- andrewlotta, on 07/08/2009, -65/+563I have never seen such blatant racism in my lifetime...more eyes need to see this article.
The Valley Swim Club needs to be shut down. - NBCLocal, on 07/08/2009, -29/+367I just can't believe that in 2009 things like this still happen. I would say there may be another side of the story, but that comment from the pool club is just as absurd!
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -9/+271Pool's closed.
- digitalMessiah, on 07/08/2009, -9/+193Watch the video - they tried to get the other side of the story. The manager told them to get out or they would call the police. Its kind of hard to report both sides when one refuses to give it.
- lindenwold, on 07/08/2009, -36/+211If this was blatant racism, it is totally wrong - but I have a feeling there is more to this story.
Before you start jumping all over the "quote" from the pool club, realize that it was not a quote, but a second hand account, coming from a parent of one of the kids who was kicked out.
Welcome to Philadelphia, where some people are racist - and those that are not are made to look racist by the headline seeking, pathetically under-talented, unscrupulous Philadelphia news media. - inactive, on 07/08/2009, -6/+178Brian: I'm really enjoying playing golf.
Peter: You know my great-great-grandfather Angus Griffin invented the game.
[flashback]
Angus Griffin: So, we're all clear on the rules then. No Jews and no blacks.
Scottish men: Aye. - kingnova, on 07/08/2009, -18/+172U, WHERE in the article did it say these kids were dirty and uneducated?
Nice try, bigot. - Chahrlie5, on 07/08/2009, -38/+166At least they're honest
- mdhenshaw, on 07/08/2009, -29/+153It should be pointed out that this happened in supposedly the more tolerant "northern" part of the country. Moments like this are when the rubber hits the road. They kicked these kids out simply because they “didn’t belong.” Why didn’t they belong? This is simply an issue about race.

info@thevalleyclub.com - sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -9/+118If you weren't insinuating that these black children looked "dirty and uneducated" then why even make the comment at all? Your attempt at backpedaling doesn't hide that what you just said is even more racist than the statement issued by the swim club.
- Buelldozer, on 07/08/2009, -62/+157You've never seen such blatant racism? Let me give a few examples:
Congressional Black Congress - U.S. Government
Black Entertainment Television - Cable or Satellite provider near you
Negro College Fund - Proudly ignoring all other skin colors and minority groups since 4/25/1944
Miss Black America
The list goes on.
If you haven't seen racism as blatant as at that pool then you haven't been looking. - kingnova, on 07/08/2009, -18/+113"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club"
I blame Sotomayor for keeping the white man down... - ZenMojo, on 07/08/2009, -21/+112"I have never seen such blatant racism in my lifetime...more eyes need to see this article."
I have. Are you white? - johnnall, on 07/08/2009, -21/+111supplysidehtx, jtmon, and ceregota maybe you can explain exactly how they are not racist. They exclude people based on their skin color. How is that not racist? It's organizations like the ones Buelldozer mentioned that keep racism alive by creating a divide between the races and creating an us versus them mentality.
- andrewlotta, on 07/08/2009, -6/+94I thought the same thing until I read the comment from the pool club.
I think it is clear that wealthy parents at the club complained to management. They can't have little black kids swimming in their pool, you know? /s
What I don't understand is why they would make such a clearly racist remark. - hondaman, on 07/08/2009, -26/+109I don't believe for a moment that this story is factually accurate.
- andrewlotta, on 07/08/2009, -4/+84"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club," John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.
Sounds like it's coming from the President of The Valley Swim Club to me. - sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -14/+91Remove the one person who made the comment? The club themselves issued an official statement that essentially says "no black people allowed."
- wedges, on 07/08/2009, -1/+74its not a north/south thing. it's a rich thing.
- ganjadude4391, on 07/08/2009, -21/+93so let me get this straight. Its racist if black people are not allowed in a club/pool etc... but if its white people being excluded than its ok?? based on the amount of diggdowns you would think so.
in my personal experience black people are more racist these days than white people! - Diggnabbit, on 07/08/2009, -9/+80How is it racist? Is it racist to think that a white person is less likely to have seen blatant racism than a black person?
- crash331, on 07/08/2009, -4/+72two of my friends died while being black
- mrswirl, on 07/08/2009, -4/+66The first rule of Swim Club is you do not talk about Swim Club!
- rocknog, on 07/08/2009, -9/+69Well of course the article doesn't say they were dirty and uneducated - you could infer that from the fact that they're black. /s
God, mike2lane, you're a ***** racist ***** and too much of a coward to admit it. - ZenMojo, on 07/08/2009, -2/+59Because that's the way they think and that's the world they live in and there is no one to second-guess them and they have the power, money, and influence to maintain the lifestyles to which they are accustomed.
- DrunkenPirate34, on 07/08/2009, -8/+64Why you are being dugg down I don't understand. Blacks excluding whites is just as racist as whites excluding blacks.
- sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -11/+67It's a private club that advertises open membership and took their $1900, only to turn them away once they arrived.
- rbarnes, on 07/08/2009, -12/+67Don't act so surprised. Racism is still alive and kicking the United States. It doesn't walk down the street with a pillowcase on its head as it once did, but it's lying in the shadows waiting for any opportunity it can find to jump back into the spotlight. Who's to blame? Whites for thinking they're the more "civilized" race? Blacks for thinking society owes them a debt? When a white woman locks her car door just because a black man is walking down the sidewalk, racism smiles. When a black person is denied something they want and immediately throws down the "race" card, racism cheers. So long as there's geographic and socioeconomic segregation in the USA, racism will have a place to lay its head.
- Scanner, on 07/08/2009, -15/+69While I don't support the actions and viewpoints of the club I will defend their right to be a private club with all the privilages it entails.
It's a private club, they can admit or deny anyone they want. Like it or not, it isn't a crime to be racist/sexist/bigoted. - inactive, on 07/08/2009, -8/+58due to AIDS
- banderwocky, on 07/08/2009, -31/+81Wow. Massive law suit coming. Just really fricken massive. They deserve it. They should be horribly ashamed of themselves for this kind of behavior.
- jitterbits, on 07/08/2009, -6/+52Yes, in the same way it's sexist to assume that men don't have to deal with menstrual cramps!
Which is to say, not at all. - banderwocky, on 07/08/2009, -15/+58You are full of bigoted stupid.
"'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?' She's like, 'I'm scared they might do something to my child,'"
You fail at life. - sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -6/+48RTFA... they had accepted $2000 from the camp and advertised "open memberships" and only kicked the kids out once they arrived.
- sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -11/+53Their "PRIVATE" swimming club advertises "open membership" and you're going to talk about someone's reading comprehension? The parents of the children paid almost $2000 for membership and it only became an issue when they showed up. This isn't some invite-only club, it would be like if a black guy strolled into McDonald's, paid for a Big Mac and was then told "you need to leave, you might "change the complexion" of our business.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+41I think he was trying for a bit of humour, holee. Perhaps you should into this sometime?

Sorry, but I can't be the only one who thought of Habbo.. - sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -7/+46FTA:
"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,' John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement."
Translation:
"Blacks need not apply" - kevo21, on 07/08/2009, -7/+45It was just an Oh! Henry Bar guys, no need to get out of the pool!
- sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -10/+47So attempts at racial segregation from a business that advertises open membership shouldn't be grounds for some kind of civil lawsuit?
- nbcaffeine, on 07/08/2009, -3/+38"The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership."
They did approve, until they showed up and changed the complexion. - floppytoes, on 07/08/2009, -13/+48This must be a hoax, or at least a colossal misunderstanding. No non-political institution in the US could be this overtly racist. Right? Please?
- yocouchdigga, on 07/08/2009, -3/+35beat me to it!
>_<
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQGQYx84iPM - JimSwarthow, on 07/08/2009, -8/+39jeez, Southerners are so racist! wait, whu?
- sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -6/+37The club issued a statement and it was blatantly racist as well.
- sugarazor, on 07/08/2009, -4/+32It is not legal when you advertise open memberships and take money from the people you later kick out. Once you make your service available to the public, you cannot discriminate based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
- monkeystick, on 07/08/2009, -3/+31They used to only boot kids from the pool who accidentally "changed the complexion" of the water.
- rocknog, on 07/08/2009, -6/+34Hell no, why close the club? I like for racists ***** to be able to gather together in groups. Makes it easier to identify 'em.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -44/+69Being racist is to much work. I'm pretty lazy, so I don't bother. It really is just easier to get along with everyone. Plus you never know who you'll meet. Two of my best friends are black (I'm white) and they're some of the coolest guys I've ever met. But honestly, some of the minorities in my area are more racist then the white people. Not exactly related but I was in Vegas a few months ago and I couldn't believe how friendly every single person was. Every color, ethnicity, doesn't matter. Everyone was fantastic.
