- sturdiusmaximus, on 11/12/2007, -5/+278My favorite is "Wife and children murdered by ninjas, need money for karate lessons."
- duhduhduh, on 11/13/2007, -25/+220The best panhandling line I ever heard was "Need money for cannabis and alchohol.". I had to give the dude a little something just for being so honest.

"Tell me to ***** off : $1" - stelth, on 11/12/2007, -3/+122It looks like Eli from Half-Life 2.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -3/+118Nicely done, if he had a PayPal donate button I'd throw a couple over. :P
- caluca, on 11/12/2007, -0/+103he does look sincere :P
- burstaneurysm, on 11/12/2007, -1/+76A group of us was walking around on Halloween, this homeless guy came up to us and said: "Like my costume? I'm a BUM!"
He got $25 out of us. - castevens, on 11/12/2007, -2/+76Living in a big city, I see the "need money for alcohol" one all too often. It lost its thunder for me. Now the Ninja one is very creative! I'd give that guy a dollar
- Mast3rDigg3r, on 11/12/2007, -0/+71I like how he puts arrows after each word, like the person reading it wouldn't know where to go next
- underdog5004, on 11/12/2007, -0/+70I gave a dollar to some guy whose sign read "Will take verbal abuse for money"
...I kept the verbal abuse though; there's enough of that going around already. - Aindrea, on 11/12/2007, -3/+65.98 cents. do we have coins made for that?
- thechosen, on 11/12/2007, -0/+53"Endorsed by Signature Bakeries."
- SKick, on 11/12/2007, -0/+51It seems less because it is less! Magic!
.98 < 1.00
:) - SwimTorrent, on 11/12/2007, -1/+51Wow! I walk by that guy, like, every day.
- Kerrigore, on 11/12/2007, -1/+47Well, what did he expect him to do with it... save it up and buy a wall unit and throw rug for his cardboard box?
- pilot3033, on 11/12/2007, -0/+46If I'm feeling sympathetic, I usually offer food or drink, instead of cash.
- sobo310, on 11/12/2007, -0/+46i think it was dave chappelle or chris rock that said tihs, "if you see a bum with a creative sign he hasn't been homeless for that long."
- inspecality, on 11/12/2007, -1/+45If I'm feeling sympathetic then I don't steal their money.
- actorboy, on 11/12/2007, -0/+43Somewhere in Hollywood, a pod of desperate studio execs are frantically trying to track this guy down.
- svdigga, on 11/12/2007, -2/+41it attracts people due to psychological reasons, its called odd-even pricing .. instead of saying 1 dollar, say .98 cents - makes it SEEM less :D
- passedoutghost, on 11/12/2007, -4/+41My friend once gave a bum 10 bucks cause he felt sorry for him. The next time he walked by the bum he had a pack of smokes and a bottle of beer. He told me he's never giving his money to bums again.
- lhbaker, on 11/12/2007, -3/+38If the sign works, word gets around. You can expect to start seeing it on all the old, familiar corners. I think the ***** eating grin should be required, though.
- lava, on 11/12/2007, -2/+37I saw a beggar in Georgetown in DC (a rich neighborhood, for those who don't know) with a bucket hanging by a string from a stick and a cardboard arrow pointing at the bucket, telling passerbys, "I need money! They already took my Mercedes!" I had to give that guy 10 bucks.
- castevens, on 11/12/2007, -1/+34I wonder if anyone has ever given him exactly 98 cents?
- CptCheerios, on 11/12/2007, -0/+33My favorite homeless person sign read "Its my birthday, All i want is an elephant" Instant classic.
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -0/+30my sign would read:
"I'm not really homeless, I just do it for the money" - Nin10dude, on 11/12/2007, -0/+30He's creative, yeah, but not as creative as one I saw in San Francisco once...
"Need money for protection against secret ninja clan war, swordproof shoes needed." - inactive, on 11/11/2007, -0/+29>>No, you wouldn't. Now digg me down for 1$
Fixed - TheBSG, on 11/12/2007, -0/+28"If a homeless person has a funny sign, he hasn't been homeless that long. A real homeless person is too hungry to be funny." - Chris Rock
- castevens, on 11/11/2007, -2/+28So if those pictures were taken a year apart from each other, his wife has been a hostage for a full year. Maybe he should check to see if she's still alive --- at least get some proof of life like from that movie....Proof of Life
- inspecality, on 11/11/2007, -1/+26Do diggers really give money to panhandlers?
- spudnic, on 11/12/2007, -0/+25Over here in the UK there is a magazine called the Big Issue, the way it works is homeless people can buy a pile of them for a discounted rate, then sell them on the street for £1.50 each, they get their first stack for free.
I always buy one when a new one is out, and I usually give them £2.
Can't think of a more worthy cause or a better system to help people out of an awful situation. - HappyScrappy, on 11/11/2007, -1/+26Went up to Berkeley to Zach's pizza. Went with some coworkers, we were just out of college, riding in a 10 year old VW Quantum.
Friend sees a bum leaning on a 5 year old Civic right outside Zach's. Says he's homeless and needs money. He gives him some money and by chance we are seated at the seats just behind the window. So we are eating pizza, and see the bum's pal (another bum) come by to see him. They talk for a few minutes, then both get into the Civic and drive off.
Yeah. Homeless he says. Except he's driving a better car than the person who gave him the money.
That was the end of me giving money to bums. - iSamurai, on 11/12/2007, -1/+25Nothing compared to "Donate money to LSD research fund"
- humpy, on 11/12/2007, -0/+22I gave a hobo in San Franancisco a buck for his sign that said, "starvin like marvin" Creative bums deserve a couple bucks thrown their way.
- Sabretou, on 11/11/2007, -0/+22Ah, so Alyx's mother was kidnapped and Eli never got enough money to get her back. That's an interesting addition to the Half-Life universe.
- dionhewson, on 11/13/2007, -10/+31I can't believe no one is helping this guy out -> http://www.flickr.com/photos/red_devil/462359299/
- SwimTorrent, on 11/12/2007, -0/+21In front of the Metreon in San Francisco.
- mrurc, on 11/12/2007, -0/+21I once was in a bad situation and just about had a breakdown in a train station one day. I needed a dollar to catch my train to get to work to get my paycheck so I could afford to get home; if I didn't get that dollar, I would be stuck in a strange city 40 miles from home with no way to get back. Eventually a homeless guy took pity and gave me a dollar and on my way back, I found him and gave him $5. For a while after that, I did give to panhandlers who sold the local homeless paper, because that guy did. Each time, I told them that I don't normally buy the paper but someone who was selling them really helped me out one day and I was buying them to show that being nice pays off.
However, I think that in general, it is best for panhandlers that I don't give them money. Many of them need psychiatric services and would use my dollar to self-medicate instead. That is not the best thing for them; I would rather give my dollar to a program that provides them with the services that are good for them. But I live in a city that has a program that will pay homeless people more if they stay in a shelter. That seems like a much more functional system than one in which I give money to people so they can self-medicate some more.
That said, there is a really nice homeless guy who lives in my neighborhood. He never asks for money-- he only asks how your day was. He is very polite and seems like a genuinely nice guy. He smiles at everyone and if you say that you are having a good day and ask him, he always says that it is good and God bless, even if you are walking away having given him nothing. Sometimes, I give money to him because he seems like a genuinely nice person. I also don't report him for living next to the interstate retaining wall across the street, where he has been for several days now. There are some other homeless people in our neighborhood who are very aggressive panhandlers and are pretty scary, so I hope that by refusing to give to them and giving to him instead, they learn to not be so scary. - UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/12/2007, -0/+21Why 98 cents?
- latrosicarius, on 11/11/2007, -0/+20The handlebar mustache helps too.
- andwest, on 11/12/2007, -1/+16At first I thought this had something to do with the phrase "Just my two cents" because that is the difference between 1 dollar and 98 cents.
- SKick, on 11/11/2007, -0/+14The Hobo Store.
- theShiba, on 11/12/2007, -2/+16I didn't even know they went outdoors.
- Herald42, on 11/11/2007, -0/+13One sign I thought was particularly creative was "ATM. Deposits only."
- Ngai, on 11/12/2007, -2/+15i would give him a dollar... as i'm too damn lazy to count out the change.. :)
- KMye, on 11/11/2007, -0/+13exactly...
