    "Lesbian" has been used to refer to women who desire and love other women since the 1800's. We can't know what Sappho's actual orientation or sex life was like, because she died several thousand years ago, but fragments of her poetry have been noted for depictions of love between women, and as a result this influenced the development of modern English words to denote women who love women. It's not like some gay group recently took the name of a randomly selected place and started applying it to themselves.

What's even funnier: a lot of locals refer to the island as "Mytilene", which is the name of the large port town, and not "Lesvos".
