- anarchytv, on 11/11/2007, -2/+65I got a letter delivered to 30 years later, written by my grandfather to me before I was born. My mom was doing some spring cleaning one spring, and pulled out a bunch of assembled stuff and cards around my birth, and gave it to me as it was 'mine'. In it was a letter written by my grandfather in 1967 to me, predicting what it would be like when I was 30, in the year 2000+. He made some interesting predictions. What was really spooky is that I got it +/- 6 months from when he is talking about me being 30... quite by accident. It gets spookier.
After pondering the dates, I realized, he was not writting the letter to me or predicting my future, but was writting it to my sister who was one year older than me but was stillborn. Which is more surreal, considering if she hadn't of died, I probably wouldn't have been conceived... and even more amazing to me... that my parents could go on to attempt to have a baby yet again (me), after going through such devastating trauma of having your first child born dead.
My grandfather is still alive, btw, and flew a P-38 and P-40 against the Japanese in WW2. Was shot up a few times with only one engine running and escaped his pursuer by 'diving to the deck' above the ocean, crash landed another time in the desert of Australia from an oil failure while 'joy flying' off course in a P40, and hoofed it back to base. - Crossmenjeff, on 10/23/2007, -2/+28"Dearest Margerie, please feed the cat"
- tmbrwolf19, on 10/23/2007, -1/+17Truly astounding, sadly part of me is still curious what the postcard said.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/21/2007, -3/+17He's not my friend. I want him to unfriend me and stop spamming me.
- geneticlemon, on 10/21/2007, -2/+16Incidentally, in Japan during the holidays, the postmen work 24/7 to deliver letters/cards/etc. before the day of the holiday so people will receive them on time.
But in this case, it was just the actions of that really smart student to go searching for the receiver ... must've been nice for her to read the postcard. - Akaji, on 10/21/2007, -6/+18So it's true - Digg really is turning into a lame-ass social network a la MySpace.
- howtogyfpi, on 10/21/2007, -6/+15Seriously dude, do you have anything better to do? This is a great contribution! If you don't like it, unfriend him. There is no reason to spam your "Jihad". LAME!
- subxero37, on 10/21/2007, -0/+8Amazing that both of you did that. "Burried" is not a word.
- edenseager, on 10/21/2007, -4/+12Goddamn postal strikes...
- tmyprod, on 10/21/2007, -0/+7I'm not really sure how that's relevant to late mail, old people, or WWII.
- themoosejuice, on 10/21/2007, -1/+8Homeland security, we had to make sure it wasnt from a terrorist. Investigation complete, release the postcard.
- Soofi, on 10/21/2007, -1/+7It's a good story - credit should be given where credit is due.
Corrupt, war mongering media giants is one thing, but if they speak an ounce of truth or reason it can be acknowledged in context. - inactive, on 10/21/2007, -5/+11Something kind of haunting about these incidences is it? It is amazing how things turn up years later. There has to be a reason, if nothing else to console the bereaved. :)
- Economist35, on 10/21/2007, -0/+5maybe that's because fed ex didn't exist until 1971
- crapmatic, on 10/22/2007, -0/+5Well, at least there wouldn't be all that anime crap all over Myspace.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -0/+5Given where he was stationed, I have to wonder if he were one of those who so horribly brutalized the Allied POWs and native peoples in that region to build the Burma railroad? My uncle was taken prisoner when the Anglo-Filipino forces surrendered at Bataan, then survived the death march and the rest of it. It wasn't until I saw the palestinians dancing for joy at the sight of people leaping to their deaths on 9-11that I fully grasped the hatred he bore the japs the rest of his life.
- baalzebub, on 10/21/2007, -4/+8i like the Japanese people, i am glad our governments are not at war...
- Matt174e, on 10/21/2007, -1/+4In Soviet Russia, we like Chinese people.
- Touchy610, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3...I'm almost speechless.
- ZenMojo, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3Sure, this sounds like a happy ending, but the contents of the note? "We're out of milk."
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3+1 for honesty
- bamapachyderm, on 10/21/2007, -1/+4Here's a thread crawling with those *****, if you want to block and report them:

(Spam posts attract them like flies, naturally.) - dark1587, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3Better late than never, even if it is 64 years...
- djohnmalkovich2, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2As soon as I read the title, the first thought that came to mind: "I can't wait to read the comments for this one."
- clink0914, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2Great Scott!
- arjie, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2Why? Would you prefer 'crusade'?
- Skooma714, on 10/21/2007, -1/+3If you do not post this comment 10 times in the next hour pedobear will eat your brains and jerk off your dick
- Pake, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2Real shame too that the BBC is as corrupt and bias.
This is a good article none-the-less. - sethosayher, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2Amazing. Imagine getting a letter like that, it'd be like stepping right into the past.
- gak001, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1There should be a "Is *** a troll?" button.
- chevyorange, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1Me too and most of them suck. My second thought was, "what was written in the letter/card?"
- supermanred, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1And I noticed a lot of diggs defending fox recently on here, apparently Fox news has a few accounts on Digg.
- yfguitarist, on 10/21/2007, -2/+3Try to leave your biases at the door. It'll help you become a better person in the long run.
- MoosaofND, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1So what were the interesting predictions of which you speak?
- SiNN4R, on 10/21/2007, -1/+2How about we come to a compromise and you just die in a fire instead.
- hansk, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1yah i need closure on that anecdote
- pseudostatik, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1{deleted} sorry
- hansk, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1gaijnz?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1I actually contemplated 'crusade', but 'jihad' was testing much better in the 18-33 demographic... : P
If someone can offer a more catchy name, I'll consider it. - inactive, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1There are a number of similar incidents posted on the net; letters in a bottle; people hiding in the jungle for 60 years not knowing that WW2 ended; lost letters, postcards, packages, etc. Life is strange with history repeating itself or time frozen events turning up years later.
- pseudostatik, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1Disappointed aren't ya?
- supermanred, on 10/21/2007, -2/+2Seems a lot of people on here defending fox, they must have trolls with digg accounts.
- crapmatic, on 10/21/2007, -1/+1A representative from the Provisional Government of Imperial Japan, who came out of hiding in the Philippine jungles yesterday to speak with reporters, said they would not rule out pressing charges of tampering with the mail.
- k0chan, on 10/22/2007, -0/+0Impresive story...double surprised because the university is near my house. The letter reads; "We've not heard each other for long. You must be working at the home front. I'm working hard everyday for the state affair.", cited from http://www.asahi.com/kansai/news/OSK200710190115.h ... where you can see its photo.
- frozenpxl, on 10/21/2007, -1/+1I 'Jihad' your mother last night.
- flashfox, on 10/21/2007, -4/+3seriously dude stop with the Jihad crap
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -2/+1?!?!?!?!?!?
- SierraAlpha, on 10/21/2007, -3/+2Livefr33ordi3 you have some brown stuff on your nose...
- JoeVet, on 10/21/2007, -4/+3Show me a real source or it didn't happen. Buried!
- WiseWeasel, on 10/21/2007, -5/+4The day I stop is the day I gain the ability to block shouts from specified individuals or decline Digg story shouts from anyone.
