- czechman86, on 10/11/2007, -4/+46Ukraine is listed as non-religious, however, Ukraine is the center of Orthodox Christianity! Way to go map maker!
- buadach, on 10/11/2007, -6/+44The UK, Netherlands, Sweden & Norway are listed as protestant christian but all these countries have >50% atheists.
- Diablo84, on 10/11/2007, -0/+38So where are all the Jedi hanging out?

- iAlex, on 10/11/2007, -13/+36Way too little secularism, rationality and atheism!
- alacarde, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Look at Australia, tilt your head to the right. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the flying spaghetti monster.

- malekov, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Do you see the grey zone sorrounding all the countries? That is pastafarism influence zone
- GeneralKickass, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22I was an atheist too...until I discovered I was God.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Well the key clearly states: "Majority of population comprised of".
- NeilVickers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16So, I've always wanted to ask you. What's with the Platypus?
- donkz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Read the legend. Black is "no dominant religion/non-religious". Russia is still a very religious country. Most of the churches/temples were rebuilt since communists regime fell in the 90s. The reasons why it's black are:
1. It's full of different religions
2. The religion is not being passed to new generations as hardcore as it was before.
I live in USA now, and it seems to me that this country is full of religious fanatics with "god's will" embedded into nearly every legal document. I'd be really interested to see the count of churches vs gas stations. But overall, blacking out Russia is probably a result of uneducated guess based on poor survey targeting methods. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14@lady archer:
Those sites were hysterical. The first one claims that thousands of Muslims convert to Christianity in France. We click the link, and the only source is a certain pastor Schluster. The second link takes all those wonderful "conversion" stories from the site jesus.org.uk. Fine, I clicked the link, and found this piece of highly credible reporting: "A well-informed source, who will, for obvious reasons, remain unnamed, reports that an ex-Imam....". Lady Archer, I always knew that Christians lived in denial, but God, you guys are something. Those are your sources? And the best part is that the second one actually quotes from the "Islam Watch" site. Talk about desperate. How about sources with a little more credibility, like these:
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/980720/archive_004363.htm (Islam is growing fast in America)
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,6903,784241,00.html (Interest in Islam mounts after [9/11])

- smackywentz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14He's lying I'm God. And the Platypus... I got drunk with Zeus and Buddha and Buddha wanted a duck. So I said let their be duck, but I slurred and said let their be muck, and out came a mole-duck. We still laugh about it to this day.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I was religious until I found that I could make things happen and god couldn't.
- alamandrax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I'd reckon the map of India is pretty out of whack.
1. We were under Islamic rule for quite a while and not all muslims moved out of the sub-continent into Pakistan.
2. Hinduism isn't. There are various indigenous forms of faith and philosophy in India and it varies from state to state. And no, they aren't the same gods and godesses. That perception arose in the recent past.
3. Hinduism has a healthy dose of atheism and agnosticism within itself. It's more related to Philosphy rather than religion. The colonists decided it was a religion. - pokemogu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Most of those black colored non-religious countries are former or current Communist nations who treated (or still treating) religions as "the opium of the masses".
- Thefatheroftime, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10This should be a 3D map. Scientology is located mainly a mile in the air.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Scientology is a cult, not a religion.
- Tunguska, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Well, if Russia and China are religious...
Oceans FTW - floydman, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12Well i hate to say it, but its pretty inaccurate.
1) Egypt: at leasst 15% of the population is Christian, and i would guess a 1% jews
2) Saudi arabia has a lot of Shiites - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Try Wall Street, Hollywood and Silicon Valley ;)
- hmunkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6They are atheist but they do believe in Buddhist views. Ask a Japanese person what will happen after death and they will say reincarnation. I lived there for 7 years.
- dstz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7"Several studies have found Sweden to be one of the most secular countries in the world. According to Davie (1999), 85% of Swedes do not believe in God [11]. This, according to the survey, would make Swedes the third least religious people in the 25-member European Union, after Estonia and the Czech Republic. (...) In France, only about 12% of the population reportedly attends religious services more than once per month."

But, hey, whatever you want, Britannica. - lordmetroid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6England, If I remember correctly over 10% of the English population has registred as Jedi.
- erfmufn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Was this map drawn by protestants? LOL
I agree with previous posters about the accuracy of this map. There appear to be problems with Russia and India at least and I can vouch for problems with the Australian map also. Bury. Atheism and Agnosticism is very under-reported. (For detailed statistical analysis for Aussies see http://fatuous.org/2007/07/religion-wars-phantom-premise.php ) - zspitfire04, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7hidden under tom cruises secret base of doom in nevada
- mludd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I was actually going to make a comment about Sweden and Norway being "Protestants on paper", I have yet to meet a religious norwegian and here in Sweden most people are members of the swedish church because it used to be that you automatically became a member...
In reality most swedes don't care too much for organized religion, they think some of the traditions (mixed up with pagan traditions) are fun and all but mainly because it's an excuse to party or have a day or two off from work. - lordmetroid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Loads of innacuracy considering the widespread atheism in scandinavia. It is not protestant at all, maybe on paper but it has no anchorage in reality!
- nixr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8No Pastafarians. Buried as inaccurate.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6That's incorrect, look up your facts before posting.
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Or the character that made the statement in the movie was supposed to be a moron. Like most religious zealots who think nonbelievers are doomed to an eternity in hell and have to convert them (failing to recognize that nonbelievers don't likely believe in hell either).
- ICSU, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Maybe one day you will understand the difference between non-religious and in the name of a god. Do you really think that those non-religious people kill in the name of lack of belief?
If you refer to communists and maybe fascists and Nazis, they were killing in the name of ideologies very similar to organized religions. - humanerror, on 04/03/2008, -2/+6This chart is *****. Try finding any "shintoists" in Japan. Try asking your average Japanese person wtf a "Shintoist" is.
Japan is as athiest a country as you're going to find, but they have the whole damn country marked as "Shintoist and Buddhist". - cyberdork, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Yeah, you are right. Look at Germany, the south is actually completely catholic, the north protestant and the east nonreligious. But on the map it's just one color.
- pivovy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Do you have a mac?
- martalli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I feel like this map was made by a high school geography class. India is painted pink for Hindu, but it is in fact home to many indigenous religions besides Hinduism, such as Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs. Several area, including Goa, and less so Kerala and Tamil Nadu, have significant pockets of Roman Catholicism. In the north, there are significant numbers of Muslims. Even Hinduism hardly ranks as a monolithic religion like Roman Catholicism. The various differences between Hindu religions is less than the differences between the Abrahamic relgions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). Sri Lanka has a Buddhist south and a Hindu/Tamil North. They have been fighting a bloody civil war for thirty year. I find it surprising someone would embark on this map and yet not know about the Sri Lankan civil war and religious geography.
Plenty of others have noted countries such as Germany and Egypt which are also more complicated than this simple brush of the pen. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's a good movie but a poor interpretation of the book. The character who says that, Palmer Joss, has a religious revelation that turns him into a man of faith. There is much focus in the book contrasting those who find faith vs. those who lose it. Bear in mind the author, Carl Sagan, was a scientists and a militant atheist (plus a pot head) so his personal slant is of course reflected in the book.
- iigloo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Since when is China fascist?
The Chinese government does suppress religion, just like the Soviet Union did. And just like the Soviet Union, The People's Republic of China isn't fascist. China is a totalitarian socialist republic. That is probably not that great of a system either, but communism > fascism any day IMO. - ryanbrlw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It could be a lake. You know...The Great Salt Lake.
- enalios, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6it really is unfair to claim the entire 'rationality' trait for non-religous people
- peregrinum, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I would be suspicious of any information prepared by a religious group - the map's source says it's "World Christian Trends". You should question this data for yourselves by analyzing government census data. This map doesn't even say from which years the data was collected? Take Australia, for example. It is marked orange nearly entirely, but the major religion in Australia is Catholic - specifically: Catholic 26.4%, Anglican 20.5%, other Christian 20.5%, Buddhist 1.9%, Muslim 1.5%, other 1.2%, unspecified 12.7%, none 15.3% (2001 Census) - so clearly it should not be all orange. Also, nearly all of Australia's population is on the coast, and the majority of that is on the east and south east of the country.

I am of no religion, but I see a hugely biased agenda behind this sort of map. -
