- inactive, on 11/16/2009, -31/+555But it's fine to eat piglets, because you've been conditioned to think of some animals as food and others as pets.
There's no other difference.
I understand this will be buried for tweaking your conscience. - DevinWatson, on 11/16/2009, -9/+328That's not racist at all...
- inactive, on 11/16/2009, -2/+238An interesting theory, although dogs, cats and other common pets for Americans and Europeans are considered quite delicious by many Asian cultures.
Indians, I'm told, fail to appreciate how delicious cows are.
The list could go on. It's all cultural conditioning. - Charlesbian, on 11/16/2009, -2/+193Beautiful Black women! Looking for wholesome men to date! NO WHITE MEN! THESE ARE WIVES! NOT SLAVES!
- badqat, on 11/16/2009, -8/+123There's a local urban legend that's been circulating for some time here that upon inspection by the health department, a large number of frozen cat carcasses was discovered at a certain restaurant. However, since they were for "personal" use, there were no sanctions against the restaurant.
All I know is that the food there is delicious. - NightEmber79, on 11/16/2009, -2/+103*****-A YOU CRAIGSRIST!!!!!!!!
- PowderedToasty, on 11/16/2009, -2/+96It's probably more about herd animals being easier to raise on farms. Imagine a farm full of dogs, it would be madness.
- DohCanadian, on 11/16/2009, -5/+93THATS your definition of ***** up? You haven't been around the internets very long have you.
- Joomal, on 11/16/2009, -1/+68I wouldn't eat dogs because I'm a white dude on North American soil, born and raised. However put yourself in their shoes. Imagine you went over to India and someone was selling baby cows (veal.) How good would a hamburger taste if you haven't had one in 10 years? You'd be looking at that cow thinking, man, I could cut that thing up and have burgers for years! The locals would be looking at you and thinking you're some sort of psycho for wanting to eat a cow.
- fluidfoundation, on 11/16/2009, -20/+87You think it's by accident the more delicious animals became livestock while the other ones became pets?
I'm sure if you taste them both you'd be able to tell the difference. - mkriss5681, on 11/16/2009, -3/+65If I was starving to death I'd eat a dog, and I love dogs. How is it any better or worse that eating cows or pigs?
- Shitokki, on 11/16/2009, -19/+80That's some ***** UP ***** right there.
- ilmickeyli, on 11/16/2009, -0/+55Why did he post that ***** in m4t? LOL
- hangglide, on 11/16/2009, -4/+57I am a westerner who enjoys traveling. I have eaten dog before in the Philippines where they enjoy it as a traditional birthday food (piglets are for weddings there). They are both delicious although I would never think of eating it in the west because of the cultural taboo. Meat is meat and meat is good.
- GrandZooby, on 11/16/2009, -2/+54@fluidfoundation, I think the key distinction is that most of the animals eaten in the west are herbivores. Pasture plants grow pretty easily, so the food for your food is easy to get. Dogs and cats tend to be carnivores, so you have to find meat to feed your meat, which itself probably herbivorous. It's probably easier to skip the step and just eat the herbivores.
I suspect too that large slow-moving herbivores probably have meat that is more tender and easier to cook and eat. That's just my guess though. - dogfood, on 11/16/2009, -2/+53Koreans, Chinese, and Vietnamese do eat dog, but only specific breeds that are bred for deliciousness, just like any other type of edible livestock.
And I've tried Korean and Chinese dog dishes, and yes they are tasty. - TimtheTaxMan, on 11/16/2009, -0/+48Hey, stop taking sense! We only eat ugly animals around here. Cute = free pass.
- JonTheGoose, on 11/16/2009, -0/+44The filet meow is particularly tasty.
- bradleyland, on 11/16/2009, -2/+42Humans possess an interesting adaptive trait: we can grow to like (crave) just about any food that doesn't cause an adverse digestive reaction. In other words, if all you ate was dog when you were a kid, you'd crave dog when you grew up instead of swine.
- rdldr1, on 11/16/2009, -2/+34In every culture, certain animals are designated for food, others are designated for companionship.
It's all about the cultural context. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE.
You don't go out into a different culture and then break all of their cultural taboos. That just makes you an *****. - fluidfoundation, on 11/16/2009, -5/+34Good point. Delicious must be a function of location. ;)
- Darkray16, on 11/16/2009, -0/+29Most Asians, especially Asian-Americans/Canadians or any other Asian immigrants, don't eat dog meat anymore. I live in South Korea, 95% of the Koreans I ask say the idea of eating dog meat disgusts them. That being said, I LOVE dog meat soup, it's so tasty.
BTW, those dogs not all that appetizing, not enough meat on those bones. - stormgren, on 11/16/2009, -1/+29Why is this in the "m4t" section of craigslist?
- xpinchx, on 11/16/2009, -3/+30Who cares, to some cultures any animal is potential food because it's what's available. It's not cruel, it's resourceful.
- dogfood, on 11/16/2009, -0/+26@DevinWatson
I'm a dog person as well. I also like domesticated pot-bellied pigs, but I'm not going to keep a 200 pound hog bred for slaughter as a playful companion. They aren't suited for that purpose. I have no moral qualms with eating an animal that was bred for the purpose of consumption.
I do however have problems with millions of dogs and cats being put to sleep each year at animal shelters after being abandoned. These animals were bred as pets, but there's far less moral outrage against the killing and dumping of these animals, than consuming dogs that were bred as livestock.
Dogs in asian cuisine are a rare delicacy, not a dietary staple. If I were to take a wild guess, it would be that there are more dogs killed and disposed of by animal shelters in western countries than there are dogs bred and slaughtered for consumption in asia. - grahamonrye, on 11/16/2009, -0/+25touche
- fluidfoundation, on 11/16/2009, -2/+26@fxu1989: If I'm hungry enough and have enough A1, none of my wifes cats are safe.
- Daz_Genetic, on 11/16/2009, -0/+22That is truly disgusting...
...The windows theme I mean. Not the delicious looking dogs. - Bridea, on 11/16/2009, -6/+27***** this racist *****.
- TimtheTaxMan, on 11/16/2009, -0/+20@heavywave
I suppose in a dumb, lumbering sort of way. Nevertheless, in the case of cows, they taste better than they are cute, so they are approved for human consumption. - YoThisBAlec, on 11/16/2009, -0/+20Well obviously ALL asians eat dogs.
No asian as EVER kept dogs as pets. Nope. Never. - Snoogs, on 11/16/2009, -0/+18Men for terriers... duh.
- MrSteamTank, on 11/16/2009, -1/+16It's too expensive to raise cats to eat. There is a reason we don't use carnivores as meat animals ever. Really dogs are the only reasonable "pet" that can make good eating. Even then piggies and cows are a lot more efficient.
I went to the biggest farm show(they call it "La Rural") here in Uruguay where they show off the animals. Their are cows here that look like god damn hippos because they have so much meat on them. I'm sure most other beef nations(New Zealand, Argentina, etc) have similarly ridiculous sized animals. I don't see how cats and dogs can compete even closely in terms of effectiveness to the other meat producing animals. So maybe that's why most people don't eat them. 8P - BREZZZ, on 11/16/2009, -2/+17If your chicken tastes a little gamey-- you've hit the jackpot of cat meat.

Beatles, eh? Do they taste like Walrus? - jessemoya, on 11/16/2009, -2/+13NO ASIANS!!! YOU'RE ALL THE SAME, RIGHT???
- ninjasnowman, on 11/16/2009, -1/+11Dog eats you! Wait. Is this soviet russia or not?
- korea, on 11/16/2009, -0/+10Dog can be prepared to be very tasty. It is still food for old people, but tasty. You are absolutely correct about the specific breed.
/dog person - falafelkiosken, on 11/16/2009, -1/+11but pigs aren't intelligent…. oh wait http://mammals.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_intell ...

- damonic, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10But beef from India is sooooooo tasty.
- RUFiO006, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10I was more concerned with what has happened to that Firefox.
- RoastPuppy, on 11/17/2009, -3/+12That's no urban legend. Back in the spring of 2006, dozens of dog and cat heads were found in the trash behind a Chinese restaurant in the Florida panhandle.
When I went to China with my grandfather in the summer of 2001, we ate dog in restaurants. It wasn't as good as beef, pork or chicken, but it wasn't bad either. My grandfather had eaten it before when he was in some Oriental country when he was in the Army. He said that when you'd been out in the field for days and you came back to the mess hall and had chipped beef on toast (he called it something else) slung at you, that dog looked pretty d#^&*d good!
There is no difference in killing and eating dogs, or using dog fur/hide for belts, or whatever, than killing and eating any other animal. or using the hides and furs of other animals. Americans need to get over their love affair with all things dog and realize that dogs are animals, not humans. - tkeajax, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10How Much? I'll marry a black woman.
