- NullzipZero, on 10/31/2007, -15/+409How the ***** could the politicians of Michigan allow this to happen?
- jeffgsmith, on 10/10/2007, -9/+296This isn't true until midnight tomorrow night (Sunday). The government shutdown hasn't happened yet.
- jayhawk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+285Michigan law requires the budget to be balanced. Michigan cannot have a deficit like many other states. So, a democratic Gov., along with a democratic controlled House, and a republican controlled Senate have very different ways to bring Michigan into balance. Keep in mind that Michigan has about the 3rd worst economy in the U.S. so many tough choices are being made. They've been negotiating for quite a while. Many solutions have been proposed, but compromise is not happening yet because both sides hoped the fear of a shut down would force the hand of the other side. That's how this happens.
- reddikilowatt, on 10/10/2007, -7/+221What will happen to Detroit? I'd hate to see anything bad happen to that great metropolis.
Oh, wait! Robocop is on the beat... - RollFizzlebeef, on 10/10/2007, -10/+207This totally explains Appalachian State.
- Neuticals, on 10/10/2007, -5/+115No booze OR cigs?!!
Damn...if this goes on for too long, you're going to have a LOT of pissy people in Detroit, let alone the whole state. Time to make a day trip to Wisconsin or Canada.... - DonWigler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+105"Will my taxes such as Sales, Use, Withholding, Income Tax, or Single Business Tax be due during a shutdown? Yes. Treasury has mechanisms in place to process all tax payments and receipts."
At least they left the important stuff. - logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -3/+104Illinois came close to the same situation last month. It's all about uncompromising idiots. It's just a game of chicken. Who will hold out long enough for their cause.
- RollFizzlebeef, on 10/10/2007, -2/+100Thank you for a good post.
It's so rare to read anything on Digg that doesn't end "politicians/government/corporations/etc. suck". - 1337Einstein, on 10/12/2007, -7/+101lol? Was there a joke I missed or something?
- FadieZ, on 10/10/2007, -3/+92Holy crap @ the thought of Detroit with limited law enforcement.
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -7/+89...Pleases you?
Let's see what you've got to say when you're not getting detained and tased by the police.
"try tasin' me, bro" - unique172, on 10/10/2007, -1/+76You're in luck! Unless you leave the state, you won't need one!
- norcalty, on 10/10/2007, -2/+73Give me a break. She took on the state just when it was going to hell. Problem is... we have always relied on the auto industry. People knew 15 years ago when one of the big three pulled out of Flint that it was dangerous to rely on the big three for our primary source of employment and state income. Engler sat around and just enjoyed the good economy that he had nothing to do with rather than trying to bring in new business and new industry to balance it out.
As soon as Granholm got into office she tried to start bringing in bio-engineering. She got the Life Sciences Department at the University of Michigan funded and brought in a bunch of bio-tech jobs. Not enough, but she tried, more than Engler. Too little, too late on the part of Michigan to make it boom like we would need to actually support our state.
Oh and they were dumping that trash in Michigan before she got elected. Get your facts straight. - jetboyterp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+70Reminds me of when the Federal Government shut down as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_government_sh ...
It's gonna cost Michigan taxpayers for sure...and yeah, it's usually short-lived. - sambowatkins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+69I'm doing Grad work in Flint and I've lived in MI my whole life, if you're going to school in Flint you'll want a pistol permit either way.
- Almidayas, on 10/10/2007, -9/+74It should never happen at all.
- juttman, on 10/10/2007, -42/+106Governor Granholm (Canadian born) allows Ontario Canada to dump there garbage in Michigan for a fee. Maybe she should raise the price. I live in the Mitten and our economy has gone to ***** since her election. I really hope the shutdown happens, only for her embarrassment.
- askthellama, on 10/31/2007, -3/+65I live in Michigan, and this is probably for the best.
Anarchy in the mitten! - skinrock, on 10/10/2007, -24/+83From the FAQs:
12. Will firewood still be inspected at the Mackinac Bridge?
Yes, firewood will continued to be inspected at the Mackinac Bridge.
I am SO glad they will stop sending funds to the schools, but still pay some idiots to check firewood at the Mackinac Bridge. - afflusso, on 10/10/2007, -5/+60This happened to me in New Jersey a few months ago... I think it only lasted a few days.
- FeuerDrache, on 10/10/2007, -2/+53Gee, you're so intelligent! Name calling will save our nation!
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -13/+63Wait a second. If the police can't do anything, doesn't this open the entire state up to looting?
Quite a few people with their balls intact will know to hit Best Buy up for a brand new home theater system at the very least. - Snakedal337, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4674. Will my taxes such as Sales, Use, Withholding, Income Tax, or Single Business Tax be due during a shutdown?
Yes. Treasury has mechanisms in place to process all tax payments and receipts. Taxpayers should use the same mechanisms they normally use to remit taxes. Failure to file your returns and or pay your taxes on the date due will result in additional penalty and interest being added to your tax debt.
75. Will I receive my tax refund such as my income tax, homestead property tax credit or home heating credit during a shutdown?
No. Refunds for any of the taxes administered by the State of Michigan will not be issued during a government shutdown.
***** Dicks. Sure take all my money! - viserov, on 10/10/2007, -1/+42I would assume there are still city services.
- knute5, on 10/10/2007, -1/+42I'm assuming a great deal of Michigan's woes are fallout from the shrinking American automotive industry. What actions are being taken to diversify their business base?
- joegibes, on 10/10/2007, -3/+43I'm going to college in Flint, MI next july... I hope anarchy won't take over before then.
I'll just have to get a pistol permit and pack heat everywhere I go. - TainerSarkin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36Actually, while this does sound really stupid, there's some kind of Ashwood Borer insect, or something like that, which is destroying Michigan's forests like crazy. The reason for checking the firewood is to check for that insect, trying to stop it's spread.
It's probably more worthwhile doing that than trying to educate the 95% idiots that really need two and a half weeks of learning to keep on track, which is how long this usually lasts. - adlaidemocrat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34Actually, the Canadian trash dumping is allowed under NAFTA, where garbage is defineable as commerce. It has absolutely nothing to do with Granholm being Canadian-born, and is not a practice that began during her reign as Governor.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32The governor is trying to get high tech jobs and alternative energy jobs with little success. We have Google jobs now but they aren't really tech jobs. They are phone marketing jobs for Google ads. The auto companies are still our biggest industry and they just keep getting worse and worse. We are really hurting for jobs and money right now.
- Fixhotep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31Yes, the local police vehicles you see driving around are just a figment of your imagination.
- rockmyway, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31My company has clients in michigan dot... all of us have been asked to suspend our work till the issue is solved... and without compensation... i guess everyone's in a ***** mess...
- Rahodeb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31if everyone is still getting paid, what's the point of a shutdown?
- wattersm, on 10/10/2007, -4/+33This isn't true yet, they have all day today to pass a budget so it'll probably go through at the last minute. Unfortunately our dumbass governor doesn't seem to realize that higher taxes is the LAST thing we need, they should be cutting taxes and bringing some business back to the state.
- Cjddrum1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31I am from michigan and my family works for GM and I disagree with the fact that buying a toyota has anything to do with our economy going down the drain and the fact that everyone is loosing jobs. The problem is that Ford and GM make ***** as cars and the rest of the country is getting sick of it, so when Toyota (who by the way owns the most truly american made car today) releases a cheap, reliable car, of course consumers are going to purchase that over the ***** Ford focus which has brake problems after 2000 miles. I have so many personal horror stories of GM and Ford vehicles and one can only take so much before you just say ***** it and buy a Honda (like I did)..the only reason we in Michigan still purchase fords is because most of our family worked for Ford or GM and we get discounts...You step outside of michigan and its all imports. So dont blame imports and competition for our economy going to *****, but rather blame Ford & GM for thinking they will remain #1 and USA would stay loyal to them even though they decided to slack in the production and design of the vehicles
- emerrill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26So inaccurate, we still have 14 hours til a shutdown.
And besides, as many have pointed out, most will not notice it. I work for a state university and I am not effected. The main things that poeple will notice is that alchohol will start to run scarce after a few days (no shipments allowed, but stores can sell what they have in stock). No lotto, and no Secretary of State (similar to the DMV in many other states). There will still be state police on the roads, not to mention all the county and local cops. - MDKAOD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27This happened in Jersey last year.
- rumorsofdemise, on 10/10/2007, -10/+35it's gone to ***** since granholm was elected?
more like it's gone to ***** because of her predecessor. - BIGmog, on 11/02/2007, -3/+28Time to cash in all my recycled cans.
http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/Seinfeld_Can_Scam - cwhitaker, on 06/03/2008, -0/+24I live in Michigan... No Cigs or Liquor... but all the beer and "mary j" you want ;)
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25No daily operating expenses, gas, maintenence, electricity, water, supplies, etc.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -7/+31Yeah enjoy the negative side effects... such as possibility of the federal government stepping in.
- jetboyterp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25The police do not "shutdown". There's no anarchy gonna happen in Michigan. Heck, it's against the law for police to technically strike.
It's only non-essential services that will be cut temporarily. - swicepick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24If you lived here, you'd understand how they are trying to prevent our ecosystem from being devastated by invasive species through those inspections. I would actually prefer if they keep working to stop the landscape from getting raped by the Emerald Ashborer in the Upper Peninsula like it was in the Lower Peninsula.
- truck87bp, on 10/10/2007, -12/+35Calm down, It's just the Normal ploy by the Lame Governor and all her Buddies to make you think they are finally working for a living. The outcome will be the same as its always been. Higher taxes for the people that are still working.
Michigan's Governor must be the worst in the history of Michigan. Her Canadian Politics suck as bad as she does. Her new State Police Post is just the tip of something bigger. The State Police are being laid-off while she's wasting money on a new building that they don't need.
She now wants to wants to TAX things like Bowling, Golf, Hair Cuts etc. Michigan need less Government and less taxes to spur the economy and a new Governor. - desolatordan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24I lived in Flint until I started college in Ann Arbor. Have fun in the ***** hole. Like the guy above said, in Flint you'll already want a pistol permit because it's already anarchy.
- PRocker267, on 10/10/2007, -5/+28exactly, this is all that bitch's fault. She said she had a plan and that it would leave us speechless... I'm speechless alright. Time to move.
- Strykar, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25As much as the feds are ***** idiots, I would rather have them in Michigan rather than the incompetent ***** idiots there currently.
I didn't even know that such a thing as a "Government Shutdown" even existed until now.. - edemerton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22State boys are far and few between, but the county mounties are still on the ball.
- moocow1452, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24They all hate not having their own may more than having no way.
