You don't need a mirror. Wikipedia isn't going to crash because of the Digg effect anytime soon. - bronstad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32dugg, not only for being an interesting picture, but also because the submitter did not use the word "amazing!!!" in the title or description
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I had no idea how similar the airport was to the one in San Andreas!
- im12env, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Looks like Atlantis!!!!
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Actually looks better scaled down than full-res.
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Here's the airport during daylight (link to microsoft live map)
http://tinyurl.com/3dqbn8 - MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I believe that's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Intn'l
also...your name is Tobey - PFS1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I don't know man, here's an overhead view of heathrow:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=heathrow+airport&sll=43.722979,-79.397507&sspn=0.178395,0.32135&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=51.470985,-0.450053&spn=0.00961,0.027122&t=k&om=1&iwloc=addr
Between the curves/contours and greater degree of symmetry, I think that this airport is far more visually appealing and suits the picture better than heathrow would. I'd never seen san francisco's airport before, but it's beautifully designed. - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@bsolidgold: If you think that it isn't that cool, then please, by all means, enlighten us with what YOU think is cool.
Obviously, enough people thought it was cool enough to get it to the frontpage. What is cool, and what isn't, is relative. - jgoodstein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The worst part about San Fran Airport is this runway:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=sfo&layer=&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=14&ll=37.610492,-122.358341&spn=0.03794,0.09553&t=h
When landing you don't see land to your right or left, and can be quite scary, especially for those who do not like to fly - leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If you truly cared, you would of at least linked directly to the images...
- maglob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6*insert generic comment about lack of digg picture section here*
- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Seriously, it's just off of 101, and there are about 20 signs, directing you where to go, and it even has its own lane on 101, the closer you get to the turnoff. Even a blindfolded rhesus monkey could figure out how to get there. But, I guess that that's above your level.
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4SFO is a nice airport. If you are going international, that is. The domestic terminal is...well, old and crappy.
- srosebush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's the first thing that came to my mind..... Watch too much Stargate I suppose.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thumbed up for great stargateness!
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Thats what I wanted to know, I was thinking Carbonite freezing chamber.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would like to see a shot of Hong Kong International Airport at night
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@teaboy
That's the first thing I thought of, too! Kinda sad actually... - julesverne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Markpdotcom
At least twice. Once on its own and once in a collection of photography, as far as I remember.
All the vast content of the net and all the stuff that never reaches front page, and we see the same things over and over again. This happens far too much. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Same thing during the day: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=sfo&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=37.614711,-122.39208&spn=0.011558,0.023303&t=k&om=1
- Aharoni, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Translation: "We surrender!"
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Confusing to drive to?! Its always been right on the 101!
- EridanMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SFO's terminal layout is among the best in the world... By bringing the passenger lanes into the middle of the airport like they do, no gate is more than a short walk from where you are dropped off, and the airport 'feels' a lot smaller than it actually is.
Its runway layout on the other hand is one of the worst for a major international airport. The parallel runways are usable in VFR conditions only because they're so close, and considering that SFO sits in a regular fog zone, this means that often the airport can only operate at 1/2 runway capacity. Rising Terrain to the Southwest also forbids any Takeoffs from 19s and Landings on the 1s, further restricting runway capacity, and finally, the 28R, the only 10Kft+ runway (long enough to handle a 747 at Gross takeoff weight) points directly at a 1300 foot hill, making for a very thin margin of error should a heavy loose an engine on takeoff).
Other than that, its a beautiful airport;)
(Bay Area GA pilot) - Nocturnalis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thats a nice looking airport.
- leland1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here's the terminal layout of San Francisco International Airport:
http://www.flysfo.com/guide_nonflash/gettingaround/meetingpassenger.htm
There's a totally automated AirTrain that gets you to-and-from your car to a boarding gate:
http://www.flysfo.com/images/about/Media_Information/airtrainMaps/key_map.jpg
And it wouldn't be complete without a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) subway station to take passengers to destinations all around the bay:

Do I sound like I work at the SFO Airport Visitor Information Booth, or what? : )
(no, I don't work there) - blkhwk86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ironically enough i flew from SFO to Heathrow about two months ago. The international terminal at SFO is amazing. And then there is heathrow....
...After I got past the immigration desk(which took forever) i felt like I was stuck in a basement. Like grungy basement, not a clean one and it was at 3pm on a crystal clear day in February. Just go into SFO's check in area and it's amazingly nice. But they need to do something to heathrow's terminal 1. In other words, wait until next march to fly on BA into Heathrow; that is when the new terminal will open. - ComputerNap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like a friggin Borg hive
- dugR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was there before. and i did not see any aliens. :(
- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uh, the snow picture was NOT of San Francisco Int'l Airport. So, I'd say your claim is fairly baseless. (Somebody help me remember which airport that was that got snowed in, and basically screwed up all flight traffic for a few days)
- merle2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It almost never snows in San Francisco, and I am sure it has never been snowed in. You are mistaken.
- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think you were in the wrong airport, my friend. As many others have stated before me, go look at the International terminal at SFO.
- srosebush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks similar to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ancient_City_Ship.jpg - rulesaremyenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That looks like Midgar from FFVII
- grgg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ah, the airport that i call home.
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or Tokyo or Seoul's.
- jgrgg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2looks sort of like the airport in gta vice city
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same here. Too bad the Oakland security line is a nightmare at times.
- Nerdculture, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HOW many times has this picture been up on digg during the last 2 months?!
- radioactivecow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you clearly havent driven to logan airport in boston
- Cornloaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@EridanMan
During heavy storms and certain wind conditions at SFO, they will use runway 1 for landings and runway 19 for takeoffs. I flew SFO to LAX on December 26 approximately 1900 and finally got to experience my first takeoff on runway 19. It seemed that the plane used a little more power on the takeoff, climbed a bit faster, and then banked south before cutting the engines a bit. My house is right over that flight plan so I hear and see these planes all the time. It's rare, but I have seen a 747 take off this direction and it sounds pretty scary as it is climbing right over my house.
I only see landings on runway 1 a couple times a year. The planes course puts them north down El Camino and then they turn right over the Mills Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame.
Here are two shots of planes landing on Runway 1 :

Takeoff from Runway 19L :
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0025700/M/ - jongos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but they saw you.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heathrow looks like the steampunk version.
- redfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was definitely weird when I was there... all you see is water, water, water... then you hit the ground. Bit jittery, but a nice view.
- Rooster99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why does someone always have to winge that they have seen it before! I havent seen this photo, and I enjoyed looking at it. If you don't like it, don't click on it. If you think you may have seen something the same or similar - good for you! Keep it to yourself next time!
And for the record, Ill probably enjoy the next one that pops up in a month or two.
I think the fact that its now on 900+ diggs means that Im not the only one who doesent care that something similar has been posted! - Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg for being my new background
- Marijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can proudly say this is the airport I use when I travel.
- mortey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dugg it.
I rarely use SFO however considering that most nearly everywhere I go is cheaper to fly out of Oakland. - Elektriq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sweet, I'm going there in June (I'm from Amsterdam).
