- craig870, on 11/15/2007, -13/+219Wow did any of you read the article? Look I know that Police Officers are not popular on Digg but give me a break. "After officers arrived at the mother's Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment, the teen refused to stop as he approached police with a black object in his hand hidden under his shirt, Browne said." That pretty much says it all. Or how bout the deceased saying that he had a gun? Or wait how bout his mother confirming what he said? Your gonna have to accept it folks, sometimes the police are right.
- itsjussed, on 11/15/2007, -6/+76I will take the cops side on this one, but hear me out. If YOU had a gun but are not a cop and someone with a black object came to you AFTER you heard there was a gun somewhere, you wouldn't shoot? Would you be considered a coward if you shot them? Please, I know SOME cops are pigs but stop following the crowd and "fight the power" *****.
"Another neighbor, Wayne Holder, said police should be required to see a weapon before opening fire on a suspect. "At least see a gun before you start to discharge it," Holder said. Police "don't even have to see it, [if] they think you got one, you're going to get shot.""
"Excuse me sir, can I verify that you have a gun?"
"Yeah sure, come closer."
Just think about that. - inactive, on 11/15/2007, -7/+62look at all the people hating the cops because some jackass committed suicide by cop.
Next you ***** will be saying the cops have to be shot before they can defend themselves. - dyrshin, on 11/15/2007, -11/+4820 shots fired, 8 struck the suspect....where did the other 12 go?
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 11/15/2007, -6/+42What a *****. If you run up to the cops with an unidentified object under your shirt and yell out: "I've got a gun, I've got a gun," of course you're going to get shot twenty times. Learn some empathy. The cops thought there was an imminent threat and they subdued it as fast as possible. They didn't have time to decide "OK NOW LETS USE FORCE BUT NOT TO MUCH FORCE MKAY?" They thought that they were in immediate danger and they acted instinctively.
- lhbaker, on 11/15/2007, -7/+36I seriously doubt that a goup of cops would conspire to kill a kid. If I were a cop, and I thought somebody had a gun, and I had to choose between being wrong and not going home, I'm going to pull the trigger until my gun is empty. Multiply the number of bullets available times the number of cops, and you have total shots fired. It's not like calling a pop ***** fly.
- Hobbes24, on 11/15/2007, -4/+33shooting is a little more difficult that it is in counter strike
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -7/+34That is because you are an ignorant *****. See, what you don't know is that the 911 tape has the guy screaming that he has a gun.
- Pilot85, on 11/15/2007, -4/+28Read it, seems like suicide by cop.
P.S. Al Sharpton is a moron. Just thought I'd put that out there. - XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 11/14/2007, -2/+24Before someone replies, "BUT JUSSED, THEY SHOT 20 TIMES!," realize that there was a number of cops in a group that ALL acted instinctively. They didn't have time to decide how they would take down this imminent threat.
- TacticalPenguin, on 11/15/2007, -8/+30Yes, those cops are a horrible shot - 2 of every 5 bullets hit.
Yes, they shot way more than they needed to
Yes, they were threatened - he TOLD THEM that he had a gun and TOLD THEM to shoot him.
Yes, they were justified in shooting him - he told them he had a gun, flashed a knife at them several times, etc
The issue isn't the cops, it's the lack of training and low requirements to pass the training course. People see cops represented on TV and think they can shoot a gun out of a suspect's hand from 50 yards away. Guess what? They can't. Guess what? Cops are humans, they get scared, when they get scared, they react, and their reaction to someone walking around saying they have a gun is to shoot before being shot at. All the guy had was a knife and a brush? Too bad, maybe he shouldn't have told them he had a gun. If this guy had had the common sense to throw his hands in the air when he had a gun pointed at him, he would still be alive. The problem isn't always the cops, it is often partially the suspect/victim's fault as well. It's not the cops' fault some people are just stupid. - dotlizard, on 11/15/2007, -2/+23you can't even really say RTFA, and have that mean anything -- this is just another example of the crap-for-journalism we suffer from today. desperate for the scoop, the news agency interviews any passerby with a pulse and reports the opinions and hearsay like facts.
best to wait for the report (if any) of an actual investigation, than to debate based on the NON-NEWS of sketchy details and an "eyewitness" account or two. remember, eyewitnesses are really terrible evidence. - dukrous, on 11/15/2007, -1/+21This sounds like a case of suicide by cops.
- kinseyincanada, on 11/14/2007, -5/+25do not mention Dane Cook on DIGG!
- danwallace, on 11/14/2007, -4/+23That's because you're not smart.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 11/15/2007, -6/+24Wow. Please go move to a different country.
- davids1, on 11/15/2007, -1/+18"the teen's mother reported he had not taken his anti-depressant and anti-psychotic medication." ):
- craig870, on 11/15/2007, -5/+21Actually I did read the entire article. There was one witness that made that statement.
- AntParmenter, on 11/15/2007, -4/+19I don't blame the police. I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
- craig870, on 11/15/2007, -3/+18No not retarded but I thank you for your concern. The deceased stated that he had a gun. Would you have attempted to approach with an ASP or Taser? Do you even know the useful range of the Taser? All kinds of armchair quarterbacking going on here.
- 786digger, on 11/15/2007, -8/+22Are you a dumbass? 18-year-old Khiel Coppin can be heard saying, "I've got a gun, I've got a gun," - they did the right thing!
- Hobbes24, on 11/15/2007, -6/+19and this will soudn racist, but i'ts likely that neighbor was black too, and thusly dosen't like cops
ergo, not a credible source - willyjlyles, on 11/15/2007, -1/+14Buried.
If the cops (or anyone really) has a gun drawn on you, and you tell them that you have a gun, the only way you can reasonably expect to get out without being shot is if you happen to be in the matrix. - Hobbes24, on 11/15/2007, -5/+17yea, i mean, how dare they put their asses on the line to keep you and your family safe every day?
it's stupid pissiant little ***** like you that give our generation a bad name - Damian91, on 11/15/2007, -2/+14The hairbrush tried to make a run for it.
- izzybr, on 11/15/2007, -4/+16Wow. 36 diggs, 58 comments.
RTFA bitches
NYTimes also said he told cops he had a gun. And from the family they knew he had a history of mental illness - SleepingOrange, on 11/15/2007, -1/+13People seem to think that this was some peaceful situation where everyone is calm and collected, and has a nice chat around tea regarding the use of useful force in this case.
No... you have a mentally ill young male, making wild threats, appearing to have a gun, definitely has a weapon. The mom is probably hysterical.
I'm sorry, but I'm with the cops on this one. Their job is to protect and serve... in this case, I think it was more important to protect the mom and themselves.
"He began screaming from the window at his mother and the police," the police statement said. "At some point, the male climbed out of the window and began crossing the sidewalk toward the police."
Read the article. - danwallace, on 11/14/2007, -3/+15Nah, basically no matter what a cop does, we're going to have a bunch of kids calling them "pigs" online.
- adrianmonk, on 11/14/2007, -1/+12I'm not surprised at all that 20 shots were fired. If you really believe your life is in danger (which is the necessary condition for firing the *first* shot), you don't assume that your first shot hit the guy. And if multiple people are firing, you don't assume they hit him either, because for all you know, they might be panicking and totally missing the guy. You don't really know until a moment or two later whether anybody has hit him, and in such a situation by definition you are afraid for your life. So you shoot a few more times to increase the odds that at least one of the bullets hits the guy.
Incidentally, I've never fired a handgun, but I've gone skeet shooting. There are times when you hit several in a row, but there are also times when miss 10 in a row. Sure, target practice increases your odds, but do you want to bet your life on the idea that you're not having a bad streak as far as aim goes? - barc0001, on 11/14/2007, -2/+13Actually, yes. The guy in question had the "weapon" hidden under his shirt, and I am pretty sure those cops went in with weapons drawn. Why not have one of the cops draw a taser while the rest hold their weapons on him and plug him if he moves. And if he doesn't move by the time the taser's ready, let him have it, and he lives, situation over.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 11/15/2007, -5/+16Yeah, let's use tasers when we some guy is threatening to shoot us with a gun.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -2/+13You obviously have NO IDEA what police work entails if you think that hand to hand combat is a good option in this, or most cases.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -2/+12They did not shoot way more than they needed to. Idiots liek you bitch about TWENTY SHOTS" thinking that it must have been a 10-15 second barrage of shots. EAch cop fired an average of 4 shots. Probably in less than 2 seconds. The last bullet was fired before the guy hit the ground. That is what they are trained to do. You shoot to kill if you think you are in immediate danger...which someone saying they have a gun would put you in.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -3/+13You REALLY don't want to reveal to the world that you ever think of Dane Cook.
- jc7012, on 11/15/2007, -3/+13Hmm, I was expecting lots of, "***** da Police," comments. I was not, however, expecting diggers to actually put themselves in a police officer's shoes (so to speak) and consider the situation.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -3/+13Yes he is, this is another case of people not reading the story... just the headline.
- phlll, on 11/14/2007, -1/+11RTFA- suicide by cop.
- jc7012, on 11/14/2007, -1/+10"Folloing," is not a word.
- joebrender, on 11/14/2007, -0/+9A lot of diggers never read the article, just the headline, which is a little misleading in this case. Too bad this teen had a deathwish. The officers' conduct looks justified to me.
- therightside, on 11/14/2007, -2/+11Cause that one witness always tells the truth and the cops always lie.
- nreynolds, on 11/15/2007, -1/+10he doesn't support Ron Paul. He fakes it to make us look stupid.
- Chompy, on 11/14/2007, -2/+11Sorry armchair quarterback, but if I'm a cop and some idiot is screaming that he has a gun, and the 911 caller (his mother) said he had a gun, and he's got something under his shirt that could be a gun, then I'm going to play it safe and assume he has a gun. No matter how many teenagers judge my actions based on what they read in a sensationalized news article, I'm going home tonight.
- eviscero, on 11/15/2007, -3/+12You dingbats are pathetic.
" The teen put an object under his shirt and told his mother around the time she phoned 9-1-1 that he was going to say he had a gun, said New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
The teen told her, " 'I'm prepared to die,' " Kelly told reporters.
When authorities arrived at the Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment, the teenager had something stuffed under his shirt and several times showed a knife to police. "Shoot me, kill me," he shouted, according to Kelly. "Come get me. I have a gun. Let's do this."
Coppin ignored repeated commands to stop and get on the ground. Witnesses said the teen appeared to be holding an object underneath his shirt and pointed it at the officers. Coppin continued to approach officers, as they ordered him to stop, said Kelly."" - fegul, on 11/15/2007, -1/+9If the article is indeed accurate, I can't see what else the cops really could have done given the poor light, dark object, gun threats, and hysterics.
I feel for the cops that shot him when they found out he didnt have a weapon, can't imagine that being easy at all - jc7012, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8Keep playing Halo 3 and showing off your impressive shot there.
- blackmage439, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8Quoted for truth, that ***** had it coming. Walking toward a bunch of cops with a black object in your hand is just as suicidal as walking up to a Blackwater guard holding a pipe and a match.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 11/14/2007, -4/+12That was the account of ONE witness. It was not objectively said in the article that the victim actually dropped the brush. Note how the witness also says: Gibson said. "He put his hands up. Police just started firing." Wow, look at that. The witness's account and the article's account disagrees with each other.
I'm sure you also believe that we did not land on the moon because of some "witness" 's account. - dupswapdrop, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10Hey lets see what you do under fire, 99% of people who have to shoot at someone will empty the gun and believe they only fired one or two shots. When everyone else is shooting you will be also.
- gmprunner, on 11/14/2007, -1/+9In the handy article that the big blue link up there, which you didn't press, takes you to, it clearly states that the police told the offender multiple times to drop his weapon, get on the ground, etc.
But don't let silly things like facts get in your way of being anti-cop. - gapingass, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10The kid said "come and get me, I have a gun" and now the cop is getting blamed? You all are ***** up.
