- Albionshores, on 11/30/2007, -7/+66The level of tasering, and when it can be used, has gotten well out of hand. Diplomacy has taken a back seat in law enforcement. Tasering in anything other than exceptional circumstances should be considered an assault. The police are there to uphold and protect the law - currently it seems as though they are rising above and beyond it and stretching it to their own interpretation. Sadly things are set to get worse as twitchy soldiers and unaccountable contractors return from working in the Middle East to find work in 'law enforcement'.
- tucsonsun13, on 11/30/2007, -15/+53Dirty little secret regarding the act of tazing: It's REALLY REALLY FUN!
Notice that police often fire a second and third time, even after the victim has been rendered completely immobile. It's a power trip and tazers are without question a gateway to even crueler weapons of the future. The police state is becoming a reality. - objectcode, on 11/30/2007, -5/+39are they getting out of control? or are we just starting to pay more attention to them?
- Albionshores, on 11/30/2007, -1/+34But more and more that is exactly the case. You don't want to get out of the car *ZAP*, you argue back *ZAP*, you speak out in a public place and don't want to be taken away *ZAP*, appear aggitated or scared *ZAP*
It's rife; go to YouTube and search 'Taser'. Here, I'll do it for you.....
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=taser& ... - Ouze, on 11/30/2007, -3/+30Some training is needed so badly. I think tasers are a life-saving tool in an officer's arsenal - but it needs to be the second-to-last resort for when force is used. It's a less-lethal weapon, and should only be employed to protect the officer or someone else from injury or death - not to get compliance for stupid ***** like refusing to sign speeding tickets. So many officers recently have used tasers when they should have used common sense.
- Albionshores, on 11/30/2007, -5/+30It needn't necessarily be a choice between having a bullet put inside you or having high voltage passed through your body. More often than not there is a valid 3rd way - negotiation and diplomacy.
- maeon3, on 11/30/2007, -6/+29New Rule!
If someone uses a taser and turns out it was unwarrented, then that person shall be tasered for 15 minutes at double the voltage he administered. If death occurs, we assume he must have been "on drugs". - Sle3per, on 11/30/2007, -1/+16wouldn't that create a never ending cycle of painful and humiliating deaths?

http://web.amnesty.org/report2003/phl-summary-eng - Drahkar, on 11/30/2007, -3/+18Actually this is not true. Not even remotely true. There news outlets are being buffeted with reports of police overusing Tasers. From people suffering Diabetic attacks to old individuals being tasered while sleeping on their couch. Not to mention guys who just question the accuracy of an officer's statements. Currently the Policy are using the Taser as a first step response to a situation instead of a second to last step.
- Darksaber11, on 11/30/2007, -8/+23The public response to this video is absolutely disgusting. People say things like "He was asking for it." or "He should have known this would happen if he asked a question like that." *****. People, wake up, this is the United States of America, a FREE NATION where the RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE are protected by our CONSTITUTION. The police have NO RIGHT to drag someone away and TAZE THEM REPEATEDLY for QUESTIONING THE STATUS QUO.
- ChronoMojo, on 11/30/2007, -1/+15So you're saying torturers need to be tortured? How does that solve anything?
- capiCrimm, on 11/30/2007, -1/+15so the question is what number of "YOU'RE UNDER ARREST *ZAP*"'s are allowable?
- MasterRex, on 11/30/2007, -14/+26'Protect and Serve' has turned into 'Tase the Disobedient'.
- glasnostic, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12***** you.
i am a ***** human being and i have right not to be treated like a cow..
do you moo? does your wife have utters? are your children being turned into veal piccata?
NO?
then stop acting like cattle - HonestAbe, on 11/30/2007, -9/+20Digg.com Hysteria About Taser Use Out Of Control
- oldhick, on 11/30/2007, -2/+13Nice made up stat. What the hell do you know? I've seen plenty of people get tasered by cops and have yet to see a single instance where that was the ONLY solution.
- griz, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12No, it's *ZAP*.... "You're under arrest"
- Rahodeb, on 11/30/2007, -0/+10Not to mention the fact that if I have a heart condition, I'll take a couple of swats from a nightstick long before I want my heart stopped by a taser.
- republicker, on 11/30/2007, -3/+13So your saying if an ***** cop thought you were doing something wrong and you were not, you would let him arrest you just because he felt like it. I guess spineless pussies would just let a cop run over their rights, but many people don't put up w/ that *****. Furthurmore, If a cop is not proficient in hand to hand combat or somthing similar they should not be cops. If a drunk resists arrest you throw his ass on the ground and handcuff him, it happens everyday, probably thousands of time per year w/out incident. So y do you need to taze an unhappy speeding motorist or a pregnant women? Powertripping, thats why.
- brokenheartedme, on 11/30/2007, -9/+18never! here in the Philippines, police officers can't do that unless it's an order!
- SpectralSounds, on 11/30/2007, -2/+11That isnt an excuse. If you don't like what you are paid, ask for a raise or find another job. It's not my responsibility to deal with your bad attitude because you don't like how much you get paid. You are part of the problem and not part of the solution. As a police officer, not a single outside factor happening in your personal life, should effect the way you treat people you are dealing with. It's not their fault you are getting ***** wages. You are condoning ***** police work because the cop is having a bad day, or week or month or life.
Yes, you do end up with, "The willing". But, if you raised police officers wages, you would still have the same amount of *****.... they would just be higher paid *****.
Proceed to bury me. - scorchedearth, on 11/30/2007, -5/+14Actually, the cops should be taught some martial arts so that they don't need to pull out their electroshock devices on people all the time. Some simple training and a cop could have anyone down and secure in seconds.
Its just easier being ***** lazy. - jhshukla, on 11/30/2007, -6/+14It has already been mentioned a million times: lack of injury or detectable signs does not warrant excessive use of force.
and to answer your question: no. - spyrochaete, on 11/30/2007, -7/+15Is taser use really out of control? I doubt they're used much more today than 5 years ago, but after a couple of front page headlines the journalistic sharks smell the blood in the water and have turned the topic into a sensationalist feeding frenzy. Perhaps something needs to be done about tasers, but no more urgently today than in recent years.
- Rahodeb, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8So, obviously the only option to stop this distrought pregnant woman was to tase her? She was already on the ground when they tased her in the neck. THAT is why it's ***** up. Because they use it when they don't have to.
I've seen lots of people doing nothing more than arguing a point and getting tased for it. It has clearly gone too far. that is not how citizens of our country should be treated by the police who are supposed to "serve and protect", not zap when questioned. - oldhick, on 11/30/2007, -4/+12You got to love sheep. Just follow your masters orders!
- alkajazz, on 11/30/2007, -4/+12"Ya ya, some cops are crooked but deal with it"
Why should we have to put up with that? - Darksaber11, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8How can you honestly believe that?
Edit: After reading your profile, I can't tell if you're kidding or not. I hope you are. - Dragular, on 11/30/2007, -9/+16Is that why the death squads are roaming over there?
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -2/+9They were originally introduced as an alternative to lethal force when suspects became violent, go watch some 1990's news videos. Do people get out of hand? Yes. Does it warrant the use of a weapon thats known to be deadlier than a billyclub? No.
- clandress, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7Bury you, hell I want to kiss you. I couldn't agree more.
- Drahkar, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7@ Rahodeb -
Precisely. I think part of the problem is that people do not understand the great harm that can be done to the human body, especially an ailing human body suffering from congestive heart failure or precious heart attacks or has a pacemaker. A high jolt of electricity can easily kill these people. For people to think of a taser as a non-lethal weapon is just to be completely misinformed. Hell, even on the manufacturer's website for tasers they call them 'Safer' means of immobilizing targets. Safer is not non-lethal. - HoldenCfld, on 11/30/2007, -7/+14Please, stop with the damn taser articles. It's always the same comments anyway.
Side A: "Don't tase me bro!", "***** the cops!", "OMG Unneccesary!"
Side B: "People should stop doing stupid things", "What would you like them to do instead? Shoot you?"
Side C: "Something is wrong, we should try and fix it in a logical, non-sensationalist manner" - degron, on 11/30/2007, -3/+10So the guy that got tasered while he was sleeping in his home was being uncooperative?
http://digg.com/politics/Police_Taser_man_sleeping ... - wendelgee2, on 11/30/2007, -3/+9Obviously the only course of action is tasing. Handcuffs are useless against such a murderous Hannibal Lechter-type perp.
- shredluc, on 11/30/2007, -4/+10Funny, you say "STOP BREAKING THE LAW" as if some words on paper are the end all of human behavior. What if the law said you need to get kicked in the groin once a day? Somehow i don't think you would object to breaking it. Oh and if you are going to say that there are no stupid laws like that, well that opinion is subjective. Some laws that make sense to you are like kicks to the groin to others - and then you go blame them for not liking getting kicked. That is why you will always have people resisting and not wanting to cooperate. The more arbitrary "man" laws we create the worse it will get. We need to try a different system, but then why should the ones doing the kicking want to change?
- Dragular, on 11/30/2007, -7/+13Partially, thank you. It IS a training issue. It's NOT the weapon itself. The speeding ticket thing... that guy should have been off the force a LONG time ago. The ultimate problem is that we're dealing with a high-risk, low-pay career... in most areas, the "best of the best" try to get moved into better departments in higher-paying areas, so you end up with less "best of the best" and more "the willing."
That is NOT taking a stab at other officers, only at pitiful wages they get in most places. I'm usually jumping on people for being opposed to tasers but I'll say this, if they'd consider pay raises instead of tasers in most situations you'd end up with a completely better force.
I will say this. In most situations I've been in, the taser is only used because the suspect is apparently targetting another officer or a bystander. There is just as much risk that one punch thrown odd could strike the back of someone's head and kill them as there is that a tried and tested taser could cause someone to die. I'm going to risk the assailant's life in that situation before I take the risk with a bystander or one of my men... if that's fascism in anyone's mind then I guess you can call me Mussolini. - pivot, on 11/30/2007, -12/+18THANK YOU. Enough with the taser headlines.
- objectcode, on 11/30/2007, -4/+10too bad that guy who got tased in his sleep didn't wake up when the cops told him to. he could have avoided being tased.
- shredluc, on 11/30/2007, -1/+7They would not seem to have any problems doing the reverse. (You tase them, they shoot you.)
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -4/+10They are not isolated incidents. We are only seeing the taserings happening on video. I bet there are 100 BS taserings for each one captured on video and released to youtube.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -3/+9"You don't get tased unless you're being combative!" Eh. Go watch some videos of subdued suspects being tased. Theres plenty of them available.
- Hickeroar, on 11/30/2007, -6/+12There are dozens of youtube videos that would beg to differ. This taser thing has GOT to stop. Eventually the citizens of some small town are going to snap when some town kid gets killed by a taser and police officers are going to start to get killed in retaliation.
- chrispix, on 11/30/2007, -8/+14I think everyone has lost their F'n mind. You know why I don't care? Because I will listen to what a police officer has to say. If he tells me to lay on the ground, put my hands behind my back. I will do it. I wan't to know how many cases of police abuse there are when someone actually follows their instructions (as a percent of all instructions given by police) It is probably miniscule. Better yet, I wan't to know how many people have been tasered for FOLLOWING police instructions? Probably a miniscule amount in the grand scheme of things. So I will take my chances and follow their instructions. If I was doing nothing wrong, I should not have anything to worry about.
For example. I was driving home from college in a hatchback mustang, I had the whole rear window blocked by a blank canvas (painting). I passed a police officer, going 3-5 mph over speed limit, and kept looking in my rearview to see if he was going to get me. Well I paid so much attention to the rearview (having to sit up high to look over the canvas), that I was swerving in my lane, and he came and pulled me over.
When he got to my car, he asked for license and registration. Told me the reason I was pulled over was that I was weaving, I said sorry, I was going a couple miles per hour over speed limit, and wanted to make sure that I pulled over if he followed me and turned his lights on, and was sitting up to look out my rearview, and swerving. He asked what was covering up the back of my car. I said a canvass, he asked if I had anything illegal in my car, I said nope (I did not have anything illegal in car or on person). He asked if I would have any problem searching my car or person. I said go ahead, nothing on me or in car. He patted me down, made me stand off to the side of my car while he searched. He found nothing, helped me put stuff back in my car, and sent me on my way with a warning.
I am guessing if I had started arguing, got out of my car and started backing up or running around, I could expect to be tasered.. Move on to something real. - aminom, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5If you look at the trend in American culture in general, there is a huge trend away from cooperation, negotiation, and reason. You see it in foreign policy, where the use of force and threats of force are key. In both parties in congress, where partisanship trumps compromise. Contract law and contracts are not TRUE contracts (the result of negotiation between two parties) but one-sided documents that solely protect the interests of the party who wrote it. Negotiations between unions and employers are failing as one or both sides fail to compromise. And now we see the police using force at a drop of a hat. Unless we begin to change our culture and ourselves, we will see more of this and other ills.
- musicpyrite, on 11/30/2007, -5/+10Kill yourself
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6Um, the lady in the video had a cop twice her wight sitting on top of her (and her unborn baby) when he started tasering her, all she tried to do was leave.
- degron, on 11/30/2007, -3/+8I repeat myself:
So the guy that got tasered while he was sleeping in his home was being uncooperative?
