good god... - noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15well, no, its suffering from a nasty case of what the medical community is now referring to as being "dead".
- Recoiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That last one, the headbutt, spawned bazillions of Gifs.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Such a pleasant collection, too! All good news!
Landmine victims, dead militants and zebras, forest fires, car bombs, bird flu, N.Korea nuke testing, Darfur, Beirut... - RooDoG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Poor Zebra :(
- aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9How did that Zebra die with its head up like that? Creepy...
- Zique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Man, all the photos are good, but the unexploded grenade one is simply amazing.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/06/in_pictures_photos_of_the_year_2006/html/11.stm - JohnP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What are you on about?
Read: "President George W Bush’s standing at home and abroad was diminished this year following poor results in the US mid-term elections." - jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's the best one!
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For a collection of "Images of the Year", I actually thought a number of them were surprisingly lame. Sure the events were significant, but I know I've seen better images than those for most of them. And Reese Witherspoon? Give me a break.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4but, these pictures are really biased toward showing the brutality of humanity. A lot of good things happened this year, and, all in all I think we've had much worse years in the past. But, the BBC wouldn't have you think that
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Peace doesn't make good photographs."
As philosophically correct that may sound, I don't really agree. :-)
Burst of Joy is a picture that won the Pulitzer Prize, symbolizing the end of the Vietnam War:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burst_of_Joy
And although the man didn't win peace through his actions, there's also the powerful "Tank Man" picture from Tiananmen Square, that I at least see as a solitary and desperate act for peace: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_Man
Also, celebrations during the fall of the Soviet Union in Moscow, 1991:

I hate that so many great Pulitzer Prize photos are only available in low res on the web though... Zealously protected by the copyright holders due to their value, I guess. I wish all of them were put in the public domain for their cultural value. :-(
I agree that the majority is about "doom and gloom" though, however, these are very important images so I'd think they're at least motivated. - Rekzai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh shut up
you can't be that stupid to not know what photos of the year 2006 means - Recoiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://gifdump.com/search/Zidane/
Proof's in the link. Owned. - knaps, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Know what it's missing?
Any form of progress from humanity towards itself. We're still the same intolerant, selfish, violent bastards that we were last year, and every year before that. So long as we choose to kill for our beliefs and refuse to help and respect others, we can look forward to dismal displays like this.
I hope that in my lifetime I see world peace and genuine human compassion, but I'm sure I won't. - Brocclibob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish Zidane would head butt hobophobe...
- Damienk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3hahaha dubya.
rawfl - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There was a night in KC MO that I had three rum and cokes and five car bombs. I redefined "blotto."
For those of you who don't know: an Irish Car Bomb is a drink. Take 3/4 pint of Guiness. Drop into it a shotglass with half Jameson Irish Whiskey and half Bailey's Irish Cream. Chug. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@peroqi21
"Take 3/4 pint of Guiness. Drop INTO it a shotglass ..."
I had it right, you're the tipsy one. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're "sure" that you won't see world peace and genuine human compassion in your lifetime, how can you hope for it in your lifetime?
You probably meant "I hope that world peace and genuine human compassion come about, but I'm sure I won't see it in my lifetime." - autodata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It looks to me like the zebra died after getting stuck in the fence.
- hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, maybe you would like it, but I wouldn't.
It was a joke anyway. Sorry you did not enjoy it. Obviously I understood the story and read it, just have a habit of deconstructing language. Next time I'll keep my big mouth shut. - Rincey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/06/in_pictures_photos_of_the_year_2006/html/9.stm

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Astonishing pictures, probably better than 2005 ones.
- perogi21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually most of the women in that car are well endowed. It's certainly an uplifting moment in my book!
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Geez, so much doom and gloom
Is the BBC convinced nothing good happen this year? - Spitfireleet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Bush and the Baby = Showing what the US is like at the moment.

That is one fine-ass resident of Beiruit in the shotgun seat. - perogi21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How do you drop a 3/4 pint of Guinness into a shotglass? Methinks you have had too many this evening...
- alphARomeo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@ahmedomran

The most horrifying of them all! - Horseboiler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yes I have just noticed that I didn't see the caption.
- hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Just how the hell do you take pictures of a year? Is it just pictures of the number 2006? (Too lazy to read the article, but intrigued by the concept of taking pictures of specific units of time)
- Horseboiler, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1What is up with that zebra, is it also suffering from famine in Africa?
Upon further note it was. - mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Oh yea! I remember that
Haha. I remember that time too. Haha, remember that?... - SourWorm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I've never seen one and think you are lying ... prove me wrong.
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Zebras doing car bombs?
