- Al3x, on 10/11/2007, -91/+21@ghee
I believe that is a correct example. I think the image cuts off where she made the mistake.
(sqrt(2) + sqrt(8))^2 = (sqrt(2))^2 + (sqrt(8))^2 + (2)(sqrt(2)sqrt(8)) = 2 + 8 + sqrt(2 * 2 * 8) = 10 + sqrt(64) = 10 + 8 = 18 - vamper, on 10/11/2007, -62/+23she was wrong cause she was told men do better. (source: another digg topic from a day or so)

I buried you. And if you ever put work into a comment again, you die. - donwilson2, on 10/11/2007, -61/+9(sqrt(2)+sqrt(8))^2 = 10, duh!
- Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -24/+739She's wrong for even trying to do math in the first place. You start letting woman do math and next thing you know they'll start wanting to vote, get jobs and wear pants instead of skirts/dresses.
- neoform, on 10/11/2007, -17/+376This being on the frontpage proves conclusively that there are no females on digg or reddit (this was on reddit's hot page earlier today), anyone who claims to be female is lying.

You're a woman, I guess? - kaelyiesta, on 10/11/2007, -28/+393buried as inaccurate. No man writes anything other than illegible block print so this cannot be a male chauvinist.
- goblindegook, on 10/11/2007, -28/+8@donwilson2: "(sqrt(2)+sqrt(8))^2 = 10, duh!"
You're joking, right? - gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -20/+61@ kaelyiesta,
That doesn't make a lot of sense (you must be a woman!), because block lettering is a kind of writing that is neater and more legible than most other forms, which is why it's standard for police officers to write in it (though I'd say doctors need it more than cops do). - Mimorox, on 10/11/2007, -31/+12Well, root(8) is just 2*root(2), so root(2)+2*root(2) = 3*root(2), square that and you have 9*2, thus 18. Thats the only reason that example works, theres tons of irrational numbers that won't square to a rational number. Pi is one example.
- foolfromhell, on 10/11/2007, -13/+143Of course the test taker is wrong...
There are no women nowadays...
Unless things have changed outside?

- luvkit, on 10/11/2007, -6/+119Well, a man couldn't be saying it. Tracey has to be a woman because she's saying something irrational.

No, of course those pants don't make you look fat. Hey, can you get me another beer? Colts are 3 and goal!

I was hoping someone would clear that up. I suspected the same thing. But can you please provide a formal proof that not all irrationals square to rationals?

- Ryosen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21"And anyhow, who ever heard of a square pie?"
Hostess? - cbuddha42, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4There is no reason for a formal proof that she is wrong. Simply do what the question asks and prove her wrong by using a counter example. She thinks if you square a real number you get a ratio, which would mean the result x = a/b. If we can write x as a/b, then it is rational. So, to find a square that is not a ratio, we need to find one that is irrational.
Simply take the 8 and bump it up to a 9, so you get (sqrt(2) + sqrt(9))^2
Thats just: (sqrt(2) + 3)^2
Now expand that: sqrt(2)*sqrt(2) + 3*sqrt(2) + 3*sqrt(2) + 3*3
Now simplify those terms: 2 + 6*sqrt(2) + 9
So, we get 11 + 6*sqrt(2).
We already know that sqrt(2) is irrational because the problem told us so. - slicedoranges, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11/b/ is on digg now? May god have mercy on us all.
- macmcrae, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1There is no way in hell that a man wrote that. Typical girl script.

(sqrt(2) + sqrt(8))^2 = (sqrt(2) + 2*sqrt(2))^2 = (3*sqrt(2))^2 = 3*3*sqrt(2)*sqrt(2) = 9*2 = 18 - celerate, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4The square root of a positive number could be two positives or two negatives, the answers could be 18, 10 or 2.
(sqrt(2) + sqrt(8))(sqrt(2) + sqrt(8))
2 + (sqrt(16)) + (sqrt(16)) + 8
2 + (+/- 4) + (+/-)4) + 8 so you get:
2 + 4 + 4 + 8 or 2 - 4 - 4 + 8 or 2 + 4 - 4 + 8
2 + 8 + 8 = 18 or 2 - 8 + 8 = 2 or 2 + 8 = 10 - stormgren, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11@celerate
Um, no. sqrt(x) (written with the radical sign in the problem) returns the principle root of x, meaning the positive root. It's a function, it can't return two values. - celerate, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3@stormgren
Not in any school I went to, that assumption dropped off when we started high school math. Even Wikipedia states that it's only assumed that only the positive roots are wanted. - spingk, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1you have: (sqr(2)+sqr(8))^2
write it as: (sqr(2)+sqr(8))*(sqr(2)+sqr(8))
foil and you get: (sqr(2)*sqr(2))+(sqr(2)*sqr(8))+(sqr(2)*sqr(8))+(sqr(8)*sqr(8))
You can multiple the numbers under the radicals to get just one square root. ex. (sqr(2)*sqr(2))=sqr(4)
follow this rule with the others and you get: sqr(4)+2sqr(16)+sqr(64), those are all perfect squares so you get 2+(2*4)+8=18. - spingk, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5Sorry for the double post, but:
@celerate
+/- is only when you take the square root of a variable, sqr(x^2)=+/-x
but sqr(9)=3
If you graph y=x^2 it is a parabola.Let's say you want to calculate the x values when y is 9. Put the 9 in for y and you have 9=x^2. Simple algebra says to take the square root to solve for x. The answer in this case is +/-3. The reason for this is very simple. If you have x*x that is the same as x^2. Well 3*3=9 but also -3*-3=9.
Also as stromgren the inverse of a parabola is a radical function. And a function cannot return two values. This is why when you graph y=sqr(x) it is only one half of a parabola. - Reedan, on 10/11/2007, -7/+242.

I guess all that crap they taught us about how we actually understand the laws of physical evolution... was just BS. - gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9"Why do men have nipples?"
If your serious about wanting to know the answer, its because in the early stages of fetal development both males and females grow using the same "template", if you will, and then the Y chromosome in males kicks in and begins specific male development while females continue along that template. But by the time the Y chromosome in men kicks in, we've already developed nipples. - Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Wrong way around, femlaes begin specific development and males continue on the template. Hence the missing information on the y chromosome.

I have a suggestion for the proof that girls = evil.
I believe that when you say:

that you can only say that
x = |y| (absolute value of y)
therefore,
if girls=(sqrt(evil))^2
then girls=|evil|
or girls are "absolute" evil!
-Jim"
even if we did establish that x = girls and y = evil this 'joke' still doesnt work. square root of -1 is i, i squared is -1 so this is saying that (sqrt(-1))^2 = |-1|, which says that 1=-1 which means that 2=0 which means that 1=0 and 1 is the same as 1/1 and if 1 = 0 you just divided by 0.

- kiduk, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4That was funny when I first saw it on reddit.
- jessebeans, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4lol... looks like i have a new (temp) desktop background
- thorb, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2FACT.
- justabum, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4besides the joke, this raises a couple important common themes in mathematics:
1) The onus of proof rests upon the person who suggests a theorem, not the person who denies it
2) It is generally easier to disprove a theorem than prove it. Disproving requires providing just one example. - MarrowMan, on 10/11/2007, -8/+0lol last time i saw a woman do math it cost me $490, 000.00 :s
- chrisbosh123, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2What were you on?
- jfb392, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Does anyone know that site of stupid tests answers?
- MarrowMan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Google much?
- KingLeonitis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0pie squared is not a rational number
- kd1s, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3That's almost what I'd answer given the same snarky question. I hate female bosses with a passion. I don't hate the person I hate the fact they feel they have to overcompensate. Those that do so seem to be some god awful bitches.
- Bureau9, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1the answer is 10
- JCritter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0No it not!

You have the coolest screenname ever.
I love that cartoon! - raithetarkon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Because Digg is latently sexist.

A.D.D. much?
- Andicow, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Great question.
- pquackey, on 10/11/2007, -14/+9First of all, it is completely inappropriate to assume that just because someone "is a woman," they can't do mathematics. Even if all of you who commented were "kidding" or "making a joke," I can GUARANTEE you that you are actually at least somewhat sexist.
To find out, take Harvard's "Implicit Association Test" (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/selectatest.html) and go to "Gender-Science" to take a short quiz to discover your implicit association of women with housework and men with mathematics.- jseres, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4Quit trying to push your agenda.
- zephyrTR, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1There's a biological REASON for stereotypical gender roles - and even if you want to deny that there is (which is fine) there's still hundreds of years of people living to those stereotypes, hence we're going to instinctively associate scientists with men and caregivers with women. There's nothing sexist about that.
The sexist part is when one assumes a man can't be sympathetic or a woman can't handle advanced mathematics. - sarae, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2What's the matter with being sexist. Arn't we all to some extent. I really don't see what the big deal is about admitting that men are better at some things, such as math science and being bosses and women are better at others, such as languages, art, and doing motherly, maternal and wifely things.
P.S.
I'm a woman and I found that very funny and laughed. Then again, I hate math. - zephyrTR, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1booya, Sarae.
Women are the priest to my warrior - and I know better than to piss off the person keeping me alive.
