- govsucks, on 07/21/2009, -2/+67Go Go Government innovation!
In other news city officials issued bow and arrows to over 1200 officers in the metro area. - BorsKaegel, on 07/21/2009, -0/+58I didn't realize they even manufactured new typewriters anymore.
- CaptObvious, on 07/22/2009, -0/+53Eh...no big deal. Computers will never catch on anyway.
- thinkb4utype, on 07/21/2009, -2/+44Typical government agency. Amazon can keep track of what millions of customers bought but a government agency can't replace 4-part forms with computerized databse forms.
The corporate people thought they needed 4-part carbon forms because of the signatures and routing until they realized that copiers made good scanners and you can email attachments. Then they put the forms on their intranets. The solution was proved 10 years ago, but the NYPD is buying typewriters. - Ouze, on 07/22/2009, -0/+41This article has several factual inaccuracies - for example, they indicate they are using 30 year old models like on "Barney Miller". In reality, the machines they are using are very similar to PC's (they have spell check, for example, on a display) and the form is "typed" much as you would print a modern document. They have har drives. They can do mail merges. There is far more accurate information in this article:

Disclosure: It's not my blog and I don't know that guy, but we both apparently have more regard for accurate reporting then does the NY post. Granted, they absolutely could and should be using something more modern, but I really hate when a reporter finds a great way to frame a story, and then hammers it into that frame, facts be damned... but these are the times we live in. - bigthree, on 07/21/2009, -0/+20You want them to just throw out all those blank carbon copy forms! That is just wasting money...and trees.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -3/+17That's probably true in America. You probably need to import them from Siam or Prussia, or something.
- anexanhume, on 07/21/2009, -0/+14Thank you for not threatening my conjured stereotype of cop life as delivered to me by Law & Order.
- thallium205, on 07/22/2009, -0/+12Typewriter can be spelled using only the top keys.
- calvincooper66, on 07/22/2009, -0/+12***** all y'all. I sell typewriters.
- dman24752, on 07/22/2009, -0/+11It's what I've always say. The problem often isn't between big government and small government. The problem is between smart government and dumb government.
- Wisgary, on 07/22/2009, -0/+10Well of course they need them, how else will you save your game in case of a zombie infestation?
- levitron, on 07/21/2009, -1/+11Purchased from "Swintec." The name is almost a joke...
- taylorwbuley, on 07/21/2009, -0/+9With typewriters, it's really IBM Selectric or bust.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Selectric_typewri ...
http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/vintage ... - mister23, on 07/22/2009, -0/+9more accurate reporting than the post?!
IMPOSSIBLE! - hawkspur, on 07/22/2009, -0/+8Prussia is in Germany. Not exactly the lowest standard of living.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 07/22/2009, -3/+11Hey! I have a good idea! Lets let them run our health care system! /s
- akchrs, on 07/22/2009, -0/+7IBM Selectric III's FTW!
- inactive, on 07/22/2009, -1/+8I don't know, I spent all this time and money getting an engineering degree while these ***** got to drive around eating donuts in brand new dodge chargers and tasing people while being ridiculously over paid. Makes you wonder who the really intelligent one is.
- Campog, on 07/22/2009, -0/+7SwindleTec
- CaptSnuffy, on 07/22/2009, -0/+6Wow the Post blatantly ignored the facts.
- slyzxx, on 07/22/2009, -0/+6gimme the money and i`ll hand write them all for you
- DarkStar3333, on 07/22/2009, -0/+6Reality, its probally cheaper to buy new typerwritters then train the computer illiterate. Hit a certain age and it seems like you can cruise to a sweet pension in the public sector.
- KibibyteBrain, on 07/22/2009, -0/+6Actually, that's a good idea. Hardened criminals might be willing to take on the police in a shootout, but no one wants to mess with a marksmen with frakking crossbow and flaming arrows. Also, while its a tough choice, I'd rather take a 9 mm round over an arrow any day.
- superdigg, on 07/22/2009, -0/+6yeahh probably not!
- inactive, on 07/22/2009, -0/+5which brings me back to the original question. Why not buy comuters?
And dont tell me that ***** is run on a atom processor either. - rotundo, on 07/22/2009, -1/+6There are legal forms that, for legal reasons, are required to be hardcopy. You can't photocopy them or digitize and reprint. You need to type on a particular part of a particular page. Computers are almost completely useless for such a task. Typewriters make it easy.
- rotundo, on 07/22/2009, -2/+7Not to you, but to someone who needs to fill out hardcopy paper forms (a legal requirement for many government processes) a typewriter is worth far more than a laptop (and printer). And those typewriters need to handle far more abuse over their 10-20 year lifespan than the average laptop which will be happily replaced in 2 years at best.
Don't confuse your needs for someone else's. And don't confuse home or small office equipment with industrial equipment. - whipnet, on 07/22/2009, -0/+4From their website:
"especially designed for use in Correctional Facilities have been playing a major role in Prisons throughout the US."
-Hey, if you can make it in the prison system, you can make it anywhere.
* - robbob, on 07/22/2009, -1/+5their IT department must be run by Ted Kaczynski
- calvincooper66, on 07/22/2009, -0/+4...and carbon.
- thelonelysavior, on 07/22/2009, -1/+5When was the last time someone used their typewriter to check for updates on facebook, digg, or twitter?
- BREZZZ, on 07/22/2009, -2/+6I have a theory that as soon as computers replace middle class office workers entirely they will be destroyed by the workers and we will all go back to typewriters and adding machines.
- rotundo, on 07/22/2009, -0/+4It's got nothing to do with computer illiteracy. It's simply much, much, much cheaper to buy new typewriters than replace the entire state's (and federal government's) paper trail workflow with an equally dependable and legally bulletproof paperless data system. They made the right call.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 07/22/2009, -1/+5You have never shot a pistol have you? Guns are even hard let alone a 4-6 inch barrel on a pistol.
- spriggig, on 07/22/2009, -1/+5Be careful what you ask for. Do you really want efficient cops? Besides, it's not like they'll give back the million bucks if they don't spend it on typewriters.
Oh, and uh, dugg for Abe Vigoda. - inactive, on 07/22/2009, -0/+4well give them four part forms to fill out. The plan will be executed to perfection.
- mousky, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3Last I checked, you can attach this device called a 'printer' to a computer. You put paper in it, select Print from your program and a paper form is printed. It's truly amazing stuff.
- rotundo, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3And this is an example of smart government.
What would you be saying if they had announced that instead of buying new typewriters the state was embarking on a 5 year $50 million project to eliminate all paperwork. What do you think the ROI on such an investment would be? What are the chances that the transition would go smoothly? Oh, here's something to read before you answer:
http://www.businessinsider.com/another-high-profil ...
This typewriter move _is_ smart government. We don't have much hope as a nation if we can't even recognize that. - rotundo, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3And I would bet that he knows better than you or I whether the computer or the ledger book is more efficient for his purposes. I have seen cases where a computer system replaced simpler paper processes and slowed everything down. It depends on how you're using the data, who you are exchanging it with, and what systems they use. It's not an automatic win (at least in the short to mid term) to replace every process with computers.
- Zarokima, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3Then all the workers get arrested and have to buy the businesses new computers.
- ImperialSoren, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3"We have to sneak around the rest of the precinct in search of a ribbon to steal," a cop said.
thus spurring another round of theft paperwork and securing the typewriter's existence through self perpetuating necessity. - schnikies79, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3No skill huh? I bet you couldn't hit a target from 10ft away.
- calvincooper66, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3...and i guess you're just indelligent.
- lordmike, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3That's 'cos taxpayers won't pay for it... and they demand everything be bought by the lowest bidder...
- jemka, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3...and copy.
- JesseJ, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3Here's the REAL DEAL:
http://www.strikethru.net/2009/07/swintec-typewrit ... - TarikofGotham, on 07/22/2009, -1/+4Can we just burn the money instead?
- alpha88, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3Fail troll.
- Ghostalker, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3Is this why all the taxes and fees in NYS went up recently?
