If this woman only wrote the truth - or, more importantly, what she genuinely believed to be the truth - then she is safe from libel charges. This is the case in the UK too.

The only difference here is the gossip was picked up by a large number of anonymous people, rather than a smallish group of 10 or so people that you see every day.

If I recall correctly, this whole dealy-o went down early 2005. This chick blogged about banging some Washington politician folks, she got outed by another blog, and she got canned. She then got a huge advance for a book (I'm not bothered to go look if it ever was published) and posed for Playboy.
This guy wasn't pissed that he was blogged about in her sex stories. He was pissed because this whole blog got huge exposure, and he went through a ton of grief over all this. She made a boatload of money of this, and part of those stories involved him, without asking his consent to be part of the blog. I don't find it preposterous for him to get some compensation for the ***** he's been put through. He's a professor, and he shouldn't have to worry about his students busting his balls in class. Show me where in the Constitution that people have some right to a 'reasonable expectation' of privacy? They don't. Humans are social creatures that thrive on interaction with other humans. There is no reasonable expectation of privacy.
