- californicator, on 07/14/2009, -0/+39Yo... easy on the brakes there, Sky King!
- Chairboy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+23A side note, the damage to the plane itself was probably minor. Sheet metal is pretty tough, and this could probably be put right after a couple hours in the shop.
The expensive part is the engine. Whenever a prop hits something while running (which this one did) the manufacturers say that the engine must be inspected for crankshaft damage. Because of how the economics of aviation work, this is beaucoup bucks. I've got a pretty inexpensive plane, a Piper Warrior. If I had a prop strike, the teardown and inspection would probably be $10k minimum, and that assumes that I don't stupidly pony up the extra few thousand to get it rebuilt while it's apart. A new propeller is a few thousand too, assuming it's a relatively cheap fixed pitch one. Another $10k possibly if it's a constant-speed prop.
So, hope they had good insurance. - nysus, on 07/15/2009, -1/+20"Only one of the three passengers onboard was slightly injured."
Were they hoping for more? - shaunj66, on 07/15/2009, -0/+14Now do a barrel roll!
- emecks, on 07/15/2009, -1/+14It's funny because the front of an airplane is called the nose and Colombia is famous for nasal activities too.
- borez, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10ENDO... oh *****!
- raptordrew, on 07/15/2009, -0/+9What's sad is this happens often. Unfortunately, not many pilots are properly trained in taildraggers anymore - I almost did this a few times on my first few landings when my dad taught me. Scared the ***** out of me, almost made me stop flying, but he forced me to finish, which I am grateful for.
- krekc, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6Thats flippin crazy!
- pathouston22, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Quick, somebody get this footage to Michael Bay...we need some EXPLOSIONS!
- mathyou87, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5I don't know if it's a joke, but you can turn the volume all the way up to 11.
- SirBruce, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5"The Cessna appeared to be making a normal approach when its tail lifted up, turning the plane over."
Do they talk to anyone familiar with flying before writing such things? The guy clearly landed with too much speed, and instead of continuing the pull back lightly on the stick, hit the brakes too hard. You can even hear the brakes! No doubt his speed was why he hit the breaks so forcefully.
Unless there was a wind issue or a mechanical problem this looks like 100% pilot error. - BillE3, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6If you are going to make a two point wheel landing with a tail dragger, you absolutely must wait for the tail to settle to the ground and hold full back on the stick before applying brakes.
This is a textbook case of how not to make a wheel landing. Notice the elevator (rear control surface) is neutral when the pilots brakes hard and squeals the tires. Then tries pulling back on the stick when it is already on its way over. - allyclark, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5Crazy! I'm glad the pilot was ok though
- Chairboy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4The other two were... horribly injured?
- emecks, on 07/14/2009, -2/+6You'd think they'd teach handbrakes at flying school, no?
- mike42979, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Quick hide the crack ahhh ***** it.
- AmyVernon, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5No, they just supply the goods for the nasal activity.
- Canuck, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4"The Cessna appeared to be making a normal approach when its tail lifted up, turning the plane over. "
To me it looked like they were trying to make the turn before they slowed down enough to do so. They should have gone past to the next exit. - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Something tells me people are just looking for plane crash stories to submit. This is from January!
- emecks, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Aaah, thanks for that. See in Scotland we supply the best whisky known to mankind - but we sample plenty of it too ;)
- appleseed1234, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Forget this video, did anyone see the German plane crash in the sidebar? That was incredible.
- LoudMusic, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4This made BBC news?
- zadadka, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3"No, no...not THAT pedal !"
- chrismwood, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3You're doing it wrong.
- Chairboy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3A brand new Lycoming O-320 (basically entry level, slightly smaller than the engine in a normal Cessna 172) costs about $30,000.
Schnikey! - HunterGathers, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3Proper landing in a taildragger
touchdown
NO BRAKES
throttle down to nill
pull-up slightly to burn off speed
air speed 80-70 pull up to "sink" the tail.
apply breaks - Co0kieMonster, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3Perhaps the breaks work a little too good.
- pshoaxbuster, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I've done that many times with my r/c plane when I was a beginner.
- AmazingSteve, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Yup. Landed hot and long and panicked as the runway got shorter and shorter.
- xyberjax, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2"Appeared to be making a normal approach"? He had already landed..!
- failtrain, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2How much would just buying a new engine cost?
- thinboyslim, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2You'd be surprised what makes the news nowadays
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/also_in_the_news/defaul ... - raptordrew, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2What a shame. My dad owns a 195, I learned on a 140. Funny enough, the son of the original owner of the 195 emailed my dad recently with pictures of the plane as it shipped from the factory when they flew it off the lot. 195 guys are a close-knit group.
- Forbiddendonut, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Annnnnndddd sticks the landing!!!
- ASSASSYN360, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Tail wheel landing gear configurations don't react well to heavy braking.
- Homerr, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Yo! vBrake just kicked in!
- emecks, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I actually just saw it and thought it looked pretty cool, couldn't believe it hadn't been submitted and thought I'd share it here :)
Then a couple of hours later the story about the German plane falling out of the sky broke, today the airliner in Iran. I sincerely hope that I don't see another one about plane crashes for a looooong time! - lohphat, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1RLOC FTW!
- sexybobo, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Since this is a Cessna they might have been trying to teach them handbrakes. Since a lot of flying schools use Cessna as training planes.
- CATSCEO2, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z58/TokioKoroom ...
- slashdotordigg, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2I was expecting Boeing 747 doing it. But still, it was rather cute though.
- dlite922, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1They've should have done the landing part LIVE!! ***** IT!! DO IT LIVE!
- dlite922, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1"[Damn!] Only one of the three passengers onboard was slightly injured."
- loathing, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1This happened in January ffs!
- rbarnes, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I couldn't have said it better myself.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1My Dad was an instructer for @50 years and once when teaching a new pilot in a Cesna 195 that had reciently been rebuilt with disc brakes up-grade did the same thing... the plane ended up standing on its nose, The cost of rebuiding the radial was huge.
http://www.airplanemart.com/Arlington-Northwest-EA ... - inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1They are truely wonderfull airplanes. Other than the student soiling himself, there was no real damage other than an overhaul, prop, a new polished spinner and a new inspection. There was no damage to the airframe...I must have been about 11 or 12 so its been almost 40 years ago.
- jnisme, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1TA-DA!!!
- dlite922, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1I see what y....oh ***** it your comment's not that funny.
