- MrFurious2k, on 05/05/2008, -3/+40Why do they call it speed enforcement? They should just drop the pretext and call it revenue generation and be done with it.
- rageguy, on 05/05/2008, -3/+35Nothing new, we've had those here in Australia for years.
Its not about road safety, its about making money. From what I understand they've reduced the number of demerit points you lose in the last couple of years as well. Allowing speeders to be fined more while keeping them on the road. - trademarkhero, on 05/05/2008, -2/+29It's a trap!
- Alphateam, on 05/05/2008, -0/+23Here in Michigan they will put cops in what look like broken down vehicles then tell a cop further up the road to get you.
- benbread, on 05/05/2008, -10/+32More sensationalist crap from Daily Mail - can we have a new Digg Section? "News" "Images" "Videos" "Daily Mail Bollocks"?
- mrgoat, on 05/05/2008, -0/+14dailymail story on the front page AGAIN!
shocka - Jabertsohn, on 05/05/2008, -0/+14Things aren't bad if they are worse somewhere else?
- JunkStar2k, on 05/05/2008, -0/+11They have done that for years in denmark, putting an unmarked van on the side of the road with a speedcamera in it... Got my picture taken the other day... 100$ is alot for a black 'n white picture :(
- OMGIAMTHEMAN, on 05/05/2008, -4/+15speed camera in an empty police car = effective deterrent.
speed camera in an empty workman's van = gimmicky money-making scheme that doesn't deter dangerous speeds. - jameshickmott, on 05/05/2008, -5/+14No wonder people dislike the police. They spend more time trying to catch speeding cars than they do to catch criminals.
- Jabertsohn, on 05/05/2008, -1/+9Do you drive?
It is incredibly easy to find yourself at 35mph in a 30 zone. - MWeather, on 05/05/2008, -0/+7Could we, for once, NOT THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
Keep them out of the damn road and traffic's speed won't matter. - inactive, on 05/05/2008, -2/+8And then it speeds right back up past the cameras. I really don't get the point of all this aggressiveness against speeders. Maybe if you're going 20mph or more than the speed limit, that could be dangerous, but I doubt this is only being targeted to those individuals. I'd say in a large percentage of accidents in which speeding was the cause, it wasn't the speeding itself that was the cause but instead a differential in speed... Like going a normal 70 on the highway and running into a senior citizen doing 45 in the left lane. THAT is way more dangerous than just going 5-10 above the speed limit.
- cawpin, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6@localzuk - That's complete *****. I understand speed makes a difference but it isn't that great.
Also, why am I getting dugg down? I simply stated a fact. Personally, I think speeding within reason is the least of our problems on the road. Going 75 in a 65 zone really isn't that bad. Going 95 may be pushing it. The big problem is people that don't know the rules of the road. The right lane is for driving. The left is for passing. If you aren't actively passing somebody, get the ***** out of the left lane and use a turn signal when you do so. - turkeyssr, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6Can someone tell us when another officer, that did NOT witness your speeding, is able to issue the ticket? How does this stand up in court if the officer that witnessed the act isn't present? Alternatively, what if the writing officer doesn't show?
- localzuk, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5The money from speed cameras in the UK does not go back to the highways people. It goes into the police budget, where it gets wasted on more speed cameras and those fake police 'community support officers'.
- Conwaysb0718, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6Er, i think hes more furious at the fact they look you in the eye and tell you its "for safety" and "to protect children" instead of just being honest and telling the unwashed masses its a way to legally make money.
- digghasnoethics, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Which is why, if you get such a ticket, its your duty to challenge it, the legality of the trap, the parentage of the officers, etc. The aim is to ensure it cost the force more money to deal with the various bits of paperwork than they get in fines.
Once its a net cost centre normal bureaucracy see that its cut back. - Jonsey, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Not exactly sure how it is in the US.... but in Canada there is the criminal code, which deals with things like murders, fraud, and the most severe traffic violations such as DUI.. and each province has their own "Traffic Act" therefore speeding does not make you a criminal in Canada... although against that law.
That's how I interpret it anyways. - DeFex, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Daily mail:
LOCH NESS MONSTER IS NAZI U BOAT!!!11 - TonyLocNE, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4Are they not cameras? I would find it a waste of money for them to only put a radar gun in the van without a camera...
It's a form of remote monitoring. I wouldn't be surprised if it had the capabilities to produce live feed. And if it currently doesn't, what's a couple extra quid? Point is, it's extra surveillance without a physical presence.
And on another note, if you believe speeding to be dangerous, explain Germany's Autobahn and its remarkably low accident ratio compared to similar roadways in other countries, despite a set speed limit.
And another thing, saying that "Speed limits are there to stop you killing people..." implies that I have killed someone while speeding. I think I'll chalk today up on the board as whatever consecutive day it is without me killing someone while speeding. - inactive, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4I thought the purpose was to issue tickets to generate revenue. It's not going to generate as much revenue if people aren't speeding.
- JPFinno, on 05/05/2008, -3/+7I can't believe people are whinging about an unmarked van. Police in South Australia were putting speed cameras in rubbish bins.
- localzuk, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4I wish more people would listen to that statement. It gets on my nerves how people try to explain away the bad things in their own towns/countries by saying "it's worse in X".
- justinx0r, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4Here in Maryland the cops drive new Mustangs, Ford Explorers, and some Chevy's. It was pretty weird when I saw an '07 Mustang pulling over another car.
- chevyorange, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3You do realize that you can kill someone doing 5 UNDER the limit? Its not just speeding. My God people will give up freedom for this? What a great PR machine they must have over there.
- roosterjm2k2, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4That's not how it works. Stateys do it here in VA alot.
Once one clocks you, the other pulls you over. The one that clocks you drives up and issues the ticket. At least, thats what my neighbor (state trooper) tells me. I asked the same thing. I also asked about the "line of sight" rule, that says that an officer has to keep you in sight, otherwise they can't prove absolutely that you were driving, and didn't switch (attorneys will use that if line of site isn't kept) but apparently VA has a "reasonable" judgment call on that...like, if it was 3-5 minutes, then yeah, you will likely not get the ticket, but if it was 30 seconds on a highway, then no...you will still get a ticket...
The moral of the story is don't speed. I still don't understand why everyone thinks the speed limit is 10MPH above posted...minimum...and at some places (eastern corridor on 95) think that the speed limit is really 90mph ... I've gotten tickets, but I've never gotten one I didn't deserve..and I sure as ***** don't look for every possible way to get out of it... you did something wrong, you got caught...man up and take it like you have a pair. - Abomonog, on 05/05/2008, -2/+5Not only this is old, but in America police use the camera mounted in an abandoned van trick all the time and have been for years. But they aren't looking for speeders here. They use them to get a video of Johnny boy selling a joint so they can put him up the river for 10 years.
- Cerebron, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3I don't know if it's just where I live or what, but I'm pretty sick of the ***** that walk in the road when there is a perfectly fine sidewalk alongside it. Sometimes those damn kids/old people have it coming. If they never learned to stay out of/dodge traffic, they nearly deserve a good rundown.
/also hates ***** school buses blocking traffic. have you seen those damn kids, fresh off the bus, run across the street without looking? it starts young, expecting the world to stop while they do what they want in the street. - KloroFormd, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3And a helluvalot easier to be out of site and on a different road by the time that thing can hit the speed limit.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Breaking the law = crime?
Crime = criminal? - TheHayze, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3I was told about one particular inovative speed trap here in PA. A cop will be on a 4-wheel ATV with the device in hand, about a mile down the road behind a bush from his buddies in the squad cars. While one or two unmarked police cars making their rounds in the roads they were watching. Only way you'd spot em if they spot you. I heard about it from an unlucky friend. It's weird though, because most of the time the cops'll stick to their normal "hiding spots" which are all well known by now by the populous, and everybody slows down near the general areas. It's like a new traffic pattern.
- Jabertsohn, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4By 'EXCESSIVELY' you mean 34 in a 30 zone?
Also, it is not enforcing the law, the law states that speed cameras should be clearly visible and this is not so. - sagat, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3"Dailymail in toilet paper disguised at newspaper shocker"
- localzuk, on 05/05/2008, -2/+5We should include Fox in that section too.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3And where is that kid's parent, keeping him out of the ***** road? Besides, my argument was mainly for non-residential areas such as the ones being used in the original article.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3When Fox starts getting 10 stories a day on the home page, that might be worthwhile. They get maybe 2 a week.
Huffintonspam needs its own section though, under ***** propaganda. - inactive, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3At least the brits aren't shy about setting fire to speed cameras. I'm sure we've all seen the pictures by now ( http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2.htm )
- Tenlow, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Oregon is the worst for that. Parts of the 5 go from a 70mph speed limit to a 65 to a 60 to a 55 to a 50 to a 45 to a 70 to a 48.21 to a 94 to a 16 to a 6 to a 100.7 etc. The entire state is one big speed trap. (seriously, it does drop from 70 to 45 over a 2 mile stretch in at least two spots in Oregon)
- petebert, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3how did they get the spy photo of the equipment inside of this van?
- meatmcguffin, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2How many of those are government owned and how many are private businesses?
Don't get me wrong, i *hate* all these cameras but there are relatively few that are owned by the councils - CarnivalOfDust, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I was halfway through the title before I realised it would be from the Daily Mail. Buried.
(But I'm eternally grateful to Digg - I always knew the DM was a nonsense rag, but it's only since I used Digg that I saw how ridiculous it was.) - etx313, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2That's a good question. I'll get back to you on that!
- freshyill, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Maybe a tag, but it would be silly to get its own.
- qwertydvorak, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2should just burn it like the gatso.
http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2.htm - PurpleSfinx, on 05/05/2008, -1/+3Isn't this idea really obvious? Haven't police done this for years?
- dafunkmonster, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I mounted a grenade launcher on my car for just such an occasion...
- Chompy, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2It doesn't, at least in the US. If your officer doesn't show up in court (ALWAYS go to court), then the case is dismissed. Even if he does it's still worth it to go to court and plead guilty; if your record is clean then the judge will usually give you probation before judgement. PBJ = no points.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2My point is people going severely under OR over the speed limit are much more dangerous than if everyone is going 10-15 above on a highway. If you go with the flow, it's going to be much safer for everyone.
- rockpeteuk, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2another daily mail news source on the front page ...... can there BS not be band
