When did everyone become such pussies? Really. In the 80s (back when we actually were less than 30 minutes away from hot nuclear death on a hair trigger) all anyone would have said about this was either "cool" or "too damn loud". Now we've got people wetting themselves every time a military jet goes for a leisurely flyby. - mysportsrumors, on 07/14/2009, -10/+123wow, id probably go OH SHHHHHH initially but then think that was so cool!
- Lucas123, on 07/14/2009, -2/+114Great architectural feature.
- rhdesigns, on 07/14/2009, -1/+112Two of your snot-nosed jockeys flew by at over 300 knots. I want their butts!
Damn it, that's twice.
I want some butts! - pitchblack16, on 07/14/2009, -8/+93"Honey, where did you put the keys for my F-18 Navy Hornet?...Honey??"
- DrDragun, on 07/14/2009, -6/+90I don't like you Maverick... you're dangerous
- TheBifman, on 07/14/2009, -4/+81Palin ***** ruined that name :(

- alpha94, on 07/14/2009, -0/+43Haven't you heard? Everything has changed since 9/11!
Typical response. - Daxx22, on 07/14/2009, -2/+44“It felt like the sky was falling,” said tenant Carol Stover, who saw the jet. “I looked up and saw the jet and I was praying we weren’t under attack.”
- FOX News Consumer - joshf52, on 07/14/2009, -1/+43You can be my wingman anytime.
- DulcetTone, on 07/14/2009, -0/+39Our enemies are hardly cool enough to have fighter jets.
- dweeb73, on 07/14/2009, -3/+42<cue music> "Take my breath awaaaaaay..."</cue music>
- wolfmann, on 07/14/2009, -2/+40F/A 18 wingspan = 40 feet 5 inches
Apparent wingspan vs foreground building (10 ft/story ~= 32ft)
after doing some math, it appears the plane is ~1/4th the distance from the building that the observer is from the same building.
from the article (posted in comments)
According to the military, the jet was actually about 200 to 300 feet away from the shoreline. Authorities said no one on the ground or in a building was ever at any risk. - noahhoward, on 07/14/2009, -2/+38For ***** sake, first Air Force One, now this?
Can we please, PLEASE, America, learn to recognise our own ***** aircraft? - Wreckage, on 07/14/2009, -0/+35This was in Detroit and that is simply a picture of the new police car needed to maintain order these days.
- MNorton17, on 07/14/2009, -1/+36Thats right, Iceman...I am dangerous.
- memper, on 07/14/2009, -2/+36"...in a telephoto lens, as focal lengths become longer, less difference is observed between close and distant subjects, making it appear as if they are closer regardless of the distance between them(compressed perspective)."
http://www.tamron.com/lenses/fundamentals.asp - Greengoo, on 07/14/2009, -0/+34You took it, and broke a major rule of engagement. Then you broke another one with that circus stunt fly-by. Top Gun rules of engagement exist for your safety and for that of your team. They're not flexible, nor am I. Obey them or you're history. Is that clear?
- Agamemnon582bc, on 07/14/2009, -0/+32*****! You can be mine!
- getoffmybridge, on 07/14/2009, -0/+28Sir, I had him in my sights. He saw me move in for the kill. He then proceeded below the hard-deck. We weren't below for more than a few seconds. I had the shot. There was no danger, so I took it.
- jeexbit, on 07/14/2009, -2/+30*bite*
- jake1337, on 07/15/2009, -1/+29i came.
- sharkd, on 07/14/2009, -0/+27Gentlemen, you had a hell of a first day.
The hard-deck for this hop was 10,000 feet... You knew it. You broke it.
You followed Commander Heatherly below after he lost sight of you.
Why? - Cockjuice, on 07/15/2009, -0/+27i conquered.
- osoroco, on 07/14/2009, -0/+27swordfight!
- nbx909, on 07/14/2009, -3/+29Reminds me when I was working towards my private pilot's license and the F-22 was being flight tested in near the airport I was landing at. I had touched down and an f-22 just flys across the the runway about 200 or so feet above the ground. My actual radio transmission: "Blah traffic, Cessna 12345D is taxing to ra... AHHH OH *****. Er.... uh.... did you see that?" We tried contacting the pilot but he was probably already several states away...
- ygeoff419, on 07/14/2009, -0/+26That, among many other things.
- deddoc, on 07/14/2009, -1/+27I'm gonna bring him in closer...
You're gonna do WHAT?!? - vessenes, on 07/14/2009, -4/+29If you really think a military fighter plane scrambling over your head is sort of like a 747, you've clearly never been near a fighter jet.
The difference is much greater than a lamborghini vs a toyota corolla revving at a light. It's primal. The jets are loud, they are super fast. They make you realize they could turn your city block into rubble only a few seconds after you first became aware they were around. And that's IF they have been circling so you can hear the jets.
I know you're just some guy on the internet who doesn't know anything about military planes, but thinking about the difference just got me going enough to write this post. - getoffmybridge, on 07/14/2009, -0/+25Viper: Well that about covers the flyby..........
- scarlettletter, on 07/14/2009, -4/+27That is an amazing photo! Time to buzz the towers mother goose!
- jaymzaugust, on 07/14/2009, -0/+21Yes Sir!
- sharkd, on 07/14/2009, -0/+20Dismissed.
- ElGuano, on 07/14/2009, -1/+21"According to the military, the jet was actually about 200 to 300 feet away from the shoreline. Authorities said no one on the ground or in a building was ever at any risk.
Still, the perception of flying so close to a residential area grabbed national attention. Perez later commented “It’s one of those things that’s just timing and luck.”"
Maybe they should mention something about distance compression with telephoto lenses. - bradleyland, on 07/14/2009, -1/+20I like the part where you went OH SHHHHHH.
- ugacrew, on 07/14/2009, -7/+26THIS is the only reason I'd ever want to be in Detroit.
- sHockz, on 07/14/2009, -5/+23sorry about that, ill try to fly a little closer next time so you can see me smiling for the camera ;-)
- ZenFountain, on 07/14/2009, -0/+17I'm too close for missiles, switching to guns.
- TalenGTP, on 07/14/2009, -2/+19What's more amazing than the picture is the fact that every 3rd comment isn't "SHOPPED!" or "FAKE!"
- Greengoo, on 07/14/2009, -0/+16You've lost your qualifications as section leader three times. Put in hack twice by me, with a history of high-speed passes over five air control towers and one admiral's daughter.
- Chongo, on 07/15/2009, -1/+17For five weeks, you'll be flying against the best fighter pilots in the Navy. You guys were number two, Cougar was number one. Cougar lost it-turned in his wings. You guys are number one. But you remember one thing: if you screw up, just this much, you'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog ***** out of Hong Kong!
- deddoc, on 07/14/2009, -1/+17The kid's a loose cannon
