That's not racist, he's just stating the truth. Mexican police are still Mexicans, and they are stealing from people. It's going to be hard to confront that as a problem when you label it as racist. And it's pretty assanine to be blaming the tourists for getting robbed and not the police. - diegoferreyra, on 10/11/2007, -3/+51"Robbed by the Police in Mexico!"
It's pretty damn obvious none of you have been to Peru... - gn0stik, on 10/11/2007, -4/+49Hitler considered germans different than other anglo saxons. Doesn't mean they were.
Mexicans are native central, and north american and spanish.
Hispanic is a term that denotes you have spanish ancestry. And it wasn't invented by americans.
La Raza is an ignorant racial superiority group, who for some reason have taken it upon themselves to declare themselves "The Race"
Most mexicans I know think of them as white people think of skinheads. And they call themselves HISPANIC (including my son's godfather). And are angry that they make them look bad.
When in ANY foreign country, it's imperative to be careful. Stupid mistakes can cost you everything.
If you are careful, you can go and do what you went for, and have a good time.
If you are one of these people who want to go to mexico and experience the "authentic mexican experience" when you are not an "authentic mexican citizen" expect what you get.
Dugg me for saying what needs to be said, if you wish. I could care less. However ignorance goes both ways. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -48/+88so this guy is surprised that he got ripped of by the cops in what is essentially a third world country? mexicans (real ones not the ones here) steal from american tourists, thats to be expected. hope the guy wasn't stupid enough to be carrying all of his cash on him.
- AzDraon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+43Uhm, no ***** this would happen. A couple rules when going to Mexico.
1) Never go anywhere by yourself.
2) Never keep more then what you need on you in cash, but always keep at least $20 if you need to bribe a cop. (Seriously, I live in Arizona and have many friends who have been locked up for a few days because they did not have $20 on them to slip the cops when pulled over or stopped)
3) Don't drink the water. No, seriously. Don't do it. - PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -38/+72barring the grossly racist and overtly douchey comment above me, the story is no surprise, and the author should get out more and he'd know that Mexican police are some of the most corrupt in the world.
As a Mexican living in LA, i'll often travel across the border to visit the beautiful Baja coastline, i'll occasionally stop in Tiajuana for some on some of my retarded friends' requests. Police in TJ are NOTORIOUS for stopping drunk american party goers for questionable offenses (touching a girls ass, being drunk in the streets, etc) and demand money or threaten jail. The cops are usually content with around 60 bucks, but if they find more on you, they'll want it all. If you have no money, you're SOL, and it's off to a Mexican jail for you (don't go to a mexican jail). Which is why i always recommend to never carry more than $60 dollars in your pocket, and to keep the rest of your money WELL hidden. - jameskong15, on 10/11/2007, -14/+46@retardsclaimingracism
When did Mexican become a race? - spillingvoid, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29I live in Texas and have gone over to Mexico many a time before. Couple quick lessons; First learn enough Spanish to be able to say to the Police, "No drugs here friend, how much to convince you", another line would be, "How much for a Pass to drive on the road for one day, $40.00 OK."(actually had this happen to me and a friend). Second thing to know, never use a credit card in Mexico, just don't do it. Third, if someone doesn't try to rip you off in some way while your in Mexico, you must look Mexican.
- MrRockabilly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23This is so true, me and a few buddies went down over a weekend. We drove his Suburban down there, and sure enough we were pulled over. The mexican federal officers made us follow them a ways down the road and pulled us into an Alley. He then very calmly walked over to the car and said, "I really like your truck . . . what are we gonna do about that? I can not let such a pretty truck go for free."
He then asked us to get out of the car while he tested the A/C, Radio, and various other things. He said no less than 100 from all of us . . . or we would be walking home for the drugs he will find in the truck. Needless to say, we all paid and have not gone back since. - fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -9/+29@electricfuneral

Their behavior offends not only you, but us as a society ... that being said, I'm one of the majority of Mexicans who will do nothing else than to welcome you when you come into our country and explore it beyond the border towns ...
I'm also offended by the way you are expressing yourselves about us, -- third rate ***** hole, kill all mexicans, ALL mexicans are corrupt --, this kind of racial hate says more about you as Americans than us as Mexicans ... I for one, would never use these kind of words for anyone. - jameskong15, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22@lava

As a Mexican, you have no idea how to spell Tijuana - Revan01, on 10/11/2007, -17/+33Americans steal from tourists too...
is that racism? everyone steals from tourists; they are easy targets - fauxXenophanes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14
Clue #1 - When you go to the local, upscale mall to find police w/machine guns in hand, you might be in a rough joint! - SilentSpyder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Even hispanics get robbed by cops down there. My family is Colombian. My cousin is a marine, last year he went to Tijuana and the same thing happen to them. He was walking around with his friends drunk and cops pulled stopped him and gave him the money or jail routine.
- totallyAMAZING, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Wow, slap a big DUH on this one.
- bigfinger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11We got robbed at some kind of road block in the middle of no where in Mexico late 2005, they asked our passports where were we going and went over the car. They let us go for $200.00 and took our camcorder. Was pretty scary but none of us wanted to come up missing or find out what would happen if we didn't pay.
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11People get robbed all the time in Latin America. I've been living and travelling in Central America for almost a year now, I've been quite lucky in that I've only had a camera stolen. In New York I had a laptop stolen, so far Central America's treating me better than North America.
A month or so ago I took a friend out for a big night out and he wandered off at 4am in the capitol San Jose, and got his dumb ass robbed at gunpoint. Just before New Years I was at the Caribbean with some friends, and some Brits we met bought a few grams of coke and the dealer sold them out to the cops - the cops fleeced them for a couple hundred bucks and the dealer gets his share and his drugs back.
If you're going to travel do it sensibly. Don't carry much cash at any given time, don't flash it around and don't dress or act like you make 30 - 100x what the people around you make. Just $20 can be the equivelent of a week's wage and you are a target, but moreso if you stand out.
The same rules apply for anywhere in the world, not just Mexico and Latin America. Tourists are good targets for robbing. - ZPWeeks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10"different" pronunciations?
You must be one of those people who thinks that Jesus was an English-speaking white guy, right? - jiggleflop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Man, its so bad down there, I dread just getting near the border.
My friend Juan is first gen. Mexican American but many of his family live in Mexico.
He was telling me about his uncle, a Mexican citizen in Mexico, who was kidnapped.
They paid 10k for him to be released and he barely made it alive.
After the kidnappers got the money, they told one guy to take Juan's uncle to the river and shoot him, but the guy lost heart, told him to fall in the river and play dead when the gun went off.
I have seen to much and heard even worse to ever respect Mexico as a country.
I know some Mxicans who went to Cancun and got robbed by the cops.
There isn't any charity, they couldn't buy food for three days until a relative flew down and gave them money at their hotel.
Everything is corrupt, you cant trust anyone, no wonder millions want to come to the US. - dylanrush, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11When you label people as racist for becoming angry about this, you are hindering a lot of progress. How can you confront the issue when you bitch at people for acknowledging it as a cultural problem?
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Just because a government is incompetent doesn't mean that it's citizens are inherently bad. I'm not seeing your logic.
- cameronk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Only when the police and government stop robbing from the people can Mexico become a truly modern wealthy country. With so much mineral wealth and so many industrious, educated, people it is a shame that a minority of corrupt officials impoverish everyone else.
- digitalrogue, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9You people who say you've been to Mexico because you and some buddies went drinking in TJ or the Tex-Mex border need to know something. You've never REALLY been to Mexico. TJ has one sole function: take money from drunk *****' Americans and people who want to spend their money on panchos and ashtrays. Mexicans don't even go to Tijuana... You want to see Mexico? Go about 8 hours SE and go see Jalisco, or some other Mexican state. Why? Because not all of Mexico is some ***** "3rd world country" as you so captivatingly put it. It's called a sweeping generalization and is piss-poor, lazy logic. Ever seen Mexico City? I doubt it.
In the same vein, not all Mexican immigrants are lazy, good-for-nothing leaches on society. My girlfriend's family immigrated from Mexico and built, from NOTHING, a million-dollar manufacturing/wholesale/retail company. They pay taxes, put their kids through private catholic school, and live the American Dream better than most "Americans" do. So stop your ***** hating because your spoiled ass isn't getting what you want in life. Daddy can't carry you forever. Get a ***** education and a better job. Stop blaming others for your own shortcomings in life. Think for yourselves instead of buying into this collective-mind *****.
Final note: Mexicans, Salvadorians, Brazilians, people from the US.... we're all from America... North America, Central America, and South America... One big continuous land mass that we have decided to put a fence around and hide behind while we bomb the ***** out of everyone who dares to oppose our egos. We are in for a rude awakening someday. - monospaced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Having grown up in California (with a lot of Mexicans, mind you) and going to college in San Diego (frequent visits to Baja) I know many Americans who cross the border each way all the time.
Every single person I know who makes the trip a few times has had a bad experience with the Mexican police. In fact, this guys' story is pretty pathetic in that all he lost were a few bucks. It can easily get much worse. - dioh10, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11What do you expected from the ***** country in the whole world? It's a common practice, even they pull that ***** on mexicans too. By the way I'm Mexican, and I don't like many things about my country, specially this sort of thing.
- Cam_86, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I cant understand why people still choose to go to Mexico... The Canadian press has slammed the Mexican govt. consistently for the last 4 years, for all the Canadian tourist deaths. *****, a elderly couple was robbed and murdered, and the Mexican police blamed a couple of 20 year old Canadian girls who were staying at another local resort even though it was all but obvious it was one of the hotel staff who just so happened to have vanished the same day they were killed.
Its an incompetent corrupt country. I don't care how beautiful the scenery is, it isn't worth saving 20% on a vacation over a place like Jamaica, when the risk of getting robed/raped/murdered is so much higher. - Millsee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm one of the lucky people who've had the change to travel around the world extensively, and without a shadow of a doubt, Mexico was the worst and I mean WORST place I've ever had the misfortune to step into. Nowhere should still be third world now, but with police and government being that corrupt, and no chance of the money doing them any good, you have to say to yourself "***** the lot of 'em". Well, that's how I felt about the place after I escaped it's filthy claws.
'A hopeless ***** ***** hole' is my best attempt at describing Mexico City. - JeanInMontana, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Story buried as lame, more like a spam post for your blog. Why wait til now to tell all?
@vicissidude you said "No, I don't buy the "bad people are everywhere" *****. You don't see this kind of corruption in the US. People aren't pulled over here so the cops can steal their money or whatever they have on them.
Even during the depression, when no one had money, did US cops pull this kind of *****. So no, I don't buy the other excuse that they do it because the Mexican cops are poor and the gringos are rich."
During the depression was one of the most notorious times for being able to pay off the cops ......where the hell have you been???
This kind of corruption is still everywhere in the US. Don't kid yourself. What do you think "on the take" means? Cops here pull over women and force them into sexual acts. Cops here pull people over and take money from them, they have a thing known as a speed trap and have for years!!! Cops here have been paid to look the other way for all sorts of crime. Also known to plant stuff on people so they can arrest them.
Come out into the real world. - Jagdwulfe, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14One more reason not to ever go to Mexico. Another reason to build the wall and put the military on the border.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10ya i cant wait to have mexican cops patrolling our interstate (international) highways after the new nafta super highways are built
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Mexican police have been corrupt long before Shrub took office.
- AbsurdParadox, on 10/11/2007, -10/+15Every year here in the United States, armed thugs take about 40% of my earnings. Same day, people will learn that people robbing you at gun point, and beaurocrats threatening you with violence if you don't give them your money are the same thing.

No Doubt. If the story was, "Robbed by Peruvian police in Mexico" Then we would be in real trouble. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I just read through 100+ personal stories about being robbed in Mexico... and people still go there why?
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I have no problems with Mexicans coming in legally. I do have problem with them and their Aztlan and Mecha movements wanting to reclaim California and other states for La Raza.
- Uranium118, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"Uhm, no ***** this would happen. A couple rules when going to Mexico."
1- DON'T GO TO MEXICO - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8***** Mexico I'll never go there again after being throw in jail for kidnapping after horsing around on a beach with some friends. I was in a cell across from another cell where the guys had weapons and were smoking joints. There was ***** on the ceiling and a hole for a toilet. One culligen water bottle that i'm sure didn' t come from a culligen man. They let me out for 20.00 US dollers and took my shirt, which i traded with the hostile cell for ciggarrettes with my pod mates so they wouldn't ***** me up! I don't even smoke! I did that day! This happened in Rocky Point and it took almost 20 hours to get out of jail for horsing around on a beach! Worst experience ever I still want to kill the Mexican police and the fat glutinous jailer. They had a Marine in there to in the next cell and they were extorting his family for thousands of dollers. The mom was crying and he just kept lying to them telling them he was going to let him out. Then saying he was going to put him in a worse place, the prison where he would be ass raped! He said he got into a traffic accident and accidently rearended a lady. He even had insurance! DO NOT GO TO MEXICO IF YOU ARE A WHITE PERSON! TRUE STORY!
- Jambi, on 10/11/2007, -8/+13Hispanic is a ***** American term? And all this time I thought it was an easy way to differentiate people by the language they spoke.
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Nothing wrong with what I want. I did not say keep them from immigrating legally. All I said was keep a wall between us and them with troops on the border. Cuts back on the drugs, human trafficing and other problems. Also we can use the military to rescue Americans illegally detained. ;)
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Cheap booze, easy women and no drinking age. :)
- thatmusicjunkie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I live on the border.
You should ALWAYS carry AT LEAST $20 in case you're stopped by the police over there.
You DO NOT want to go to a Mexican prison, trust me. - shootdashit, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10word. they love stealing your stash. a guy i know who was a jersey cop said if you were cool, they'd keep enough on you to bust ya and take the rest for themselves. and if you gave them a hard time, they'd leave enough to bust ya, beat the ***** out of you, and then take your ***** for themselves. this was in the late 80's, but there's corruption everywhere, even in the good ol' rich united states. so why wouldn't cops from a porr ass country like mexico do much of thethe same?
- merrickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Are you serious? This story was dugg to the front page. Things like this have happened to me almost every other time I went to Mexico. Good news however. We can beat it. Once, my friends and I were driving to Rosarito when we were pulled over for 'speeding'. We hadn't done anything wrong but decided to accept the ticket from the policia. haha he kept telling us, 'okay I'm going to give you a ticket.' He was stalling forever. 'I'm about to write your ticket now....' He stared at us for almost an entire 30 or 40 seconds of awkward silence before he treads back to his hooptie and drives off. The bribe he was waiting for was never given. Travel in numbers... the cops there wont usually mess with you unless they outnumber you.
- AbsurdParadox, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Yeah, cause those wanting a better life in the US are the cause for the problems in Mexico, LOL.
- bluegender, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4What do you guys expect? "Mexican police are still Mexicans, and they are stealing from people." WTF!?? I'm just gonna PRETEND that wasn't races, and even so that doesn't make sense. Basically because they are Mexican they steal?
Mexican police are corrupt because drug lords pretty much own them. They are there to serve the drug lords first, and be cops second. That's a pretty tough spot to be in. And you are all forgetting the most important factor in this story: IT'S TIJUANA!!!! It's like riding into Long Beach on a bike at night and crying about getting your bike stolen.
On another note, it's sad all you people who go to "Mexico" only go as far as TJ, one of the ***** places in Mexico. It is a totally different experience if you actually travel. - jessdub99, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Guess he forgot to write his essay.
