- FreakyD, on 10/10/2007, -29/+187Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign? - 10001110101, on 10/10/2007, -1/+146I like the addition of "because of people like you".
- zen6ox, on 10/10/2007, -5/+125Nobody needs a myspace.
- wittyname, on 10/10/2007, -1/+112This type of sign only adds to the beauty.
- RajAtWork, on 10/10/2007, -7/+83I like how Google served ad for Detroit Volvo dealers for this page ;-) Is it combination of "Detroit" and "looks bad" that triggered it?
- ijake, on 10/10/2007, -14/+87Yes, because badly written, profanity filled signs tacked on fences do so very much for a city's image.
- spidoman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+62Speciest.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+57Detroit is a real life myspace page.
- X18999, on 10/10/2007, -1/+41Ahh people started throwing trash in alleys and in front of vacant houses when they stopped picking up bulk trash.
- jonnyboy88, on 10/10/2007, -4/+44So I whistled for a cab and when it came near
the licensce plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
if anything I could say that this cab was rare
but I thought man forget it yo homes to Bel-Air! - infinityplus1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+38I use to live about 15 minutes from downtown Detroit and after living there for about 7 years we decided to move a bit further out, approx 60 minutes out. We lived in a very nice "blue collar" neighborhood, at least it was when we moved in. Fast forward 5 years and houses were starting to be abandoned, people who moved into the neighborhood didn't keep their yards up. A burglary here (3 houses down) a murder (one street over) there and it seemed there was a subtle shift from a "nice neighborhood" to a "not so nice neighborhood".
I tried to make a change... mowing the yard of the abandoned house across the street, keeping the trash picked up, helping the elderly lady two houses down to keep her yard up, getting involved with local government, being friendly to neighbors - both old and new. But it seemed that we were fighting a losing battle... not enough people cared to make a difference.
Was this someplace we still wanted to raise our children? Not so much anymore.
So we sold our house and moved to a place where it appears the neighborhood does care as there is a very active neighborhood association.
Just an anecdotal story, but over time little decisions and actions made by one person can bring about larger changes. Sometimes for the positive, sometimes for the negative. In this case the negative seems to be winning.
You want a "revolution"? Start small and start by changing your own attitude and actions.
Or as Ghandi said, "Be the change you seek."
The sign while crude is in effect asking people to take responsibility for their trash. Unfortunately more and more people do not take responsibility for their own trash (literally or figuratively)... either in Detroit or the rest of the country for that matter. - mrblonde314, on 10/10/2007, -2/+40Detroit reminds me of the internet. A bunch of lazy ***** who love to complain but never get off their asses. When you add in a mayor like Kwame Kilpatrick who only cleans up the tourist parts of the town for the super bowl / white people, you're left wondering why I even care about the one time capitol of this great state. Now they're just the murder capitol of the world (in gross AND per capita). You walk downtown (during the day of course) and you are amazed with the beauty and disgusted at the same time. You're on Woodward Ave. where everything is beautiful and literally one block over there's still tons of buildings just rotting from the 67 riots. That's forty years since that happened. They need to get it together. They need hope.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+37You mean, a private citizen doing something to try and help the city's image? I'm sure asking politely has done wonders for the trash in the alley.........
- huskerdude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35I think it's more a symptom than the cause, but I can see the guy's point.
- dyreschlock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31sepia + photo = art!
- rupprupp29, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29Hey at least everything is spelled right.
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24Why is there always a "No Dumping Allowed" sign right next to a huge pile of stuff people have dumped? Now that's ironic. Or moronic. One of those.
- cbartlett, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21In my neighborhood of Philly, people throw ***** on the ground all the time. Never ceases to amaze me how people can just toss stuff out of their car windows without thinking. But this is not something unique to Detroit.
- ripstuntz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20I like how they colored this picture to make it more dramatic..
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23MYSPACE is why Rome *really* fell.
- Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22True story: the other day, I overheard someone (while watching an ad for the next Survivor installment) say: I cannot WAIT for Survivor: Detroit Edition...nobody would survive that one..."
- vyko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Dug down for calling Ann Arbor "A2."
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Damn... and I thought I had no sense of humor...
Both are lyrics from the same damn song... - tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19The E's look similar because it's someones handwriting... Shocking, I know.
- cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Never been to Detroit, huh?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Haha, yea, because manipulating this in photoshop is so much easier that writing it on a peice of paper and taking a picture of it...
- KingAdrock, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17those are some nice E's
- CoSMoSYS, on 11/13/2007, -0/+16I went to Ohio, recently. Know what's a fun thing to do there? Pack up and get the ***** out, that's what.
- LostInTheWired, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16No, that would be 4chan.
- SilasTomorrow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Oh, you mean that Detroiters would rather elect someone black and with 'street cred', than anyone else more qualified? And that both the City Council & School District are corrupt and hostile to outsiders who could help fix it?
That 800 lb gorilla? Oh.... - capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15more of a quaint little charm.
- printenv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I find the mirror useful because flicker is blocked at work. This way I can see the picture.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14abstract concept-ist.
- vanbacon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Myspace is the bane of humanity
- Motodog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Beautiful photo, very artistic. The sepia, blur, lighting, and shading make for a great composition.
- wompwomp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Either that, or the fact that manufacturing jobs go poof when no one buys the goods you manufacture (ie. American cars). But that would be an honest answer instead of political gobbledygook and, well, who wants that?
- FelixdaaHack, on 10/10/2007, -14/+27This is an 800 pound gorilla issue that involves race, culture, and responsibility that goes along with any city with a large black populous.
- EnricoFermi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14You ***** need to stop making broad generalizations, I live in Detroit, I'm black and I'm not a slob. My two WHITE neighbors to the left and right of me however, are disgusting. It has nothing to do with race *****. Maybe if some of you weren't born with a silver spoon in your mouths you could understand the fact that it's very difficult for a person born into poverty in a city with a subpar educational system to advance in life. It really just amazes me that you people can be so ignorant sometimes
- Slade605, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I think it's fake, the grammar is correct.
- aixelsyD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Detroit should look a lot better now that the Lions are 2-0 (damn them though, messing up my football pool...)
- lex0nyc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I thought Detroit got bought out by OCP?
- cyberscape2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Chill, dude. O_o
- mrblonde314, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Haven't you ever seen monkeys in a cage? (I'm sorry)
- Turr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11under the sign should be trashcan
- gusevx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Actually, they are renovating most of the downtown area, not to mention Midtown, Woodbridge (Wayne state area) and building new living quarters, such as the Garden Lofts.
http://www.detroiturbanliving.com/ - gllopc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Responsibility is my anti-Detroit.
- Dhalgren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9More bottles and less Twinkie wrappers?
