- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Perhaps the iPod was just sick of his music selection? Too much emo, maybe?
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Yes, spell it "fanbois." That'll get you dugg down less.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I was just listening to a news report on NPR (wish I could find it) about how we haven't improved on battery tech as much as just about everything else.
C'mon, inventors! What's wrong with you? Electronics should only explode in a humorous manner, preferably with confetti. - reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10man, they just don't make em like they used to.
- angusware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Burn Baby Burn (Disco Inferno)?
- redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9like a moth to a flame
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I almost would have listened to that rant, then you used the "fanboy" word and well, your argument fell flat on its face. Nothing's a bigger fad on Digg (the whole Internet?) than calling some random grouping of people (logically or illogically) "fanboys". Grow up, get a thesaurus and learn some vocabulary, and stop hating.
- angusware, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9an annoying gap
- pred8tr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So thats what happens when you turn it up to 11!
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Cool or hip? Are you mentally impaired? Do you think I (or a significant number of Digg users) give a flying ***** about being cool or hip? I have hours of podcasts, hours of music, hours of video on a device that has more processing power than what man took to the moon with him. Oh, and it's smaller than my cell phone with arguabaly the best one-hand UI ever developed my man. 100 million later, it's still going strong.
Please crawl back in your hole and flame other sites. - redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11thank you for telling me whats cool and hip i needed that
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Terribly sorry to upset you, but perhaps I wasn't specific enough, and I did find the show. It was "Talk of the Nation, Science Friday":
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9428253
And the point was made by a guest, lest you think NPR was totally responsible. Anyway, I believe the point was being made that battery technology hadn't kept up with the demands placed on it by the equipment or the way users treat it: frequent recharging before complete discharge of power, sporadic use, demands for longer life and faster recharge, etc. The battery notion was being highlighted for "green" cars, and the explosions of current rechargeable products was raised as a possible liability source for automakers.
Whew! That was a long way around Abby's barn, but I hope this assuages your "stupid NPR" assumptions.
And funny you should mention gas mileage, since we're basically using a technology to power our cars that was developed about 80 years ago, if not earlier, and hasn't even come close to being replaced yet. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dammit, right as the edit time ran out i noticed it said first gen NANO, go ahead and digg me down to oblivion, sorry its early i havent woke up all the way yet.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It could have been dozens of different things. However, since it looks like it was plugged in, my first guess is that the over-charging protection circuit failed. Since the nano can be charged from a simple USB connection the failed circuit will either be located on the battery itself or the main board (but not the part you plug into the wall). So, instead of stopping when the battery was fully charged, it just kept charging - easy way to start a fire. Again, just a guess, it's impossible to know without more information.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hell hath no furry like an iPod scorned. Don't ***** with the lithium.
- eeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This was my iPod, it was plugged into my PC and charging as per usual and it literally spontaneously combusted. It popped open and started smoking and sparking inside until I unplugged the cable from my PC. The scratches on the face of the iPod are from when it was in the same pocket as my keys, or in the coin pocket of my jeans with coins as well. I used to keep it in a case but that made it bulkier and I hardly used it, so I figured I may as well use it more and took it out of the case, even though it meant more scratches.
I took it into the local apple reseller who told me they'd escalate it with apple but I never heard back from them. So I called apple myself, and despite the iPod being well out of warranty they are sending a replacement, on the condition that I return the old one of course. I'm still waiting for the new one to arrive... - ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is the "Check Spelling" button still under warranty?
- ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Main screen wouldn't turn on. iPod had no chance to survive.
- thefurryone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, this is a perfectly normal and engineered response. After all, what do people do when they're dissatisfied with something far more important, like, say, politics or religion? They BLOW ***** UP! Why shouldn't we do it for inconsequential, stupid, petty things like what media player one prefers over another?
Personally, I'm going to strap ten of these to my chest and walk into Microsoft's front lobby now... It will be a noble sacrifice. PRAISE THE JOBS! FOR THE GLORY OF WOZ!
(I shouldn't have to add these, but... /sarcasm and /tinfoilhat ) - Raz4Life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migratory_birds
- chrislewis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hmm, any comments on what caused it to catch fire? Was it the charger?
- fivestarsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought it said that an exploding iPod caused a gruesome death.
- AragornII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder what was the trigger that caused it to explode?
My thoughts are, based off nothing more than the photos, it looks like it might have had some trauma before being plugged in to charge. The long scratches on the face of the player itself look like something that has been run over. If so, that might have been the cause (shorting out the battery), while the battery pack overheating and "explosion" would be the effect.
Ultimately in the end, dead iPod. - costyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jezus... someone really needs to learn about depth of field and using your aperture correctly. Nice pics, but the depth of field is so small details get lost very quickly
- ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, it would be interesting to see how many surviving and fully functional iPods are in customers' hands right now. Not sure how you would obtain such a statistic, but it would help shed some light on how many of the 100 million were replacements vs. how many were new sales.
- kirado4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow my spelling sucks
- RickyBennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1grate first laptop batteries explode now its the ipod batteries exploding what next watch batteries

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No more boom boom for that baby.
- Kash04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if u take it to teh apple store they will say its not covered under warantee
- kirado4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1apple fanboiz finally got tire of digging down the comments?? thier power is waning..
- julian02392, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2this was on the front page twice withing two weeks, the same pictures, story, and website :/
- jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha, do I detect a note of blind green envy?
All brand fanboys everywhere should slowly be put to their deaths. - patholio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1is there such a thing as too much apple snuff?
- grav3k33p3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple sold its 100 millionth ipod recently. Then, an ipod explodes. I believe this is some act of Apple-haters out there. Hmm, I don't know maybe this is just coincidental.
- DeepPan77, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Yeh, damn those 100 million selling fads!
- cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@raid517
"There is nothing wrong with my ability to fully utilise the English language my friend."
And there's nothing wrong with your ability to piss people off either!
BTW, you're either not American (no problem there) or you can't spell like an american:
utilise is properly spelled "utilize" in the good 'ol USA, but I suppose you're British.
I'm glad you like your $MUSICPLAYER, but why do you even care enough to criticize other people for their choices? Doesn't that make you a "fanboy" of some sort? At the very least you're aiding the very polarization you claim to abhor.
Don't bother replying. Blocking you now. *click* - samcrut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3That battery REALLY wanted out of there!
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If i were you i would write and complain about them giving you too many photos...
- bushface, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4i hate it when people put "esque" after something. its gayesque.
- craig870, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yep that ipod sure is burnt........I'm thinking that maybe 2-4 pics would have been sufficient though. FFS.......
- bigchina, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3man, they just don't make em like they used to.
-proud owner of a 1G ipod, still goin strong. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0so you melted it and put exploding in the title gee thats original
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11st gen ipod? I personally don't have one, but my mom does, its an older model, it has a monochrome screen and i dont beleive it has a back light. Last time I was over there it was a tad bit bigger than the extremely slim ipod they have pictured on the site.
http://www.engadget.com/gallery/exploding-ipod-dies-gruesome-death/211203/ for record of thinness - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You must be right since all of your comments have been so highly regarded as to be dugg up.
Let's go point for point with your 160GB *****, I mean Archos 504 vs. RockBox. Especially since I can buy two video iPods for the price of the 504. And considering battery life is virtually the same. How is your assortment of accessories, but have as many as the iPod. Hows the weight oops, almost twice as much.
...back to your flame hole boy. - Raz4Life, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2That again.
