- simplenation, on 10/11/2007, -1/+66Sitting in a 3.8-metre sea kayak and watching a four-metre great white approach you is a fairly tense experience. Although we had extensively tested the sharks' reactions to an empty kayak and had observed no signs of aggression, this gave us little comfort as we eyed a great white heading straight for us, albeit slowly. Just a metre or so from the craft it veered off, circled and slowly approached from behind. It did this several times, occasionally lifting its head out of the water to get a better look. Then it lost interest, and as it continued on its way we were able to follow a short distance behind. Once we'd come to terms with having nothing between ourselves and a four-metre shark except a thin layer of plastic, our kayak made an ideal research platform for observing great white behaviour in shallow water. Its advantages are twofold: it is inconspicuous and appears not to cause the sharks to alter their behaviour for long, and it allows us to watch them in a natural situation, as it is not necessary to attract them to us with food.

- TuxedoMax, on 10/11/2007, -2/+45Honestly. It could be a lot worse

I believe they used photoshop to add the text to the picture. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -15/+56Phart! Adrenalin is brown.

- slydogsz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+40It is a real pic, no photoshop. National Geographic did this story I believe, but this is a very old pic & story. Had this as my wallpaper 6 months ago.
- insecuregirl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Commentary: This amazing photograph shows a great white shark trailing a man in a sea kayak. The photograph's caption explains: Sitting in a 3.8 meter sea kayak and watching a four meter great white approach you is a fairly tense experience. Although some have doubted its authenticity, the photograph is genuine. It was taken from the September 2005 issue of Africa Geographic. The article details a study of Great White Sharks in South Africa by biologists Michael C. Scholl and Thomas P. Peschak. Kayaks were used to study the sharks because, unlike the motorized research vessel, they could manoeuvre more easily in shallow or treacherous water and had no engine noise to disturb the sharks' natural behaviours. The authors explain more about the incident shown in the photograph: Although we had extensively tested the sharks' reactions to an empty kayak and had observed no signs of aggression, this gave us little comfort as we eyed a great white heading straight for us, albeit slowly. The article provides a very interesting insight into Great White Sharks and includes a number of other excellent photographs.
- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -15/+45It seems the Digg filtering system broke and I had to manually fix the image.

Just because something has been through Photoshop doesn't mean it's bogus. I run practically all of my good photographs through it to do things like adjust levels, crop, and resize. - YourTechSupport, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17I thought he was gonna roll up and ask for some Grey Poupon
- toonworld, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13WTF!! I always assumed the pictures was fake, but now you're telling me it's true?? I think I would have lost it right then and there. If the shark didn't get me, the heart attack would've

- decepto, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14That's why I always bring my shotgun when kayaking.
- nicpedersen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9that kayak cant repel teeth of that magnitude!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10If by "Photoshopped" you mean "this file was opened in Photoshop", then you might be right. Otherwise, you have no idea what was done to the image.
- Arcan, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13Shark: "I can't believe I ate the whole thing."
- Arramol, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Unfortunately, one of their primary methods of determining if something is edible or not is to take a "test bite." Not pleasant for the test subject.

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3too bad you're going to be in Gitmo for 300 years.
- riaanc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5No, its not a photoshop. This was taken while marine biologists were studying sharks and published in Africa Geographic in 2005. It looks like its close to Clifton/Houtbaai. More info: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/shark-following-kayaker.shtml
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5They did it on purpose to study the sharks, it didn't just sneak up on the guy as he conveniently had a photographer following him.
Takes even more balls to do that - KlayBorg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Well you are an idiot. I am sick of people saying that something is photo-shopped, just because they have looked at photo-shopped pictures. Unless you are an expert, stfu.

Dugg up for proper use of It's/its - missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Bah, let Slippy die. I'll suffer through not being able to see boss HP.
- talan64, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2actually that is exactly the wrong thing to do. If the kayaker were to start splashing the shark would look at it more favorably as food. If it's splashing, it's alive. Read the commentary about from insecuregirl, it explains the picture and the researchers doing their work.
Just because someone leads a more interesting / exciting life, doesn't mean all their pictures are photoshopped. - paraboloid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Addblock Plus
