- Sithlrd, on 12/18/2007, -4/+39I miss the orgies...
- glasnostic, on 12/18/2007, -3/+30i for one reject this attack on my solstice celebration by the freakish Christians. and quit stealing our ideas
- dunnylovehun, on 12/18/2007, -2/+21FTA: "So, back then Christmas wasn't 'get a new Xbox day.' It was, 'you don't have to become a filthy whore day.'" I can't believe no sitcom used this for their "learning the true meaning of Christmas" episode. Like Dr. Huxtable threatens to sell Vanessa into prostitution all December only to tell her he was just fooling on Xmas morning.
- gn0stik, on 12/18/2007, -2/+20Bill O'Reilly is a douche.
fixed. - Eivo, on 12/18/2007, -2/+20I 100% agree, there is a war on Christmas. We need to stop these Christians before they try to take away all knowledge of how Christmas started and then make it a completely Christian holiday!
- inajeep, on 12/18/2007, -1/+15They have them on DVDs now.
- orxor, on 12/18/2007, -14/+27"Its a proven fact that Jesus was born sometime in the early fall."
It hasn't been *proven* that Jesus was born at all. - FickyFicky, on 12/18/2007, -2/+15Is it just me, or has cracked.com gotten a LOT better lately? Maybe I'm just maturing in reverse, but their recent stuff (at least their "articles" that show up on Digg) are freaking hysterical. I remember their magazine as being just a crappy version of Mad.
- davdev, on 12/18/2007, -2/+15"The earliest references to Jesus by a non-Christian writer that we have were made by the Jewish historian, Josephus. In his book, Antiquities of the Jews, which he finished in the year A.D. 93 or 94, Josephus refers to Jesus twice. "
References from someone who wrote at least 60 years after Jesus life are not proof of existence. I am sure Josephus was documenting an oral account of Jesus, but since there are no contemporary writings on the man, the case is not settled. When/if you find an official Roman document describing the execution, then you have proof, until then you do not.
As a side note, I do think there is a real person the Jesus story is based off of, but I do not know that 100% and I am pretty certain a good deal of those stories have been embellished over the years - Jlaugh, on 12/18/2007, -2/+15Actually there is only one reference from his time that remains Josephus refers to him once in passing. In the Bible he avoids the census so no Roman records record his birth. Nor was his name Jesus Christ.
- gn0stik, on 12/18/2007, -3/+15Christmas and every other Christian holiday didn't originally mean what they mean today. Although they were revered day, the form they took was just reverence, or prayer. Perhaps a gift or feast or two exchanged hands. What we have today, with most holidays are attempts at Evangelism by the catholic church to other traditions. This includes Halloween. Yes Halloween was at one point a holiday intended to remember the saints. Funny that a lot of Christians now have harvest parties instead of observing a holiday they helped transform into what it is today.
Is this something that a lot of people don't know? I thought it was pretty much common knowledge. - gn0stik, on 12/18/2007, -2/+12Seriously people. Empiric is right. If you wanna buy the Zeitgeist thing hook line and sinker, go ahead, but it's seriously flawed, and sometimes downright dishonest, and it's not just the Christianity part that's factually incorrect. The 9/11 truth apologist part is pretty bad as well. Although there's nothing glaringly wrong with the fed. reserve part, there's much better material out there on it. Read "The Monster from Jekyll Island" for a much more complete picture.
Remember when a "documentary" only shows one side of an argument, or fails to provide adequate source material, it's likely just propaganda.
Unfortunately, most are that way these days. You seldom see one that really aims to educate on a given topic these days. You should always check sources, and research stuff like this for yourself. Most of the time, you find that it's never really as black and white as they paint it. - jasenmg, on 12/18/2007, -7/+17On top of all these pagan rituals accociated with Christmas, Jesus wasn't even born in December. The account about his birth in the bible describes shepards in the field with their flocks of sheep. In that part of the world they have similar winters to the US. Its a proven fact that Jesus was born sometime in the early fall.
- anarchytv, on 12/18/2007, -9/+18One word... watch the movie "Zeitgeist"... its free to watch online... if you can sit through the sensationalist beginning (or skip past it if you don't have the patience), it dives into the origins of christianity and christian myths:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeitgeist_movie - Jlaugh, on 12/18/2007, -0/+9All Saints Day is the day after Halloween, Halloween is a Gaelic holiday called Samhain. It's a Gaelic celebration of the dead. All Saints day is pretty much the same thing from the Catholic tradition.
- ronaldinho, on 12/18/2007, -1/+10I hate Christmas the way it is now. Santa and that reindeer bastardized the day, and I wish they can just be banished. The first thing I will be teaching my kids is that Santa and Rudolph do not exist and teach them all the history of the holiday (and the origins of Santa and Rudolph too)
- GOVStooge, on 12/18/2007, -0/+8Bring orgies back to Christmas and let us sacrifice a lawyer or politician to the gods once a year!!!!
- diecastbeatdown, on 12/18/2007, -0/+8i'd rather spend less money and have more sex. i say stop all the commercialism and bring back those orgies.
- Intangible360, on 12/18/2007, -4/+11Why is this comment being dugg down? Anyone care to refute his statement?
- brufleth, on 12/18/2007, -3/+10You're being dug down because numerous actual historians have pointed out there is no such record. Later on some works by famous historians were changed to include him but they don't concur with other historians of the time.
- Jlaugh, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7http://www.omninerd.com/news/Merry_Religious_Assim ...
- davdev, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7So essentially Paul is saying that God changed his mind
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -4/+10Well, you see, Jesus was a living person and also a pretty good guy. You dont have to believe in his divinity but I highly recommend following his example.
- booyaman1, on 12/18/2007, -7/+13So the "war on christmas" really started out as the "war on paganism"? Does anybody know if the reincarnation of Aleister Crowley is here on digg? Maybe he can whip up some Merlin-magic FTW and bring the public nudity back to christmas!!
- pinchduck, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6As long as you aren't the one being sacrificed.
- VnutZ, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6OmniNerd carried a little history of Christmas about two years ago - paying tribute to Saturnalia, Mithras and the Druids. The whole ruse was orchestrated by the church to assimilate the pagans. Even better is that Jesus probably wasn't born on Christmas anyway. Merry Christmas indeed!
http://www.omninerd.com/news/Merry_Religious_Assim ... - AttilaD, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6"What did you get for Christmas?"
"Crabs...." - AM6278, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6Jesus would seem to have disagreed.
“For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV)
But how can that be since the true inspired word of God would not contradict itself? - arowan, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6Culture warriors, this is yet another intolerant salvo in the War on Saturnalia. Arm yourselves!
- gn0stik, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6No, I'm not surprised.... Dismayed or perhaps disappointed are more appropriate words.
Common sense is increasingly uncommon these days. - glasnostic, on 12/18/2007, -2/+7the romans are gone.. the Christians who remain all celebrate Christmas during MY solstice. and they put trees in their house (our idea)
ok ok.. i'm kidding...i don't give a ***** about the solstice. but i certainly find it funny when people freak about about calling it a "holiday tree" when the tree was originally supposed to suck down blood while in your livingroom, and be regarded as a living being with a soul and everything.. because its PEGAN - Jlaugh, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5I've been to a Pagan solstice celebration, it was a candle lighting celebration almost identical to what the way Baptist 's and Catholics do theirs.
- Jlaugh, on 12/18/2007, -2/+7I don't believe any educated Christian is shocked that pagan holidays are part of their religion. It's only been part of the cultural discussion since the fourth century. After all the church fathers are on record complaining about pagans worshiping a guy on the cross.
- UPGR4Y3DD, on 12/18/2007, -1/+6Do you actually feel that God approves of a holiday that has pagan origins? Take a look in the Old Testament and see what happened to the Israelites when they mixed pagan worship with their worship to God. Some of them still were "worshipping" God, but they were doing it with idols and other pagan techniques. Just take a look at what happened to Israel, and then you'll get an idea as to how God feels about these holidays today.
- Jlaugh, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5Yeah that's what Halloween is called in Middle English. Halloween is the American name, it's largely an American Holiday. No other countries besides Canada celebrated it until the 1980's, commercialism go figure.
- MacEnvy, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5The website is not directly affiliated with the magazine. I think that's probably for the best.
- Georgery, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5It's almost like it wasn't an objective, peer-reviewed article. In fact, I don't think it's a serious article at all. What is Cracked, a comedy site, DOING releasing such things?
- brufleth, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5There are at least two distinct "Gods" in the bible. The product of the numerous people which lead to its creation and the various way in which they personified their God or gods. There's a great book on it which I can't remember the exact name of or I'd provide the amazon link.
- NewGTGuy, on 12/18/2007, -4/+8"Love is the Law, Love Under Will."
"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law."
Many people in our government follow these principals. - davidwasman, on 12/18/2007, -3/+7Many of the facts here are wrong and highly subjective/suggestive. The author has an obvious religious bias. Even if they aren't religious themselves, it's plain to see they were influenced by x-tian mythology and assumptions.

- Jlaugh, on 12/18/2007, -0/+4I suggest Karen Armstrongs Book "the History of God".
http://www.amazon.com/History-God-000-Year-Judaism ... - davdev, on 12/18/2007, -1/+5Wow, I bet your kids will be a barrel of fun to hang out with. Santa and Rudolph and presents are the things I like most about Christmas. I am a card carrying atheist, but still celebrate Christmas solely as a secular holiday and appreciate general theme of Love and Good Will Towards Man
- clarient, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3I would much prefer having Thor's Oak in my living room.
- DrDabbles, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3I'm a little tired of the word "pagan" being thrown around to depict a gaggle of lawless orgy-loving freaks. Being a "pagan" simply means you don't follow monotheism. MOST "pagan" societies were very advanced, some of them were arguably the most advanced ever. Moreover, there were SEVERAL "pagan" societies that did not hold village-wide orgies or human sacrifice. So, be easy with the word pagan.
- gn0stik, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3All Hallows Eve.
- acitta, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3My favorite holiday tradition has always been the human sacrifice. When the priest lifts up the bloody, still beating heart, it makes one feel so close to God! ;-)
