- kellfinder, on 10/06/2008, -1/+40Hmmm, could be useful but seems like they should at least put it BEFORE the fence!
- theysayjump, on 10/07/2008, -1/+38If you look at it closely you can clearly see what used to be an "active" road behind the sign.
Or maybe it's where Batman exits his cave from. - openthink, on 10/06/2008, -3/+29Let's see, drive to a dead end, crash through a fence, collide into/through some big trees, drive through some swampy nothing land to get to...nowhere. If this town's got people who need this stop sign, there ought to be a documentary on the town. Like, town filled with near-blind people encouraged to drive...or town inexplicably overrun by car crashes into otherwise perfectly visible & safe wooded area.
- Yakoloi, on 10/07/2008, -0/+21Ever driven through a country road at NIGHT? You wouldn't be able to see that white fence until about 10m out (Unless it were painted with reflective paint) much less the end of the road or even the trees in the way whereas you can see the distinct reflective glare of the stop sign at 50m. It seems perfectly reasonable to put a sign there, the locals are probably sick of out of towners crashing into those trees at night.
- AmyVernon, on 10/06/2008, -2/+20If someone actually needs a stop sign here, his or her driver's license should be revoked.
- weiwuwei, on 10/06/2008, -1/+16After crashing through white fence one should STOP to avoid hitting trees?
- jeenyus2004, on 10/07/2008, -1/+11It's pretty obvious there was a road there before, they put up the fence to close the road, left the stop sign there. Instead of dimwitted rivers, title should've been "lazyass city workers". Or like one of the comments above said, it is easier to see a stop sign at night then a fence.
- openthink, on 10/06/2008, -0/+9If you've got drivers that bad or drunk, you need search lights, maybe a SWAT team. Stop sign? Any driver who's at risk for crashing through a dead end, white fence and bunch of trees isn't likely to be deterred (or to notice) a stop sign. Maybe add some Vegas-style flashing lights, you've got a chance.
- RichMig, on 10/06/2008, -1/+10A sign that says Birchwood would be educational.
- aerobroken, on 10/07/2008, -1/+10Stop before you hit the tree, the fence looks like it was put up later to help slow you up before you slam into the tree.
- aerobroken, on 10/07/2008, -1/+9I bet that not many people run this stop sign..
- abagchee, on 10/07/2008, -1/+8Is this in Wasilla?
- WordsnCollision, on 10/07/2008, -0/+7The town's not dumb, they can collect a fine from anyone who runs the sign - well, anyone who lives.
- ahhell, on 10/07/2008, -3/+9Front page? This? This is way beyond lame.
- jehan60188, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6the fence is the 'white line' you're supposed to stop behind...
- SillyRabbits, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6 To be fair, on a dark, rainy night I'm sure that stop sign is a lot easier to see than some trees and a fence. It's not like the trees are covered with reflective strips.
- AmyVernon, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Oooh! And some dancing girls!
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -2/+6Fence!!! Stop Sign!!! TREE~!11!!!!11
- manicleek, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Is it not facing a T junction.
telling people to stop before turning left or right?
seriously, think - dagr8tim, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4If you bothered to look at the picture, it appears that there used to be a lane to the houses/street in the distance. If that lane was a passable road for many years, local residents may be used to driving down it.
I've seen many neighborhood's with similar situations.
IMHO, the picture shows what probably used to be a very nice tree lined lane. Buried as lame/inaccurate.. - Grazfather, on 10/07/2008, -0/+3Looks how old the sign is compared to the fence. There is also what looks like a driveable path behind it. My bet is the fence was added years later.
- PacoDEmu, on 10/07/2008, -0/+3We have a winner.
- lornefs, on 10/07/2008, -0/+3Absolutely, when I looked at this I thought ya really funny, lazy road workers.
Lame, Lame, Lame.
Digg is getting boring. - greeniemeani, on 10/07/2008, -1/+4Buried since obviously there used to be a road and the sign was never removed. Seriously, images like this are stupid. Let's get back to digging Huffington Post Sarah Palin spam or something...
- openthink, on 10/07/2008, -2/+4You don't put up a stop sign to close a road, you put it up in busy intersections so cars will temporarily stop, then go. So, here, some fool approaches, sees the stop sign, looks both ways, sees no one coming, then crashes into the fence and trees he's supposedly not able to see? Conundrum. Mystery rapped in a riddle wrapped in...whatever. Still, ridiculous.
- FizzanoMatrix, on 10/07/2008, -0/+2It's the road to Pripyat.
- pitdog, on 10/07/2008, -0/+2It should be accompanied by several lengthy health and safety bulletins.
- tdclark23, on 10/07/2008, -0/+2I once took the percentage of folks who test below 85 on IQ tests, those that once were called Imbeciles, Morons and Idiots, and applied it to the number of licensed drivers in the US. I found that there are around 19 million of them licensed to drive.
If you are cut off and proclaim, "That person must be an idiot!" you are probably right. Dubya once warned that there are 4 million impaired drivers on the road, however, tomorrow they will be straight and sober. The idiots, morons and imbeciles will still be just that. - Johnagain, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1It's Hillary Clintons' road to the White House.
- guyver8400, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1They need these stop signs on train tracks, so people with GPS wont drive on them!
- Virgule, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1no offense, guys, but... buried as ***** lame.
BTW Algonquin for 'stop' is 'seten' :))))) - boydrew, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1i imagine teenagers liked to drive down that road late at nights. no cops or anything so they could go as fast as they want. i dunno
- CoolHandLuke80, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1But the sign has a white outline, that means its optional right?
- chanop, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1***** you, I got 4 points on my license for running that stop sign
- fanclerks, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1@AmyVernon
We're trying to avoid the crash, not cause one! - tekism, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1This reminds me of that episode of the simpsons where homer created all kinds of signs. Episode name: Homer's Odyssey
- sexybobo, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1They had this photo before. It was some where in Florida cant remember what the reason was but the road was not supposed to dead end. Had a big controversy.
- SnowBladerX, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1Looks like the road used to continue and the stop sign used to have a purpose prior to them blocking off the road.
- dirtridr, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1WOW, I've seen DEAD END signs but never STOP sign...
takes retardation to a whole new level. - elygirl, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1why get all logical about it. it's just funny.
- sq2shooter, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1Sadly, the reality is if they didn't have that stop sign and somebody plowed through the fence, lawyers would line up to sue the city for not having one.
- aleah, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1You should name the town!
- lornefs, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1A push of a button in the Batmobile and that gate folds down and .....
- drunkenkite, on 10/07/2008, -1/+2How stupid, you only need to yeild when merging onto a tree.
- lornefs, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1Are we going to post every little municipal faux pas on digg.
Let's stick to important subjects like that Palin bitch or weather or not Jobs is in good health. - dougmc, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1Might not be a dead end. We can't see what's to the left.
The road might very well do a 90 degree turn to the left, and they powers that be just want you to stop before you turn. Which would seem silly, but I've seen worse ...
Of course, that's not nearly as funny as saying that if this town really needs a stop sign here that it's got bigger problems ... - leerayIG88, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1I call fake because anyone could move a stop sign.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1It's for squirrel traffic control
- JKAL, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1I'm sure it's is a small town and they heard there are cars been made by Ford to limit the speed for teenagers by their parents, so they figured there are drivers out there who have really lousy parents who are not smart enough to teach these teenagers to be responsible and safe drivers.
They are just covering themselves for any future law-suits. - monsterette, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1...wha?
