we have no control? Right... because they're forcing us to buy their food and eat unneccessarily large portions... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+77Yeah, since there are outdoor escalators all over America..
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+77There was an episode of "The Biggest Loser" where the teams had to compete by seeing who could walk up an downward traveling escalator the longest.
Needless to say, I was entertained. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63Maybe the escalator is going the backwards and those people are using it as a workout. You fat Europeans probably use stationary stairs.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+53Point Loma 24 hour fitness

Seems the escalators are because people go through physical therapy there. As well as helping the older people who work there. There are other businesses there.
But admittedly, it does also help the really lazy people (those shown in the picture) who spend 5 minutes trying to park as close as possible, take the elevator whenever possible, use their car to walk the dog, and then pay a premium to go to the fitness center on his/her weekend.

- drunkentoad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Another reason
http://www.krispykreme.com/ - Daiken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38Actually I think the escalators are fine. A lot of people who go to the gym try to lose weight. They might be overweight or have other serious medical conditions that makes it hard for them to climb up and down stairs, but they need to work out so they CAN climb those stairs. As long as the destination is good, the escalators are fine. Now if there are escalators going up to a food court at a mall, then that's just bad.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Really? I thought they both were lame
In the first one, the guy clearly said he was on his way to the gym after giving his dog a walk, and in this one, there are people actually walking into the gym. Someone needs to post a "ACTUAL reason why America is fat" with an obese family coming out of some fast food restaurant - queefer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Where's the outdoor elevator?
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Not if they are designed to be outside. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escalator
- rpdillon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12This is about 1/2 mile from my condo...I assure you, it's real. =)
- woogley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11you should've seen the pictures your mom emailed ME..
- Thrashtastic27, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Holy crap, this picture again? This has been floating around through FWD e-mails and "funny photo" sites for a long, long time now. I usually don't make a big deal out of this kind of thing, but I'm sick and tired of seeing this picture.
- GuruMark, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I wish people would stop using "The title says it all" as a cop out for a real description. Tell me what the pic is, so I can decide if I want to actually bother...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18@nreynolds
Sarcasm.
Either that or your totally right. - SurrealDream, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Besides, what's to say those people aren't jogging up the down escalator?
- Kurisuku, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12For the nay sayers, this is real, and not photoshopped.
Outside esculators are very common in some parts of america, and also, these aren't there for people to be lazy. 24 hour fitness is typically a place older people, or people needing physical therapy, go for fitness. It's not the type of place body builders or dieters go. So it's somewhat understandable for this to be there. (I have seen the place in real life before, though. It does exist.) - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I bet there's a KFC nearby.
- mikebeauchamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9My friend snapped this one (here in Canada):

Poor Weight Watcher's people... - noctum17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Barely funny when I saw this picture 3 years ago.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There ARE escalators that function outdoors...
- DAaaMan64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I laughed at the first one and at this one, but I hope you guys aren't to serious about this. American's aren't fat because of what 1% of the population is doing. I personally have never seen someone walk a dog with their car before.
- fluxion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Daiken
good point, and now that you point it out i guess it makes sense why they're there. the young lads in the pic however, seem fully capable of navigating a short flight of stairs. - kome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7a real bobybuilder can walk with his arms!

Haha this is fun!!!! Oh wait I'm just acting like a low intelligence stereotyping self righteous bitch haha, just like most of you diggers yay! Ah durr, low intelligence is bliss dur.
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5here is an AERIAL IMAGE via Microsoft Live Maps:

bottom line: its real - AimlessAbyss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How ***** lazy can you be?
- Nothlit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I used to assume it was fake, too, but it turns out it's not. It's the 24 Hour Fitness at Point Loma in San Diego, CA. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=3675+midway+dr+92110&ie=UTF8&z=19&ll=32.751857,-117.21807&spn=0.001471,0.00339&t=k&om=1
And a picture of the same location from a different angle: http://home.sandiego.edu/~bschoch/pictures/gym.jpg - beavioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's in Point Loma, which is a neighborhood of San Diego. They get about 2.5" of rain a year. So, no it won't get ruined.
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5>>"any of you tried walking up or down stairs after doing heavy squats?"
Would they really need it going INTO the gym then? - wmtrader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4 Lets get real about the escalator at a shopping complex with a 24hr Fitness in it.
1. The escalator was not installed by 24hr Fitness it was installed by the developer who designed and built the shopping complex.
2. The developer had to deal with the terrain and deiced that he/she did not want any potential tenants turning down the space because the front door is higher than the parking lot.
3. Today there is a 24hr Fitness in that space, 10 years from now there will be a Barnes & Noble, and 20 years from now there will be a business in that space that no one has heard of yet. How do I know this, well my 24hr Fitness is in the spot where Pack N Save was and Pack N Save is in a spot where Consumer Club was and Consumer Club is long gone, i.e. GEMCO went under and Target is now in most of their former locations.
4. So with this in mind the developer wanted to make the space as appealing as possible to as many tenants as he/she can by adding an escalator and if a health club just happens to be the first tenant to occupied the space with the escalator in front of it than so be it. - calu99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They didn't say that.
- diblasio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4America is fat because of the increasingly popular placement of escalators in front of fitness clubs.
Thank god someone found the silver bullet! - kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3no it has a lot to do with how we replaced sugar with corn syrup.. MAny countries have banned the use of corn syrup just because of that.
skinny people are being diagnosed as obese - sirdaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Now if there are escalators going up to a food court at a mall, then that's just bad."
There's one here in Manchester, UK, that does exactly that :( - Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4having candy and soda in schools is not the reason; if they aren't in your school then you can easily walk to a convenience store that I'm sure is no further than a block away to get whatever you want. Also, kids don't make a meal out of candy, kids are fat because parents don't make them exercise and feed them fast food
- bovox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this isn't a fair depiction. most commercial franchises lease space in pre-designed buildings. it's more than likely that a real estate developer constructed the office space and then 24 hour fitness moved in. they have no say at all in whether or not there are escalators in their complex.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Same here buddy, same here.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think my mother emailed this to me 3 years back.
- wayback09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31997 called, they want their picture back.
- assum09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ummm you totally just contradicted the reason a hell of a lot of people post stories on Digg, which is knowing that your story was awesome enough to make it to the front page.
- undershirt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks like the gym is giving the people a test of will-power before they even go inside.
- razrielle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Man the reason that America is obese isnt because were lazy, its because they protect us too much. Hell im still a kid and i feel that were too protected due to the fact that you cant play red rover without being questioned by the police, hell when i was 10 i got arrested for play fighting a kid in recess. I think we need to go back to the old way of going outside, hell let us not wear helmets on bikes or play football inthe rain without bitching at us that were not gonna get hurt or abducted, same things were happening 10 years ago that they are today but now we have nagging yuppie parents that think family time is eating out at a mikki d's. Bring back the old times, tell your kids to get the ***** outta the house and play outside. I wasnt allowed to have a computer or tv in my room till i was 16 and i had to go out and get a job to pay for those, make your children do the same, or just allow a couple hours of computer time, please oh please, think of the children
- holyskeleton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ahh why do they bother standing up...
- adeadwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@razrielle
Not wearing a helmet while riding a bike is incredibly dangerous. Anyways, being forced to wear a helmet isn't much of a reason to stop riding a bike. - AZSanMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Only a fool or non-american believes that the U.S. is not currently in charge of the worlds direction.
- caaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is great! That is actually my local 24 hour fitness in Sunny San Diego California. I'm there a few times a week. To be honest most people do take the escalator and not the stairs.
