeted," meaning the killed were involved somehow. The restaurant's workers weren't harmed. So I wouldn't call this "senseless." That would be storming McDonald's at noon and spraying everyone with bullets.
This attack happened at 4:30AM. Earlier that day the owners installed surveillance cameras and put a notice about it so they knew that something was about to come. - scott12087, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What people don't realize when they say "of course there are gangs and crime in Canada, there's crime everywhere", is that this enforces the point that having this article on digg should be getting across. Many people in other countries (for example, the US) don't realize that Canada isn't this happy, gun-free, gang-free country. Some people will say that it used to be like that, but the truth is, it never was. Sure, it's worse than it used to be, and compared to the rest of the world it's fantastic, but it's a real eye-opener when one of the safest countries in the world makes the news for something like this.
- cdnbambam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Alternative Headline: Canada so safe two murders is international news
- imaclatchie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Indeed!
A few years back there was a bank teller killed by a gunman in Canada, don't even remember what city it was. This happened in spring, like May or something. This was the first bank teller killing in Canada for over 10 years up to then. On the flip side - Los Angeles had multiple bank teller murders that year already... it was only May!
- this gang related killing business is rooted in oriental gangs in Asia, it's been imported.
- imaclatchie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Indeed!
- yoshimaroka, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm guessing some Chinese gang from the name of the restaurant; Fortune Happiness Restaurant, can't get more communist than that.
- ryanscott, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5i used to pass this place on the way home from school everyday. and if my memory serves me correct its right on the out skirts of china town and not far from the major drug street. - manofrenown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It's pretty far from the official "china town". Broadway and Fraser ish, which is pretty sketchy anyway....but more sketchy in the"crazy homeless guy" sense than the gun shooting sense.
- feebie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, this isn't really near China Town. It's on the other side of the bridge.
- Deguello, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4Dear Dear Canada...
As "Decider" of the free world, I am disheartened to learn you have aquired "guns". I am afraid I am going to have to bring "Democracy" to your fine country of Maple Syrup, Mounties, and Bryan Adams. America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our people, every nation in every region now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.Everywhere that freedom stirs, let tyrants fear. Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward, and freedom will be defended.
