- CrankMyBlueSax, on 03/19/2009, -7/+82I bite my nails because of the intense frustration over not being able to suck my own dick.
- coliseum, on 03/18/2009, -2/+61it makes nose picking less dangerous.
- Blinker1315, on 03/18/2009, -6/+59All a bunch of baloney. Nail-clipping is too anal; biting gets the job done quicker.
- bruuks, on 03/19/2009, -2/+51I think it's because they grow and get long.
That's why I bite my nails. If they didn't grow, I'd never have to bite them. - Dested, on 03/19/2009, -1/+26Ill digg you up, but im not happy about it.
- joe7845, on 03/19/2009, -2/+25What did people do before nail clippers?
- JobConcierge, on 08/10/2009, -2/+21Insecurity, nervousness, and critical thinking.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -3/+21No one cares either.
- agentinfinite, on 03/19/2009, -4/+18My uncle bites his toenails. It's disgusting
- mkmega, on 03/19/2009, -1/+14"Another theory says that that the desire to bite nails is an analogue of masturbation... Some believe that the nail-biting habit is a demonstration of self-tortures. If a person bites his or her nails, it may mean that they accuse themselves of something."
This has to be the dumbest thing I have read in a long time. - danwallace, on 03/19/2009, -2/+14I do it because they told me to stop masturbating at work.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -2/+13dude.. ill suck your dick..

* bites nails* - seanovan, on 03/19/2009, -0/+11What humans did before they had tools to cut them.
- KenSPT, on 03/19/2009, -1/+11Slow day for Digg?
- SpectralSounds, on 03/19/2009, -0/+10You bit(e) other peoples nails? I think it's a pretty serious problem for you too then.
- Aleman360, on 03/19/2009, -1/+11I bite them because I always lose my damn nail clippers.
- sadisticmind, on 03/19/2009, -0/+9+ Habit, something to do when bored
- HiImFromReddit, on 03/19/2009, -3/+12No one cares why people bite their nails either, coincidentally.
- ZimbuTheMonkey, on 03/19/2009, -3/+12I bite them to cut them. Not very mysterious in my case.
- johnhummel, on 03/19/2009, -6/+15That was my thought. I'm thinking of cavehumans sitting around.
Cavewoman Craw: Ug! You nails scratch back bad during hump-humps!
Caveman Ogg: Ogg no have tools to clip nails.
Craw: Use teeth - that what they there for!
Ogg: Is this like that parsley stuff you put on Ogg's plate and say no eat?
Craw: Parsley garnish.
So odds are, people bit their nails because their teeth were handy, and they didn't want to scratch their fellow humans. That, and the nails get in the way of typing on keyboards.
- noj505, on 03/19/2009, -2/+10to keep scientist baffled????
- trixdropd, on 03/19/2009, -3/+11I've bitten mine since i was little. I don't know why, and I doubt i'll ever stop. I don't do it cause they're too long, they never have made it to the long stage. If I can grip it with my teeth, it's coming off. Bury me if you like, but it's the truth.
- TecK415, on 03/19/2009, -3/+11I bite my nails cause i'm too lazy/don't like trimming them with clippers.
- 955701, on 03/19/2009, -2/+10Hypothesis: It's a grooming behavior. If you were nervous in the wild it probably had something to do with life-threatening danger. If your nails used to be claws, tending to them would be the right thing to do. The weapons might be long gone but it doesn't cost anything to have the lingering behavior.
- pacerx, on 03/19/2009, -3/+10Umm... To keep them short?
- ChronicJ, on 03/19/2009, -0/+7Couldn't have said it better myself. My exact reason for biting my nails every now and then.
- paulmetzger, on 03/19/2009, -4/+11analogue of masturbation? more like DIGITAL of masturbation! /pun
- yacinebouatrous, on 03/18/2009, -5/+10low level of self-masochism.... next!!

- specialK16, on 03/19/2009, -2/+7Hhaha. That's awesome.
- alexawesome, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5it's a quick and dirty way of removing a split nail. OCD dictates that all the others be the same length.

- bobbinika, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4wth are hammer fingers?
- JCEEZ, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4because they are too long andI don't have a nail clipper handy.
- abizzy, on 03/19/2009, -1/+5Our ancestors no doubt had to get used to either biting off their nails, or hope that some daily task would magically trim them. It's not like nature provides us with awesome nail clippers growing from some plant.
- EricAnderton, on 03/19/2009, -1/+5Makes sense to me. How else are you going to keep your hands useful unless you 1) have tools trim your nails or 2) dig in the dirt all the time (and wear them down)?
To look at it another way: how else did people in the stone age handle this? - andre321, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4Losing my nail clippers makes me nervous too.
- siandt, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4Did a five year old write that? Nail biting can be bad. Nail biting can cause infections. There are bacteria under people's nails.
- SuperV, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4You should wash your hands better after you wipe your ass.
- topgigmedia, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3provided that when you bite, you don't leave jagged edges. Trust me on this one - just getting over a bad cold and I "misplaced" all 5 pairs of clippers I own.

- atm259, on 03/19/2009, -2/+5In conclusion, there is no conclusion.
- wesniles, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3my cat bites his nails, it weirds me out
- CaptHuggyFace, on 03/19/2009, -3/+6BREAKING: Lost city of Atlantis still lost
- teamgwho, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3As a lifelong nail biter I can offer the following reasons... (not all of them are MY reasons)
obsessive compulsive tendencies/need for symmetry - you see your nail is rough or pointy so you chew at it to keep it even. but you overcompensate and now the other side is too far out, etc etc
boredom. seriously.
can't be bothered with/don't have access to/are afraid of - nailclippers or emery boards
tension/stress
that whole masturbation thing has got to be the dumbest idea I've ever heard of.
I eventually beat it by going and getting tips (so as to give my nails time to grow) then when i was sick of paying $20 every 2-3 weeks I was able to just get a regular manicure. And I mean regular. If I wait too long sometimes I'll bite them or, if I'm conscious enough, use a nail clipper but I always fark it up and make it worse. for me the skin along the cuticle is far more of an issue because when you chew/tear that you usually bleed. not to mention it is ragged, which leads to more biting.
Interstingly, women find it attractive when a man who gets a manicure. - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3no, knuckle cracking is performed to look BADASS
- matthewf01, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3My girlfriend bites her nails, and often does so until she's caused herself pain, or has started bleeding, which makes it frustrating for me to watch and know she's going to hurt herself while she has no idea she's doing it. Getting acrylic nails put on really did help, until one came off and she resumed her biting.
Also, biting your nails makes your fingers look kinda gross :( - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3WHAT WILL WE DO?!?!?!?
