- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11I have always wondered why women seem to prefer formulas vice breast feeding, but Hey! What do I know?
OTOH, is anyone surprised that the Nanny State cont's to grow? Only Queen-for-Life Hillary Obama knows what's best for YOU! - randf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7who's going to pick up the title "Czar of the War on Bottles"?

- freebsdmike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I guess my wife and I are fortunate that I have a good job and she could stay at home with our baby. She breast feed until he started getting teeth and we do think it has help him. It's probably not the breast milk that's helped him start doing everything early, but the bond and all the time my wife gets to spend with him.
- DesScorp, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7You know, if I was a GOP candidate for office, I'd point to New York and say "this is what you get when you elect Democrats". These people are basically giftwrapping an issue for Republicans.
- Indyanna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Re: the topic of some mothers who can and can't breastfeed - I know this is going to sound simplistic, and I definitely don't want to be crude, but...
Being from a farm background, I can tell you that there are some cows which produce high quality and quantity of milk, and some that don't. So, why wouldn't the same be true for people as well? I truly believe there are some mothers who are gifted in this area, and others who just aren't. Not every cow is a Holstein, if you get what I'm saying. So, if the baby is obviously not being satisfied - give the little darlin' formula. You'll all be much much happier. - johndi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Bloomberg WAS a republican in name only. He was a democrat for 40 years and switched parties to ride Giuliani's coat tails. When it was no longer convenient he switched to independent. Did you think he made billions by not being an opportunist?
- proliance, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Breast feeding = nice, chubby babies. Plus they pick up immunities from the mother.
Why, I just might do a little breast feeding myself tonight. ; ^ ) - kevin_qnn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if the evil formula corporations wanna give me free *****, they're more than welcome to. just like you're more than welcome to say "no thank you" when they try to give it to you. no need to get the government involved in this.
- mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't see the correlation with bad parenting and bottle feeding. A lot of this is ignorance the the blanket superiority of breast milk. Mothers just don't know how much better it really is. Saying that many women can't is untrue. Instead of giving away formula at hospitals we should encourage mothers to seek support when times are tough. Breastfeeding is hard. It gets easier as everything does with practice. If a mother thinks that fee din formula makes her a bad parent then why does she do it? Women need education and support in order to choose best.
- Indyanna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2True. But just as there is a difference in quality and quantity among breeds, and even between individual cows :-) I have no doubt at all that the same holds true for humans as well. Just one example, I know two sisters. One has 5 children, the other 3. One sister had well-fed, content babies with full tummies and nursing was no problem, while the other struggled with all 3 of hers. It just makes sense that there would be differences between mothers. After all, we're not carbon copies. And overall, that's a good thing! :)
- Sumyunguy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6Ummm...RTFA! They aren't outlawing baby bottles. They are just removing the automatic bag of crap you get from the baby formula companies every new mother receives at the hospital the day after the baby is born. Everyone gets one whether your are breast feeding or bottle feeding. They shove it in your hands and it may influence some mothers not to breast feed. They are just kicking the Baby formula companies out of the hospital rooms.
- johndi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd settle for a war on sensationalism. The title is way out of proportion to the story.
- cspann, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is a very personal choice. I tried to breast feed my first child for 5 weeks and the colic was so bad she would scream all day long with stomach pains. I was down to eating bread and water trying to eliminate any food that I was consuming that could cause the problem. Finally my doctor said, breast is not always best. The day I switched her to formula she didn't have stomach pains anymore. Everyone needs the choice and this move today is the first step in trying to force people to breast feed. Spend 1 day with a baby with colic and you will change your mind about making people breast feed. It was expensive, but worth every penny to stop the stomach pain and crying.
- Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Interesting how you've been dugg down.
Then again, who are we to puncture the balloon of a sensational headline and teaser... If it advances the agenda of getting angry at liberals or the government, then of course it must be true :P - freebsdmike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'll take it.
- mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Formula was first made to provide nutrition for orphaned babies. It saves lives but doesn't provide the benefits that breastfeeding does for infants and children. I wish women overall could try and see this issue less personally. Try to see it less as an attack on their mothering and more as way to build a healthier society. All we are trying to do is get more women to breastfeed successfully for longer. Whats so wrong with that?
- mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hospitals are supposed to promote health. Sending new mothers home with infant formula regardless of their decision suggests that the hospital supports formula feeding or that it is just as good as breast milk. It is not. Science tells us this. As a health promoting institution hospitals need to make this clear. Ban the bags.
- cboeman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1police state bs
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's misleading. They're removing the one-time free samples that serve as nothing but advertising. They are not eliminating some program that feeds poor babies.
- vbsvaric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is BS. Trans Fat, Cigaretters, and baby bottles?? If NY wants to do this, then they should look at alcohol, potato chips, cake and I hear laser printers emit chemicals that are as bad for people as second-hand smoke. If a woman can choose whether or not she even wants to have a baby, she should be able to choose what she wants to feed it. Hospitals do not need to promote formula for the comapnies, but they shouldn't BAN it for God's sake. I imagine there are women who really appreciate having the free formula b/c it is expensive. It's just too far.
- randf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1now that is a war worth fighting. first target...all those idiots that create the "news tickers" that scroll across the bottom of the tv screen.
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nah, this is what happens in the uneducated, sensationalized backwaters of digg. If this gets made popular, expect to be dugg up by those who bother to read the article.
- margo20, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Formula feeding can be just as healthy and is the only option for some people who never produce milk or very little. I was determined to make it work and did everything, including lactation consults, warm compresses, everything for 2 1/2 months and my daughter was way undernourished and starving and the pediatrician made me supplement with formula and my daughter is healthy. I don't think you can be the judge of what is best for everyone's children. If formula wasn't safe, it would not be sold and wouldn't have been around since the late 1800s. It is best to try the breast and hopefully that will work, but you can't ban other sources of nutrition and chastize people for their choices. You should spend your energy on changing the food in the schools. That is a more worthwhile cause.
- mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2That's exactly what they are doing and what they should do.
- XxERMxX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I support breastfeeding because formula is VERY expensive and a lot of welfare mom's use it.
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0"Please read the article - they're removing the free advertising from the hospitals - not saying that formula is bad or banning formula in general or saying babies can't have it or anything like that." -mnfiddledragon
- THX1212, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1"Please read the article - they're removing the free advertising from the hospitals"
And free formula - vbsvaric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Exactly. Women should choose. Haven't women been fighting forever to choose and keep the freedom to choose and now, couched under the big bad advertising company, it's OK to limit a woman's choice??
- JohnnyShouts, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5Where did these fools come from? Aha! I should have known. San Francisco! They may need to be reminded that many women can not breast feed or the milk of the mother is not good. Uhmmm. Now here is a thought. What if the baby is adopted at birth.......does the adopting mother have to devise a way to generate milk? Oh my goodness, now what do we do? Of course that may require thinking on the part of the ones who run the city!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Ignorant fools. Look at the research and you will find out that there are no benefits to breastfeeding over 3 month of age. Breast feeding over 1 year is detrimental. There are hundreds of millions of people grown up being bottle fed being perfectly healthy and intelligent. Concentrate your effort on something useful. There are plenty of much more important causes.
- siszam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It's a great thing to breast feed but many women can't. From over engorged breasts that can't be pumped to bleeding cracked nipples. I've worked with Le Leche League and I've been a parent myself. It's very wrong to suggest that mothers who bottle feed aren't equally good parents. When I saw NYC start banning things I knew they would slide down that slippery, fascist slope. So the only one they hurt with this are babies. Their answer? Don't give a little free food to babies. What next? Will they give you a choice between placing a mark on your childs hand or forehead or euthanizing them? It never gets better once the start butting into your life. It only gets worse.
- mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Again you are suggesting that formula cures colic? I don't know your specific situation but breast milk is the gentlest food on the digestive tract overall and made for babies by their moms and changes as they grow. It is truly a remarkable food. This article isn't forcing anyone to breastfeed. That is nearly impossible. If a mom is going to formula feed, that one free can in the bag is not going to sway her. It is the moms who are trying to breast feed and are having difficulties that are at risk. Breastfeeding is new to both mom and baby and introducing formula sabotages these breastfeeding efforts. It is crucial to have the baby at breast to ensure adequate supply and demand, a bottle of formula interferes with time at breast and milk supply. Again this is not making anyone choose to breastfeed instead it is trying to support women who choose to breastfeed that they have made the best choice for their baby and they don't need formula.
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0That is contrary to current mainstream findings and recommendations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breastfeeding
"International guidelines recommend that all infants be breastfed exclusively for the first six months of life. While each country has its own policy regarding infant feeding, it is generally accepted that newborns should be exclusively breastfed for around 6 months, and that breastfeeding should continue with the addition of appropriate foods, for two years or more. The practice of exclusive breastfeeding has dramatically reduced infant mortality in developing countries due to a reduction in diarrhea and infectious diseases." - mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Only 1-4% of women can't breastfeed. Women need to be reminded that they can breastfeed! Lactation can be induced fro adoptive mothers. They will probably need to supplement with artificial baby milk but nevertheless it is a natural gift that the adoptive mother can give even though she didn't give birth to her child. The world health organization banned advertising of formulas altogether years ago. Its about time we start to put our babies health before the profits of huge corporations
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Uhhh, Jeff? Think it through again. These are NYC health officials working under the REPUBLICAN mayor elected in 2001 and 2005, Michael Bloomberg: "... [Bloomberg] ran on the Republican ballot and was elected mayor in 2001, and was reelected to a second term in 2005." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Bloomberg
There is no link whatsoever with Senator Clinton or the Democratic party. In fact, the linked story is all about how the city will no longer include free formula to mothers when leaving the hospital. That's it. They're actually eliminating a hand out. Not to mention VOLUMINOUS peer-reviewed research asserting the nutritional superiority of mother's milk over artificial formula.
Do you see Democrats lurking under your bed at night? Hiding in the closet? - physphd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0You are aware that the NYC mayor this is happening under was elected on the Republican ticket? Twice.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Bloomberg
I fail to understand how removing a free handout from hospitals is pro-Democrat. It would seem the exact opposite to those who dabble in politics, or have, say, a dictionary. - mnfiddledragon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Please read the article - they're removing the free advertising from the hospitals - not saying that formula is bad or banning formula in general or saying babies can't have it or anything like that.
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0That's great but has nothing to do with the story, which is about eliminating advertising in hospitals for what is known to be substandard feeding choice in the overwhelming majority of cases. Why should the city help Proctor and Gamble profit at the expense of infant health?
- mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I don't think liberal has anything to do with it. What does being barefoot in the kitchen have to do with providing the best nutrition for our infants? Once mothers who have formula fed their children stop feeling guilty about their choice we will be able to have scientific conversations about the issue, not personal commentary about how non-breastfeeding children survived formula.
- mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0When cows make milk they make it for their babies. When we talk about quality and quantity we are talking about human consumption. Cows make milk that is appropriate for calves not humans.
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0"Formula feeding can be just as healthy..." I'm sorry but the facts don't support this claim. It is almost never the case, nor has it been believed for quite some time. For an introduction, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breastfeeding#Benefits
- MadSquirrel, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Well, after surviving two tots, there are many reasons for bottle feeding.
1) I can't breastfeed, so a bottle is all I can use. So the liberal moron that wants women barefoot and in the kitchen needs to fess up to the real reason for this.
2) Most women work outside the home, and breastfeeding every hour is rather difficult.
3) Some children will not breastfeed or do so poorly. I guess these morons are suggesting these children should starve to death.
This does show that the level of stupidity is going up. - mom0f3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Where did you get your information? That's funny that you are calling someone ignorant. I'd like to see your sources.
- siszam, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2This isnt' a Liberal issue. Bush started the fascism and the entire government, both sides, are running with it.
