- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -4/+47I'm on the side of Rowling on this one. Why would you want to put out an HP lexicon when Rowling already has one in the works? Maybe trying to make a quick buck by riding the hype for the official version?
- jamie06260, on 11/11/2007, -4/+29Better off to let Rowling work on it herself, develop it the way that she wants to, and include her ideas previously unknown to everyone, than to have some corporate big-wig ruin it for all the fans.
- TripcodeMel, on 11/12/2007, -2/+19The Weaselys divide asexually, like bacteria.
- ZigVicious, on 11/11/2007, -5/+21Ron Weasley FTW!
- carpespasm, on 11/12/2007, -5/+19Yes, she knows exactly what the readers need and care to know about the series. Like who Dumbledore slept with and whether we was the giver or the receiver.
- subterfuge, on 11/11/2007, -2/+15yeah. this reminds me of when rita skeeter rushed to publish that biography of dumbledore. even though it wasnt the greatest writing, she still posted first.
- LifeIsARhythm, on 11/13/2007, -3/+14when did she start going by Row?
- qpn6ph9q, on 11/11/2007, -1/+8Row = Quarrel (British vernacular)
Rhymes with "How" - placidified, on 11/11/2007, -2/+9Does any of the lexicons, Ark's or Rowling's go into more detail of the sexual orientation of ALL the characters ?
- meririm, on 11/12/2007, -1/+7I'm on Rowling side here. I mean... Her works, her rights; and as much as I respect the lexicon for the information they collected and organized on their site, a paper publication of it is another matter. HP is a story, not a free font.
Actually, I am quite stupid, too, because I don't understand how things could even go this far. I mean, lawsuit? In my own perfect little dream world, before starting to work on such a project, one would ask the author permission, and only begin the actual publication stuff after getting a nice "OK, you can" signed on some legal paper. Did the lexicon do that? Because if they did, well, I'm lost. If they didn't, too bad for them. - daeggman, on 11/11/2007, -0/+5Correction: she's suing them for trying to publish and make money off of a book based on HER intellectual property.
- Angmar, on 11/11/2007, -2/+7JK has used the Lexicon to help remember some small details before, but the Lexicon can't make money off of her books, there lies the problem.
- qpn6ph9q, on 11/11/2007, -1/+6Rowling has admitted many times she has volumes of backstory to support the main plot. Dumbledore being gay does explain some aspects of the main story better, for example his "infatuation" with Grindlewald and their stormy departure; and why he is single. But with the target audience in mind there was little or no need to explain sexual orientation in the narrative, IMO.
- qpn6ph9q, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5If it's anything like her first post-Potter book she will donate the proceeds of her Encyclopedia to a charity, like the Children's Voice.
- EllimistX, on 11/11/2007, -1/+5I figured it meant argument, the way she uses it in the books...but now that you mention it, it could be a new nickname?
- darkspym7, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2She's getting greedy and becoming an attention-whore. The Lexicon deserves to publish its book.
- zachshmack, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Copyright is just one part of it. Can't the names of the original characters and places be trademarked?
- TekTrixter, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2From TFA: "Rowling had supported the Lexicon website, but she and Warner Bros said they saw a difference between fans publishing information for free on the internet, and selling it in the form of a book."
She *supported* the fan site, she wasn't worried about fans out-doing her. - EatingPie, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Rowling plans to release an encyclopedia and send all the profits to charity, which I fully support.
HOWEVER, I think both books can co-exist. The lexicon is derived info from the books and Interviews (the books, for example, never explain that Hermione's cat is a "gnarl."). A good reference book. But Rowlings Encyclopedia is expected to have further character details not revealed in the books or interviews.
I really doubt fans will forego the purchase of Rowlings encyclopedia with the Lexicon.
-Pie - BrokenBokken, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1I'm on Rowlings side, but does she really have to take it to court? Wouldn't a simple cease and decist letter have sufficed? The guy gave them a copy to see if it violated copyright. Why couldn't they have just said it does violate copyright? Sounds like the lawyers are trying to milk this for all it's worth.
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Courtesy and money don't often go hand-in-hand. I guess you could argue that the lexicon guy has been compiling material for his encyclopedia for years, while Rowling's people have just decided to compile theirs.
- darkspym7, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1HP Lexicon has been around for years, since the 1st book.
- hanginginthere, on 11/11/2007, -4/+5What is really stupid is that Rowling actually praised the site before for supplying HP fans all the facts and stuff in one convenient easy-to-find area, and now she sues them for it.
- meririm, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1I guess so, and I'm not really concerned about the legal aspect of the thing... I'm just wondering how such a long time fan managed to land himself in this mess. He would have saved himself the trouble if he had asked (and it doesn't look like he did, from the situation). And, while it wasn't a legal requirement, for someone who seems to respect the author's work, I think it would have been the... courteous thing to do?
- qpn6ph9q, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1I'd be interested how the whole Christianity thing links into the back story, I know Rowling has included many Christian references but I would have imagined the wizarding world would have some kind of a historical bias against Catholics in particular given the Church's propensity to burn witches and other pagans for centuries.
- clickmyface, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1And she'll be looking forward to it!
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2"Volumes of backstory"? Yeah, yeah. And Lucas claimed for years that he had the 3 new Star Wars movies planned out well in advance.
Sometimes backstory is written after the main story. Did Rowling really have it in mind for Dumbledore to be gay this entire time? Or was it some idea that found her fancy late in the process, like Lucas' midi-chlorians? - darkspym7, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1HP Lexicon has been around for years, since the 1st book.
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1I don't know about Britain, but the US is host to gazillions of "unauthorized guides" that all lick dew thirstily off of the leaves of the intellectual property oak. If the authors copy her text, that's not legal. If they use their own words to describe what's happening in her books and then cite her works as references, that should be perfectly legal. They can use her character names, too.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -3/+4encylopaedia? What the ***** kind of gibberish europeon spelling is that? BURIED FOR BEING EUROPEON.
- sd12013, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1(I got it!)
- stacky, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1Accuracy is not archaic.
- vervalsing, on 11/11/2007, -3/+4I wouldn't exactly call a fansite a "corporate big-wig", but yeah. It's her work, she should have the rights to sell her own encyclopedia to what she came up with.
- DarkDx, on 11/12/2007, -1/+1I wasn't the one that said dumbledore was gay (google it)
- GeckoSlayer, on 11/11/2007, -1/+1Well she's obviously going down to the river and having a rowing competition with the publishing company. Duh!
- jjcausey, on 11/11/2007, -3/+3Just so everyone knows all her proceeds for this book will be going to charity.
- gfunk84, on 11/11/2007, -1/+1I'm pretty sure you can copyright characters...
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -2/+2SATAN'S charity...
- kaemaril, on 11/11/2007, -1/+1You get a red thumb for not spelling "European" correctly in a comment complaining about spelling.
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -3/+3In that light, the whole outing thing doesn't seem that bad. When I first heard it, I thought she was just making some big publicity stunt.
- EmperorAwesome, on 11/11/2007, -2/+2I'd row that.
- starf, on 11/11/2007, -2/+1They're not trying to stop her.
- chillypacman, on 11/11/2007, -2/+1The encyclopedia is no more than just a bunch of passages taken from fan sites and edited to be in the form of an encyclopedia, it's essentially by the fans, for the fans and Rowling is doing a George Lucas by being a grouchy hag about it. Whats the matter rowling? Afraid your fans will do a better job than you?
- NSMike, on 11/11/2007, -2/+1Or they're secretly Catholic.
Every sperm is sacred... - NSMike, on 11/11/2007, -5/+4It's a world that consists of a few arcane locales in London, a giant castle school and a small town that has some affinity for pigs, warts, and honey liquor. It's not exactly big and expansive.
- Weather, on 11/12/2007, -7/+6Were they downloading music illegally on their iphones while at a ron paul rally?
- tehknotte, on 11/11/2007, -2/+1Yes it is because doesnt cliff notes have analysis and stuff like that? In this case it just seems to be a collection of info from the book. plus i think there was gonna be an official one from which the proceeds would go to charity.
- HubrisDeadPan, on 11/12/2007, -6/+3How is she greedy when she's already richer than british royalty? Are you retarded? You don't take someone else's intellectual work and then catalog it for sale so you can profit from it. It doesn't matter how 'hard they worked' on organizing info from her books, they never deserve to cash in on someone else's property.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -8/+5Harry Potter sucks and Dumbledore knows it.
- bovox, on 11/11/2007, -8/+5I can't wait to see Rowling's enclopedia entry for Dumbledore and his secret life as a gay man. City and school libraries in entire swaths of the South will ban the book.
