- DominoFrost, on 05/15/2008, -55/+206Churches and "copyright" don't go together, If you are embarrassed by what you believe in, and don't want people to know, then that is your problem. Mormonism is losing it's credibility like Co$ is. A cult is a cult is a cult. Especially when they don't want to tell you the truth of their beliefs...........

- neseus, on 05/15/2008, -14/+133I'm a little uncomfortable with lumping Mormons and Scientologists in the same category...
- thesquire, on 05/15/2008, -12/+119The best way to find out what Mormons believe is to read the Book of Mormon. That's why they're called "Mormons", get it? If you want a copy I know a couple of young men in suits who would love to give you one.
- rendersan, on 05/15/2008, -5/+97The Handbook doesn't have anything to do with what the Mormons believe. It's training and instructions for the lay ministry, since the LDS church has no professional clergy and they have to have some kind of substitute for formal training.
The book isn't exactly secret, in any case. Despite what WikiLeaks says about the book, just about anyone can get a hold of it if they ask nicely. And thanks to the marvels of the Internet, you too can look up such tantalizing secrets such as the circumstances under which a cheating spouse might or might not be disfellowshipped, and how to submit end-of-year financial statements. Enjoy your newfound secret arcane knowledge! - theskunkworks, on 05/15/2008, -1/+78Agreed. Scientology and LDS are two very different groups. Mormons dont even charge you to be a part of their religion. You can get free copies of the bible and book of mormon from them. I know some mormons, and while i think the things they believe in are kind of crazy they seem to be very nice and have good values. I just don't like it when they solicit their religion, but then again I hate it when any religion does that.
- Kohaxx, on 05/15/2008, -11/+84The Mormons haven't been trying to hide their beliefs, anyone who claims the mainstream Mormon religion is a cult or compares it to Scientology clearly has forgotten the definition of a cult and why people hate Scientologists so much in the first place. Scientology kills people, Scientology extorts people, Scientology is a pyramid scheme who brainwashes members into funding their plans. If you're going to define Mormonism as a cult you've just defined all religions as a cult.
- snareguy17, on 05/15/2008, -4/+64I'm pretty sure you could just go to mormon.org, request any information you want, and they'll give it to you without trying to "cover" anything up, as opposed to the "Church" of Scientology.
- blackanode, on 05/15/2008, -4/+60I use to be mormon and I hold nothing against them I don't agree with their beliefs. They should be no where near classified with Co$. They have many different programs to help people in need around the world. They also have one of the best welfare systems around, to help members and other people in need. They truly like to help people.
- theviceroy, on 05/15/2008, -6/+52Mormons have a lot of weird beliefs, but they don't make you pay thousands of dollars to hear about it. Not to mention the LDS church is over 100 years old and all their dirty laundry has been aired for a very long time...
- canasian, on 05/15/2008, -3/+47All the mormons that I know are really great people. And if you ask them they'll answer pretty much any question you have or refer you to someone who can. Good folk.

- NeverReturnKid, on 05/15/2008, -1/+37The Mormons clearly "get" the Internet in some sense (you can chat online with a missionary, for instance).

Maybe they can shed some light on this issue? - theviceroy, on 05/15/2008, -3/+35Same story for me, same opinion. If you are a Mormon and fall on hard times, guess what! Instead of ending up dead in a fake hotel, people give you free food and will even pay your rent for you and stuff. I grew up Mormon and eventually realized I didn't agree with their theology, but to label the LDS as some dangerous cult is seriously misguided.
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -0/+31All I can say is, holy *****, I had no idea there were so many Mormons on Digg.
- estvir, on 05/15/2008, -6/+34Exactly, the handbook covers things like tithing which you could find out about by asking any member of the LDS church, it also covers things like surrogate motherhood's which isn't such a particular common topic.
The difference between what CoS and the Mormon church are 'defending' are polar opposites yet the people on Digg, Reddit and elsewhere will simply [and ignorantly] go "LOL CULT HAH WE GOT DOUCMENT!ZZZ MOAR LOLCATS" without even thinking about it for a moment. - mark076h, on 05/15/2008, -5/+32DOUBLE FIST ***** SCIENTOLOGY

- shutaro, on 05/15/2008, -0/+25You guys should hook up with Dan Brown... Just look what he did for the Catholic Church. Now they have all kinds of cool arcane secrets.
- paradexes, on 05/15/2008, -3/+27This is more a copyright issue I think. It is not a weird or secret manua looking through it seems pretty innocous and reasonable (even if you disagree with the policies they are not extreme). It is an IP issue. If you work for a company, would you actively release their trade secrets? Granted this is a religious organization, but it still runs in many ways like a corporation. And for the bashers out there, read the stuff. You will find nothing there but policies on how to handle specific situations and such. You may not agree with it, but it is not over the top either.
Dont get your hopes up over finding some insane controversy like how to gut sheep and drink their intestinal fluids or some insane crap. That all said I do think that LDS lawyers got a bit overzealous over this in trying to suppress it. If you are religious at all you will probably find you agree with a fair amount of what is said in there in terms of practice. This is a manual for leaders to handle specific situations (who are not paid for their service), not a doctrinal book like the scriptures.
But this being Digg, the majority of comments will be based on the title and maybe only the wikileaks summary and not the content. - Tikisam, on 05/15/2008, -0/+25I cringed when I saw the link to the missionary chat. My previous roommate is the missionary on the other end of that link 3 nights a week. He tells me he's usually the only one working at night and manages about 10 chats at a time... I can only imagine what havoc the digg effect is wreaking on him :(
- Berkana, on 05/15/2008, -3/+27Scientologists and Mormons = Buddhism‽. . . What‽
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauwastika - merlinus, on 05/15/2008, -3/+28(a) It's not just that, it's also the ability to link to anything. Linking is not the actual content and has already been legally proven.
(b) Also, that's like saying, the Constitution is copyrighted. - jessestay, on 01/21/2009, -10/+34Here's my perspective, as a Mormon, author, and social media expert - feel free to submit it to Digg if you like, or even don't like it: http://staynalive.com/articles/2008/05/14/the-morm ...
- dustinthewind, on 05/15/2008, -2/+29What I don't get is how the Mormon documents is question can be "secret church documents" when they are available to purchase on line for free:
http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servle ...
Granted you need to create an account with ldscatalog.com but there doesn't seem to anywhere on the account sign-up page where you have to prove you are a member of that church (how would one go about proving that on line anyway). I read somewhere that if you don't actively defend your copyrights you could lose them. I know the Mormon church has a publication company (I suspect the Scientologists' do too) Couldn't this just be a case of defending owned copyright and not some attempt to suppress information? - inactive, on 05/15/2008, -2/+23how about just "web", not "web 2.0". stop saying this buzzword *****
- doshindude, on 05/15/2008, -4/+25Mormons shouldn't be dragged into this. I have a lot of friends who are mormon and they are normal good people. Scientology is a whole different category.
- MadOgre, on 05/15/2008, -1/+21It's one of the most comforting things any religion has to offer if your spouse dies. Think about that.
- bn2bwld3, on 05/15/2008, -9/+31ALL churches have their secrets. NOT ONE is exempt! (Scientology is NOT a "Religion." Mormons are some of the best people I know!)
- jessestay, on 01/21/2009, -43/+70I don't think it has anything to do with "not wanting to share their beliefs". Most Mormons will tell you what can be found in those documents. It has to do with the fact that it is copyrighted material and Wikileaks is breaching Copyright by posting it.

The wikileaks document deals with those realities. I fail to see how the LDS church should be embarrassed by its own policies, unless they are inherently embarrassing.
- gALEXy, on 05/15/2008, -1/+18Its called eternal marriage, is it such a bad concept? If you believe in afterlife (which you do if your going to a church) why not stay with the person you married in life? sounds reasonable to me
- MadOgre, on 05/15/2008, -3/+25I'm proud to be Mormon. I'm not the best example of who we are... but I'm proud to be one. I am one by choice. I've studied theology extensively. If I wasn't Mormon, I'd probably be Pagan... but I find a lot of peace in the LDS faith.
There are some things I don't get... like the coffee thing. I LOVE iced coffee and tea... I drink Dr. Pepper too. I don't drink alcohol because I always have a loaded gun with me or on me... and I wouldn't drink if I was unarmed... I don't like the stuff. But I understand why the church says no booze. People don't get lit up on a pot of java and come home and beat their kids. But coffee... I really don't get that. - Tikisam, on 05/15/2008, -0/+14yeah, we like to promote that one
- TheXeno, on 05/15/2008, -1/+15Mormons believe in eternal marriage? You mean they are the only ones who actually believe in "happily ever after?"
- DominoFrost, on 05/15/2008, -1/+16...or someone is going to be ticked when they find that everyone has been quoting the Bible.... ; )
- Tikisam, on 05/15/2008, -0/+12even though you're site whoring... it was relevant, and content rich... so I dugg ya up
- snareguy17, on 05/15/2008, -4/+16I'm predicting you're LDS based on how you worded that. Kudos to you for beating me to saying that.
- canlitlvr, on 05/15/2008, -1/+16I'm a little curious why people care so much about so-called "secret" documents for either religion/organization? Why do we spend so much time worrying about what other people are doing and believe? Isn't that supposed to be the beauty of this country? We have the right to believe whatever the hell we want. I feel like this is similar to a situation that arises quite often in my PRESCHOOL class - the kids are so worried about what everyone else is doing and fail to focus on their own behavior. As adults, you'd think maybe we've come a little farther than that...
It's not like the "documents" reveal some illegal activity or anything. Different that what you believe maybe, but why does that bother people so much? RELAX and get a life. - theviceroy, on 05/15/2008, -3/+15yep! and its a religious ceremony, that doesn't involve a $7000 galvanometer, or years of brainwashing... but yeah - a belief in the afterlife man, that is some ***** UP *****!
- Hangly, on 05/15/2008, -1/+13True. The LDS church and the CoS don't quite fall into the same category here. Mormons aren't exactly known for being litigious or confrontational.
Still, it's incredibly stupid for the Mormon church to be fighting this. There's no bizarre detail of their religion hasn't been published on the web a million times already. Making a fuss about wikileaks is only drawing attention to it. - MadOgre, on 05/15/2008, -1/+15If you feel like you want to give it. Tithing is in the bible... it's not exactly anything new... or mandatory.
- neo912, on 05/15/2008, -0/+11I have to say I really appreciate people coming to our aid on digg. Mormons are no where near CoS. I love the quote our late prophet Gordon B Hinkley gave when it came to what he would like to say to people not of our faith "I say to other people, you bring all the good that you have and let us see if we can add to that. That’s our whole purpose, our mission, the way we operate. We want to be cooperative with other people. We want to share with other people. " I can see no other statement that would sum up the way mormons are supposed to behave towards other people.
