- KMye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+282You would think replacing the tag with one from a less expensive TV of the same brand might be a better plan of action.
- nickerbocker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+171You would think struggling to lift it up onto the scanner at the self-checkout would draw some attention.
- TheAkolyte, on 10/11/2007, -2/+162Imagine the guy behind him buying a 1000$ bag of m&m.
- endustry, on 10/11/2007, -14/+140Sanyo's should be $5 anyway.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/11/2007, -7/+110The only sad thing is that you still ended up paying $5 for 24. Who's the real loser here?
- pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -6/+103yes, but he's a walmart shopper.
- TheWalkingDude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+86Walmart is expensive; I just bought a $984 bag of chips.
- inspecality, on 10/11/2007, -5/+84I've alerted the Berkeley police, Brett.
- jackwaters, on 10/11/2007, -34/+112Can't blame the guy for trying.....
- brettville, on 10/11/2007, -47/+114Pretty weak effort. I once bought a whole season of 24 for five bucks by switching the tags with one of the DVDs from the bargain bin (I think it was Ernest Goes to Jail). Then I just chatted up the cashier while she was working and she didn't even flinch when it rang up as "DVD $4.88." Take that Wal-Mart.
- AnteChronos, on 10/11/2007, -22/+82For the record brettville, you're an *****. What you did was no better than shoplifting. You're a common thief. You want to stick it to Walmart? Then don't shop there. But stealing merchandise and then bragging about it? What the hell is wrong with people?
- TrancePX, on 10/11/2007, -3/+54How could that possibly not work?
- ForlornHope, on 10/11/2007, -1/+50Ditch the blogspam *****, here's an original link: http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2007/06/28/ap3869061.html (Probably not the one the blogspam eventually would have led to, since one of the links in their chain was broken...).
- sparrowkc, on 11/03/2007, -0/+38I got my house this way.
- MrEguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+34Oh, shut-up. TheAkolyte's post was funny. Don't fcuking hyperanalyze it.
- inspecality, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33That's Wal-Mart's CRAZY everyday low prices. Shop Wal-Mart today.
- yensed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31He should have at least went for a better tv.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24The report I heard on this had him being a bit more clever. His procedure was, according to that report:
(1) Buy the TV, at the correct price. Take it home.
(2) Come back to the store, with the receipt from step #1.
(3) Buy *another* of the same model TV, using the price switching trick.
(4) If stopped by security on the way out and asked to show the receipt, show the receipt from step #1.
If that had worked (which it didn't, because security noticed the timestamp on the receipt was off), then there would be one more step:
(5) Bring back one of the TVs and get a refund, using the receipt from #1. - nubbler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24You "bought" it?
Wouldn't the correct term for that action be "stealing"? - theholycow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23I thought those self-service scanners weigh the item and compare against the item's expected weight. The article says that security personnel witnessed it and that's how he was caught. What gives?
- samdu, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28As "The Blooms" said, Yes, yes you CAN blame this ass hole for trying to steal equipment. While you kids may see Wal-Mart as some vast, nameless, faceless monolithic organization, it's really a group of employees that are paid the market wages for what they do. Any time someone cheats the system, money is taken out of these peoples' pockets. I'm no fan of Wal-Mart. But thieves are worse than any corporate greed that Wal-Mart exhibits. There is absolutely NO way to defend what this ass hole did. None. And if you try, you're as big a scumbag as the thief himself.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25You didn't stick it to Walmart. You stuck it to every law-abiding customer that now has to pay more to cover the cost of your shoplifting. Walmart simply factors in the cost of shoplifting into their markups. Even worse, you seem to think your shoplifting is worth bragging about. You're an *****.
- airwalkery2k, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24XD
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -4/+19Oh yeah! I once killed a whole family of illegal immigrants by switching their kidneys with a couple loaves of fresh bread! (I think it was Pepperidge Farm 7 grain bread). Then, I just chatted up with their friends and they didn't even flinch as I charged them $500 each for the "amnesty" surgeries. Take that Mexico.
- Quag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Is.....is that a Keenan and Kel reference? No way.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18No matter how you try to justify your actions, you're still a thief. The fact that you're not ashamed makes you a douche too.
- merkle, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19i thought of that first. just didn't have the balls to do it.
- Ryosen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17No, it was theft, plain and simple. You can rationalize it any way that you want but the end result is still the same: you are a thief.
- georgetds, on 10/11/2007, -10/+22I hope people are not actually stupid enough to think that when the steal from them, Wal-Mart suffers. Do you seriously think Wal-Mart lets the cost of theft come from their pocketbook? Seriously? Every one of you moron's who steals from these box stores only make it so they get more devious themselves about how they get money out of the pockets of those who are honest enough to pay for things.
Man, the thieves who think they can justify their actions with stupid excuses like "I stuck it to Wal-Mart". As if they only would steal from Wal-Mart. You really want to look like a hero? Steal from Wal-Mart and give it to the poor. At least then you can also pretend you are Robin Hood. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15I cant even buy 3 of the same cheap item buy putting 2 in the bag and running the first one across the scanner 3 times, a walmart employee runs over like i am stealing something, because i didnt run each 1 of the same item across. I have no idea how this wouldnt get attention. I think he would of been better off finding a walmart vest laying around, and have someone else walk with him up to the tv, have the guy with a walmart vest put the tv in the card, and wheel it out the garden section, ohh yeah, score, i think that would work
- wordsofwisedumb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12In actuality, he's not buying anything from them...
- scispaz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Ah, resorting to brand status oneupmanship on digg. Are you proud of spending more than you needed to?
- angle45media, on 10/11/2007, -12/+23Going to Wal-Mart is like going to the DMV...you're going to see all the freaks, and the fat ladies with the bare footed snot nosed kids who run around with kool-aid stains on their mini-wife beaters.
That being said, as a general rule all the marts suck. K-mart, Wal-mart, am-pm mini mart etc., freaks and fat ladies, man I'm telling you. - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -9/+20Yeah, technically stores don't have the right to check your receipt... and it is a waste of time... once you payed at the register, the items are your property, and not subject to searches by them or even the cops I would think... XD
It bugs me at stores like Tiger Direct... they always have a rent-a-cop at the door waiting to check your receipt... and trying to deny it to him... could prove dangerous... XD Then again they have signs at the register to keep your receipt out, and the cop is only like 10 ft from the registers... he doesn't check over everything... just takes ur receipt and makes a mark on it with his highlighter... what a job... XD guess it's not THAT much of a hassle...
but at places like walmart or bestbuy... i would never get my wallet back out for some teenager to check.... XD - ryansmith18, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11You were able to find the block button on this new comment system?
- GRVeee2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It could have been a BIG bag of M&M's!
- Kronos6948, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Not to take away from your comment, but I have to disagree. I was in a Target here in Philly that had Rayovac multi pack batteries (all different sizes) marked for 8.99. I grabbed a box of the 9 volt batteries, and when I went to purchase them, they came up as 10.99. I complained nicely to the cashier, and she didn't believe me. She called over an assistant (who turned out to be quite rude and ignorant towards me during this whole thing), and we walked over together to see the price tag. I showed her the price tag, and the ENDCAP ADVERTISEMENT FOR ALL RAYOVAC BATTERIES, and she still fought me. I ended up having to get the manager. In the end, for my troubles, I got a $5 gift card.
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -9/+17wtf is XD? Is it some foreign language abbreviation for asshat or something?
- daRoach, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8These thefts do have an effect on employees. I can tell you from my own experience working at Best Buy; last year the biggest focus in our store was "shrink" (which, in a nutshell, is loss due to theft). The policy is that if the store can keep shrink percentage below a certain amount every part time employee would get a pretty nice bonus. Full time employees would get a better bonus and so fourth up the ladder. Being a part timer, this bonus would have been about a month and a half of pay. As this is the only bonus available to part timers we worked pretty hard with the Assets Protection guys to keep shrink low and had been pretty successful at keeping it below the percentage we needed to. Towards the end of the year there was a blackout, and lowlife customers made out with tens of thousands of dollars of merchandise in around an hour before order was restored. Our shrink success rate plummeted and nobody got their bonus and the managers pretty much brushed any comments or complaints on the issue aside. Needless to say many of us were, and still are, pissed. I have seen morale drop so low in my department they don't even care when managers come complaining that margin sales are low and services are not being offered. That's another thing that drops when thievery is committed, customer service.
- ecorona, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13What you really need to do is buy a really expensive TV and stick a sticker of a really cheap TV. Get that $2800 HDTV for $984.
- clyde2801, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8If you're going to be a thief, at least be honest about it. Quit lying to us, and yourself, about 'sticking it to wal-mart'.
Maybe I could break in your home and steal your computer, TV and the like. Since you should have homeowners or renters insurance, I'd really just be sticking it to the insurance company right? I'd be helping you get new electronics, wouldn't I? Your buying new electronics would help people in the manufacturing and distribution fields, correct?
I could tell myself that, but you-and everyone else-would call me a scumbag, a burglar and a thief. - Disease, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8A first on Digg, but not related at all to the story.
- Duhitsmichael, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I like having you blocked.
- chazzbro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8And all the wonderful contributors who are so proud of their thievery,,,should be buried as dopes.
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8sideways laugh emote... and sorry I overused it... I was in a rather giggly mood at the time I posted that... lol^_^;; if u catch my drift...
- whataboutdave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8The internet, bro. You're using it right now.
Newegg FTW. - AnonymousCow, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12I'm curious, why do you say that? Over the past 13 years, the only problem I've ever experienced with the 7 Sanyos that my family or I have owned is that the oldest started to occasionally add a little fuzz to the audio. The models range from 19" to 32" and "curved-screen" to HD LCD. Three of those were replacements in the aftermath of a lightning strike through the coax and one is awaiting donation; we don't actually have seven, that would be silly :-P
- Whaines, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Uh....won't they notice that the machine didn't remind them to ask for id?
- screensnot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Good point. Looks like a BS story to me.
- Akronos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Digg them down, then it should appear next to their names. I see one next to LukyJay's name.
